We celebrated Christmas 2022 in Los Angeles by attending a movie (Avatar: The Way of Water 3D) and booking a dinner reservation at the Valley Inn Restaurant and Bar. It was the first time in many years that my family and I chose to dine out on a Holiday instead of cooking at home. Although I enjoy cooking and baking, going out or eating out on major holidays isn't my favorite because of previous bad experiences. My gourmet brother-in-law convinced me otherwise so we both could relax and take a break from cooking at home after seeing a movie during our vacation.
Our Christmas dinner at the Valley Inn Restaurant and Bar was a surprise because my BIL didn't tell us where he made reservations. He only mentioned that we were going to a neighborhood traditional American restaurant and that wearing business casual attire would be appropriate. As we drove down Ventura Boulevard and turned onto Sherman Oaks Avenue, I felt a déjà-vu moment when I saw Valley Inn's red entrance awning. When we entered the restaurant, I spotted a vintage sepia photograph of actress Jane Seymour from her movie "Somewhere in Time" and noted the early 1900's décor and immediately remembered that I had eaten at this restaurant two decades ago. I am pleased that my BIL considers this restaurant and bar one of his local haunts, and he remembered that the rest of the family enjoyed our last visit.
This time, because we arrived about a half hour before our reservation, we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks at the bar. At the bar, two longtime and friendly bartenders made us feel comfortable with perfectly made martinis and generous pours of draught beers. Many other groups came into the bar to wait for their reservation time as the host would go into the bar to escort each group out when the dining room opened.
The Christmas menu featured traditional American classic soups, salads, and entrées. My relatives ordered the Braised Lamb Shank ($42), Chicken Milanese ($35), and Prime Rib of Beef ($55). My husband and I shared The Wedge salad ($15) and ordered the Prime Rib of Beef ($55) and Roast Duckling ($48). We all enjoyed our salads and entrées for the flavors, textures, proper preparation, and plating.
FOOD:
- Prime Rib of Beef: The composed plate of English cut beef rib roast included mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables (green beans, carrots, and parsnips), au jus, and creamy horseradish. I don't usually eat a lot of beef, but for the Christmas Holiday, this entrée caught my eye. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the portion size was right without pushing me into a food coma. $55
- Roast Duckling: My husband chose the roast duckling entrée, which was topped with a dark cherry sauce and served with saffron rice and roasted vegetables. He enjoyed the crisp roasted duck skin and its juicy, lean and succulent duck meat. The sweet, tart, and vibrant dark cherry sauce helped to tame the decadent duck taste. $48
We were all comfortably full from dinner and ready to call it a night when our server enticed us with the dessert menu. My BIL suggested we get their Carrot Cake ($12) to share since the server mentioned its moist, tender crumb, and not overly dense. The server also suggested the Home Made Seven Layer Honey Cake ($12), which he described as incredibly delicious and not cloyingly sweet. Haha... we joked to say, "bet you say that to all of your customers," but I broke down to order the Seven Layer Honey Cake to share with my family. The carrot cake was delicious, as our server mentioned, and the cream cheese frosting gave the carrot cake a bit of a creamy sweet tanginess. The Seven Layer Honey Cake was also fantastic. It reminded me of Russian Medovik or Marlenka, as its honey flavor was evident, but there seemed to be a tanginess from either sour cream or cream cheese within the frosting. We were happy to share our desserts because we were already so satiated by our dinners.
Our server, sorry, I forgot his name, was impressive with his friendly, attentive yet professional service. Even as the dining room filled and his work coverage became more demanding of his attention, his impeccable attentiveness and smile never left. He was consistently attentive towards everyone in his area and made sure that everyone's dining experience was pleasurable on this crowded Holiday night.
We enjoyed our dinner experience and look forward to returning for more.
