The Newly-Revamped Uptown Sushi Debuts This Month - Eater Houston

"After closing its doors last year, Uptown Sushi is ready to reopen the doors and show off its brand new look. A post to the restaurant’s Facebook page indicates that its owners are currently waiting for final inspections from the city. Originally, the plan was to open earlier in February, but that date has since been pushed back to February 18 after a planned inspection was delayed. As Eater reported back in September, the restaurant closed in order to complete an extensive renovation, complete with new signs and fancy new wallpaper. When it returns, diners can expect a menu that’s pretty similar to what was previously on offer, including stunning sashimi platters, sushi towers, rolls, nigiri, and more. “We didn’t change our menu much,” a representative for the restaurant tells Eater. “The main purpose of our remodel was to reconstruct the space.” It’s possible that Uptown Sushi’s opening could be pushed back again, but for now, the plan is February 18. Stay tuned for any new updates." - Amy McCarthy

Miso soup was good. Branzino fish was very average and dry. Chicken rice was below average. Not happy with the food.

Google
Uptown Sushi never disappoints—fresh, high-quality sushi paired with a sleek, upscale vibe. The presentation is always on point, and the flavors are bold yet balanced. Whether you’re a sushi lover or just in the mood for a chic night out, this spot is a must. Great service, great ambiance, and consistently delicious food✨🤍

Google
Solid spot for sushi in Houston. The fish is fresh, the rolls are creative, and the vibe is cool and modern. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but you can tell they’re using good ingredients. Great for a night out or a date. It can get busy, so service sometimes feels a bit rushed, but overall a good experience. Not mind-blowing, but definitely worth a visit if you’re in the mood for good sushi!!!!

Google
Uptown Sushi is an absolute gem in Houston's dining scene, and it delivers a top-notch experience every time! The sleek and modern interior exudes sophistication, making it an ideal spot for a date night, celebratory dinner, or just treating yourself to something special. The vibe is chic yet inviting, striking a perfect balance between upscale and comfortable. The food is simply outstanding. The sushi is incredibly fresh, artfully presented, and bursting with flavor. Their creative rolls and sashimi options are a must-try, and they always have unique dishes that push the boundaries of traditional sushi. For those who prefer something other than sushi, their menu offers a variety of equally delicious options. What truly sets Uptown Sushi apart is the attention to detail—from the perfectly balanced flavors in every dish to the impeccable plating. The cocktails are a highlight too—crafted with care and a perfect complement to the meal. The service is exceptional, with a staff that is knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive without being overbearing. They go above and beyond to ensure you have a fantastic dining experience. Whether you're a sushi aficionado or a newcomer, Uptown Sushi offers a culinary adventure that is sure to impress. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a refined yet approachable dining experience. I can’t wait to go back!

Google
This restaurant is truly amazing. Tina provided fantastic and delightful service!!! They still serve my favorite plate: Kobe Cubes. It is rice under a Kobe beef cube which is under a quail egg. It is probably one of the best pairings I've ever had in my life. All the small plates we ordered we're so delicious we didn't even need to order entrees. Tina introduced me to a fantastic Japanese whiskey called Hibiki. It was absolutely smooth and tasty.

Google
This is my absolute favorite sushi restaurant of all Houston. The place itself is gorgeous, the rolls are A M A Z I N G, and the service is always top notch. My favorite dish is the Zubi roll, and the Kobe Beef Cubes. 100% recommended. Also, the drinks are delicious. I always have a good time there.

Google
My wife and I came there yesterday evening for a nice dinner for her birthday, and we were not let down. Our waitress, Christina helped us with a lot of recommendations and every single one hit the spot. We could tell the sashimi has better quality than most places. We are fans of the nice atmosphere and will be back soon!

Google
Uptown sushi has always been my go-to sushi restaurant when I’m in the area. I’m an exotic sushi snob and love that they have foie gras, ankimo, Santa Barbara uni, and sweet shrimp on the daily. I don’t usually order chicken wings at a sushi restaurant, but they’re sooo good here!! Great service and I always request Jennifer for exceptional service!

Yelp
Me at Van Leeuwen eating ice cream, yes, me at Urbe with the margs, yes, me at the rustic for brunch and a live band, of course, but me at Uptown Sushi, not until now. Tucked in the corner of the shopping strip, this spot is easy to miss, but after you give it a try far less so. I can't speak to the interior since I ordered curbside, but with an ETA of 8:15pm, and two to parking spots near the entrance, my two pieces of nigiri and a spicy salmon roll arrived to my car window about 5-10 minutes after the expected arrival time. From my order, there were two highlights, the Red snapper nigiri (a delicious bite, the spice on top the perfect balancing element), and the smoked salmon nigiri ( a thicker bite that delivered the smoke as promised. Simple but fresh and delicious). The last item, the spicy salmon roll with crunch on top is one I'll skip next time. When visiting, I recommend the nigiri!

Yelp
My friends and I spontaneously came here for a quick dinner on a Saturday night, we didn't have reservations but were lucky enough to get seated right away! The service was kind of slow but overall pretty standard. The menu is a little bit overwhelming but I liked that they had descriptions for each item. The Guava Smash drink was my favorite, slightly bitter but still very fruity. The Fiery Mango was good too if you like spicy! For the food, we shared two hot dishes. The dynamite shrimp was savory and a little spicy, so good! Kind of spicy mayo based. The kimchi brussel sprouts weren't terrible but not as good as we hoped, I would pass on it next time. Next, I really liked my hotate roll. I'm a big fan of scallop and it also had very light and refreshing flavors. I also had salmon, chopped spicy scallop, sweet shrimp, and kanpachi nigiris. The fish quality was comparable to a lot of sushi places, maybe a bit average though. Overall, we enjoyed the experience for a dinner out with friends!

Yelp
Please don't sit at the bar. Terrible service by the rude waitress. You're better off at a table. Sushi is great. Ambiance is nice. The newer spots like Sushi on Post Oak and TEN are waaaay better. This place needs new staff with a better attitude.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here after a work event less than an hour before their closing time but they had no issues with seating me! The food was delicious and the fish tasted fresh despite it being so late in the evening. The restaurant's decorations are minimalist and elevated and the lighting is quite moody and intimate. Great for a date night. Try the Spiro roll!!

Yelp
Very nice setting with fabulous selections. Great staff as wel!. I'd recommend to any Houston visitor.

Yelp
The uka roll is my fave! Soooo good! Definitely want to make reservations for a busy Friday night or weekend. The service is fairly fast and always have a good time there

Yelp
Edit: I started feeling sick to my stomach about 30 mins after dining here and I had to induce vomiting after reading the many, many accounts of people becoming seriously ill after eating here. Absolutely disgusting, this place should be shut down by the health department. My 2 stars are now 1. I always hear people raving about Uptown Sushi so I thought it would be amazing but it's soo not. It's in uptown park and parking was hard to find at 6:30 on a Thursday but they do offer valet as well. Inside it's cute and pretty, definitely looks fancy but don't let that fool you, it's not. The service left a ton to be desired, I sat alone at the bar, the manager and bartender were both there but not attentive whatsoever. I was one of the only people at the bar and they ignored me when I wanted to order more; I kept trying to get their attention but it was in vain and I decided to just get my check instead. The only time the bartender was remotely fast was after I put my card down to pay. I got the avocado, mushroom, grilled eggplant and tamago nigiri and they were all below mediocre. I have had much better nigiri at all you can eat places. It tasted cheap, not fresh and not seasoned correctly. The eggplant tasted super bitter and nasty and the tamago was overly sweet. I would have liked to try more but the bartenders apathy prevented that. I will definitely not be back nor will I recommend this place to anyone but I'm glad I could scratch it off my list. 2 stars for cute interior and edible food. Also they had a sizable vegetarian menu so I do appreciate that.

Yelp
I used to frequent Uptown Sushi a lot with friends. However, it stopped being a satisfying sushi spot and I could not recall the reason. Recently I came here again to try and remember. If you are seeking a relaxed atmosphere, perhaps for drinks with friends, I suggest this place. The service provided by the staff was excellent, although the quality of the food was average and has room for improvement. Nonetheless, I plan on going back to give it another chance in the near future.

Yelp
We found our go-to upscale Houston sushi restaurant. Our family of 3 had dinner here last night and absolutely loved the food. For appetizers, we ordered: Truffle Tuna - 5/5 - Who would have thought tuna pairs so well with truffle essence? Fantastic dish. Japanese Crudo - 5/5 - Another great dish. The scallions and Thai basil (?) adds just enough herbal hints to the whitefish. Dynamite Shrimp - 4/5 - Very tasty but had as good or better at other places. Not sure I would order again only because my stomach space would be wasted when so many other things to eat here. We had so many different variety of sushi, too many to remember them all but includes A5wagyu beef, uni (sea urchin), scallops (seared as well as spicy), unagi (freshwater eel), hamachi (yellowtail with house special preparation), ikura (salmon roe), chu toro (fatty tuna belly), soft shell crab roll, salmon nigiri... Overall, everything was excellent. The fish tasted fresh, the rice was well cooked/seasoned and the presentation was superb. We also really liked the decor of the restaurant. Modern, simple but chic! We've been to 2 other "high-end" sushi places in Houston. Uchi (which may be the most overpriced restaurant I have ever been to in my life which says something because I have been to many "overpriced" places) and 5Kinokawa (we had the omakase; the food was good to very good but the issue I had was that it seemed like 75% of the "courses" were tuna based - too little variety for an omakase but may work for the clientele the chef/owner is targeting [i.e. when we were there, it seemed like for the vast majority of the seating, this was the first omakase experience they had been to so maybe not very adventurous???] ). Uptown Sushi is not cheap but a bargain compared to these other places. We will be back!

Yelp
First date spot with my now husband. We had a variety of the sushi roll options that the lovely waitress had recommended. The service for both the edamame along with sushi were fast. We were sat and out within a hour. The feel of the restaurant is definitely upscale and spacious.
google avatar

Tristan F.

Yelp
Uptown is my favorite sushi spot in Houston. I'm sure there is better out there, but the quality of food, service and experience have always been top notch whenever I've visited. It's one of those places that every bite is better than the last.
google avatar

Clay C.

Yelp
I thought this place was decent value for what I got. Tuna, yellowtail, scallop and salmon roll came out to less than 30$. All the rolls were very good and had a rich flavor. Certainly would come back.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I am a sure fan of this place when it comes to sushi and usually get the Godzilla and Tata rolls since they're my go-to, along with the Spiro once in awhile. However, I decided to try the Shaggy Dog Roll from here tonight for the first time. It was very tasty, good quality and different in its base taste. I liked the fresh, cold water crab with the cooked shrimp and the dot of orange cream sauce on each piece altogether. The avocado added some extra nutrition of coarse even though I dislike the taste of avocado. It wasn't a problem though, bc it wasn't much in amount. I always enjoy the ginger and some soy sauce with any order here sushi or not. Great, friendly and attentive service from every person I came across on this visit while dining in. On a note, the round-shaped, flourless chocolate cake here is phenomenal if you get dessert.

Yelp
I'm from California where sushi is expensive soooo this place is cheap to me! It's so nice inside, I felt super underdressed but the staff was all so sweet and they went above and beyond! The sushi was tasty, I LOVE that they have so many vegetarian options! I love seafood but I got a roll with eggplant and veggies and it was so yummy! I recommend trying at least once for the experience. The AK Bites were also delicious - would go back just for these to be honest! Overall, very nice!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Small group for dinner and it was great We started off with drinks. Hot sake, lychee martini and a guava cocktail. Everything was really good. Started off with the chicken gyoza and lobster and shrimp roll. Both were really good. Then we ordered a few rolls. I don't remember all the names but the shaggy dog. If you ever been to RA! Then you know . Uptown's shaggy dog comes in close. Overall we had an amazing time and will be back
google avatar

Yelp
The food was AMAZING. I go there ones a month and every time I do my happy-food dance because their sushi is on another level! The stuff are always nice and professional. the vibe is fancy but not too much so going for a casual lunch is good as well :)
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Great quality, good customer service, good drinks. Parking is a bit of a hassle unless you use valet.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Uptown! We enjoyed a great Chardonnay the soft crab salad is devine! Perfect crab crisp and a wonderfully light dressing; complimented with the combo fried rice and then the Godzilla and Dragon roll. We sat at the bar; the service is always fantastic with a wonderful ambiance! We will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Came to Uptown Sushi for a birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. The sushi was delicious and fresh and well priced for the quality and quantity. We recommend the Kobe beef cubes, tata roll, 7 1/2 roll, yellowtail sashimi, chu toro, and Japanese fish nigiris. I would not recommend the OMG hand roll because the fish to rice proportions were off and too much fish roe. The ambiance is perfect for date night, but was hella dark where we started to get sleepy lol. I gave this place 4 stars because the service was not great, our waiter was giving us attitude and was not very attentive.
google avatar

Daniela L.

Yelp
Amazing sushi!! Please try their truffle tuna as appetizer. Great cocktails too. You can't go wrong with any of their signature rolls!
google avatar

Tega M.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I got seated. Waiter took our food and drink order. My GF goes to the restroom. As she was gone the "Manager" walks by our table, doesn't say hi or stop! Minutes later I see the "Manager" cornering my date for a period of time. My date comes back and tells me the "Manager" told her I can only have one drink. I walk over to the "Manager" and ask why she said that and she needs to pay for our meal for her lack of respect/tact/being a professional. She says no and tells me to leave. Another customer got involved and things got negative! No reason for her to walk by the our table and not say hi to confirm her suspicions. Jealousy is a disgusting thing!! GOD help her!
google avatar

Nancyrae S.

Yelp
One of my favorite sushi places! Most recent visit was a girl's late lunch - martinis, wine and a table of appetizers - teriyaki maki is all time favorite!
google avatar

Rodolfo O.

Yelp
Im going to give it a 3.5 really. Here is why. Half of the menu is not worth the price. The wagyu beef is fake or just simply flavorless. Not to mention the price tag. I have had wagyu beef in other places that rock my world at a better price. The good sushi is the special rolls. Those are delicious. The lobster rolls ate good.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Houston has a lot of great high end sushi. This has a bit to go to be one of them. We had 8 Sashimi portions between us and 4 were great , 2 par and 2 underperformed. Still good but not top. Cocktails were great. We did the green one. Wine by the glass also a bit limited.
google avatar

Ori B.

Yelp
Sushi is really good and the vibe is cool. I really liked the 7 1/2 sushi. It's really good. Service is good and plenty of parking in the mall. I will definitely come back here
google avatar

Am K.

Yelp
Not a great sushi joint. The service was terrible. We waited a long time for our food to arrive. Fish wasn't as fresh as one should expect from a sushi place. There are other places that serve better sushi. We won't return.
google avatar

Abbi J.

Yelp
Best sushi in Houston. Great service, ambiance, and quality of food. Love this place!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Great sushi and great lemon drop martini! Service was great at lunch time. The decor and ambiance is wonderful. From time to time you will see a famous person. We ran into BABABOOEY! He ate all the shrimp!
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Classy, Quaint and Great Food! From the greeting upon entering, by the awesome hostess to the exit and good bye as well, this a really great lunch and possibly an evening dinner get away. All things considered: if COVID is your concern the seating is well spaced. Noise level it's normal and not too loud. Service was grade A, 5 star, my server was very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. All within the 1 HR of my break from class, I was served, fed and out the door with extras, heading back to class. I would say see the pics, I did the best I could under the present circumstances (hungry). I apologize in advance for the pics that you are about to see. Menu was vegan friendly as well. I had the Vegan Sushi roll and did you see the part about it being Vegan? I also had the Miso Avocado soup, (note) this does come with shrimp and fish eggs, so I had those removed and believe me the soup is unbelievably tasteful even without them. I could have sworn, I tasted bacon, I am just they had the perfect combination of flavors. My water glass stayed filled! Plus, I did make a quick trip the facility's and it was exceptionally clean as well. I have book marked this restaurant and will for sure try this place again. So, until then. Bye-Bye!
google avatar

Shea M.

Yelp
Nice little spot, went during lunch time and it was a bit busy but accommodating. I ordered the Kimchi Brussels Sprouts, Shaggy Dog roll, and Belle 75. The drink was sooooo good but the edible flowers were messing worn me lol. Not sure if i really tasted much kimchi but the sprouts were yummy as well. Shaggy dog was decent, I've tasted better but I wasn't disappointed. I wouldn't be against getting it again. I'll definitely be back to visit and try some other things.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
The atmosphere and vibe is very open and inviting. Service here was great and the food was enjoyable. The food Quality is Fresh. Not to be bias but Don Chang defiantly knows how to make good restaurants with food you can bring VIPs and HC members to and know they'll have a blast.
google avatar

Gina F.

Yelp
Met a friend for dinner on a Tuesday around 8. We were seated right away even though the restaurant was pretty busy. Service was good overall. Sushi was delicious! For sushi we ordered a selection of rolls and they were all very good. Also ordered the wagyu with a little fried egg on top - so good! Decor inside the restaurant is gorgeous. This would be a great date spot.
google avatar

Janet G.

Yelp
We dined here to try it out and see what all the fuss was about. We'd heard about it bc of a recent (ish) senator who dined here. It was not great and does not deserve the hype. I rarely give negative reviews. The service here was not good. Bad. The sushi was okay at best. We love Tobiuo in Katy, La Centerra. Tobiuois cheaper and FAR superior. And service at Tobiuo is outstanding. Uptown was not worth the drive. After reading these reviews about a roach problem and food poisoning, I know I'll never go here again.
google avatar

Kimia S.

Yelp
Love Uptown Sushi! Have dined here many many times for birthdays, dinners and lunch. This place used to be my top sushi spot but in the recent times I've gone the service isn't as good as it used to be, longer wait for food, mistakes on the tabs, etc,. Other than that the food is always delicious and fresh!
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
Always fresh. Always consistent. I've been a faithful fan for years. Never disappoints. I just wish there were multiple locations.
google avatar

Tyson P.

Yelp
Uka Roll 5/5 Tata Roll 5/5 Hamachi Kama 5/5 Had to revisit uptown sushi since it been a while. Cant believe we never tried Uka roll before. Glad we got it this time. (If your not fan of mayo. You can Sub the mayo on top with spicy mayo).
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoy Uptown Sushi's ambiance. Would have loved to take pictures of my food, but we were fully engaged in each others company. The service was great keeping steady on table maintenance and our drinks magically filled themselves.

Keith S.

Yelp
We really enjoy the entire dining experience here, we love the sushi..... it is excellent the staff is attentive and the ambiance is inviting , grown and sexy

Veronica M.

Yelp
Truly like this place! Food is great! Ambiance is great! Drinks are great! Veronica

Yelp
Let me tell you about my last dining experience here. It was immaculate. We got the following: - chicken dumplings - shrimp tempura - Optimus roll - Shaggy Dog roll - Signature nigiris: Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, and Escolar Every damn thing we put in our mouths was spectacular! I can't tell you how satisfying this meal was. I literally dragged my friend here against their will as they were in NO mood for sushi. But I tell you, after leaving here, they couldn't stop raving about the meal. I left them off with a Drake line: you can thank me later ;) Maybe next time you ever think you aren't craving sushi, think again and just drag yourself over to Uptown Sushi. Get the rolls and signature nigiris we got. You won't regret it - This dinner hit the spot!
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
I was skeptical about the sushi here because they take forever to make your rolls. But, oh baby! Is it worth it! I couldn't stop eating! The dumpling apps first then 3 or 4 rolls!! Holy moly! A must visit again.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I booked a reservation for dinner for me and my wife at 6:45 and requested a booth if possible. We arrived about 10 minutes earlier, and after waiting 5 minutes we were finally greeted by the hostess. I asked if I could have a booth as requested, in which she answers "I don't know, let see what I can do" after spending another two minutes looking at her computer system, she answered "Sorry there are no booths available, all I have is a table" . My wife and I said it is ok , and before we were taken to our table the hostess adds " oh and by the way, you two need to finish dinner by 08:30 because I have another reservation" - this is the rudest thing I ever heard in a restaurant. We were taken to our table and as we walk into the dinning area we noticed there is not one but two booths available. We just turned around and left and went eat somewhere else. I will never be coming back to uptown sushi.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
The 4* is strictly related to the sushi we ate. It was very fresh and cut with generous portions. The rolls were unique and very clean. I was thoroughly disappointed in the rest of the dining experience. We hadn't been here in years and it was the top sushi spot in the city back then. This time the menu had expanded to include numerous times to please the masses. The drinks were adequate but their selection was limited. As I mentioned the sushi was great but the experience was underwhelming.

Oscar C.

Yelp
I never knew that coming here would ever change my sushi experience! The food was so good that I even have recommendations for people who haven't even eaten here yet. The wait was still a good 30-45 mins. at most because who's gonna make a 20 PLATTER OF SUSHI for a big group? So the service? Yes. Great and above all. The waiters over there are well behaved and super polite and even funny so, shout out Donald Chang. :) So my summarization? Food is beyond perfection with the effort of kinds souls and men and women that serve there are super polite and kind. And if you want a fancy, happy, deeeeeelicous dinner or lunch with some other people? Come on down here in Houston, TX for some Uptown Sushi

Michael B.

Yelp
Pretty solid overall. Not terribly expensive and the sushi is quality. I know the interior design is well done but the layout is odd to me.
google avatar

Tasfia A.

Yelp
Good food, a bit pricy but that's what good sushi will get you! I came here with a party of four and we were able to be seated right away...although we were seated in a corner so it took awhile for someone to remember to come take our orders. I basically liked everything I ordered from there. To me, the most memorable dishes were the Hamachi Kama, Kobe Cubes, and Japanese Crudo. We ordered other items but these three were my favorite! Parking situation: on-site

Martha T.

Yelp
It's our neighborhood sushi spot. Food it's pretty awesome and it has a great vibe. Service sometimes can be a bit tricky but overall it's a darn good. They have great cocktails too. It's good for many occasions.
google avatar

Patricia R.

Yelp
Service is impeccable! From the minute we arrived until the moment we left the staff was over and above welcoming, attentive, professional and efficient. These folks are on their game. The food was really good too. The sushi was all very fresh, and there were lots of original rolls to choose from. I had a delicious miso avocado soup and it would make a return trip so worth it. Enjoyed my visit.

Heena P.

Yelp
We went last night with a group of 8 people for my husbands birthday and they were great. No issues with us bringing a cake. They presented it really nicely. Service was fantastic. The manager got the two birthday boys tequila shots. We felt that they went above and beyond and the food was delicious. Three of us were vegetarian and they had some fantastic options. Would come again.
