The Top Restaurants the Northern Catskills Near Hunter Mountain | Eater NY

"Many ski resorts have their own official restaurant, serving exhausted skiers bland food they are too tired to taste. Not Hunter. Executive chef Tim Lang is both a graduate of nearby Hyde Park’s Culinary Institute of America and a native of the north Catskills, and his menu reflects that background. There’s both the typical — burgers, pasta — as well as pan-roasted duck breast and brie and apple chicken. Many dishes can be prepared both vegetarian and gluten-free." - Robert Rubsam

Visited Van Winkles for Friday Burger Night. The beer was ice cold, and the burger was huge and perfectly medium rare as I ordered. Fries were tasty as well! Will definitely be back, thanks all!

Lera Kogan

Google
Great place! Especially if you are staying at the resort, it is perfect to dine in. We loved the quality of the burgers; the buns were toasted and big, and the meat had a fresh taste and no grease or fat. The fries are so fun! I haven’t seen any place to use that cut, and since the taste is the same as the standard fries, it makes it a pleasant experience. The Kaatskills is a nice salad, especially with add-on chicken; pizza and bruschetta are great for appetizers or a pizza dinner if you wish. After eating in a few places in the area, we came to the conclusion that it was better to eat at Van W than anywhere else, taste and value-wise.

Google
The staff was amazing ! The manager made my son’s birthday so special . Our waiter was very nice . The food was delicious. We did not have to wait long for our food . I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We were staying at the Hunter Mountain Resort and had a deeply disappointing experience at Van Winkles on December 26, 2024. The manager, Rachel, treated our family, including our 3-year-old daughter, in a rude and completely inappropriate manner, directly addressing our daughter in a way that made her cry and even throwing a plate onto the table, which could have caused harm. We also noticed discriminatory treatment toward us as Brazilian tourists, while American customers received noticeably better service. Despite apologies from the resort’s management, the manager’s behavior reflected a serious lack of professionalism that made it impossible for us to enjoy our meal. We do not recommend this restaurant until clear improvements are made in staff training and management.

Google
Terrible experience! We had a reservation and we are staying in the hotel. Arrived 15 minutes late and they cancelled our reservation and another family also with small kids within the 15 minute grace period. The tables were given away to people without reservation and the restaurant was half empty but the host refused to seat neither our family nor ours (both with little kids) because he was “holding the reservation for others”.

Google
A decent option for food if you are staying at Katskill Mountain Club. Happy hour from 4pm to 6pm. Full bar but food options are limited. Do bring a bug spray if you plan to dine out in the garden area.

Steve Richard

Google
This place is awesome. Everyone is so friendly and on top of their game, especially our server, Crosby. The bar was hopping so there's a good atmosphere. They have a lot of options on the menu with many of them being homemade. All the food was delicious. I definently recommend coming here for dinner.

Kirk Buchanan

Google
We have had good food here and we have eaten here many times. The menu is limited, but what is there is very good. Prices are reasonable for a ski lodge...most places gouge you...they get a premium, but not offensive. The quality almost justifies the price.

Yelp
We were greeted by Frances, who brought us to a nice quiet table with a view of the sparkly lights on the trees outside. She was also our server, and I believe was the only hostess and server working the entire restaurant. There were about five tables and we never felt rushed or forgotten. We ordered the special of the night, a citrus flank steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and the chili bread bowl. The chili was lukewarm warm but the right combo of spice and meat. Very yummy! While we waited for our food we enjoyed the paintings depicting the story of Rip Van Winkle. The food was good, the price was right (roughly $20 entrees) and Frances really was the icing on the cake for us!

Yelp
Great food, excellent service, Crosby and Juli took great care of us today and yesterday. The ambiance is family like and very cosy. We will definitely come back

Yelp
slow service, bad food for the price you are paying, bartender basically ignored me when the bar was empty and all i wanted was a glass of water.

Yelp
Came here to write a review about the terrible service my family had received from the Russian or German bartender the other night and it seems someone had already beaten me to the punch! I would steer clear of this place. The food is terrible and the bartender must just be trying to get herself fired. I've never been more insulted by anyone in my life. She literally put her finger in my husbands beer and refused to exchange it. She smelled terribly of cigarettes and all in all it was a disgraceful experience.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
My husband and I were honestly thinking of buying a timeshare here before eating at this restaurant. Mind you it's the ONLY option to eat at after skiing! The Russian bartender here is absolutely terrible! Her drinks are completely terrible! I had gotten a salad and asked for the dressing on the side just in case I didn't like it. Nothing to crazy literally all I asked for was the dressing on the side no additional options to the salad to changes just the dressing on the side. The salad was mediocre at best and $17 and then when the check comes it was an extra $4. Obviously, the $4 charge wasn't the issue for me it was the fact that I feel I was nickel and dimed for no reason. When I inquired on this charge the women said it was more work for her to put dressing on the side. I can't believe she said that! Literally who treats someone like that. Please people do yourself a favor and not only stay somewhere else but eat somewhere else!

Yelp
Highly recommended. The dining area opens at 5pm, but you can be served at the bar if you want to eat earlier. The pricing is fair, and the food is absolutely delicious. We were visiting the area on a trip for three nights, and decided to eat here two times. The staff was all very friendly and helpful, and the chef even came out to speak with us about their menu, since I have a severe peanut allergy. He reassured us that there were no peanuts in his kitchen, and he even decided to avoid using peanut oil in his fry oil mix, with allergies in mind. If you plan on going late, or on a weekend, you should call in beforehand to see if you need a reservation. Pictured below: Mushroom ravioli with a light butter sauce, fresh sage, caramelized onions, and butternut squash. Overall: A+

Yelp
Had a very nice evening meal. Warm pear salad and pickle chips. Delish! Everyone at the restaurant is warm, friendly and professional. I am looking forward to visiting again soon!

Yelp
Standard base lodge type food. Stick with the burger, wings and fries. I tried the salmon, which was dry with nothing much going on. I think I squeezed four lemons & even added a pat of butter to just make it have flavor. They add some sort of juice or orange liquor to my old fashioned, which is probably a local bar thing. Stick with beer. Convenient to post skiing with little kids tho. S'mores are provided in the back fire pit on Saturdays during the ski season at 8p for free by the hotel.

Yelp
The food is fine but the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced at a hotel. The hostess or so-called manager is the rudest person at a restaurant I've ever encountered. In addition, the policies at this hotel restaurant make you feel like you just came out of jail. I have never experienced so much lack of trust from a company especially considering that the staff know the repeat customers. Senior management has a lot to learn about this business. The restaurant does ok as they have a target audience of hotel guests. VAIL - please take notice and treat your customers better, it won't take much. Just some changes in senior management and staff and teaching common courtesy and customer service.

Peter R.

Yelp
Customer service is horrible! Customer Service is horrible! Did I say yet that customer service is horrible? As we were eating the workers were vacuuming around us! Workers do not have a vested interest and it shows. The bartenders (male and female) were hiding most of the time. Extremely rude service, the customer does not matter. Funny, we ordered two Stella's, at same time. One was half price, the other full price, because they rung up on the register one at a time. The first one was rung up at 5:59:55pm and the second was rung at 6pm, they told us, HAPPY HOUR ended at 6pm. We were shocked, yet amused, as were the numerous men and women talking to us. Bottom line, customer service is and has been horrible for the last 3 years and there is no one to complain to being the manager is one of the problems

Yelp
My buddies and I have been coming up to the Hunter area for 26 years every year around this time. We've enjoyed many a fine meal at this restaurant, which has always been a little pricey for the area it is located. This year I was appalled to see the major increase in price es, especially the specials, which were about $35 each. Didn't expect to pay NYC type prices this far North of NYC. I also was taken aback by the manager of the restaurant. We literally were ushered out to pay our bill quickly, as one of our servers was offended by one of my friends. Instead of addressing it more professionally by talking to us when said offense occurred, we proceeded to have a parade of 4 or 5 servers bring various portions of our meal to us, with our original waitress no where to be found. only when we got the bill and saw the manager shove it in my face to pay and leave the restaurant, did we get the story of the waitress being offended. While I tipped the waitress well, I would've expected better treatment of me, as I paid the entire check, also leaving a healthy 30 percent tip. While my friend came back afterwards to apologize, I didn't think the way I was treated and my overall table was treated well. Unfortunately may need to seek other eating options next year when we return, partially due to the increased prices, but also to the way I was treated by management of the restaurant.

Yelp
My family and I stayed at the condos for a wedding last weekend and the bar was a 2-minute walk. The spot is a good place for drinks and really late night eats. The food isn't the best, but the bartenders and company are what make it "A-OK!", according to Yelp. All the guests came for drinks the night before the wedding and the bartender on duty did a really good job accommodating everyone with friendly and quick service despite being the only bartender working. I randomly ordered a French Martini and he delivered! I recommend coming here for drinks and the bar pizza and maybe venture elsewhere for dinner and breakfast. Nice addition for guests staying at the hotel since it's right downstairs.

Yelp
Feeling guilty, I must review this restaurant for underestimating it beforehand. The food was fantastic. Freshly cooked, good quality and excellent taste. I ordered the Thai stir fry -Wow! My daughter - Ramen , My husband- chicken pomegranate. ALL WERE EXCELLENT. Applauses to the chef and kitchen staff.

Amanda M.

Yelp
Went for brunch on Easter, buffet style food. The food was really good and there was a lot to choose from but the price of the buffet which was like $20 a person didn't include drinks. The staff was very friendly, but a little to friendly, talking at your table for a while, while you're trying to eat. I got a piece of chicken franchise and felt it was a little dry. The ham and turkey however was really good, along with the penne al vodka and penne alfredo. They had a few things for dessert and i got like a chocolate, raspberry cheesecake piece and it was amazing.

Yelp
Came here from Philly. We loved having happy hour and apps. The house wine and Stella was perfect. We also had the Mediterranean plate, boneless wings and pizza and everything was delicious. Would recommend for post ski drinks and dinner.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Reasonably priced food and very delicious. Got the salmon for $20, my friend got the Thai chicken stir fry for $17. Happy hour at the bar was from 4pm-7pm so we had drinks before dinner. $3.50 for a glass of wine??! Can't beat it. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Made reservations for 6pm on a Friday but the restaurant was empty so reservations weren't necessary.

Yelp
I ate here 5 different times with a group during my stay. Every time was a pretty bad experience. It all tastes like dressed up cafeteria food. Breakfast buffet is pretty basic. Mass produced mediocre food. Lunch was okay except the service was terrible. Server straight up forgot to give me fries with my sandwich... just gave me a lone sandwich on an otherwise empty plate. Finally got fries, but no ketchup. I ended up walking into the kitchen area to get ketchup myself... server had vanished. Dinner was terrible. Definitely dont get the "thai" stir fry unless you want to take a bath in sweet chili sauce. Our server for dinner was really unhelpful and rude the whole time. I would have quit coming here after the first time if I wasnt with a group. Save your money and go literally anywhere else but here. Its glorified low grade cafeteria food with terrible service.

Celine C.

Yelp
Whoever the night manager in the restaurant is -- she has a terrible attitude and poor customer service --- she should not be in the people business. Food was good -- not awesome and even the bartenders were not friendly. This is disappointing because we have been staying here for years and we love it. They need to review the menu options and do a refresh and they definitely need to get better employees. There is a lot of competition and they should be happy to have customers instead of annoyed.

Yelp
We were staying at Kaatskill Mountain Club and went to dinner at Van Winkles. To our surprise the food was delicious and great staff/service. You must try their Margarita Pizza!!!!

J H.

Yelp
Ate here for convenience. We were sat promptly upon arrival. For starters: too much confusion at the front desk; during our wait for dinner, we watched 2 groups of 2 come by to leave their name on a 'waitlist' that was never followed - a 3rd group of 2 came & were sat promptly - the difference between groups? The first 2 were Asian, while the 3rd were Caucasian. Menu on their website is incorrect. Dishes/descriptions on menu aren't fully accurate & waiters weren't aware of changes until after the food was brought out. Forgetfulness from staff, attempt to improve themselves prior to handing over the check - in order to regain a good tip? Maybe. Wouldn't eat here again.

Yelp
It was the day of Nor'easter Stella and there were very few options for food that evening. There was a legitimate 24 inches of snow on the ground and our car was buried in. Ordered take out since the place was packed because well there was a nor'easter. So I will do the quick rundown. Cheddar cheeseburger medium rare was not bad; seasoned well, still juicy and cooked properly especially since it was take out. Arugula and pear and beet salad with goat cheese. They did not mess it up. Jalapeño poppers were most likely the same sysco ones that you get from the Carroll Gardens Diner in Brooklyn. Chicken wings medium spicy were actually pretty good and they were huge, like on growth hormone huge. Pasta bolognese was not bad, not overcooked and well it was made with cream so how bad can it be. Now the funny thing was the Thai chicken stir-fry. When I ordered the girl paused and then said ok. Now I know why...they substituted chicken with the chicken nuggets from the kids menu...pretty funny actually. To finish the meal we ordered chocolate cake. There wasn't a single crumb left!

Meghan P.

Yelp
Unfortunately would never go their again. Although food was average the service and staff was terrible. Management and waitress both were rude. Have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant before. Definitely would never recommend

Amelia M.

Yelp
You're too lazy after a full day of skiing to want to drive around and get food AND you have a premium parking spot which you don't want to loses so you eat here. It's a very limited menu and pricey for the quality of food you're getting. Lunch doesn't open until 12N and basically looks like the dinner menu - limited. We had dinner, drinks later and then lunch the next day. The burger (always get it well done as it still comes red in the middle), fries are nothing special and we never finish them but i would fight my spouse for the quarter slice of pickle we get, chicken wings are good and medium spicy hit the spot but more than 3 skinny slivers of celery would be nice, their special pizza was okay but I won't order it again as the vinaigrette topping was too sweet and I seriously doubt it was made fresh (FreshDirect does a better job), onion soup is tasty and I would order that again but the chicken sandwich did not look appetizing so I left that for my spouse to eat. I wish they'd serve a basic Italian dish like spaghetti with meatballs or penne with sausage and brocoli, a nice soup like NE clam chowder or chili and any sandwich not on those nasty brioche rolls (maybe they do this because they'll stay fresher longer than a nice kaiser roll). Pumpkin soup in Dec? Now there's a not so creative way to recycle their Oct carved pumpkins. Next time, i'll bring leftovers or a tv dinner before I eat here again. Drinks are ok but they need to get a decent wine.

Michael F.

Yelp
They have the WORST attitude, it's their way or the highway. The bar is part of the restaurant, doesn't matter if you don't want to sit next to the loud noise, too bad. They think the food is the best so they are doing you a favor if you pay to eat there. Bring a chain saw if you want to cut the steak.
google avatar

Yuri Y.

Yelp
This is a very nice venue for catered parties -- we hosted several family events for 40+ recently and VW did not disappoint. Located in a ski resort/hotel dining room -- it has an institutional feel -- especially in the summer -- but that does not detract from the overall experience. Whether a la carte or buffet style -- the food was honest and the service pleasant. Not sure I would go out of my way to eat dinner for two here -- given the other choices in the area, but it is serviceable for what it is.

Yelp
ate here off-peak. found the food and service to be great. Between the hubs and me, we had two meals there...everything was good: fig salad, chipotle chicken sandwich, steak, and Bouillabaisse seafood stew. The chicken was surprisingly juicy and tender. The seafood stew was fresh-tasting. I wasn't a huge fan of the Sunday brunch but it wasn't bad. I was unfortunately on a restricted diet so only had yogurt and scrambled eggs. I would recommend offering some hard-boiled eggs too. Finally the servers we had were super accommodating and even remembered us the next day. We also went in starving 20 minutes before closing and they were very kind. Also when there was a chance of rain for the wedding, I saw the same servers pitch in to move all furniture out of the lobby to another place. the teamwork and attitude exhibited was impressive!
google avatar

Eric Z.

Yelp
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone whose in the area We had to leave a voicemail and call back but I was able to get a rsvp for 8:00 on a Friday night for 14 people. Not the easiest thing to do. Everyone showed up hungry from a day of sking and the Food was enjoyed by everyone. Lots of people got the beef stew and it was very good. I would def recommend for any large groups staying in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
So far, the best meal I've had in Hunter. Great service and amazing meal. The open kitchen allowed us to see how meticulous the chefs were in prepping our meal. Even the wings we ordered as an appetizer were prepared with care. The truffle fries were ordered by half the table and did not disappoint. I personally had the burger, which I know, is sad to say at such a great restaurant but it's what I was in the mood for and let me tell you, it was cooked to perfection. My wife had the Bolognese and really enjoyed it, the pizzas ordered from the other side of the table were gobbled up and the muscles were meaty, large soaked in a flavorful broth. Excellent flavors all around. We left happy and full.

Yelp
Just an typical restaurant with mini bar and seating area. We showed up without reservation and despite the waitress telling us the reservation were full, there was no one at the restaurant. Onion soup was not so great. I liked the Thai Chicken Soup. Prices are very reasonable

B K.

Yelp
Poor service, poor quality food. Bartender appears to resent being there. Bar was not wiped down so we had to sit in an area that had spills and food remnants. We would have asked her to wipe it but she picked up her cigarettes and went for a smoke while we decided what to drink. When we had decided, she was nowhere to be found. The workspace behind the bar was also a mess and littered with crap for lack of a better word. Pasta with bolognese sauce was overcooked and bland. The meat tastes as if it were from a can or jar. Salt and pepper shakers slide in your hands from the grime. Hunter mountain has great people working in ski rental area, ticket area, ski program etc. this hotel and restaurant do not match that level of service or caring. There are some substantially better options in Tannersville as well as Windham.

Thomas T.

Yelp
This place was pretty good food was decent, and i had a nice waitress, inside it looks preety nice. If you were not staying at hunter mountain you may not know about this place as it is in the lobby of one of the hotels ( the biggest one ) just a side note they serve pepsi instead of coke.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Whole experience was laughable. We started off with drinks at the bar, the manager working behind the bar- was full of dirty looks when we gave our order, which was not difficult or out of the ordinary. The dining room was empty, but we waited 30 minutes for our table for 8. It was one table set for 7....when we pointed that out, the response was "this is your table". So we helped ourselves by pulling over another chair and squeezing in. Which was fine. After a 15 minute wait for drinks, the waitress yelled at us for checking on the status. Saying "can't you see there are only 2 bartenders, when your wine and beer is ready, I'll bring it out." Again, the restaurant was about half full. When my husband approached the manager before we left to let her know about our poor experience with the waitress, she was not apologetic or helpful at all. We definitely won't be back ever. I can't believe they treat customers that way!!

Rod L.

Yelp
The food is always good but the service is unpredictable. Had dinner there Saturday night. The restaurant was not exceptionally crowded but the service was not quick. This restaurant seems to have a hard time keeping good wait servers. We ordered wings as an appetizer as soon as we sat down. Received drinks menus, ordered our entrees. The entrees arrived and never received the wings. There aren't many other choices in the area.

Tracey O.

Yelp
This was a great decision for dinner. The atmosphere is comfortable yet classy. The bartender shared a nice history of the restaurant and hotel as well as the area. He made 2 nice cocktails as well. Francis served us dinner. I had the surf and turf. The steak was medium rare to perfection, the salmon cake was light and full of flavor. Francis was the quick, friendly and attentive. She even took the time to chat about our pups ba k in the room and packed up a gourmet doggie bag for them. She was excellent.

Philip D.

Yelp
Here at Hunter for our yearly ski trip and decided to got to Van, the food was very good, crab cakes were the best ever had! Service was good. I would defiantly recommend this place.

Louise P.

Yelp
We ate here on a slow Tuesday night before a big blizzard. There is a bar with a few tables and then the dining room and an open kitchen. It's a nice space and conveniently located inside the Katskill Mountain Club hotel right on the slopes. I had the apple and goat cheese salad which was delicious. I followed it up with the Philly cheesesteak pizza. I asked for light onions and peppers and it came out with none at all. My salad was so good though and I was already kinda full so I didn't complain. The server was very sweet and I didn't feel the need to send it back or anything. Both dishes were delicious! They didn't have many options for beer and it looked like all the wines were by the bottle only, but when I asked I was allowed to order by the glass. The server even put it in a plastic cup for me so I could take it up to my room. All in all it was a lovely meal. A little pricey but that's to be expected at the resort.

J C.

Yelp
Reservations are must. Good food and nice atmosphere. The Thai chicken is particularly good!

Foodie C.

Yelp
wow, did i just walk into my high school cafeteria (except now we just have iphones and credit cards to throw around?) the bf and i opted to dine at the bar for the happy hour drink specials and also ordered the black and tan onion rings, the apple and fig salad with grilled shrimp, and the chipotle chicken sandwich before beginning our 3 hour drive home. the apple and fig salad was very good with fresh ingredients. i was disappointed that for an extra $5, i only got 2 firm, large pieces of shrimp. the black and tan onion rings were worth a try for the horseradish sauce pairing and the bf seemed fine with his sandwich (although he wasn't feeling well that day.) if i were to come back to van winkle's, i would probably opt for the dining room to avoid the rowdy-ness of the bar area.
google avatar

Marie T S.

Yelp
Always a good choice for delicious food (great wings & crab cake) but also enjoy the company of the bartenders/servers. We usually sit at the bar for the conversation or they will stop by our table for a chat. Well not so anymore (I suppose you need to be a local)! Last night a new server, Ed, definitely was NOT Mr. Personality! In fact he didn't seem to enjoy his job!! Please bring back Joe or Frank!!!!

Betty G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, happy hour, food and service. Make sure to secure your reservation- because this is the place to be after a day of skiing/riding at Hunter Mtn... thanks Josephine and staff at Van Winkles for a great night out!

Mary Jane C.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service great. Our waitress was attentive and the dinner was wonderful. We have had dinner at Vanwinkles on several occasions and never disappointed. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Great service and wonderful food. Nice atmosphere, too. Josephine was helpful and wonderful--a great hostess! We had a great time and look forward to the next time!

Giancarlo P.

Yelp
Excellent food. Excellent service. Here for two days and had dinner the first night, going back again to try other dishes. Had the crab cake appetizer and it was amazing...also had the lobster mac and cheese, excellent. .. the staff was prompt, friendly and on point....great place....

Sheila C.

Yelp
The service at the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired! The assistant manager ( Sharon) was completely un-accommodating and rude. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Brian M.

Yelp
If I was going on an electric chair, that would be my last meal. I had the 14 oz grilled rib-eye with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Redonkulous!!! My girlfriend loved her thai chicken stir-fry entree as well. We look forward to going to Hunter Mountain again just to eat here. Hope this post helped. :)
