The Ride-Along Report: First Takes From Last Night’s Dinner

"What It Is: A big restaurant/club on the Lower East Side where you’ll see large groups of people taking shots and picking at food Perfect For: Wasting Your Time And Money We’re currently working on a guide to the least-worst party restaurants in NYC, so we decided to have a full dinner at Vandal. This place is from the same people behind Lavo and Tao (which should give you a good idea of what goes down here), and the menu is similar to that of a school cafeteria where you might get pizza one day and stir fry the next. We had a few things, like tortilla soup dumplings and steak tartare that was spread on a big pretzel - and none of it was the worst food we’ve ever had, but we didn’t like paying money for it. The space was mostly filled with large tables of people taking shots, and, while it looked like most people were having fun, we’re going to do our best to never come back. Verdict: This is a theme park for adults with corporate cards. "Vandal is a big restaurant on the Lower East Side, and it’s from the same people behind Lavo and Tao. Like those places, this is a spot where you can eat pricey, mediocre food while you enjoy a party atmosphere and reflect upon the fact that you probably don’t want to be here. The menu is all over the place, with things like tortilla soup dumplings, shawarma salad, and pizza - and, while the dumplings taste like they were recently defrosted, the pepperoni pizza is surprisingly not bad. But the rest of it is much worse. So unless you have a corporate card and you’re just looking for a place to drink your dinner, you shouldn’t come here." - Bryan Kim

One of the hot spots in the city. Hip crowd, great atmosphere, tasty and variety of food, great cocktails. The bartender was awesome. The only down side of the restaurant is if you are going as a group, you still have to wait for every party in your group to be seated. As a result we had to have dinner at the bar. They have a part like a sports bar with large screen TVs and a night club downstairs. The nightclub is nice but not very roomy and doesn’t have high ceilings.

Firstly, let me talk about the service. Our server was so pleasant and friendly, that we felt like we were talking to someone we've known for years. He answered any questions we had, and was attentive to us. The drinks were so heavenly, my drink had rum, banana and pineapple in it, can't rem the name, but my whole crew ended up ordering it once they tried it. The food, was beyond my expectations, not a single complaint to utter.

Vandal was fabulous! Our server was extremely attentive and professional. All of the options we chose were extremely good. The salad is not just a simple salad - -it was dripping with flavor. The tortellini were a good size and delicious but on the sweeter side. The mushroom pizza was probably our favorite off the menu. The poke was good, though a bit of a small portion to share. The seared scallops were cooked perfectly, but were probably the least exciting thing we ordered that night. (Nothing wrong with them, just nothing out of the ordinary there.) We were celebrating my mom's birthday and they were super kind about that, bringing out our dessert order with a candle. (We ordered the ice cream cake -- literally made completely out of ice cream but somehow it was the PERFECT temperature to eat and enjoy without freezing our teeth off. The best part were the "pop rocks" on top flavored like vanilla or "corn flakes"!) We also ordered three cocktails which were unique and presented with a great balance of flavor and booze. All in all, this restaurant is wonderful. It is very pricey, but tapas style tends to be that way.

Great for girls night or a date night. Owned by Tao group, Vandal is the latest talk of town. Modern decor, food bursting with flavors and cocktails that will keep you ordering more, we had a great evening here. Double dutch cocktail was superb, and small plates like sea bass tacos, spring rolls and mushroom pizza were delicious. Entrance is via a florist shop and just gorgeous. Bunny at the door cannot be missed. Came here for restaurant week as well.

We were a group of ten and were pleasantly greeted and waited at the bar for the rest of the party. The selections were great and the bar tenders were on point with whatever was asked. When we sat at the dining room you could not help but to notice all of the artistic surroundings and ambiance. Music was a bit loud at times making it difficult to converse; however the food more than made up for it! So definitely a fun dinning experience.

I love how random this place is! The entrance is so different and then the bar is so cool looking! They have a restaurant, bar, dance club, it's all in one. We sat at the bar and they had happy hour all night. The food was so good and the prices were so reasonable for it being in NYC! Pur bartender was really nice and all of our drinks and food came out really fast. Oh and their bathrooms are really nice! I highly recommend coming here for drinks or just to hang out. Really cool!

The place was very trendy and fun! The food and drink was good. I specifically liked the barro style chicken tacos! They were amazing. The chicken parm was very large portion and good. The wild mushroom pizza was good but if you don’t like too much oil ob your pizza I don’t recommend. The steak tartar appetizer was okay.

The place is very artistic and well designed. However the branch food was a disappointment as the branch dishes were small and expensive. The Pavlova was lovely, the big sexy hamburger was tiny (really tiny!), the nicoise salad was nice, the avocado toast was nice but too expensive, the pizza was great, and the steak pieces with egg and chips was not that great.
