Walking through the streets of central Oxford, the amazing architecture of the 800 year old university dominates.
The University is divided into 38 colleges and 6 permanent halls, and these vary greatly in architectural style. From the old medieval city walls which still run through New College, to the many buildings designed by Christopher Wren, and the 1960s architecture of Arne Jacobsen at St Katz. There is something for everyone and it is well worth finding out opening times before coming to Oxford, as the colleges are open to the public at various times. Walking through the many quads is a must, from the very grand at Christchurch to the croquet lawns of Trinity, and the intimate quads of Lincoln College to the lake at Worcester College.
My favorite non-college building is the Sheldonian Theatre in Broad Street designed by Christopher Wren is one of the first interactions with the University for new students, it is spectacular inside and the views from the cupola are definitely worth climbing the stairs. From there it is a short walk to the Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Observatory, both beautiful buildings.
