A Hot D.C. Taqueria Unveils a Bigger Home — And More August Openings | Eater DC

"On Logan Circle, I visited the NYC-based ice cream chain’s sixth D.C. location, which opened with $1 scoops between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and a free tote for the first 100 customers; the shop is also serving a limited-edition sundae created with D.C. chef Johnny Sperow — Spero’s namesake sundae features two scoops of the Marionberry Cheesecake ice cream, Spero’s black cocoa caramel sauce, a caramelized chocolate crumble, and whipped cream." - Emily Venezky

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream in DC is the perfect spot to end the night on a sweet note. The shop stays open late, which makes it ideal after the bars and restaurants nearby. I loved their creative flavors (both dairy and vegan), and the limited-time sundaes are a fun surprise that keep me coming back to try something new. Even with a crowd, the line moved quickly and the atmosphere was welcoming. Great ice cream, great vibe, has a nice patio to watch the comings and goings of the city. The location is very cute as well. It’s my go-to nightcap spot in DC. 🍦

Google
Very friendly professional service. We had the following 3 scoops: Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Marionberry Cheesecake, and Mint Chip. All three premium scoops were very creamy and delicious. This Van Leeuwen location became our favorite ice cream shop during the 9 days we visited the D.C. area.

A Scoop of Joy at Van Leeuwen on 14th Street, DC! If you’re strolling down 14th Street NW and craving something sweet, the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream location is definitely worth a stop! There are a few Van Leeuwen shops sprinkled around the DC area, but this one stands out—literally. The colorful wall mural inside instantly caught my eye and made the space feel cheerful and artsy—perfect for an Instagram moment and an even better vibe for a treat! I was warmly welcomed by Trinity, a nice young lady with the best personality & energy. Now let’s talk about the ice cream: rich, creamy, and full of flavor, as you’d expect from Van Leeuwen. While their classics shine, I was hoping for more fruit-forward flavors on the menu—especially something refreshing like mango or raspberry. Fingers crossed those make an appearance during their seasonal rotations. I’ll definitely be back soon to explore what seasonal ice cream flavors they’re scooping next. Van Leeuwen is always a vibe, and this location is on my list for friendly service and that cool, creative atmosphere. Parking is limited. Pro tip: Visit during off-peak hours for the best service and photo ops!

If you're looking for a delicious and unique ice cream experience, Van Leeuwen on 14th St NW is the place to be! With an amazing selection of exotic flavors, like Dolce de Leche Brownie, Malted Cookie Dough Shake, and Lemon Poppyseed Muffin, every visit is a treat. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, offering samples of all the flavors before you make your choice. They even have prepackaged pints available in a freezer for a convenient take-home option. While it might not be the cheapest spot in town, the quality and taste make it absolutely worth it. Open every day from 12 noon to midnight (until 1 AM on Friday and Saturday), it’s the perfect late-night dessert stop. Marionberry Cheesecake in a waffle cone for the win. Highly recommend!

Google
I have been here twice and I love this place! The reason is not only do they have regular ice cream but they also have vegan and I do like vegan ice cream when I’ve had too much regular milk products. I was really happy when they had a free topping day and I got the vegan peanut butter ice cream along with salted caramel topping. It was so good! I would definitely recommend stopping here if you would like some ice cream.

Paul Y.

Google
Awesome ice cream. I had the sour cherry and peanut butter. Quite amazing and 2 scope is just nice. Also ordered a strawberry milkshake. Unfortunately, I find it a little too watery and prefer the thick type.

Bradley L.

Google
A great spot to grab a scoop. They let you have samples here which is always appreciated especially since they such unique flavors. I settled on mango sticky rice and Marionberry cheesecake. It was well worth the price and will be back next time I’m in Georgetown.

Google
Fun, flavorful and live. Our family came after dinner. It was busy but moving. The staff was nice and kept a smile. We sampled several choices and all were delicious. Being from out-of-town, we didn't know the lay of the land. I don't suggest driving to that location, trying to find a parking space was a nightmare. We never did! However, the icecream was worth the hassle. 👍🏽

Yelp
We learned about this place during the pandemic when they put out a limited time Mac n cheese flavor. We didn't get the chance to sample that and the girl in there this time didn't even know about it. So while visiting DC we checked it out and ended up going back a second time! Cool vibe and delicious flavors! Nothing so unique as Mac n cheese or pickle but good.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The flavors are really great and the metal spoons they use to give you samples offer a solid taste! THE SERVICE IS GREAT! After 6x samples they were still happy to help us out! THE AMBIANCE It's good - just a friendly ice cream place!

Yelp
Walked around the corner after having dinner with family and waited in a very long line for some of the best ice cream. Don't be discouraged, the line moves quickly. Ice cream is sooooo good and lots of flavors to choose from. Baby cousin got to try her first ice cream here and I think it set the standard high. 10/10!! Check them out :)
google avatar

Hawa Maya B.

Yelp
I went back! 10/10! Great service perusal. We tried a few of the new flavors and I stuck with my favorite. Honeycomb! It's the best!
google avatar

Mina T.

Yelp
Got my Sweet tooth fixed here . They have regular and vegan ice cream available for all ice cream lovers .
google avatar

Yelp
Cute spot near Logan circle with a wide variety of ice cream (including a few vegan options). The staff are friendly and you can taste a few flavors if you're having trouble deciding. I opted for the sour cherries & cream flavor and was not disappointed!
google avatar

Iris P.

Yelp
a classic chain that has soon spread across DC, I mainly come here for convenience. the flavors are very interesting and they're generous with samples, as well as pretty efficient despite long lines. that being said, $8 for a single scoop is just way too much and most of the flavors are sickly sweet.

Yelp
Writing this review to ensure others know about topping Tuesday! I went on a Tuesday and was surprised to learn it was topping Tuesday and could get a free topping. I went with the almond slivers. There weren't any signs we saw promoting this so we appreciated the person scooping our ice cream letting us know about this. There are also lots of vegan ice creams for those who don't eat dairy.

Yelp
Perfect evening pick me up after a long work day downtown in DC. There was a line when I arrived but it progressed very quickly. The staff allowed me to try numerous flavors before deciding on Ice Cream Cake with White Chocolate Raspberry Brownie. Super fresh and very creamy. This location has a few seats inside but plenty of room outdoors on the covered patio.

Yelp
Sometimes a gal just wants a scoop, and this place we'll, thy we're happy to oblige. I loved allllll the vegan options on flavors! It made me sad that I actually had dinner. Pro tip. Next time skip dinner and call this dinner!! You can get sample tastes. I had the black berry chocolate swirl, that was something I needed in my life!!! I didn't have tummy space for the waffle cone. Again, pro tip, get that!! The line looks long, but moves super quick. If you are looking for a place to meet with pals, gals, friends, family or a date, this place has you covered. Now let's talk quality. I have had ice cream all over the country from Vermont, Cape Cod, Dallas, Idaho to Washington and California. This quality qualifies as in the top five in the country: and quality isn't cheap. So. If you're gonna complain about the cost, go somewhere else. If you est strong quality ice cream that everyone can love... come here!!!

Yelp
Great spot for some dessert. I stopped in while visiting My Son from out of town and the ice cream is spot on. The young gentleman at the counter was very helpful and helping me select my Sunday. Besides the calories, I would definitely be back.

Yelp
vanleeuwenicecream fudge sundaes I don't love icecream but I LOVE their sundaes, and that says something --- cannot get enough
google avatar

Ari C.

Yelp
Yummy treat any time of day and reasonable prices ice cream bar! Would certainly go back!
google avatar

Chelsea A.

Yelp
Came here because my friend loves that they have vegan flavors. Closes at a decent time on Thursdays so we were able To go after dinner. Can't go wrong if you find a flavor you like
google avatar

Yelp
Fun and lively atmosphere ... and at a high price. At first I thought this place recently opened up given the extremely long line 20 feet out the door on a Saturday evening. But turns out 7 months into this business, people are still willing to wait for some pricey sweetness. At nearly eight bucks for a typical scoop size, I'm not sure if it's quite worth it despite some entertaining flavors and vegan options. We got some vegan strawberry shortcake- a bit more on the sour side and not so creamy as this treat should be. The coffee affogato was good but again not at the price point nor wait to get it. Once was good enough.

Yelp
Good ice cream with fun flavors and standard flavors. I tried the pecan praline and the cherry chip. One small is $7ish for 1 scoop and two scoops is $8ish. Clean location. Indoor and outdoor seating. Not a lot of chairs so they could all be taken
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
Yes, almost $8 for one scoop of ice cream is insane, but their flavors are tasty. I always get the mini sundae with one scoop of honeycomb ice cream with whipped cream, honey sliced almonds, and hot judge. It's unique, good, and full of texture!
google avatar

Tori C.

Yelp
I've never had Van Leeuwen even with the frozen products on grocery stores. I was so excited to try an official store and I wasn't disappointed! The honeycomb ice cream is divine, I'll definitely be buying the frozen pint in store. The staff was a bit disappointing but it was late and busier than I expected for a Thursday.
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
The ice cream is delicious. A bit over priced. It's not a regular ice cream place you can go to often. Also, I wanted water and you can only purchase water, which I was surprised by. The staff was quick and efficient with our order. J would come back again, but not often and only because of the prices.
google avatar

Nica F.

Yelp
Now, I'm a girl who LOVES a sweet treat so I feel very qualified to say that Van Leeuwen has some of the best ice cream you can get! The store is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing with great natural light. And this location specifically has the sweetest staff members! My personal recommendations: one scoop of Buttermilk Berry Cornbread OR Marion Berry Cheesecake and then a scoop of Honeycomb on top. The order is so crucial honestly because when the honeycomb scoop melts on top of the Buttermilk Berry Cornbread or Marion Berry Cheesecake!!!
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Really good honeycomb ice cream and shockingly good with their root beer to make a float! Would come back and try more flavors.
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
Yummm. Mango was delicious. Honey was also! I got two huge scoops and two different samples
google avatar

Laila I.

Yelp
OH MY GOD- this ice cream is so good- I got the Jasmin and passion fruit ice cream I'm literally obsessed I've never tasted anything like it - if you lime tropical flavors and tea go get it right now!! Also love the art on the wall so adorbs- and the girl serving me was so sweet I asked for like 7 samples ( ima a picky girl ok) and she was so sweet about it and gave me a huge scoop too!! Def recommend!!

Rw F.

Yelp
Ice cream was ok. I don't know if it was because I got a new barrel and the was bunch of oddly textured/flavored ice cream. It might be the flavor but it was just odd with those parts. I might have been to another location but I'm not sure. I might not be back.
google avatar

AJ P.

Yelp
Very solid ice cream and quick service. A bit pricey for one scoop, but many fun flavors to satisfy whatever you are feeling

Morgan M.

Yelp
Cute spot! Great ice cream! Little on the expensive side but what's not now n days. Worth a try!
google avatar

Gavin V.

Yelp
A group of us (15) walked in and Kishaywn made sure we were all taken care of! His fast and friendly service was phenomenal! The ice cream and atmosphere were amazing!
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
outdoor seating. friendly place. packed. splendiferous ingenious daily special flavours!!! Vegan options. Non-dairy options. Recommend the following flavours that we tried: earl grey tea, sour cherry (only if you like your ice ream very tart!), strawberry. BEST CHOICE......Sticky Rice with Mango (irresistible).

Krista F.

Yelp
OMG! The Honeycomb ice cream is soooo good! The Blue Jasmine Passionfruit Swirl is also very good!
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
They had the best selection of vegan flavors of all the other ice cream places down the street. Most had one or two and they had around six. Delicious.

Rychlo L.

Yelp
Very disappointing- barely better than grocery store ice cream and $9 for two small scoops. Ice creams are full of colorings and candy/cookie mix-ins, not creative or high quality at all. Feels very commercial and not artisan or small batch. Skip it.
