How Filipino Adobo Became a Southeast Alaska Staple | Eater

"A cozy, old-school Juneau diner a short distance from the Mendenhall Glacier that locals praise for its rich, regional-style adobo. Plates arrive in almond-shaped gratin dishes with a glossy, molasses-dark sauce studded with whole spices (coriander, clove) and a gravy-like thickness that leans sweet rather than tart; chicken and pork versions are commonly ordered. The squat red building, pleather booths, thick-walled coffee mugs, and a wooden flounder under the rafters give it a homey, intergenerational feel, and elders and longtime residents regularly cite its adobo as emblematic of the local Filipino–Alaskan food tradition." - Jennifer Fergesen

The 14 Best Restaurants in Juneau, Alaska | Eater

"This is a cozy, affordable Filipino-influenced diner with lots of regulars in the Mendenhall Valley where it’s very hard to leave without being full. Many of the city’s culinary workers, including Rachel Carrillo Barril, chef at In Bocca al Lupo, got their start here. Among the menu favorites you’ll find: the loco moco, bacon fried rice and the “garbage plate” scramble, which has a robust fan club." - Julia O'Malley

Google
Great traditional diner food. This place looks like it’s been here for ages; but that means they’ve perfected the food! Quick and friendly service will bring you excellent diner breakfast fare. Don’t miss the home made cinnamon roll!

Google
It was my first time there and I will be back. I had the Mongolian beef and it was delicious. Some fried rice would’ve been better for me, but I guess that’s a personal preference. The people are absolutely outstanding. Very friendly talkative. I will be back to try something else on their menu.

Google
Food was very basic/classic American diner style. They messed up 3/3 of our orders. Very expensive for what you get too.

Google
We’ve eaten here two nights in a row. We are from Alabama and this little place is beside our hotel so it’s convenient, BUT the food has been incredible!! It’s just a quaint, peaceful place with incredible food.

Google
We were in Juneau on a cruise and my friend searched for a place for lunch and we found the Valley. Definitely worth the drive. Nice place for lunch with large portions. The club sandwich was tasty. My friend had the teriyaki chicken.

Google
I would consider this place a type of dive restaurant, and by no means is that a bad thing. The food was fantastic and the service was great. The server was chatting with a couple of locals, and they all had me laughing and smiling. Good people, good food. What more do you need.

Google
I’m shocked that this place has as many stars as it does. It has me wondering if all the reviews are written by friends and family versus actual customers. The food was expensive, tasted like day two cafeteria food that had been sitting out, and the service was poor. We ordered two of the shrimp omlette which were plasticky and lacked flavor. There was no effort to add seasoning or even whisk the eggs so it was blended) and the shrimp they used was definitely not what they were advertising. These were the smallest shrimp I’ve ever seen; they were no bigger than a fingernail and seemed like they could have been dehydrated or ordered in a can. They weren’t even incorporated into the egg, just lazily thrown in plastic-like shell of egg and like the cheese was lazily sprinkled around. We also ordered chocolate chip pancakes and strawberry and cream pancakes… you can’t mess this up, right? WRONG. They brought out two plain pancakes then took them back, put some chocolate chips on top on one and legit SPREAD STRAWBERRY JAM (like Smuckers) and put whipped cream on top. We also got a clam chowder that they said was “homemade,” but tasted like bacon chowder out of a can. No clams. Thick cream. Just no. We also had a basic egg, toast, and bacon breakfast which was whatever. No flavor or quality to anything. The total meal cost $77 which would have been fine if we weren’t paying for trash. All of this could have been made at home far better and for far less. We went to Deckhand Dave’s for dinner and it was less than this and a million times more amazing! On top of it, this place seemed outdated and dungey. I wish I followed my gut reaction to leave upon arrival and review of the menu, but I thought “Hey! Maybe this is a cool local joint.” It just felt like a scam. I would give this 0 stars if I could.

Google
Delicious Filipino home cooking in a cozy atmosphere, worth a detour off the beaten path! I read about Valley Restaurant in an Eater article on Filipino/Tlingit cooking that said this is the best place to try the Alaskan style of home-cooked chicken adobo. Let me tell you I was not disappointed! It was a chilly, rainy day and the meal began with a super comforting arroz caldo that felt like a warm hug. This was followed by our order of lumpia that were perfectly crispy and not greasy. Then came the main event: the chicken adobo and fried rice. The chicken has to be some of the best I have ever eaten. Cooked on the bone and bathed in tangy broth, It could not have been more tender and juicy. I went for the upgrade to the fried rice with the meal and it was also excellent. My partner ordered the Chinese noodles without meat. It was a steamy bowl of tasty broth, noodles, and bok choy. Another perfect choice for a chilly day! The restaurant itself is more or less the sort of roadside diner I grew up with. Booth seating and a big breakfast menu. A stuffed bear greets you at the door. This is a true locals joint and everyone is friendly. The chef/owner came out and talked to everybody. She beamed with the deserved pride of bringing such pleasure to her friends and patrons. All in all Valley Restaurant is well worth the detour off you're passing through Juneau and heading out for a hike at Mendenhall Glacier. If I find my way back to Juneau, I will make it my goal to come back to Valley Restaurant.

Yelp
Such a cute little, hometown diner experience! Staff is extremely welcoming and attentive. Food comes out super fast and delicious! Breakfast time is my favorite. Best place to get really flavorful fried rice in town!

Yelp
Honestly, the best thing about this place is the amazing staff. Food is delcious (breakfast or filipino favorites) , prices are reasonable, and it just feels cozy and nostalgic inside.

James C.

Yelp
I went for dinner. Had the double cheeseburger with fries. Was really good actually . Usual price for Juneau and the service was good. The restaurant was not that clean, but the burger was cooked great, tasted great, fresh ingredients. Fries were hot. A great filling meal . Yum

Wendy T.

Yelp
Poor service, terrible food, and the price far too high for the poor quality of food.

Yelp
We loved it. Best breakfast in Juneau! We didn't try the Loco Moco, but we will next time!
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Came here once a few years ago. Dirty, booths had tips in them, floor was chipped up like it was falling to pieces. Kultura de Isla next to Valley is much better! Hands down!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast!!! The Filipino breakfast is wonderful. Eggs were fluffy, sausage was delicious and food was cooked perfect. It was quick and the service was great.

Amanda Kay S.

Yelp
So good! We were staying near by, and came here for breakfast twice. The pancakes were wonderful, the veggie omelette was delicious, and the service was wonderful!

Gabriel V.

Yelp
The food has been mediocre at it's best, but most recently is has been really, really disappointing. The price is what you would expect in Juneau. I feel embarrassed of the quality of food and service. I would not recommend, save yourself some money and tears.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick and good diner food. We always get a burger or lumpia to go. The decor is a bit dated but you go there for a quick bite to fill your belly. We keep going back after all these years.
google avatar

Yelp
Really simple little diner style restaurant. I stopped in for breakfast because it was next door to my hotel. The staff was super friendly, very attentive and kind. I had the 2-egg breakfast, comes with hash browns, toast and coffee for $10.95. Very simple and good! Definitely recommend if you're looking for simple, relaxing & kind service

Yelp
Sometimes good food at a good price in a laid back diner is what you need. This place hits that spot!! The menu is awesome with a little bit of everything. From typical diner food of burgers and fries, to seafood and even Chinese!! I've had the blackened Halibut before and it was fantastic!! This time though I was hankering for se Chinese and didn't wanna go to Canton for overpriced food. So we came here instead and I'm so glad we did!! WAAAYYY better food for a MUCH lower price. Plus every entrée comes with choice of soup or salad, garlic bread and a cup of steamed veggies. So basically a TON of food!! I got the sweet and sour chicken and upgraded to fried rice. Pro tip, definitely get the fried rice. So worth the extra $3. The fried rice is AMAZING. Eggs, onions, all the goodies and it's actually fried and flavorful. The sweet and sour chicken was super good too. Deep fried to a golden brown but not like the normal deep fried pieces of chicken you see at run of the mill spots. Nope these guys use a delicious breading that has some flavor to it. The sweet and sour sauce is yellow not the normal red. It reminded me of the duck sauce at the chinese places back in the Midwest. It was super tasty though and they sprinkled the chicken with roasted sesame seeds. Yum!! I also ordered some lumpia, and WOW were they spot on!! You can tell they make it fresh with all sorts of yummy veggies in there. My wife had mongolian beef. It was perfect and had a nice amount of sautéed onions and green onions. The sauce was awesome mixed into the yummy fried rice!! All and all The Valley restaurant is definitely one of my favorite spots to eat in Juneau.

Margaret O.

Yelp
We had a late breakfast here. We got a table quick and the service the really good. Breakfast was tasty and started our day nicely!

Yelp
Prices are great, and there ends the reason to go there. It is long over due for a remodel, bench cushion seats are totally warm out. If you like greasy spoons this maybe the place for you

Priscilla S.

Yelp
The food is usually good, but the service is hit or miss (usually miss) unless the server(s) like you. Breakfast is good and the coffee could be stronger.
google avatar

Jay T.

Yelp
What a great find. Just driving by and turned around to find an amazing place. All of the food that came out looked fantastic. My food was fresh and very flavorful. The clam chowder that came with my lunch was some of the best I have ever eaten. The general chicken was a large portion with great flavor. I was I had found this place earlier in my trip as I would have been back several times. Stop by if you are in the area.
google avatar

Gwendolyn C.

Yelp
Still very poor service. Do not even consider placing a complaint of any sort. My complaint was that I ordered a Taco Omelet and when I received my order, there was barely any omelet filler. It was mostly all egg and even that was barely one egg. When complaining, Linda (part owner) yelled at me and tried claiming that was how they've always made their omelets. Which I know was not true. She refused to send it back and proceeded to yell at me more. Then yells that if I don't like their food then go somewhere else. Which I have done since. Donna's has much better service, better coffee and better food. Even one of the waitresses had left Valley restaurant and has since been working at Donna's. In fact, Linda has been the reason many other regulars have quit going there.
google avatar

JoLynn B.

Yelp
No matter what time of day you go the food is consistently great. Today I had an omelet, someone had chicken fried steak, my husband had pancakes eggs and hash browns, someone else had a chicken wrap. Everyone enjoyed their food.
google avatar

Stefan S.

Yelp
Reading the reviews shows the restaurant changed hands about a year ago. Some reviews showed they had a few rough edges at the beginning. We had a great experience eating here. The wait staff was very friendly and efficient. They kept our coffees filled and quickly got a few things we asked for after our food arrived in short order. My wife got the Loco Moco and I got the hamburger patty and eggs with hashbrowns. Both were good and easily satisfied our hunger. We will definitely come again when we are in the area!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
You HAVE to try the bacon fried rice. It is amazing! This is a good family restaurant. I never thought to put bacon in fried rice, I've had plenty of pork fried rice, but it is so savory and perfect. It's a good size portion that can be shared with another person or take home the extras. The appetizers can go well with it if you're sharing. Breakfast is delicious here, my mom loves the French toast here. You can eat all three meals of the day here. Dine in is currently available, along with takeout and looks like they are advertising delivery to the valley.
google avatar

Krista M.

Yelp
Meh. I've definitely experienced better. We were staying at a nearby hotel and the restaurant wasn't open so we did a quick Yelp search and ventured over to the Valley Restaurant. I think "classic diner" is perhaps a bit generous, more like "greasy spoon." I was not impressed with the service and I was definitely not impressed with the coffee. I thought the food was mediocre at best. You definitely get what you pay for - that's a plus, it's pretty inexpensive. I wouldn't eat here again as I am turned off from both the service and the lackluster food. Check it out for yourself, I hope you have a better experience!

Yelp
I heard Valley Restaurant had down-home Philippino food. I was told by the locals that live in the valley to try it. It's a family-owned restaurant that has been around for a long time. I was told to try the bacon-fried rice. So I ordered the bacon-fried rice. I was warned that they give you a lot of food. I ask for less rice and extra white and green onions. I was very pleased with the taste of my rice. It was very flavorful and they do not skimp on the bacon. As I sat waiting for my order I had the opportunity to see what other customers were eating. I can not wait to try a few things on their menu. I was told by the locals in Juneau Alaska to add some shrimp. I went to the grocery store in town and purchase some fresh Alaskan shrimp. It looks delicious and it is banging. I added a little heat and some chili sesame oil. I plan to eat with a sunny side egg on top. If you make it to Juneau Alaska please stop into Valley Restaurant for authentic Philipino food. To my yelpers let's continue to ear our way throughout the world. #Foodie4life.

Yelp
Their Loco Moco with a side of jalapeños Best breakfast I had in Juneau this trip..the steak breakfast and bacon fried rice were amazing too

Heather H.

Yelp
Portions are big and definitely a casual vibe. Food is hit or miss. Somedays it is great and others not so much. Service is usually pretty good but the restaurant needs a deep cleaning for sure

Destiny B.

Yelp
Well I'm bummed to say that today will be the last time I give valley restaurant my business. I've loved going here for years but today my co worker and I called in a to go order and I dared to ask a question about wether or not there was jalapeños in my order and I was told by the owner herself that she was " too busy to answer questions, do you want to place an order or not" my coworker then call to place her order for a blt and was trying to let her know she just didn't want Mayo on the BLT and the owners response was annoyed and she kept repeating that she was too busy and basically rushing her order, the owner then decided to just hang up on her. We went in to pick up our orders to find that she never even placed the Blt order and accused my coworker of hanging up on her. I explained my frustration on the lack of quality customer service I received and how terrible we were treated as paying customers but the owner didn't care and proceeded to say that she doesn't care and that we should leave and how she doesn't care to lose our business. I am greatly disappointed and as someone who works in customer service daily and understands how important it is for businesses in this town to strive I would advise the owner to practice better customer service skills as for that alone can greatly effect her business and livelihood.

Yelp
This is a very local experience type of breakfast place. Food was good, eggs were a little to over easy and the sausage had a weird taste. The bacon was AMAZING with a smoky taste. Coffee was morning roast, I prefer dark.

Travis O.

Yelp
Great food and service but weak coffee. They need to fix that. Fried rice loco moco was ok but philipino breakfast with the sausage is tha bomb. A Hawaiian from Hawaii.
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
Good place for the family! Two trips here and have been satisfied both times. Good food reasonably priced and friendly service.
google avatar

Jamil M.

Yelp
Don't expect fine dinning here. It is certainly your typical dinner food i.e. Hamburgers, cold cut sandwiches and breakfast food. The prices are reasonable, but the service is so slow. At times I could locate my waitress and the establishment at the time only had 6 ppl in it. Great for after the club lets out and your options are limited.
google avatar

Hailey B.

Yelp
Hit or miss, but worth the gamble. I've never eaten anything but the breakfasts, and I LOVE the garbage plates. Its an "everything" type scramble with jahalapinos and hash browns. Sometime they come out and are served burnt, so I've learned to check my to go box before I leave the parking lot. The MocoLoco is a tragedy! The most disgusting MocoLoco I have ever eaten, the beef Patty is bland and extremely dry, much like the rice. The brown gravy is most likely from a jar or packet - the burnt grill scrappings are most likely added to it for "flavor". Putting gravy on dry hockey pucks and rice does not make it better or eddible. Stick to the garbage plate or one of the other simple breakfast items like Panckakes. 2 garbage plates and a short stack will run you a little over 30$. So this place is a little pricy but the portions are fair.
google avatar

Chuck M.

Yelp
The garbage plate was great for breakfast. My wife had the chicken fried steak and she said it was really good. The staff was friendly and the food came very quickly. Everything was prepared exactly as ordered and the best part is the coffee was free with the meal. I tried the other places nearby for breakfast, this place is hands down the best, especially when it comes to the price
google avatar

Estrella S.

Yelp
Had the bacon cheese burger. Requested cheddar instead of american. We took the food to go. It was a huge burger. Definitely fulfilling. Asked for ranch on the side for my fries. Tasted a little tart. Had my sister taste it and she just told me it tasted like the ones from a salad bar. Aside from that, food was good and hearty. Apparently they are known for their loco moco. I should have tried it. Next time.
google avatar

Mindy K.

Yelp
Classic diner breakfast food, ordered two eggs, two slices of bacon, and two pancakes with chocolate chips. The chocolate chip upgrade was a $2 charge but definitely worth it, not unlike that ridiculously delicious guac up charge at Chipotle. The food was hot and yummy. Would definitely go back the next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Armando A.

Yelp
Asked at the front desk and they recommended this place. From the outside perspective I felt it was a bit out dated. When I walked in I confirmed that it was very outdated. Old ripped furniture, floors are worn out , it almost looks dirty. I want sure if I wanted to stay but I didn't want to drive around so I ordered the blackened halibut with Cesar salad and garlic bread. To my surprise the fish was delicious , the salad and bread were good too but the fish was great. If they updated the furniture and made it look more appealing I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Cyndi J.

Yelp
I love this place! I had breakfast here during my interview trip. Linda was so kind to me. I'm a picky eater (no eggs, no cheese), and she gave me biscuits and gravy, plus sausage and hashbrowns. She talked a bit about how she loves Juneau. Fast forward three months. I went back this morning. She remembered me! The food here is comforting and delicious, and the service is even better! We will definitely make this our go-to breakfast spot!
google avatar

Fredrick N.

Yelp
My club sandwich was excellent. My wife's fred he dip was rock hRd. When we sent it back he French dip was good but the servers were visually and verbally upset with us. No more service after that.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Excellent discovery while returning from a backwoods adventure in the Chilkoot area. halibut sandwich was great and the staff are hard working people that want to please. Would recommend to the family for any time of day.
google avatar

Leanne W.

Yelp
Today I ordered French Dip, absolutely delicious, my son ordered chocolate chip pancakes, also delicious. Definitely returning for more yummy food. Great customer service
google avatar

Kimberly B.

Yelp
We walked in on a Saturday night before 9 but were told they were closed. However, there were other people eating dinner and being served. They either need to update their business hours or at least lock the entrance door.
google avatar

Helios P.

Yelp
The Valley Restaurnt has changed hands once again. The new owners/cooks are not very impressive. I went there over the weekend and my eggs had bits of shells in them, my hashbrowns were burnt to a crisp on one side and almost raw on the other. The only good part was the biscuits and gravy...and the gravy was lacking in flavor. I miss the old owners, and sadly I probably won't be coming here again for quite awhile.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
I was told I could get chicken adobo at Valley Restaurant, and since it just didn't seem right to visit Juneau three times in two weeks without having any chicken adobo, and my plane wasn't leaving quite yet, I trudged there through the rain (this took about the same length of time as walking from a D gate to an A gate in Seatac, though it was rather damper) and took a seat. This is the sort of place where old people eat lunch, under the eye of a TV news anchor suspended near the ceiling, and the small ponytailed waitperson makes only the most perfunctory request for confirmation before she starts pouring into your mug from the coffeepot that never leaves her hand. None of this discouraged me; nor did the small drift of sad, browning iceberg scraps the ponytailed person set before me when I chose salad instead of soup. But the adobo itself (presented in unnerving quantity: three entire chicken thighs, with a veritable mountain of rice) turned out to be all too similar to the country music they put on when the news report was over, a syrupy concoction of sugar and vinegar without the slightest complexity or depth. Ah, well. As much as can be expected within an easy stroll of the airport.

Lindsey D.

Yelp
So I went here for the first time tonight. I ordered the Alwyns Burger and the menu said it had blue cheese and jalopenos on it. I asked the waitress if it came with the typical other burger toppings and before I could even finish my order she began to walk away and I had to yell to ask her to add bacon. Anyways of course the order comes back with all this extra stuff on it I didn't want (it wasn't on the menu and the waitress told me it didn't come with that stuff) so there was also no bacon. Here's the kicker y'all...I told this other lady that my order was wrong and she rolled her eyes at me!!!! I was super polite! And she rolled her eyes!! She snatched my Burger off the table and asked me what my order was. Literally I ordered exactly what the menu said on it and to add bacon. When it was brought back to me...it was still wrong.
google avatar

Tracy G.

Yelp
Okay have you ever heard of bacon fried rice, well neither had I and it is awesome. Great food, good prices with fast and friendly service.
google avatar

Kurt S.

Yelp
Great american diner good food, low cost, good service. I had the egg plate and the hash browns were awesome. Wife had eggs benedict
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
This is just a honest review. They are normally 5 stars across the board, but not this morning, they were mostly slow. Got our menu's fairly quick, but took awhile to get back to us. Took our order and I didn't get my hot chocolate and OJ until right before we finally got our breakfast. Then they messed up on 2 of our egg orders and completely messed up on one order of toast. Then to top it all off my hamburger steak was kind of like warm. We are hoping this isn't the regular with here, because we really enjoy eating here.
google avatar

Robyn C.

Yelp
They've got everything from lumpia to pasta to burgers! I had a BLT and fries that totally satisfied me after a long day on my feet. Super crispy thick bacon. Yummy diner food.
google avatar

Irene D.

Yelp
Love the Loco Moco!! Very friendly service. Lots of food served. The prices were great. The selection of food is American & Filipino. A plus us breakfast all the time.
google avatar

Yvonne B.

Yelp
Every time I come to Juneau I make a point to eat at the Valley Restaurant. I love the Loco Moco!
