Best Gay Bars in Washington, D.C. According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Located right off Shaw’s busy Florida Avenue NW since 2015, Uproar is known for its “Rooftop Beer Bust” ($20 endless beers) on Sunday afternoons. The day party is especially popular with the bear crowd and patrons who enjoy the occasional snacks passed around by employees. The bar also hosts popular Latinx parties, drag race watch parties, karaoke, singalongs, and socials for Gaymers." - Evan Caplan

Sunday Funday World Pride Weekend! What more can I say. This was our first time here and we would have liked to see the rooftop patio, but it was a LONG line to go upstairs. So one of the employees, suggested we go to the downstairs, 1st floor, bar. He was so nice to give us the tip. The downstairs bar was not too crowded when we got there, but later it was packed and hoppin. The drinks were poured fast and the bartender was great. He kept the crowd singing and dancing along with the music videos. This place was so much fun. We will definately be back again. Did I mention that the drinks were reasonably priced too.

Google
Our group of 4 stopped by for afternoon drinks on a Sunday Funday. Super busy upstairs and a long wait. It was Pride weekend, so made sense. We ended up at the downstairs bar and this ended up being one of our favorite stops this weekend. The crowd was fun, very friendly and we easily met several people. Besides the music videos that the crowd sang along with, the bar tender was the star of the show. He was really busy serving the crowd and helped everyone quickly while showing his dance moves behind the bar. He set the tone for the afternoon. We'll be back!!

Google
The gay bar has transitioned to using hetero bartenders. The patrons of this gay bar line up for the one gay (as it appears) bartender which creates longer lines. The rooftop is the most popular place to hang out. Unfortunately that’s susceptible to weather issues. Sunday beer burst is popular if you like drinking lots of cheap beer.

Google
We flew in from Nola. This bar was recommended by a friend and it did Not disappoint. The men were friendly and our bartender Wyatt was Amazing. He danced, made great drinks and was very efficient. Went to the roof top terrace but came back down for the good service.

Google
Nice place… if you part of a clique, a team, a club, or a couple. But don’t think about going there alone…unless you’re a muscled Adonis type, you won’t get noticed or talked to. Just pushed around so the cliques have more room. Not what I’d expect from a 45+ crowd. 👎

Muleme Steven

Google
The place was very congested. I spend over 2 hours in the queue and still, I did not make it to the rooftop. I had to leave and went to a different location. However, I enjoyed the chicken breakfast on the sticks. I don’t think I will ever go back to such commotion!

Brian Copes

Google
Went last night for a night out of gay bar hopping and fun with my boyfriend and it was nice. Loved the multiple floors, DJs, and outdoor patio space. The bathroom was even clean and nice too. It wasn’t a popular night due to low crowds, but overall I was impressed with the venue and possibilities once there’s a good size crowd. Overall, I would recommend it but make sure you go on a good night where you have the energy of the crowd with you to dance and drink the night away.

Google
Fantastic place with good food, friendly service and welcoming patrons. The rooftop bar is great!

Yelp
Nice bear club, very expensive drinks. Live Dj on weekends, shows during the week. Rooftop lounge area very nice.

Yelp
Let's be clear...as Thee Femme Food Critic...I was told this Bear Bar was becoming a pinnacle of DC nightlife. Sooo, I had to see for myself. Here's the tea add your fixings: Food: They are the last of food specials on the Florida Ave. NW/U Street corridor. On a Thursday night, they have $3 rail and $6 burgers . Service: It's clear that this venue only hires people who want to be here. It serves commUNITY for and by commUNITY. AMBIANCE: I love diversity. It gives just that. The karaoke is cute and a half. I appreciate KJ Symphonee as the ONLY Black Queer Femme KJ in the city. I'd say it's worth looking into.

Yelp
Had a great time here with friends. They had an amazing drag show. Staff were very friendly, drinks were good. Didnt get a chance to hang out downstairs but will definitely try next time.

Yelp
Such a fun spot for karaoke and happy hour on Thursdays! Karaoke starts at 8! Super friendly and attentive bar tender and chill vibes. Drinks are only $3!!!!!!

Yelp
Great Summer and Spring roof top bar. I've only went for drinks with friends. The service was good and most of the bartenders were very friendly.
google avatar

Cherrod C.

Yelp
The staff is nice. The management just seems a bit....interesting. I am certain the rooftop closure BS will happen again come fall and I will simply not go there for large events.

Yelp
Uproar is the hidden gay gem of the U street corridor area. People often don't walk down Florida Ave to the little collection of bars and restaurants that are right off U street. Uproar is a very diverse experience, catering to the gays from all walks of life. They have a very inclusive and inviting environment that is perfect for anyone and everyone. Uproar has many different areas to fit your vibe. They have a chill bar area. They have a loud and proud dance area with a DJ. They have a MASSIVE rooftop area. It's all there! They host a lot of events like drag nights, viewing parties, benefits, leather nights, ect. It is always a good time with strong drinks and great music. They also have a bar food selection. Happy hour on their rooftop is simply amazing.

Thomas J.

Yelp
I love the ambience and the food is tasty and moderately priced. However, in my opinion, the roof deck area is what makes Uproar unique. The deck provides a great view of U Street and makes a nice environment to meet old friends and make new ones. Uproar comes closest to a 'bear' bar since the closing of the DC Eagle on New York Avenue in that it is the only bar in Washington that openly welcomes and acknowledges the bear community. 4 stars ****

Yelp
To the woman security guard - I cannot believe your behavior towards LGBTQIA men in your space. She was RUDE and unwilling to hear from any of us who are sober and willing to speak to you. Instead, you called security and kicked us out. I always thought of Uproar as a safe space but honestly, I feel UNSAFE with that woman security guard with the glasses. I understand you have a job to do. I am not fighting against that. But your unwillingness to hear us out was truly damaging. I really hope things change... I would hate to feel unsafe in an lgbtqui space again. I tried talking to her and she would not listen. Everyone I know will be hearing about this. So sad.

Yelp
Such a fun vibe on a Saturday. The line to get upstairs is so dumb though - they make the line long so it looks trendy. The line is on the second story beneath some CRAZY LOUD speakers. I wish I has earplugs for that. The bathrooms were gross and a bit ridiculous with the bouncer for them - but we had a great time once we got upstairs. I like that there's no smoking allowed upstairs (which is outdoors).

ric d.

Yelp
They herd you in like cattle. Had to move my car after standing in line for 30 minutes. When I returned, they told me I had to get to the back of the line again. Another 30 minute wait. Impersonal. Unresponsive. Go elsewhere.
google avatar

Yelp
I went back to Uproar, and wow was there a mood shift! The bartenders were energized and happy to serve. And there were actually people this time at the bar! A mistake in my earlier review. There are actually 3 floors at Uproar. The first floor with a bar you can sit at and order food. The second floor which I imagine serves as the dancefloor and lounge and the third floor which boasts the still massive open-air deck. A nice little surprise was that they were just giving out free corndogs! It was a nice surprise that was duly appreciated that I haven't seen since Town closed when they gave out pizza! I'd return to Uproar again.
google avatar

Veronica S.

Yelp
As always great music and ambient. Hang out a bit as have a few drinks. I love the patio on this establishment. Also sometimes is nice to be the only girls around!
google avatar

Oscar C.

Yelp
Definitely have gone to this place. DC Gaymers also hold events here and that's a bonus for me. Just wish Uproar would do more Rawhide events though. The one I went to was super full but super fun. Another fun event is Latin night which is called Candela meaning "Candle". Basically have never truly been on other nights. I guess maybe I'm just an event guy.
google avatar

Breck O.

Yelp
Rude and judgmental bartender downstairs doesn't know how to communicate with his patrons. If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. He may be entitled to his opinion but we weren't even talking to him directly... but he felt the need to add himself in to our conversation with someone else at the bar. LGBT people get enough criticism outside the community, there is no reason to throw around criticism within the community We will take our business elsewhere.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and they are in no way closed at 10pm. Everybody's super friendly Loved it!!

Yelp
Your gay Sunday funday destination in DC, especially for the summer time. I can't speak much for the rest of the week as I have only been here a handful of times outside of Sunday. On Sunday they have the now infamous beer bust. It's supposed to end at 9 but if people are having fun I've seen it extended a bit ;). If you wish to partake it's $20 and unlimited bud light (and shock top now I hear). Apart from that the rest of the drinks are regularly priced. But, the owner, Tammy, is sometimes walking around the rooftop handing out shots. During the summer the roof deck, a combination of roofs over two old row houses, is a great place to hang out with friends and have a drink. There is always free food being passed around en masse to sop up all the alcohol and keep your Monday hangover at bay. It's no frills, but fun all the same.
google avatar

Le Bec Fin ..

Yelp
Best rooftop gay bar in DC. Bartenders are attentive. Drinks are strong. Good music and overall good atmosphere. Diverse crowd.

Peter S.

Yelp
Just walked in for the first time on a Thursday at 6:30 pm where many places may be offering happy hour . I asked and the bartender said no . I ordered a bud light and was charged 8 dollars . Yep 8 dollars for a 10-12 oz draft beer. I told him it was a rip off and he said email the owner. Would you go back to a dive gay bar charging $8 for a draft beer . The bar was empty and that's why .

Kevin L.

Yelp
I'm giving you a 5 BUT you need to get rid of that black, security guy with the glasses ! Every time we go to Uproar we get stressed out about this man thinking of he's gonna come up with something new to bother us. First incident we had with him: he stated that our vaccination cards were not real (middle of the pandemic) we had to call the manager, Alex, to get that sorted out. He told Alex that we had disrespected him when all we did was to please reconsider it and let us in or talk to the manager, I guess that's what bother him. Second event: he kicked my boyfriend and my friend out for no reason like he just picks on people and mostly picks on latinos. Number 3: for pride weekend I feel like he almost was about to beat me up! He screamed at me in front of everyone because I had saved my boyfriend and my two friends their spots in that long line to get in since while they had gone to put their small bags in the car. He SCREAMED AT ME IN FRONT OF EVERYONE WHEN WAVED AT THEM AND TOLD THEM TO GET BACK TO THEIR SPOTS WHERE I WAS SAVING THEM. He told them to go back to the beginning of the line, all the way and horribly screamed on my face "DONT DO THAT SHIT AGAIN! OR ELSE IM KICKING YOU OUT BITCH" like i could not believe it when he said that!! That was so embarrassing and mentally damaging and honestly I almost decided to leave and to the point of almost having a break down. PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU TO CHANG YOUR SECURITY STAFF ! I loveeeeee ALEX & the staff but please you gotta do something about him! Thanks!

Yelp
Uproar is your basic neighborhood bar and is exactly what DC needs. The roof deck is a nice place to hang out. Tends to be a lot less pretentious than other gay bars. Drinks are strong and bar tenders are cute. Sunday beer bash is really fun.
google avatar

Edward B.

Yelp
I love this place! The atmosphere is casual and there are three levels to explore. There's also a great rooftop area to enjoy. The staff are extremely friendly, the drinks and food are reasonably priced, and there are great happy hours.
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
Uproar did a really great job with their renovations and expansions. I like the fact that there is a large roof top area and a dance floor on the second floor. Dj was really good and bartenders are very friendly. It really seems like uproar is starting to fill the void that was present when town closed a few doors down the street.
google avatar

Larry G.

Yelp
My friends, my husband, and I were like "let's go check out a new gay bar!" We all bundled up for the cold weather and met each other at Uproar. At first glance, we were like, "oh" because it's a really small bar and it's really dark which is definitely not Deaf-friendly. We all went upstairs to have dinner. The menu offered some decent selection. However, when my party was ordering, we were told, "that's not available right now until a later time". So, wait, this is a brand new bar and you are offering food that you don't even have?!?!? O...............k! After some changes, we finally got our food. Uhm, the food arrived cold. Some of us didn't even have a second bite or finish it up. The waiter took forever refilling our drinks or bringing the check. You'd think he was serving 100 tables but he was only serving 2 tables. Afterwards, we headed back downstairs for drinks. We all looked at each other and decided that Nellie's, a gay sports bar about 2 blocks down, was a better option and off we went. Uproar already needs some sprucing up to do.

Stephen K.

Yelp
Honestly it was pretty great. Very relaxed atmosphere - felt like Nellie's without the fire hazards or claustrophobia. There was space to breathe without it being empty or anything. Can't stress enough how much of a relief this was after feeling like I'm always choking for air at the other bars around here. Everyone there seemed really nice, bartenders were nice. Customers were friendly without us running into anybody that came across as sketchy. Street-side parking was pretty accessible and well-lit. That being said: cash only? In 2018? It's such a hassle to pull out cash, I never use it and it was a huge bummer for my friends and I. Thankfully one of us had some cash on him but it left the rest of us really disappointed in an otherwise great bar. This place is seriously like, a couple Square readers and iPads away from being perfect. Not quite sure what the other reviewers were talking about in terms of dress code. I had on a polo shirt and jeans but I would say 90% of people there were wearing shorts and a t-shirt. A couple guys were even in shorts and tank tops.
google avatar

Sammy T.

Yelp
We've hit up UpRoar a few times since they've opened. Like a lot of new establishments, they're still working out staffing kinks, etc. but I thought the service was friendly and attentive. Our food came out less than 10 minutes after ordering and someone was constantly refilling waters, taking up used plates, wiping off the table, etc. Their wings are some of the best in the city. Another night we tried the UpRoar sliders which were ok, and the tacos were a little vinegary but we gave our feedback to the waitress and they immediately asked what they could do to improve. Speaking of, we've meet the the owner and managers and each time we've made a suggestion on food, drinks, even music selections... We've seen changes when we've gone back. So to all you Bitter Bettys who love to bitch on Yelp, next time, ask to speak to one of the managers and give them constructive feedback, you just might be surprised that they'll go out of their way to make things right for you. PS- the owner, managers, and staff are all super friendly. This is definitely going to be a fun hang out for bears and everyone else in the community!
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Re-branded as gay bar, Uproar is a great escape from the normal scene of Nellies, JRs, Cobalt and Town. Even better, Uproar has a fantastic third floor deck that will quickly become a staple of summer time drinking. The second floor constantly is playing music videos that you can help DJ, thanks to an online system for all your dance hit needs. Maybe just don't play My Heart Will Go On. (A mistake a kickball friend made...) I can't attest to the food, but know that the drinks had a heavy pour just the way I enjoy them and the setting allows for a Saturday or Sunday fun-day for the books.
google avatar

Chad P.

Yelp
Friendly, clean atmosphere with a lot of people on a Sunday late afternoon. I guess there was a specific event happening. Rooftop Bar was fun and crowded and apparently the owner pitched in to buy pizza for everyone because of their patronage. That was a very nice gesture! The other floors had good groups of people and air conditioning. Would definitely go to again next time I'm in DC!
google avatar

K F.

Yelp
I've only been for the nightlife. It's a great spot for a change of pace when you're out for the weekend. There are 3 levels with a different feel on each floor. On a slower night, the first floor is a great place to hang out with friends and request music you like. On a busy night, there is good dancing/DJ on the top level, and when it's warm, the roofdeck is a great place to get some air.
google avatar

Drew A.

Yelp
It's ok. Takes a long time to get a drink. Also there is literally poop on the upstairs deck. They didn't clean it up but they still told us we couldn't smoke. Sad. Sorry. Don't come.

James N.

Yelp
Staff here are rude. A barback kept trying to take my food away even though I clearly was not finished eating. The second time I asked him to please not do that. He then started arguing with me, but his English was so poor I could not even understand him. Really unpleasant. This happened at the rooftop bar on the evening of 7/26.
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
I watched one of their bouncers follow, and start a fight with a group because they "pushed him". I got in an uber while the altercation was still happening, but I did not feel safe here. For those who want more context: The bar itself was nice, I really like the new rooftop they have. When I was ready to leave, I walked to the front and saw the bouncer having a heated discussion with a group. He was denying them entry, I don't know why. One of the patrons was combative, but his friends pulled him away towards 7th street. The bouncer radioed to his supervisor that, "someone needed to come down here, because a guy just pushed me". At that point he walked down the street and followed the group, and a manager walked out of the club. During all of this I was waiting for an uber, who had just pulled up at the corner of 7th and Florida. I walked toward the uber, and ended up being caught in the middle of a fight between the bouncer and the aforementioned group. During the shuffle, the bouncer grabbed me by my shirt (he was grabbing/swinging at anyone who was near him), and ripped it. I removed myself from the situation as quickly as possible, got into my uber and went home. I'm now left with a ripped shirt, and no idea what repercussions will come to a bouncer who starts fights with people on the street.

April B.

Yelp
While the bartender was great, I couldn't say a bad word about him. I truly am disappointed in the customer service that was provided in this establishment. It's obviously somewhere you go because it's a party environment, not a great cocktail program. The bartender accommodated my needs and was great. This is somewhere for an easy beer or basic liquor drink. My lack of stars is due to my own experience working in the industry. I acknowledge that my level of expectations may vary from others. I was here after a brunch as well as a few other spots for a friends birthday, and we were lookIng for the right spot to dance and drink. We chose here, to find there is no DJ, and they recommended downloading JukeVision to play songs. I'm very familiar with digital juke boxes, but when I downloaded said app, and attempted to play music it was less than user friendly. My group decided to leave and I thought I would inform the staff of my struggle and why the group was leaving. When I attempted to show them it wasn't the most user friendly app, they were less than interested, and told me their business happens later in the night. They proceeded to disengage. It seemed as if they did not care. I was with over 10 people who would have continued ordering alcohol had we had a more welcoming environment. We're now across the street at Nellys paying them and enjoying their music.

MJ S.

Yelp
This is my favorite LGBT bar in DC! No attitude, good music and a huge patio. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Rusty O.

Yelp
Uproar is DC's new bear bar that just opened in January. The owners have put in a lot of time, money, and effort into it and it shows. It has 3 levels: a bar on the first floor, dining on the second floor, and a rooftop deck with another bar. It is very clean, the drinks are very reasonably priced (especially considering that they carry higher quality rails than all other bars I've been to). The current rail vodka is Smirnoff - not too shabby. The food is very tasty as well. It's a new place, so be patient with the service and you'll be fine. The owners are attentive and very kind, working behind the bar and waiting tables as well. Can't say enough good things about this place. Give it a try!

Chris C.

Yelp
Cool spot, when it's busy the lines to get a drink get out of control and you don't want to go downstairs or you're gonna wait in a different line to get back upstairs.

William C.

Yelp
Friendly bar with great deck when weather permits. gay crowd, somewhat older. Some dancing or drinking or hang out with friends or make new ones.

Mathew R.

Yelp
I am reviewing this for the food - not the bar. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, wings, and fries. The burger was only OK. I had asked for no BBQ sauce, and it came with BBQ sauce. The fries are not good. Just. Not good. The wings are horrible. Don't waste your money. Again, can't speak for the bar scene here but the food is just not good at all. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Luis Z.

Yelp
Friendly bar tenders, strong drinks, mixed crowd. The roof was very pleasant and didn't feel crowded even though it was busy.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Great bar, 3 floors and continuously expanding, great staff and the owner is always around with complimentary food on Sundays!
google avatar

Tyler B.

Yelp
I came here and had a pretty good time. The only downside is that the bathroom lines were always at least 10 people deep. They only have single use bathrooms and the staff, of course, gets to skip. So try not to break the seal!
google avatar

Fernando H.

Yelp
I love this bar. Tammy is a great owner who tries to meet all customers. They know how to pour drinks. Great atmosphere to bring friends. Bouncers are amazing people when you meet them and talk to them. Uproar is home.

Matthew R.

Yelp
When Uproar first opened, it was just 3 stars. The downstairs level was thin and narrow, the middle level was barely utilized, and the top level was small as well. However, now it is 5 stars. While the downstairs is still small, the middle level is much bigger with ample space, and the top level is bigger with the expanded outdoor deck area. In addition, the music was great. It was similar to a club environment which is missing in the area. Finally, the bartenders on all of the floors were great. They did not have attitudes and were able to make your drinks quickly. A new sports Bar in Adams Morgan should take lessons from Uproar about customer relations.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
I'm a big fan. It's easy going and not pretending to be something it's not. I always feel relaxed here and the people are super nice. One of the most fun niche gay bars in DC.

John D.

Yelp
The rooftop area is an Intercity rooftop space. Certainly the view is nothing amazing, but it's hard to find a rooftop patio area in DC. We thought the bartender was very nice, and very accommodating. The beer selection was good and the prices were very reasonable. We looked over the bar food menu, ask about recommendations, and made selections. The price seemed low for the food and when we got the food we understood why the prices were low. The nachos had some type of processed cheese, like you get at the ballpark, poured all over them. There were not not too many tortilla chips, some black olives, and some pre-packaged cubed chunks of chicken. I would go for the drinks with friends, it was a happy crowd. I've seen similar reviews about the food. I would have to agree that it is really not a place to get a bite to eat. I would go back for a drink and to hang out with friends. So only three stars because if you want to be a restaurant you have to do a good job with food.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I'm updating my review after returning to Uproar the last couple weeks on Sundays for their "Beer Bust" events. The atmosphere on the roof-deck has definitely changed for the better as they have added a bar and created official specials for the Beer Bust. It also seems they changed their bar manager which has made a positive impact on the experience. This last Sunday while my friends and I were finishing up our last beers, the owner (Tammy I think?) , came around with multiple trays of sandwiches to give out to people for free! I thought that was quite awesome of her. I will definitely be back for more Sundays to come.

Grant M.

Yelp
Was a fan of this place until they started to allow people to smoke on the rooftop bar. Avoid this place if you if you prefer not to have your drink and conversation interrupted by the foul stench of smoking.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
This is a pretty great place. I don't know when previous reviewers came. The lightning is actually great. It's very easy to see. The service is fast and staff is friendly. I've been twice and food always comes out very quickly. Also it's not rebranded Asian food. It's a small plate shareable set up. We've had, over two trips: gumbo, wings, pot stickers, sliders, catfish fingers, and tamales. The food is very reasonably priced. The options we ordered ranged from $6-10. There are two floors and a rooftop bar. The place has a good vibe and great music. It's a great neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Harry M.

Yelp
Great new gay bar with a nice mix of clientele. The bartenders are nice and the prices are reasonable especially during Happy Hour.
