The Best Sushi Restaurants in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"The Joint Seafood founder Liwei Liao opened this casual handroll counter inside Citizen’s Public Market to serve a parade of dry-aged fish wrapped in rice and seaweed. On the menu are handrolls filled with cuts of tuna, kanpachi, steelhead trout, and blue crab salad served a la carte or as lunch-sized omakase meals. Liao also has a full version of Uoichiba at his Sherman Oaks seafood market for anyone who’s located in the San Fernando Valley." - Matthew Kang

The 12 Best Handroll Bars In LA, Ranked - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Uoichiba is run by the owner of Joint Seafood, a fish market in Sherman Oaks known for dry-aging seafood in big cold cases. The same dry-aged fish shows up in the handrolls here, and while it tastes like great thick-cut sashimi, the difference is subtle. The temaki sets stick to fish-focused fillings, but we prefer cheeky a la carte options like the toasted lox roll. Our main quibble is that the sushi rice could use more seasoning, but overall these are solid rolls priced a few bucks above KazuNori. Seating is mostly limited to stools at their locations in Sherman Oaks and Culver City’s Citizen Public Market, so your lower back says don’t plan on lingering." - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

Stopped by. The white fish of the day was Cobia. They described it to me perfectly. I appreciated their extensive knowledge of the dishes. I explained that I wanted white fish but it sounded too aggro for me. They offered to sear it, saying it would completely change the texture. It did! And it was so delicious. Looking forward to my next seared cobia hand roll.

Google
This is the best hand roll place in all socal ,period. Eric and his colleagues are so attentive ,kind and deliver perfectly rolled hand rolls. I recommend this place to everybody .

Google
So glad we decided to stop by! It was our first time here and everything was amazing. The food was great and fresh, and the service was even better. I got the small OG set with 4 hand rolls, and each one was delicious. Every roll's flavor seemed to build on the previous one. The staff was really attentive and made sure my sister and I had a great experience. Definitely recommend, and would be back, especially for those baller rolls!

Google
We really enjoyed this place. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of the fish and the handroll preparation. Our service was excellent, the portions were quite decent, and the prices for the handroll combos were very reasonable. Other prices were also quite fair. A bottle of Evian cost us $3.50. Ramune (imported Japanese soda) goes for $4.50. Sides like soup or edamame ran in the $5 - $6 range. One note of caution. It's a sort of an omakase place. The combos are fixed and you can't substitute your favorite types of fish for what they offer. The menu is fixed and it's a take it or leave it type of deal. Unless you're truly picky, I definitely recommend that you take it. They put the handrolls together nicely. The flavors are tasty and we enjoyed them all. Some were simple -- just fish and sushi rice. Others included little added ingredients that enhanced the flavors. A note on the negative reviews: I find most of the negative reviews of Uoichiba to be suspect. The large majority all direct readers to a particular competing restaurant with a frequency beyond coincidence. It causes me to wonder what their connection to this other place might be. Overall we've found more than a couple of very good places to eat at Citizen Public Market -- the very cool food court concept where Uoichiba is located. So far, Uoichiba is my favorite among the best of them. If you like sushi handrolls, you should check out Uoichiba.

Google
Loved the rolls. Incredibly fresh. Great option if you want to have simple, purist hand rolls or if you want to dabble with something more experimental. Bonus: I was able to grab a slice from another vendor and bring it over while I ate my sushi. You can’t do that at your other favorite hand roll spot 😉

Google
Best rolls for reasonable prices! The seafood is high quality but I’m giving this place 6 starts just for the service alone. Eric walked us through the menu and was really patient with us as we asked him a million questions about the rolls. Hands down the best finger food in Culver City.

Heewon Lee

Google
Terrible experience. One of the staff was only wearing one glove and used their bare hand to wipe surfaces—then touched the food right after. That’s disgusting and completely unhygienic. The seats were super uncomfortable, most of the drinks were out of stock, and the menu had barely any variety. We ordered edamame, which they forgot to bring out, and when they finally did, it was cold and clearly not fresh. To top it all off, they automatically added a 16% service charge and expected tips on top of that. For this level of service? No thanks. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else.

Google
Uoichiba for the win! I could eat these hand rolls daily and this spot is a no brainer for me when I'm at Citizen's Market. The counter is a fun place to hang or grab a meal to go. It holds up during travel and you'll want to come back for more. I'm always craving the fatty tuna. Staff is friendly and knows their fish.

Yelp
Uoichiba Handroll Bar is beyond fantastic. Located in such a gorgeous Food Hall in Downtown Culver City, Citizen Public Market. Their hand rolls are elevated and even when taken to-go the food is still spectacular. The concept from the Dry Aged Fish Guy known to be renowned for his Dry Aging technique at Joint Seafood is out of this world. Each bento box is made to-go with sushi-grade rice, chopped up pieces of various types of fish (changes daily), and nori to top each hand roll off. This concept is crate for build your own hand rolls at home, or to come in and have them do it for you. Honestly, the best hand rolls and sushi to ever eat and such a refined fish. Go support and try them out to see what the talk is all about!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great and food came out so fast! Pretty decent amount of food for the price (I got the small box which was $25). When you take it to go, you have to wrap your own handrolls but honestly it's pretty straightforward and they gave soooo much fish! Will definitely be back again. If I were by myself the mini box would be more than enough food!
google avatar

Yelp
Omg awful. Not even close to a contender for KazuNori. I spent $50 on small handroll set and sake. The prawn was super rubbery and I regret spending my money. Go somewhere else for sushi!

Yelp
Went here for a quick dinner on a Saturday night after long drive to LA. Looked for options in the citizen public market and agreed on getting some sushi. They offer handrolls and bring it one by one. I went for the medium size (5 rolls) and my wife ordered the small size. (3 rolls). They prepare the rolls one by one so you can eat at your own pace and they always taste very fresh. Would say the medium size is more than enough even if you're hungry. I liked all the options (tuna, fatty tuna, salmon, white fish and shrimp). My favorite was the fatty tuna though. Together with a Japanese beer it was a great meal. Staff were super friendly, they have a lot of bar seating and two tables. Definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Lian T.

Yelp
So yummy! I was craving sushi and this hit the spot. Got the extra medium with the slammin salmon and would definitely get it again! Super friendly server and the hand rolls came out nicely timed.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Having tried both the Take out as well as Sit down menu, my best advice is this: sit down and get hand rolls! The take out is essentially fish and rice and sushi, so you can wrap it yourself, but you miss out on all the interesting toppings they add when eating there in person! They put roe, shiso leaf, rice cracker, which elevates the handrolls beyond the norm. Definitely go during Sunday dinner when they have happy hour (HH) before they take it away! Half off the $33 Extra Medium menu...totally worth! If you have the Amex Platinum card, get the Inkind membership ($100 credit thru platinum) and collect your discounts here.

Yelp
Delicious handrolls in Citizens Public Market! This spot is located past Goodboybob Coffee and Bang Bang Noodles. You can sit at the counter or order your handrolls to go. I opted for the former, especially since the market can get crowded and noisy; there aren't always seats available in the common areas. The menu has different combos of handrolls -- Mini, Small, Medium, and Extra Medium. I got the Small, which had three rolls and they let me substitute shellfish with yellowtail (since I'm allergic), which was really nice! The handrolls come out one by one as they're made to order and they were very tasty (and much more filling than they look!). I was glad I got the Small by the end, because I was full. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Culver City area!

Yelp
First time trying this place, and we each ordered the Xtra Medium (6) hand roll set. This got us lean and fatty tuna, white fish, steelhead, prawn, and the special, which was blue crab. I asked for less rice and managed to finish all six generously portioned hand rolls without overeating! The fish was super flavorful and plump and had a great texture. I also ordered the fish stock miso soup, and it was so aromatic and delicious! Service was delightfully personable, considering this is a counter in a bustling food court. Our hand roll artist(?) took the time to chat about the ingredients and had great recommendations. I love eating at places where the staff take pride in their work and food, so that was the cherry on top for our dining experience here!

Yelp
I had a phenomenal lunch at Uoichiba last Friday. I went with my friend Ivy P. after she raved about the place, and I'm already eager to go again. Honestly, I'd be happy to eat here once a week for the rest of my life. My only complaint is that parking kind of sucked, but I did eventually find a spot in the public structure adjoining the Trader Joe's. If you're parking there, just know that the first floor is all 45-minute spots, and if you don't head up to the upper levels right away, you might get spat back out onto the street. Uoichiba is in the Citizen Public Market, a cool upscale food hall that is, of course, privately owned. It's a casual temaki and chirashi joint with counter seats and a couple of tables. We nabbed one of the tables and went for the "xtra medium" hand roll tasting--the largest of the four sets, with a total of six rolls for $32 before tax and tip. Service was friendly, and I enjoyed the very low-key tasting menu format. The rolls came out one at a time, which felt fun and ceremonious, but I had to cross the market to get my own tiny cup of water. The food was exceptional. We shared the butter furikake edamame, and that worked well as both an appetizer and a snack to munch on between rolls. The xtra medium temaki tasting came with lean tuna, fatty tuna, steelhead salmon, kampachi, prawn, and the "slammin' salmon" daily special. Every roll was fantastic. Uoichiba dry ages its fish, and the results are notably delicious. I particularly loved the lush, flavorful salmon and and the silky kampachi, enhanced with a hit of yuzu. The prawn was sweet, served with crunchy tobiko and really good alfalfa sprouts. The daily special (which only comes with the xtra medium set) was indeed slammin', a bold, delightful roll with grilled salmon, blue crab, pickled carrot, and eel sauce. This was a wonderful lunch with outstanding sushi at a reasonable price point. I can't wait to go back to Uoichiba and eat every roll on the menu all over again.

Yelp
like this place, we swing by and shared the 6 roll at the counter. friendly service. typical food-hall environment. if you're craving rolls and you're in the neigborhood, it's worth a stop.
google avatar

Kiki K.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with some friends and we had a great time! Staff was friendly and the fish was fresh. We all got the extra medium tasting (6 rolls) for $32. Each roll is made to order and they will bring them out one at aI liked how their rolls use cubed fish versus how kazunori used minced fish. Food was a little on the pricey side but overall delicious. They do have limited seating so this is place is better for small groups. We were seated at one of their two tables and there was another party at the other table at the same time. It felt very squishy, wished there was more room.

Yelp
I felt like going on a food adventure, and that adventure took me to Uoichiba Handroll Bar. Located inside the Citizen Public Market, it serves temaki (handroll) flights to try out. I decided to give it a try and sat down at the bar. Service was very nice and courteous-- nothing bad to say about it! I originally opted for a flight of three handrolls, which came with prawn, lean tuna, and steelhead salmon; I also ended up adding a fatty tuna à la carte. To be honest, there was simply not enough fish or prawn in any of the handrolls: I was literally digging for them as I ate. The rice was also not seasoned, which made for a dry and bland taste. The only handroll I remotely enjoyed was the fatty tuna. What a disappointment. And for the hefty price for three pieces of mediocre handrolls, it's just not worth it. The only thing that redeems Uoichiba is the kind service. Save yourself the hassle and find another temaki bar elsewhere.

Yelp
Small bento box $33 (including tax and tip). It was delicious and so much fun to eat - like a leveled-up lunchable for adults!

Yelp
Best handroll place ever, incredible fish quality and amazing staff never have had a bad experience, far exceeds any other of the handroll places in the location. GO NOW

Yelp
What a delicious restaurant, the food was amazing and I am hesitant with certain foods. Luckily Erik helped us on deciding which items to pick and choose from with great detail and awesome service! Thanks to him we will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the following hand rolls: Kampachi (Amberjack) w Yuzu- pretty good. Loved the Yuzu- on it. Steelhead salmon- not as fatty as salmon sashimi from other places. Lean tuna- one of our favorites. Fatty tuna- however, instead of telling us that they didn't have it they served us a spicy tuna roll. Thankfully they let us have a different one after we inquired about the mistake. It's a bit pricey, but similar to other restaurants offering hand rolls and chirashi bowls except this one is in a food hall w less tables.
google avatar

Nicki V.

Yelp
Went here for the half off extra medium hand roll ($32 originally) on Sunday from 6-9pm. When we started to pay there was a 16% service fee that look very suspicious, and if you know how to math 16% of $16 is not $5.12. I brought it up to the server since the math was not mathing, and he said 16% of $16 is $5.12 and I was in awe. I just wanted an explanation. But ya the story is don't go, not worth. The hand rolls was ok, my favorite was the fatty tuna and that's it. I would probably never come back.
google avatar

Maria Q.

Yelp
Seating is very limited, but they were nice enough to let us sit at one of their tables even if I was the only one ordering from their menu from our party of three. Street parking is also tough so definitely opt for the parking structure. I got the small hand roll set and the fish bone miso soup. The tuna, fatty tuna, salmon, and prawn hand roll were all fresh and the flavor was well-balanced with the rice and nori that I didn't need to dip in soy sauce. The bone miso was good and it was definitely a more pronounced fish flavor in a good way and the miso wasn't too overpowering. They comped my miso soup because they forgot about it, but I would come back and get the bigger sampling size because I liked it so much.
google avatar

Cherie H.

Yelp
The fish seemed fresh enough and the service was good and the location enjoyable (and not too busy on an early Friday evening). We had the 5 handroll set and everything was so very bland. I didn't know handrolls could be so bland but they were. Pity - I was hoping for another good sushi place nearby.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
So good. Such a fun experience to sit at the bar and eat handwork's ready made. The slammin salmon, lox salmon, spicy tuna, and chu toro rolls were so good! They have sake and beer selections that were also awesome.
google avatar

Gregg L.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed in the food quality here as I was very excited to try this place. Went with the 4 hand roll menu item which ran about $25. Wish I had eaten literally anywhere else in the market. Lean tuna came out first and was made up of odd-sized pieces of rock hard tuna. This was supermarket quality fish, horrible mouth feel and no flavor. Fatty tuna came out next which was slightly better in terms of mouth feel but had a strange aftertaste. Off putting for sure and got me worried for the rest of the meal. The salmon hand roll was decent at best, but still not great. At least the fish tasted normal. The final item to come out was the "prawns" which were overcooked shrimp with a crisp bite. The flavor wasn't terrible, but there was no finesse here. Cherry on top was seeing one of the cooks open up what looked like a standard sized bag of shrimp you'd get frozen at the grocery store. I'm pretty sure this entire place is actually Ralph's deli-grade sushi served in a fancily decorated pop up bar area. This was nowhere near the quality of something like Kazu Nori and felt way overpriced for what we ended up with. There's no love in the food here. Avoid this one.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Kind service and a hitter of a kampachi hand roll. I just want them to do a bit better on some things. Pros: I think they use pacific seafood as their supplier - a quality fish supplier. they've been extremely kind every time I'm here. Welcoming despite the sort of pretentious "too cool for you " signage. That kampachi with the yuzu edge is a slapper. The special has been amazing each time. Cons: the lean, fatty tuna, and salmon rolls - they're lacking in a way I can't quite put my finger on. Fish feels a bit skimped on. No hot tea. I would love to just have a hot tea, not just a $4.50 ito en vending machine oolong tea.
google avatar

Joseph D.

Yelp
It's an OK spot if you're trying to get a quick fix for hand rolls... I'm a big hand roll fan so go to Kazu Nori pretty regularly. In comparison, this spot is pricier and I don't think the quality of fish is as good at Kazu. I found this place on TikTok, and they recommended the dry aged fish menu, but the chef wasn't in house so we weren't able to try it. They don't have Sake at this spot, but you can get sake from the oyster spot right across from the restaurant. Seating is barstool seating, and there's not a huge place, but we didn't wait on a weekday around dinner. Probably won't come back, but the wait staff was nice. I'd only come back if the dry age was available, but hard to tell when the chef will be there.

Yelp
Delicious handrolls with high quality fish and ingredients, super friendly and accommodating folks, and a fun lively vibe since it's pretty much in the heart of the Public Citizen Market. This place was started by the 'Dry Aged Fish Guy' who pretty much supplies lots of LA restaurants with quality fish. I heard it was opening soon, but didn't realize where until I saw the place while eating at a different place within the market a few weeks ago. My parents were in town I thought this place would be perfect since I wanted to try it and I wanted them to eat a little bit healthy. We got here and my mom didn't want to sit at the bar... in hindsight, it was a pain for them but they were totally cool and accommodating. I felt bad every time they had to bring us our handrolls. We ordered the edamame with butter furikake to share, some individual orders of the fish broth/ miso, and I ordered the Xtra Medium which came with six handrolls. In a nutshell, I thought all the handrolls were really tasty. I enjoyed the soup as well. It also serve as a nice palate cleanser. It does seem a little pricey, but I don't think it's outrageous. It's pretty comparable to other handroll bars and I think the quality and service is great here. Definitely would love to come back.

Yelp
Sit at the bar and eat it fresh.. aka right when they make it and plop it down in front of you. If you are familiar with the dry aged fish guy, of joint seafood in the valley, then you will know the fish is dry aged. What does that mean? I'm not gonna pretend I understand the long ass complicated process, just pop over to eater la, as they do a great job of explaining it in their write up. Orrrr if you want to just enjoy the flavor of fish and not read a bunch, just know it's quite tender and has a nice fat taste. I thought every single hand roll was delicious. I'm actually not usually a fan of aging as I'm probably a unrefined person and once it's aged a little too much there is a stink to it that I am not a fan of. But this guys stuff is legit, somehow toeing that line of over doing it for me.. if you are sensitive to the stuff you might want to skip the otoro-- which my husband is happy to take from my plate. I think it's more pronounced the fattier it is or maybe it was just dry aged different from the chu toro pieces. I'll have to ask next time. Each roll is dressed up with a little extra surprise. The kampachi had a nice yuzu and kick to it, the crab had little crunchies, and one of them had something shiso ume flavored? I'll definitely have to be extra annoying and ask questions next time. Don't forget to get a bowl of the fish stock.. piping hot and the flavor is amazing delicious. Anyway uoichiba is a very very welcome addition to our neighborhood and I'm glad I have a place to get a very good hand roll. Hopefully they will bring the fish market over too so we can do some diy hand roll parties at home.

Yelp
Uoichiba for the win! I could eat these hand rolls daily and this spot is a no brainer for me when I'm at Citizen's Market. The counter is a fun place to hang or grab a meal to go. It holds up during travel and you'll want to come back for more. I'm always craving the fatty tuna. Staff is friendly and knows their fish.

Yelp
Simple & SPECTACULAR! My favorite sushi of all time and weekly go to. The set menu is straightforward and flawless, best fish in the game. They have the best, most genuine staff who feel like family. I love bringing new people to this spot for a unique experience with great food!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
They're a solid hand roll bar experience, I like them maybe a little more than some of their more chain-ified-ish competitors... but the size of the counter is not that big so they get crowded easily, and it's hard for me to stay they're worth waiting for. They do bento boxes as well but that's simply not as fun or unique an experience as hand rolls, so a bit less appealing there (not to slight them, but there's so much competition for sushi................). Soups are very good, intense without being too intense. And the food. Dry aged fish is a bit more intense, or maybe a bit more mild, depends on the fish? Maguro was a great opener, the chopped chutoro (?) had a good flavor but seemed less impressive than the maguro. Am a huge fan of salmon but can't say the steelhead was anything special-- also being steelhead, harder to make a comparison. Kanpachi (amberjack) might have gained the most from being dry aged but also seemed not as interesting as hoped. Normally I love shrimp but this one was cooked and I could have passed on it. I know blue crab is very much a Los Angeles thing, this one was very tasty, not sure what the crunch little bits were? Overall enjoyed it, but between the limited hours and the wait when you do get here (if you aim for lunch), hard to say I have any desire to make this a regular stop.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I'm a fan! Delicious handrolls and no line! Everyone here is so kind and easy to talk to. They don't serve alcohol but you can pick up a drink or a bottle of wine at the oyster bar just behind it.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the more casual feel of this bar. It's perfect for solo dinners! Fish is always super fresh and tasty! My favorite is the kampachi!
google avatar

munkey b.

Yelp
Got their Chirashi set wth additional specialty handrolls. Advertised as dry aged fish, none if them are! They tasted exactly like regular sashimi, don't waste your time here!
google avatar

Se S.

Yelp
Fantastic. This place and the oyster bar are the best spots in the Citizen's Market. I had take out once and was impressed and this last visit I got the Medium roll set. The Tuna, fat tuna and Steelhead were the stand outs, the shrimp was good too. I found the Kanpachi to be a bit over powered by the Yuzu Koshoo sauce. In the future I'd probably go for the 3 roll set since it has all my favorites. Don't miss the Fish Broth, it was so deep and flavorful. They have a Chirashi bowl that's only available certain days as well so I plan to try that next.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
These are not your typical hand rolls. All the fish they use is dry-aged fish. There is that special umami flavor to it that you can't get in most other hand rolls at other places. And make sure you order their "extra medium" set so that you get the daily special. It's kind of like getting an off menu item like the one in my picture. And when they bring you your roll, try to eat it right away so that you can still get that crispy nori in each bite. And their service was excellent. The staff was very attentive when we were eating there.
google avatar

Choua A.

Yelp
Oof! Food was terrible. Have to agree with Gregg L. about the quality of fish at Uoichiba. It definitely felt like something you could purchase from Ralph's deli.

Yelp
this is the #1 handroll spot in LA - hands down. the dry aged fish is stunning. the service is attentive and smooth in a modern and cozy environment. shout out to Eric for being passionate about his craft and taking the time to explain every dish to a first timer like me my new go to

Yelp
Service is terrible. They didn't explain that if you get it to go you have to makeup your own handroll. Once we received, When we asked to have them assemble, they refused

Yelp
I did 10 years as a sushi chef and am super particular about where i get my fish. This place is legit! Fish they are using speaks for itself with out needing much accoutrement. Simply dressed, as it served is best. Tried 6 different hand rolls and had to get 3 more. Each one was excellent with well seasoned rice and warm, crisp nori. The fish was all excellent and even my least favorite, the ebi shrimp was done with finesse and finished with ginger juice and masago. Cost is fair for the quality and thoughtfulness. Crew seems solid. I will be back

Yelp
Fresh, crispy on the outside & delicious! Hearty hand rolls that don't disappoint. Great customer service, the entire staff was welcoming. The chef checked in on us and gave us a yummy treat. Everything we ordered was perfection! Must try the miso! Will definitely be a reoccurring customer. Didn't have to wait in a long line and the friendly service sealed the deal with a 5 star rating!

Yelp
Eric and Max are the dream team. The food quality was exceptional and the service was amazing. There was also a gal with glasses that was very nice but I didn't catch her name. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
They advertise discounts and then slap you with hidden fees at the end. Actual discount on 50% off night was less than 30%. They force you into paying more than what they're advertising to get you in the door then blame management for bad communication. It's not our fault you're advertising deals you can't back up. From the second you get a table that ask if you want water then try to upcharge you by giving you bottled water Super transparency not crooks like these guys. Patronize literally anywhere else.

Yelp
Recently went into Citzen Place looking for a new hand roll spot, ended up at uoichiba and meet the Trio as they introduced themseleves. The rolls were amazing and so fresh. I highly recommend the crab and the fatty tuna. It paired really well with the saki they suggested

Yelp
Very yummy-I enjoyed each of the rolls. I got the 4 rolls (small) and they were nice to sub out the prawn roll for me. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This is our favorite place to get handrolls ! The fish is so fresh and the hand rolls melt in your mouth. The only problem is that my kids are now addicted! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I love this place! I go almost every week, everyone is so friendly, the food is amazing and it comes out so quickly it's perfect when you're starving and need to eat quickly but also great for a chill vibe and good time with friends! They have yummy sake and the miso is great too. The fatty tuna is to die for.

Yelp
Arthur, Franco, Eric, and Seqouia. What a team and super accomadating. I got the 4 piece set. They were kind enough to swap out the prawn for me. An incredible selection drinks we got sake and a sparkling yuzu drink. They made sure we were welcome and comfortable. I don't drive down to culver city often but i will definitely be back!

Yelp
By far, one of the best hand roll spots in the city! To anyone leaving a one star review complaining about the quality of service and/or the food itself is mentally unwell.

Yelp
Quick verdict: A real tasty treat and more dynamic than Kazunori. Background: My wife and I ate here during Uoichiba's soft opening and we made sure to grab a spot at the bar so we could eat the handrolls as they came out. Order: We both ordered XTRA MEDIUMS which included 6 handrolls for each of us as well as the Fish Miso Fumet. Summary: Overall, I thought the handrolls were straight gas and better than Kazunori in terms of taste. Uoichiba is slightly more expensive but I can justify it through the use of dry aged fish and special garnishes on Uoichiba's handrolls. The handrolls come out in a thoughtful order that clearly enhanced the experience through contrasting flavors and textures (the daily special had a crunch). The Kampachi was my x-factor favorite because it was garnished uniquely and had hints of citrus and a subtle level of spice. The amount of food was just right to feel more than satisfied but not overly full. Rest assured that I'll come back for more.

Yelp
This place is delicious, easy and quick. I think the fact that the fish is dry aged really sets it apart. It concentrated the flavor and made everything just a little bit fattier - yum! My faves are salmon and kanpachi. The chef also bothers to keep the nori crispy which is my biggest gripe with other hand roll places. No one wants a soggy hand roll. I've been trying to find an alternative to the chaos of sugarfish and this is it!! I stop in every time I'm in the neighborhood! pro-tip, they also have a valley location at The Joint Sherman Oaks where you can stare at all the fish dry aging in fridges.
