Brooklyn Pizza Restaurant Diamond Slice Will Open in Greenpoint | Eater NY

"A pandemic-born pizza operation started in summer 2023 by Peter Chrostowski that sold pies out of his Clinton Hill cafe after it closed for the day; the project began when he started making pizza on his own during the pandemic and served as the springboard for opening a dedicated restaurant in Greenpoint." - Nadia Chaudhury

90s-Themed Pizza Darling Upside to Debut First Brooklyn Location in April | Eater NY

"A ’90s-themed pizzeria that’s earned a reputation for treating the classic New York slice with a high-quality, carefully sourced approach is opening its first Brooklyn outpost in Greenpoint this April at 640 Manhattan Avenue, near Nassau Avenue. I note the menu will mirror its Manhattan shops, offering $3.50–$5.50 New York-style and Sicilian sourdough slices topped with mozzarella made daily on-site, including cheese, pepperoni, mushroom with white wine lemon cream sauce, and distinctive pies like the Upside Don — a Sicilian-style pie with tomato sauce splattered on top of cheese and breadcrumbs. The Greenpoint location aims for a more sit-down experience than the chain’s takeout-friendly Manhattan spots: it will be Upside’s biggest site yet with a handful of tables, a standing counter, eight bar seats, a front patio encased in ruby red matte tiles, to-go slices, and hours from 11 a.m. until midnight (as late as 3 a.m. on weekends); a liquor license is in the works so cocktails, natural wines, and craft beers will be offered." - Emily J. Google
Greaaaaaaaatttttt Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milkshake! So delicious, I’m dreaming about it still lol, if I lived in NY I would go more often. Andres the bartender was amazing and sweet! Made the milkshake with love. I had the triangle pepperoni pizza slice & the square ( corner my fave ). The triangle one was BOMB . COM, the square one was good in my opinion. Ima pizza fanatic so to me it was regular gooood. My best friend was in love with her square plain pizza, so it’s just preference lol Garlic knots!! Perfect priced, and a great size. My only complaint is that they’re premade so no garlic oil/juice to dip the knot in, I personally don’t like marinara like that but besides that.. I loved!!!!

Juan G.

Google
This is super tasty pizza, the crust is perfection. Crisp and delicious. Pepperoni covers every inch of this slice. Location is amazing as it looks straight down Bedford Ave towards the park. $6 for a slice seems like the new normal for the area. The taste makes you forget the price

Pauline

Google
This has to be hands down one of the best pizzas I’ve ever eaten. The atmosphere, the vibe, and the service are exceptional. Von, who was the cashier that night gave such thoughtful pizza suggestions esp for new customers. He and the other worker were soo patient and kind to us. My fiancé and I were initially going to go to another restaurant but the look of other people’s pizzas drew us in. We’re soo glad we made the decision to try this place out. Go try it yourself if you’re nearby!!

Daniel J.

Google
Such a great atmosphere. Von was super nice and chill and so was the other worker. Came here with my fiance to grab a chill date night dinner. Lots of seating and great options for pizza. Theres also a hidden speakeasy within the shop which is really sick. Would definitely come back again

Matt M.

Google
I live across the street from this place. I’ve been here probably 10 times. Continue to try and give them a chance. Occasionally it’s edible. But sometimes it’s just gross. Right now it’s 7:30pm, and all the pizza they had there was old and dried out. I paid almost 10 bucks for two slices and I’m just sad. I don’t know how this place is always busy when they keep making bad food. I don’t get the hype. This cheese is old and grey. I nearly brought the pizza back for a refund after this single bite but I’m too sad to get up now.

Google
A good spot for a quick bite for a slice of pizza🍕. Came in for a slice late night after dinner because we were still hungry. I have had better pizza but the sausage & peppers pizza and the Logical Conclusion beer definitely hit the spot for the night! A little bit of loud, chaotic vibes given the crowd that this place attracts. But overall, pretty solid.

Tal B.

Google
I ate pizza there tonight. The pizza was reasonable... very expensive. Not worth such an expensive price. Plus, the sauces that other pizzerias give you for free cost money in this place. The toilets there are filthy. Very very stinky. The staff is very unfriendly. The air conditioners drip on the tables. And when I wanted to put some Parmesan cheese on my pizza the container was empty. I wouldn't recommend this place. I won't go back there. The only reason I was there, despite everything, is because they were open until late at night and everything else was closed.I'm attaching a video I took of the air conditioner dripping onto my table and onto me. The music there really high volume. So if you also want to sit and talk to each other, I think it won't be a good fit for you. The person can barely hear what I want to order because the music is so loud. NOT RECOMMENDED

Jason C.

Google
Pizza was fine. Despite having a sit down food area, staff didn’t let me use their customer bathroom because their “bar was closed”. Not sure sit down restaurants are allowed to close their bathrooms and still accept customers. Staff were not rude, but if you’re charging $7 for a re-heated slice of pizza, and asking for a tip on carry out, you can at least have facilities open. But that’s NYC for you.

Yelp
Yum yum yum - got a cheese slice and a pepperoni slice after hanging out in Ask for Janice. Thought the salt level was perfect, good sauce to cheese ratio (one not overpowering the other), and was piping hot! Thought the crust was pretty tasty too. I wouldn't go out of my way, but definitely coming back for a slice or two when I am back in the area.
google avatar

Jina P.

Yelp
To be honest, I really wanted the grandma slice but he put this slice in the oven quickly and I didn't object. The slice was piping hot when it came out of the oven but it was a bit on the saltier side. For $5, it's also not the cheapest slice either. For these reasons, I probably wouldn't come back here unless in a pinch. It's not bad, but certainly not the best.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I thought this spot was pretty good, especially for being open that late! The mushroom slice was excellent, really fresh, creamy, well-cooked mushrooms. To nitpick, some lemon zest (like Fini) would've taken it to the next level, but it was great. The next best was the spicy vodka, which had more of a tomato (almost tomato paste) flavor and less of the creamy tang that comes with vodka. But that being said, the texture of the dough was great. The square slice was last, because of the recook, the bottom was burnt while the middle and top were cold. It was pretty bad :( all things considered, I'd come back for a late night slice, and probably stick w the mushroom. Thanks team!

Mason S.

Yelp
The cheese slice was very greasy, very floppy. It was so floppy that the pizza fell apart on its own. I had to maneuver my neck in angles to eat it. I will never return to this place ever again.
google avatar

Jillian B.

Yelp
The pizza was good, but at $5ish a slice, not entirely worth it in my book. Scratched the itch but would likely go elsewhere next time!
google avatar

Maddi B.

Yelp
One of my new favorite slices in NYC. I'm still thinking about this pizza days later. I didn't see a written menu so I just ordered by pointing to what looked the best, and my eyes did not deceive me. These slices were AMAZING and I can't wait to be back!!
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing I had a grandma slice and it was everything you could dream for . 10/10 just got . And don't forget to ask to use the bathroom
google avatar

Theodosios C.

Yelp
Pizza Slices. GOOD. Nice sized Slices with plenty of flavor. I could smell the Pepperoni off the topped Slice. Don't know why UPSIDE doesn't make the BEST of Pizza lists. RECOMMEND.
google avatar

RaSheba J.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place and fell in love. I was going to go for the pepperoni pizza then I saw the mushroom pie. I asked the guy if it's good, of course he said it was... I wanted to be the judge of that. It was AMAZING !!! Tastebud overload but in a good way. I highly suggesting getting the mushroom slice but make sure it's fresh. The slice is made with a white wine lemon cream sauce. Y'all it so so so good! I literally ate here for a few days straight and had to force myself to stop. There's a decent size dining area to eat your slice, you can eat in front of the restaurant as well. Not to sure but it gives speakeasy vibes because there's a door you can go in to a club/extended restaurant.

Yelp
Poor quality. Inconsistent. Price gouged. I keep wanting to love Upside and have given this location so many repeated chances as it's incredibly convenient for a quick lunch being right across the street from my apartment. First off, what NYC slice flops all droopily like that, even when folded? Don't think it's an oven issue because the bottom crust does appear to have a satisfactory char. The issue is in the ratio of toppings. Soooo much cheese! Way too much sauce. On top of that, the fact that these slices are 5 bucks a pop regardless of whether you're getting all veggie toppings, sausage, pepperoni or plain cheese.... inflation is real, and restaurants have been put in an impossible position over the past few years, but most slices in the city run about 3.99 to 4.50 nowadays. And Upside is no small struggling mom and pop! With four locations across the boroughs, this sort of price model is pretty surprising COUPLED with the poor quality ingredients and inconsistency.

Yelp
Pizza is getting more and more expensive by the year - my goodness. I think my specialty spice was like $6. This place is brightly lit and service is fast. Came in late night. I was still hungry from dinner so went for the mushroom slice. Just what I needed to satisfy the tummy.
google avatar

Shantee E.

Yelp
Pizza here overall is super delicious! I have to say their Spicy Vodka Slice is my new favorite NYC slice. I'm all for a thin flavorful slice and this place has definitely got some good options. The mushroom slice was delicious and my bff said the pepperoni slice is just perfect. The guys who make the pizza are super patient and answered all my questions and made some good suggestions. I had to go back for the Spicy vodka slice again and definitely will be back!! Their bathroom is clean and they are expanding to have a bar type vibe in the back, very Brooklyn! Love this spot so much!
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
I would rate Upside Pizza three and a half stars. Shared a sausage and peppers slice with my wife. Super thin crust. Some of the crust broke about halfway through so it could be sturdier. Toppings were all good.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
The 4th Upside just opened in Greenpoint, the biggest location yet. There are a few outdoor tables up front, with the space for the upcoming 2nd Softside right next to those, followed by the slice counter and more seating, with a big area in the back and a full bar coming soon. Otherwise it's the same thing, serving a bunch of great slices. Didn't see squares yet on opening day, but probably coming soon.
google avatar

Kwok N.

Yelp
Upside pizza got my stomach upside down. Ordered a slice of the broccoli rabe & sausage, and pepperoni pizza for dinner. About an hour after my dinner, my stomach started feeling very funny and eventually I vomit everything back out. I didn't have anything else to eat after lunch, which was 5-6 hrs before that. So I know for fact, i got sick from the pizza. Will not go back for sure.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Always walk past this spot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and always say that I will stop in for some pizza. Well I finally did and it was so delicious!! Not just your typical tasting pizza from a pizza spot. The sauce, the cheese and the breading was delish and I enjoyed every bite! The place is very clean and they have a very nice outdoor seating that's kinda built into the restaurant.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Worst pizza I've had in Brooklyn and probably New York. Literally could not even finish the slice from the amount of salt taste it had.
google avatar

Josephine D.

Yelp
I came all the way from Harlem and was starved. Happened to come across this gem! They make great pizzas, have a cool environment and the service was spectacular!!
google avatar

Angie T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite slice shops in the city so it was great seeing them open a location in Greenpoint. They have a good amount of seating inside, plus a few tables out in the front. There also seemed to be an additional seating area in the back that is yet to be completed. But the most exciting part was seeing that they will be opening another outpost of Softside here. Cannot wait to come back for that. Their soft-serve is pretty amazing!

Meg D.

Yelp
The guy who serves the pizza is super nice. Their square pepperoni slice of pizza is truly ‍

Don M.

Yelp
Service in greenpoint very unsatisfactory and rude. Their menu says pie is $24. But if you buy one, they charge you $28. And are rude when you inquire about, and refuse to even look at the menu. You cant simply put a lower price to perhaps lure more customers.. then change the price at checkout? cmon man.
google avatar

Jesse K.

Yelp
Classic pizza spot with a few options. Really nice inside, clean. Haven't tried anything stand out but exactly what you'd expect. Good service nothing special
google avatar

Marcella A.

Yelp
The only way to get to use the bathroom in NYC is to purchase something. We'll I decided to give this place the benefit of the doubt and get garlic bread. Oh my lord the garlic bread didn't even taste like garlic bread it tasted like sour dough bread. I think they need to re do how to make garlic bread. Unfortunately I bought 5 pieces of it thinking it was going to be good I was very unhappy.

Brianna B.

Yelp
Tried paulee gees pizza first and it was good but wasn't great. Decided to try this place next and it was amazing ! Best pizza in Greenpoint !
google avatar

Anne W.

Yelp
Great food. But the man who pulls the pizza is so rude. I ordered some slices, and he gives @sshole vibes & makes no acknowledgement of me speaking but puts the pizza in the oven. Later, the kids I was with said they wanted to sit in the booths, and he decided to speak- rudely! To tell us we couldn't sit there. But a woman was back there in her laptop? The kids said, "but that lady is there!". She then moved into a different booth to hide. So the 4 year olds sat at a high counter where they inevitably dropped their pizzas. I've told a lot of people about this place but this interaction made me embarrassed. Not going back.
google avatar

Junior T.

Yelp
WOW! The mushroom and lemon slice is SO GOOD! Def plan on coming back to grab another slice and maybe some soft serve! The dude serving the pizza is A+!

Samuel G.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza; whenever I go anywhere else for a slice, I end up regretting it. The square slices and mushroom slices are especially delicious.

Molly H.

Yelp
So good. Came here late night, pizza was delicious and just what we wanted. Plenty of cheese, thin crust, somewhat charred
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Extremely mediocre. Went a little over an hour before closing. Had one of their more exotic pizzas in terms of topings. It was immediately clear the pizza had been sitting out quite a while as the cheese had the exact same consistency as a slice reheated in the toaster oven 2 days after sitting in a fridge. Not a big deal breaker but at $5 a slice I expect more. If your pizza is like that either discount it or remove it from the display. Also, they started clearing out the front tables inside the restaurant well in advance even though customers were still coming in. Meaning folks were standing around inside eating their overpriced, mediocre pizza. Can't imagine going back.
google avatar

Enrique T.

Yelp
Hands down best pizza I've ever had, the slices where a great size and the service was awesome. Would highly recommend this spot and I'll definitely be going back when I visit New York again. Wish I had a slice right now!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Best cheese slice around. Just so so good. ps: anyone complaining about 'service' at a pizza slice place in New York...seriously, you need to question what you're even doing here in New York. It's not a thing. The thing is...you get a slice of pizza on a paper plate, it's delicious, you eat it. That's the service.
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
Pizza was perfect. The mushroom/white slice was legit top slice ever. Staff gave me my pizza hit and quick and took payment without issues. The negative reviews clearly don't get the customer service standard of a slice joint. They should have had a beer too and calm down.

Alowaan J.

Yelp
so delicious! i definitely recommend for a quick bit to eat if you are nearby. the pepperoni is great

Klaudia R.

Yelp
I was drawn into the shop by the vintage inspired look; it's a great place to go to for a quick bite and cute pictures. I ordered two of their specialty slices and got ice cream at Softside and both were delicious. The staff was super friendly and helpful with recommendations and even cleaned up after me when I spilled my can and gave me another one, free! Would recommend to a friend :)

Joe R.

Yelp
My first time at Upside Pizza and I enjoyed the pizza slice so much I had to order another. Something about the cheese! I recommend!

Adam A.

Yelp
Amazing pizza. Red sauce is the best in the city. Broccoli and sausage slice was my fav.
google avatar

Rachel E.

Yelp
I'm really not sure what's happened here over the past few weeks, but the service is bad. The staff appears to think that placing an order is an inconvenience? Used to be a fan, but can't say I enjoy being asked "do you want something" when I am looking at the menu or being asked "if I have paid" when I haven't even pulled out my card yet because they are too busy looking at their phone to look up.
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
The broccoli rabe on my slice was still sandy, must have been poorly washed. Not happy with the quality of the pizza as a whole.

Tom G.

Yelp
This is delicious pizza with memorable twists on classic flavors. The spicy vodka has an extra zing; the upside down Sicilian has an incredibly cheesy crust; the mushroom pizza is super creamy. It's just a pizza place, but it's always something we save for extra special nights.
google avatar

CHRIS k.

Yelp
Pizza is very good for a chain. Parmesan cheese and being burnt helps adds flavor. BUT THIS PLACE IS FILTHY. BEAUTIFUL space but the local family owned shops where are CLEAN! Lets hope they make it nice, and clean things up.

Robert V.

Yelp
I decided to try Upside pizza tonight. I tried to order a whole pie half sausage and pepper and half plain. I was told they couldn't do that. After thinking there was a miscommunication, I clarified that I wanted a fresh pie made with said toppings. Again, I was told that was impossible. And he said something about I can only order ingredient combinations that were already available for their slices to go. He also said he wouldn't know how to charge me since it's not in the computer. I thought that was weird. So I said charge me for a whole sausage and pepper pie but leave half of it plain. Again he said that wasn't possible. I reminded him that I'd only be saving him $$ on ingredients. He still wouldn't budge. I've eaten pizza in nyc for 45 years and never encountered such a bizarre circumstance. Equally disturbing was the look of fear in the (Mexican) clerks eyes as if he wasn't granted the freedom or flexibility to make a simple common sense business decision. I'm not sure if they're trying to appear cool or elite with that policy but this place isn't for me.

Neil B.

Yelp
Crispy thin crust with a good sauce to cheese ratio. Great spot for a quick slice if you're in the area.

Jackson C.

Yelp
Great pizza! Stopped into this place on the way to the bar and it was just what i needed! Staff was super friendly as well

Aida M.

Yelp
amazing pizza place, especially after a night out! amazing hospitable place for a quick break

Victor M.

Yelp
Easily top 5 pizza in the whole city amazing staff and good tunes what more could you ask for

Kevin V.

Yelp
Very good slice joint. I love that the slices are actually properly cooked! Staff are nice. Soft serve ice cream is good but maybe a little too cold/stiff. Their rotating seasonal slices tend to be really good as well. Could use a bit better seating situation but definitely great to drop in and pick up a slice or two to go.

Nelson S.

Yelp
Absolutely! Pizza compared to prince pizza blows it away! Having pizza like that was a long time
