"The saga of unique Cambridge wine bar Upperwest is a long one, starting back in early 2014 with a Massachusetts Avenue location that never came to pass in the face of opposition — and some sketchy petition shenanigans — from a would-be competitor nearby." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"This looks and feels like your grandad’s basement — in the best way possible. Upperwest, a lower-level lair in a Veterans Post building in North Cambridge, specializes in cheese, charcuterie, and wine. The play is a glass of something red and the pasta special of the day." - Terrence Doyle

"At some point in your life, you’ve looked at one of those Italian-American social clubs or VFW halls and wondered what it would be like to drink in there. UpperWest is a North Cambridge wine bar hidden in the basement of a veterans hall, so while it doesn’t actually feel like the real thing, it’s close. Come here when you want eat charcuterie and have cocktails in a place that doesn’t look like it might have a dress code." - Dan Secatore

Great spot. Stop in for a drink. It's cozy and hidden but great owners.

Excellent hidden gem. They’ve improved signage since they opened but it’s still a little hidden to get to. Through the doors, down the stairs. That said, once inside the plce is incredible. Excellent wine and delicious food. High recommend as a romantic date spot! You won’t be disappointed.

The owners here are wonderful and truly care about their community. The food is spectacular, get there early before they run out of their homemade pasta! The wine selection has expanded since the first time I was there, and they cure some of their own meat in-house. Everything about this place feels genuine.

I read the reviews on yelp (sorry google), and the notes on spotty service were true. If they asked how things were going, I might have a better feeling -- maybe even had a couple more drinks too. Sadly the things they made (pate, pasta, etc) weren't as successful as the things they presented (cheese & meat boards). If I wanted some wine & cheese, I might go back... The ambience was nice, and there some positives.

I was very disappointed with the service I received, or more aptly the service I did not received. We arrived and noticed an estimated 10 patrons seated at the bar. The lounge was completely empty. We ordered our drinks and was escorted to the outside seating area. After a fifteen minute wait we inquired as to when the drinks would be served. The response was they would be out soon, they were very busy. We decided to move along to another venue. I will not return to this establishment.

Eclectic spot with classic cocktails and wines by the glass. Not to mention Amari (my favorite) and Whiskey flights! Decor is retro but perfectly fitting for the basement of a UAV, not stuffy. Some bar seats, reservations recommended on busier nights of the week. Large communal tables and some casual couch seating. Service is attentive and staff are polite/accommodating. Cheese/charcuterie boards have some really good cheese options, although I wish they had more meat options. Small plates are reliable aka the warmed olives. Overall great spot to connect with friends, eat/drink/share company.

Simple, quality cocktails, always a great cheese spread, and the specials never disappoint. I always call ahead to see what's on the menu, but I should know by now that it doesn't matter, it's going to be delectable.

UpperWest is an unexpected and wonderful spot. It's cozy, has great cocktails, and encourages chance conversations with other patrons. Personal cocktail favorites: Boulevardier and Paper Plane
