Where to Find Vegan Pizza in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"This “New Haven-style” thin-crust regional pizza chain is spread through San Diego. Large pies arrive on baking sheets and are crosscut into various sized slices. Many combinations can be pulled out of the build your own section, or you can stick with the tried and true vegan as-is pizza topped with red sauce, onion, mushroom, artichoke, and arugula. Take-out and delivery available through Slice, Door Dash, and Postmates." - Kelly Bone

Google
We have been here several times and this pizza place is consistently good. Great thin crust pizzas as one finds in Italy. Great service team, tasty brews. Definitely a real nice place where they understand to keep it simple, consistent and quality. Keep up the great job!

Google
This pizza place is outstanding! Despite the unfortunate trend of other locations going out of business, this spot offers some of the best pizza I've ever had. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but the quality and taste are definitely worth it. Being in El Cajon probably adds to its charm. I can imagine if Urban Pizza were in a different area, it would thrive even more. Best of luck to you guys! Your pizza has been a delightful treat for my family and me.

Urbn Wood-Fired Pizza graces the middle of Main street in El Cajon, California. The service is excellent. The pizza is huge and the beer is fresh. They hit on all cylinders as far as I can tell. We chose to start with some wings and an order of Brussels sprouts. The wings were crispy outside, juicy inside and excellent no matter which sauce I dipped them into. Sprouts aren't my thing, but they were devoured in minutes so they must be right! We ordered a large mashed potato pizza. It wouldn't fit on the table in most restaurants, but Urbn just has picnic-style tables so no one is cramped. Delicious. Park in back and stop at Creative Creatures on your way in or out for a nightcap. Drive responsibly.

Google
Best food in the area. All take away right now but they provide everything you need. The wings are the best - go for the dry rub spicy for the perfect kick with some ranch. The meatball pizza was very good, enjoyed the thin crust. We arrived 15 minutes before they closed and the service was accommodating and quick.

Google
Great place for extremely thin crust pizza and drinks. Generally a quiet place with plenty of seating for the family. Staff is always nice and helpful. Highly recommended!

Google
Very nice pizza place with juicy and tasty thin crust pizzas. Don't be fooled by the sizes small/large as small is actually quite large and large is enormous. Plenty of seats and tables. Friendly staff and God-given tasty pizzas. If you haven't had pizzas here you just ain't trying to eat good pizzas.

Google
We had a very awesome dining experience. This was the first time we had eaten here and it was my birthday. I had the personal pizza and walnut salad. Both were amazing. Tbige sa leaf was by far mlmy favorite. The candied walnuts were amazing, especially with the gorganzola. He had the personal pepperoni and salad. His pizzas was good but slightly greasy. For two pizzas and two salads and an 8dollar beer, the tab was $35 I didn't think that was too bad.

Google
Mmmmm just writing about make me want to go and eat again. This are the best pizzas in town, so thin, crisp, and full of taste. They offer a great amount of IPA's, and have an amazing beer flights.

Yelp
I love this location! This was our go to place during the pandemic. We have not been here in a while so there are staffing challenges at this spot but the staff is still friendly but the new workflow involves ordering from the bar during my afternoon lunchtime on Wednesday. The salad, Brussels sprouts and wings were still delicious and straight from flavor town! The drinks are still good. The pizza we ordered was the BBQ chicken and the Margherita pizza gooey, crispy thin crust and delicious! Salad is nice and the vinaigrette is on point. Buffalo chicken wings hit the spot! Give this place bones and business. The pizza alone is worth the drive. Kid friendly, plenty of parking and real estate inside for a get together with friends.

Yelp
My employer hired Urbn El Cajon to cater an employee appreciation lunch. Two guys showed up in the coolest Dodge truck with a custom wood-fired pizza oven mounted on it. They set up in the lot and fired up the oven. They got straight to work. They went on to hand-toss pizza dough and got busy cooking. One fresh pizza after another into, then out of the oven. (B)Urbn BBQ Chicken, Pepperoni, Pepperoni/Jalapeno, Margherita and my personal favorite, the Mashed Potato and Bacon. Fresh ingredients on every pie. Wood-fired thin crust with a bit of char is my favorite. Also they used the cup and char pepperoni. Also my favorite. The little pepperoni that curl when cooked and get that delightful little char on the edges. So good. There was also a huge Urbn Salad (field greens, pear, gorgonzola, walnut brittle, house vinaigrette). I didn't have any, but my coworkers killed it, so I imagine it was pretty good. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but I did have one cannoli for dessert just to try it. It was really good. Rich and creamy. The two dudes cooking just kept bringing out pizza after pizza. We all took pizza home. Some took home entire pies. So much delicious pizza! Excellent pizza, excellent service.

Yelp
Been here a few times and every time is the same. Unwelcoming and bad service. Walked in with my wife after having some beers next door and had a sign up to seat yourself and order at the bar. That was one time. 2nd time had a waiter who was not the friendliest and felt as if they did not want to be there. Unsure how this place survives with no hostess or waiters/waitresses. But best of luck to you UrBN

Yelp
where is the Urbn we'd come to love?! Hadn't been in a year or so but went back a couple weeks ago eager for good beer and yummy pizza ... ACK! Seat yourself. Very Limited waitstaff. Two beers on tap. We ended up turning around an leaving.

Yelp
Pizza was burnt on the outside like chard. Mozzarella was fresh mozzarella, but it was hard the pizza wasn't warm. The bottom crust was soggy and the pepperoni was so oily. I had to use three napkins to get off all the grease as a staff friendly customer service great. Cheney salami and pepperoni pizza. I will not return and my bill was Wine not so much

Yelp
Great food and service as always! We had our leadership meeting and dinner here for 20 ppl. Easy to plan with their team and it was a great price. Thanks Francisco!

Yelp
Love this place but DO NOT recommend for Jury Duty lunch. Another review said this is a great spot for JD Lunch but they only have full size pizzas, you basically have to choose from salad or sides. Might be great if you are going w a few people. Service was quick, the place was relatively empty. I do look forward to renting their private dining room for an event in the future. She said it seats up to 30 and to just call ahead to book
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered two pizza's tonight. We ordered a pepperoni and cheese pizza and a cheese pizza. We received the two pizza's however instead of the pizza having mozzarella cheese on them which is what we ordered they put Parmesan cheese on them with no mozzarella. The pizza was also completely cold once we received it.
google avatar

Yelp
Best mashed potato bacon pizza ever! That being said, I've never had mashed potatoes on pizza, but am now a huge fan. 1-2 small pieces of bacon on each slice completes the flavor of this thin-crusted-carb loaded white pie with mozzarella. Ordered online and it was ready when I got there a few minutes before the call time. Good fresh, but also good toasted day(s) later.

Yelp
3/9/23 - I went there with a party of 2. We had Half garlic chicken Alfredo and half chicken pesto. Both very good the Urbn salad was fantastic. The service for the water was very slow. The pizza was good which we ate there. We ordered a full pepperoni and sauce to go to bring home for the rest of the family. The to go tasted good, real fresh, but lacked seasonings in the sauce. I give it 4 out of 5 stars overall. Pizza was thin crust and the crust tasted very good. Best

Yelp
I've been to this location three times. Each time it was to meet up with my family that lives closer to this location. It's at least an hour from me as I live further north. Each visit has been great and enjoyable. I have a URBN closer to me but it's much smaller. The pizza has been good and I like the thin crust. I think this is the only place that I've ever had and liked potato on a pizza. Who knew!?! The staffers were super nice and attentive to all our needs. If you are looking for a nice pizza and brew. Check them out. I'd absolutely love to go here more often and I would if only I were closer. Rush hour on the 52 isn't exactly favorable but worth it once you are finally there.

Yelp
This is a cool spot for some good food in El Cajon! Yes! A cool spot in El Cajon! LOL We stopped by here before a concert at the Magnolia. It was very busy but the food was very good. One issue we had was the service. This evening we walked in and saw the hostess and she said it would be 30 minutes but then changed her story and said their was a table opening up. Yay! 18 minutes later we were seated. No problem. Then it took another 15 minutes to be seen and order everything we could since we didn't know when we would see the waitress again. With all that said, our hostess was so nice and the waitress was so nice and really trying to help us. This is more of a management issue, why didn't they have ore than one waitress on a concert night? Probably many reasons but needed to note it. We ordered the URBN Salad and [B]URBN BBQ CHICKEN. Both were so good!!!!! So full of flavor and all the right combinations. The salad had pears, the typical apples. I was skeptical but they tasted perfect in the greens. The pizza was amazing! Besides the service issue this place is a very good place for some good food.

Yelp
5 days later and I am still talking about the worst $85 lunch (for 2) I have ever had. The waitress was not friendly or competent. I had to get up and find her for plates, salt, salad dressing, a soda refill, take home boxes, and our check. I got quite the work out. The ticket for 2 small pizzas, 1 salad, and 2 soft drinks was over $70. I don't mind paying for quality, but i could have gone to Dominoes and been happier and $50 richer. $26 for a small sausage and mushroom pizza with very little sausage and so little cheese that you can see the sauce. Raw potatoes on the not mashed potato pizza. I was super embarrassed that i took a friend there to celebrate her birthday. And what is all the black sprinkles?
google avatar

Yelp
The ingredients are all there, but the price and the selection sort of ruin it. Sizes are strangely picked. A regular is a large pizza, and the Large is so large it won't fit in your fridge. They are around $35 each. The ingredients are great and I love the thin crispy crust. I wish the menu had better options then they're few quirky topping choices.
google avatar

Vichny P.

Yelp
I liked how low key this place was. There were lots of people there but it wasn't crazy busy. We seated ourselves and order at the bar. They don't really advertise what size the pizzas are but we figured since it was just the two of us, a small would be good. I heard a lot about the mashed potato pizza so we opted to try that one. They make the pizza behind a glass window so u could see how freshly prepared everything is. The pizza was good, next time I'll try a different one. We got a side of wings to go with the pizza. Wings were good, had red pepper flakes and Parmesan cheese sprinkled all of over it. The ambiance was cool, some what industrial and modern looking. I'd come back!

Yelp
Been coming to Urbn, all locations including Basic in downtown. I've always been very pleased with the pizza. I'm a stickler when it comes to pizza because I lived in Sicily Italy for almost 2yrs. This is the closest I gotten to it tasting authentic other than Sorrento's in little Italy. They're amazing!! We ordered a large as we normally do and the last 2 times the pizzas where roughly the same size as a small. The first time we received a small sized large, I was a little bummed that it was much smaller than I anticipated, and the lady advised it's the length of the person rolling the dough that determines the size, it's still the same amount of dough. My husband and I really thought that was hilarious and just kind of brushed it off. We came back a second time, and the same scenario happened. We were also told them it was due to the length of the persons arms, same amount of dough..... I won't be coming to this location for pizza :/ sucks because I live close but the staff is constantly changing and the quality keeps changing as well.
google avatar

Yelp
A little disappointed we've been there several times over the years and it's always been great Today the pizza was burned and the brussel sprouts were undercooked but Service was good as usual We will definitely try it again

Yelp
Karl, the kitchen manager is the best! He runs a tight ship. The last time I had beer this good, it was in Nüremberg.
google avatar

Rikki T.

Yelp
We enjoyed this place for dinner last night! There was a brief wait when we got here (not because of tables but because it appears they were understaffed). We were seated and since it was our first time we were happy with the time it took our waitress to come take our orders. Once the order was taken everything came out promptly. The food was delicious!!! We really wish we had more than 2 napkins for our party of 3, but couldn't ask as the waitress never came back to check on us. Overall great food but don't expect great service. I would come back and ask for everything at one time, and even 2 drinks to avoid needing something during meal time. Or perhaps there needs to be more servers. My daughter likes to point out the dirtiness and weird things and she made sure to point out the dirty walls with Cobwebs, the ceiling missing tiles, and the dirtiness/crumbs on the seat of the booth that we were seated at.

Yelp
I love their lunch specials! The service is good and the ambiance is fun! Great place to grab a pizza and beer before a show!
google avatar

Yelp
Second home? Where we go when we don't want to cook? A good place to hang with friends? YES YES YES!! What I really love about Urbn is the staff. They are just the best people and it really shows. We likely would come here even if the food sucks which it doesn't- just to hang. Speaking of food if you haven't tried the mashed potato pie you really must. It is a strange combination that just works. Our other favorite is the barbecue chicken. Yum. Two other solid go twos include their wings and the Urbn salad. Great selection of beer on tap rounds off my favorite local eatery and watering hole. Chances are I'll see you there soon!
google avatar

About T.

Yelp
Please avoid this place. I don't know if it's under new ownership or what, you sit yourself and there's a sign in the front register that says to go to the bar to order. No one checked on us, the staff was busy looking at social media to see me walking up. For a wine and beer place they sure lack options. No hard ciders, no riesling, no moscato or even gewurztraminer. ‍ Pizza was mediocre at best and definitely not worth the $40+ tab for a pizza and salad. I'm hoping it wasn't the pizza but some of the people in my party ended up with stomach cramping up a couple of hours later. Oh and the best part was the flies Definitely won't be back ‍

Yelp
Sorry to hear they're shutting down soon. We liked the thincrust pies and beer selection. The decor is a bit basic (broken pallets) and maybe too hipster in vibe to make it in El Cajon, but North Park should continue to do well. Ordered and paid ahead at the bar, but helpful servers did check regularly to see if we needed anything. East end of San Diego still needs a place like this, so maybe someone else can pull off pizza and brews for the next decade. Thanks for the food and memories

Yelp
I love pizza and this restaurant was across the street from my hotel so I had to make a visit. I ordered my pizza online and it was ready shortly after I arrived. The pizza is reasonable priced. The customer service was good. I believe they make the pizza in a brick oven. My medium size pepperoni sausage pizza was good, but the crust was a little burnt. The crust is thin. The restaurant is a cool spot that has a brewery attached. The restaurant is pretty big and has a lot of seating, which is great for large groups. The restaurant has an outside seating area as well.
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
Solid place to grab some thin crust pie. Used to go to the north park location, so I'm glad they opened one closer to home. I recommend the mashed potato pizza. It's different but delicious. I also like that you can order split toppings
google avatar

Maribel C.

Yelp
My favorite pizza has mashed potatoes in it. Who knew. It's delicious. The eggplant and the pollpette pizzas are also the best. Great salads also. Love this place.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Poor service they were understaffed and said they were closing that location. They had signs up saying to order at the bar because there was no wait staff.
google avatar

Ria S.

Yelp
Still the best place to grab lunch if your are on jury duty at the El Cajon courthouse. Now that lunch breaks are 1.5 hours, what better way to serve your fellow citizens than chill out with a beer and some pizza during your down time?
google avatar

Willow J.

Yelp
Went here with my great aunt and uncle for dinner (I traveled up here for my graduation and this was very close to my hotel). The service was just awful. We were seated at a booth and had multiple waitresses make eye contact with us without even taking our drink order. There were also two girls in the kitchen giggling with the cooks and not coming out at all but I was able to see them through that glass by the kitchen. There were tables served before us even though these girls were the ones that sat us, they were fully aware that we were there. We had our menus down and everything trying to flag them over. I did not get to try their food, we left after 15 minutes of waiting for someone to just take a drink order. I'm really disappointed with the service :(

Melissa S.

Yelp
The eggplant parm pizza is my favorite!!! We live an hour away and were in El Cajon because my husband had a custody mediation (ugh) but got to have my favorite pizza (yay!) Caesar salad was just alright, croutons were very hard.
google avatar

Chanel Y.

Yelp
Excellent service, cannot say that enough. Knowledgeable staff. Good food. Fun atmosphere. They even let us try a drink! And their large pizza is no joke- it's LARGE
google avatar

Daani B.

Yelp
The service was AMAZING! I asked them to make a specific pizza, a flavor that my husband and I liked a lot, and they promptly answered our request. The girl who attended us was very friendly, helpful and answered all requests very quickly. We loved the experience.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
The Pesto Pizza is awesome and light. Plenty to share for two people! Super tasty and nice open area to look outside during the day!
google avatar

L. D.

Yelp
Had a small pepperoni pizza. I liked it A LOT. It was a little messy looking BUT it tasted better than it looked! The crust was just crispy enough and the red sauce was tasty. I would definitely go to URBN again.
google avatar

Lesa G.

Yelp
The atmosphere in this restaurant is the only decent thing. The sad pizza lacked flavor, lacked toppings and the dough was made out of a small piece of cardboard. We also ordered wings which had decent flavor but were soggy. The meal combined with 4 beverages totaled $100! It's not the price but the poor quality of food added to insult so we will never be back. There are way better pizza joints in the area with more reasonable prices and fresh ingredients.
google avatar

Kristin D.

Yelp
This place is across the street from our house, it's OK. Incredibly expensive for mediocre food. We have had dishes we have been happy with, and some not so much. Portions are big which is good! They have excellent options for seating both inside and outside. Service is just bare minimum - staff is not very attentive to refills or checking in if you need things. Overall, the ambiance is good - restaurant is clean. We don't frequent here anymore, but we would go back if we wanted something close to home.
google avatar

Nina S.

Yelp
I've been here twice since it's a cool little place in El Cajon. Consistently lively with a fun atmosphere. Ordered: Brussel sprouts: decent, not bitter, warm urbn salad: I like their variety in salads, one for each type of person, so I prefer this one with walnuts and gorgonzola mashed potato pie: was told this was the pie to buy, personally not my favorite, was feeling heavy without another contrasting flavor/texture BBQ chicken: again, decent, what you would expect Overall I think this restaurant executes its dishes in a timely fashion, nothing too burned or soggy etc. Feels like a solid choice if you're dining in, in the El Cajon area.

Shannon F.

Yelp
After such great reviews, we were a little disappointed in URBN. Our pizza dough was basically limp, for lack of a better word, and the pizza was barely at room temperature when served. The cheese was not even melted. They seemed to be understaffed with only one server, who actually did a good job, and the pizza is served on baking sheets, and all three baking sheets were cold. The edges of the dough were crisp and tasty, however I can't say that it was delicious enough to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Going to dial down URBN to 3 stars based on the service we received tonight from our server Keith. Dinner started out well -- Keith was attentive at first. Friendly guy. Took our app and drink orders, then an order for our two pizzas. After that, Keith pretty much disappeared. Didn't ask us if we wanted another round of drinks, didn't check to see if we were happy with our food, didn't ask us if we wanted dessert -- I had to flag him down to get a refill of my son's soda. Keith also didn't seem too concerned when our clam pizza with mushrooms was delivered with NO mushrooms. Funny enough, we were charged for olives, which we didn't order. Ultimately, after waiting around for a while, I had to go get my bill and a box for our leftovers from the hostess. Our food was as good as ever -- great meatballs, COAL-FIRED (!!) clam pizza and BBQ chicken pizza. And my draft Alpine Duet was perfect. But the service lacked. I noticed that the door is now open between URBN and the Creative Creature brewery next door and you're able to order URBN food and have it served over there. I think we'll give that a try next time. Note to management: PLEASE recover the booth seats -- they're really gross.

Yelp
food is so good and so ate the drinks definitely one of my favorite places to go margarita pizza is my favorite
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant floor is a mess. Garlic bread is a joke. Spaghetti sauce from a can, not Italian AT ALL. Service is okay. Definitely not coming back to that restaurant. I have to say, Chicken wings are very good.
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
Quirky little spot. We actually ordered inside and then sat in the little brewery next door. They did bring it over to us, which was nice. They were having family night - kids could make their own pizza. (I tried to get them to let me do it too!) The mashed potato pizza was rocking. All of us wrinkled our nose when reading it on menu, but after recommendation from server - we tried it - and liked it. I appreciate that you can do half pizzas to try two different options. The meatball appetizer was really good too!
google avatar

Abi D.

Yelp
By far the best pizza I have had in a looooooong time. Thin crust, delicious quality toppings. Highly recommend the Gouda chicken Alfredo. My tummy hasn't been this happy in a while. I've been in San Diego for 6 weeks, and this is the best food I've had so far. Good beers, some from the tap room next door. Also amazing.
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
The pizzas here are humongous! They our ideal for large get together's and parties. A large will feed several people. Service was great, you can really taste the quality of their ingredients! They have a good variety available, you can create your own or choose one of their menu items. Dine in or call your order in for pick up which worked out extremely well and seamlessly. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Went prior to a concert... Food was OK a little pricey and service was good.. Good place to eat before hitting the Magnolia.
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
Randy the manager stated that this location closes at 8pm 3 nights a week.. Google says different. Don't go here.. they are full of s**t. I called in for an order, when I got there all of of sudden their card machine "didn't work"... hahah.. EMPLOYEES SKIMMING CASH from the company. LMFAOOOOO. Called in the order, went 20 min later, then they said we are only taking cash and we'll have your pizza done in 10.. then... here goes Randy.."just give me 20 bucks for the pizza" Wonder if that 20 bucks was accounted for...hmmm.

Yelp
Strong 4 stars. We went last Saturday for the first time after hiking to "Potato Chip" rock and figured we would try the mashed potato pizza that some family members who live in El Cajon raves about. I was skeptical, but the pizza was phenomenal. We also got a sausage and peppers pizza that was just ok. We got a salad to share that was pretty large, tasty, and refreshing. They leave water for the table in a cool glass container. We ordered a couple of beers and there is a good variety to choose from in the $6-8 range. Parking was easy to find though we did go early and I am sure this place can get busier later in the day. I really liked the minimalist industrial decor and there are some TVs positioned on the walls. The young lady who was our waitress was attentive and friendly. I would definitely be interested in returning when I am in the El Cajon area.

salih m.

Yelp
I come here strictly for the Margherita pizza! Crust is crispy, has the perfect amount of sauce. Very thin and delicious. I can eat a whole pizza to myself. The place is very simple inside. Great for large groups or parties. Wings are pretty good, ask for extra well done. Haven't tried anything else. If you love beer they have a lot of options. But 2 thumbs up for the Margherita pizza!

Yelp
After sitting there for 20 minutes we still didn't have drinks. Several other patrons didn't even have menus and left. We left too and told folks on the way out that it wasn't worth it.
