The Best Breweries and Brewpubs in Bend, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Mark, Dana Henion, and John Van Deuzer peeled off from years at Boneyard Brewing to start their own brewery. They aim to offer one of each type of beer, with basic names like Van Henion Helles, lager, Kolsch, pilsner, India pale ale, double IPA, and a schwarzbier black lager. The brewery resembles an old west saloon with barrel chairs, antique glass globe lighting, flocked red or green wallpaper, cuckoo clocks, and ornately framed funky western portraits. Just outside, there’s plenty of seating. Van Henion scored big with the recent addition of the Tex-Mex food truck, Manzanita Grill, where Jade Sellers and Joaquin Ortiz serve a fusion of barbecue and Mexican flavors. Ortiz eschews refried beans for a mix of pinto and black beans with the taste of baked beans. For a burst of flavor, dip a jalapeño popper into a chorizo aioli with a hint of honey. All items are a tastebud bonanza, but the torta sandwich will make you stop to savor each bite of expertly combined meats, sandwich veggies, and jalapeño. This year brought the addition of Chonie’s Pizza, serving pies made with Italian pinsa bread and premium ingredients. (Note that minors are only allowed on the patio.)" - Barb Gonzalez

This place is awesome. Very chill and mellow. Great AC! The IPA is delicious. Love that they have full and short pints. The pizza food cart is 🤤, got the Rusty mule Detroit style. I do not regret this decision. Dog friendly outside.

Update 3/2025. Still awesome..... An excellent addition to the Bend beer scene. Several German beers that were crisp and refreshing, perhaps some of the best Germans I've had. A couple IPA's too. Pub setting that is adult only, and dog friendly. You walk in and get transformed into a simple, inviting German pub. Low lit and mild music playing in the background where you want to sit and talk over a beer. Service was great. Food truck out front that could be appetizers or a full meal. Prices are as expected and ample parking is available.

Great selection of brews from nonalcoholic beers and wine, to thc blends, to IPAs ales and pishners. The food trucks there are amazing Chonies pizza and Manzanita Grill both have awesome selections.

Honest opinion: I hated the beers but only got the iPas. Kind of dumb of move at a German themed bar. This place Is still out of this world! We saw many breweries in bend and the people are overall very nice. However this bartender younger guy early 20s was literally the nicest server we had in our entire week long trip. A true gentlemen and scholar if I must say! The decorations are awesome with German mugs on the wall and a awesome theme throughout the place.

Great German beers! Can’t comment on the IPAs as we didn’t have any. Food trucks were both really good. We went with the thick crust pizza which was great. A great spot to spend some time and have done beers.

Van Henion was a perfect place for me to visit. I'm a beer geek with lager and "crispy boy" styles being my present preference. 4 of their 6 brews were lagers and a kolsch. Great bar hangout chatting with some fellow travelers and the owners' son, who was working the bar. Cool, unique looking space inside. Stop in (especially iyou're not addicted to hazy IPAs), you won't regret it!

Great German-style brews and neat pub. Absolutely love that you can bring your dog inside, and having food truck options on site make this one of my favorite spots, particularly in winter. Keep it up, and hope to see some other German brews coming from you lot!
