Vanguard Wine Bar (Midtown West)

They were out of most wines so we went for what the bartender recommended and it tasted very watered down. Not much of service either; we had to get the drinks and water ourselves. The interior was nice though, so if you don’t mind compromising the taste, it does give a good atmosphere.

Stunning secret escape from the bustle of the city and so close to the Gershwin Theatre for those pre show drinks. Gorgeous wines, lovely service and great atmosphere; loud enough music to create a vibe but low enough to be able to talk. Didn't try the food this time.

My absolute favorite wine bar in the city!! The decor and furnishings make this place super cozy and delightful to be in. I come here in the evenings multiple times a week just to relax and unwind with a glass of wine. The staff is incredible!! Super friendly and accommodating. Especially Cynthia, Pedro and Alejandro!! The food is also really good. I’ve tried a bunch of the appetizers, sandwiches and desserts and they never disappoint. Also, the wine selection is extensive and very diverse. Definitely recommend this place any day of the week!

A gem! Just a couple of minutes away from the Times Square but very quiet and cozy. Every single wine on the menu is available by the glass. The wine list is somewhat skewed towards France but there is plenty of great US stuff too. Extra points for having Steve de Long's maps on the walls, I am a big fan.

One of my fave wine bars especially before or after a show. I always bring people here for a cozy wine experience. Cynthia is a gracious host and always treats people right. Affordable and great wine list!

Cynthia was so wonderful!!! Really kind, on top of it, and engaged me with my convo haha. Really good wine too! I never go to this area but she made me wanna go back :) For what I got the check didn’t surprise me/was actually really good esp considering it’s in Midtown.

Great, quiet atmosphere. Wine by glass or bottle. Delicious tapas (small plates). We ordered several and shared: Meat and Cheese Plate; Mushroom, shallot, onion tartine; baked Camembert and Apricot Preserves, and Chocolate Truffles for dessert (truffles are VERY small). We had a wonderful time with great service.

needed a place to pregame before dinner with the coworkers. Among the madness of sports bars and theater crowds was this quiet gem. my gorgeous tattooed bartender welcomed me with a lovely Pinot and encouraged me to try the open faced sandwiches. I chose one with goat cheese, jambon, and Mission figs. entertained by the wine descriptions, the eclectic mix of music and the bubbly service, I decided then and there, I would most certainly be back. UPDATE: went back, got a Cab Franc, which is my new favorite red. I wish this was closer to my house, but so nice to have a wonderful place in Midtown to enjoy, as well.

So we came here after celebrating the opening of a show and it was nice. It is a very small place and because of that it was very very loud. But we did have a section and back where we hung out. The people work there were very nice and they got us our food and everything in a very efficient manner. They did have a nice charcuterie board, which was a nice touch. It was nice because they had a lot of chairs and such so we could sit down and talk to each other but for a large group, the booths were not conducive to talking openly. There was no place to put our stuff only came in and so we were very much crammed in the back. Another issue is that they had a Bathroom situation where the bathroom is very dark and it was very very hard to get there. Another issue was that it wasn't uncommon to walk in on someone. I don't know what the issue was with the bathroom, but those of us were sitting by did have to alert people that someone was in the bathroom and using it They are aware of how dark it is and it seems like you just have to live with it. But it shouldn't be that way it should be much better lit. One person in our party said "I don't want to become a story but it's really dark back there and I'm afraid to go back." That's not cool. But all in all they had really good wine and they have very good pours and I'm glad that we went . if I was in the area and had to come by I could do that but it was very hard to find and I spent about 25 minutes trying to find it after I was told that I had arrived. I was not the only person who had that experience. Now that I know where it is, I'm fine, but I wouldn't wanna meet people there if they've never been there before.

Vanguard always delivers a great wine menu in an intimate space, and their Midtown West location is no exception. The menu has a wide range of wines, in every sense of the word -- different varieties and price points, broken out in a way that makes it easy to choose, for those of us whose knowledge of wine stops at how to drink it. Staff was super helpful, and always down to give recommendations. For me, the space itself steals the show at this location. A long bar with plenty of seating, as well as high tops and cozy booths throughout the L-shaped floor plan. The lighting and decor definitely set the mood for a more laid back vibe -- no blaring music to talk over here. I only wish they had more than one bathroom! All in all, a great spot for drinks with a small group or a date. Definitely recommend Vanguard over Fidelity!

Decent, more approachable, chain wine bar with late night eats. A very snacky menu with cheese and olives and bread. This was our first stop on my April NYC trip with my friend, and we were very happy with the wine offerings. A big theater crowd here for sure as it was in the same block as An Enemy of the People and Wicked. We sat at the bar, the service was fast, not a chatty bar staff but friendly enough and when we asked to share wine he split it into to glasses, which was nice! Doesn't look that big from the outside. Perfect location and would go back. Again, it's NYC, so the wines were around $15-20 a glass.

A friend and I visited this location of Vanguard after arriving in NYC for a weekend (it was very near our hotel). It was the perfect place for a late drink and snack! We shared a few small plates (some marinated olives and a tartine with mission figs, jamon, and goat cheese), which were good - great snacks after the train ride to NYC. Their wine by glass offerings are pretty varied - split into: unoaked and lightly oaked whites, rich whites, aromatic whites, earthy/mineral whites, roses, orange and skin contact wines, soft and fruit-forward reds, earthy and spicy reds, mild mannered reds, bold reds, and sweet wines. We tried an orange wine, a white wine, and shared a sweet wine to finish. The service was great, and the ambiance was lovely, too - very European bistro vibey. I'd happily return to this or one of their other locations.

Love coming here, they're great with large groups, small groups or just to meet a couple friends. Cindy is always working the bar and she is wonderful, so attentive and accommodating. The food is all apps and picky food but it is good here, my favorite is the mushroom flatbread. Great wine selection and even if you don't know what you want, Cindy and help you find it. Love the cozy vibes too.

Love this wine bar in Midtown West. It's never hard to find a table which surprises me because the wine and service has always been excellent. It's also a good place to go as a group. I'm not sure if they take reservations but haven't had an issue finding a table. The wine selection is good and reasonably priced. You can also get a mix of cheeses and charcuterie which comes with a mix of fixings.

Great selection of wines from all over. Reasonably priced for the wine that you get and the great service. I had a salad and a deep red one. Perfect pairing. Love the ambiance and there's lots of seating here if you're looking in a pinch.

Surprisingly uncrowded wine bar in the theater district. Came here for a friend's bday and thought space was perfect, ambiance great and drinks solid. Now I know there's a good bar in midtown that we can head to after a broadway play!

You pass by a place and never notice. It's a New York magic door. New worlds beneath your feet. The sign is small that says ¨wine barç*. Even hard to find specifically loking for. I had a blackberry cinnamon note French blend under the earth spicy fatagory and a Garay under the bright fruit mild mannered datagory. Place looked kind of like it could be in France. Bartender was friendly real pretty and normal. If you're a oeniophile you might really like this place.

Cute wine bar in the theater district that I stumbled upon after dinner and before going to see Wicked. The bartenders were very friendly and cheerful; I think they had just reopened recently from COVID also. I liked the vibe - super chill and good wine list as well.

I love Vanguard! I come every time I'm in NYC. Cynthia is a fabulous sommelier and makes you feel right at home.

Decent place for a few of us to grab a bottle of wine and chat before a show. A little pricy, but what isn't. Service is walk up and take to your seat, but it served a purpose. Servers were pleasant.

Great spot in theater district! The somme said this is the fourth location in the city. Newly opened. We came on a Saturday Pre show and it was very cool. We had Domaine Vieux Pressoir 15 (Notre Dame) very good. Plus we had some sweets - macaroons and truffles yum!!

Really neat wine bar in the times sq area. The layout is perfect for private events of 70 people, enough seating to chill and space to walk around and mix-and-mingle. The service was impeccable. The staff really knows how to take care of clients. I can't wait to host private social events at this venue. Glad I found it!

We stopped in here to kill some time before an 8pm show on a Saturday night and were very pleased. The bartender and waitstaff were very attentive and helped make some excellent choices for some wine pairings. Perfect little place to enjoy a drink before catching a show in the theater district. It's located right next to the Gershwin Theatre.

Super cute spot in the middle of Midtown/ theatre district. The vibe was chill and not pretentious. When I went on late on a Friday night, there was no table service. My friends and I ordered at the bar, from an extremely knowledgeable person. He mentioned that they're switching out their wine selection next week so they didn't have a few wines in stock. Funny enough, the 3 wines we wanted weren't in stock but he recommended their replacements and they were all very tasty.

This place is such a treasure! I came here for the first time the month that it opened. I was meeting friends at a bar a block away, however they were closed for a holiday party. While looking for another bar we came across this place. These guys have the best wine selection, the place is super chill and easy-going. They don't come and wait on tables, you have to go get your drink and place the order for food at the bar. Perhaps the only negative is that they need a better selection of food. But I still love this place and have come here many many times since!

It's a cute small wine bar in midtown. Me and my friend are big fans of red wines and we absolutely loved their house red. We got a bottle of Vanguard House Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon with Pimento cheese that was so fresh and delicious. Definitely going there again soon.

Two coworkers and I stumbled upon Vanguard during a visit to NYC last week. This place has a relaxing vibe and serves great wine. The sommelier on site helped us pick the perfect wine(red + Saint Amour)and helped us determine several others on the menu that were excellent. I would frequent this shop if I was local and consider visiting during my next visit.

Great ambiance and the bartender sold us a bottle of red that we actually like (and yes we are a bit picky). Great spot in midtown and we will likely be back soon. They are currently changing the menu but hopefully they keep some great Napa cabs. Overall solid wine bar in NYC, maybe a touch of that famous NYC attitude, but it won't keep this Jersey girl away.

So happy this cute neighborhood gem opened up right by me! I now have a go-to post-work spot with its cozy interior, friendly staff, and, of course, great wine selection. I like to sit at the bar with a friend, and they never rush you or pressure you out of your seat. Hearty pour, good bites to nibble (I've only had the flatbread so far - small but delicious), and a cute vibe :)

Came here right after watching wicked at The Gershwin Theater and my boyfriend and I had a blast. Nice ambiance, great wine (though I can't say what it actually was seeing as we were already a wee buzzed from our showtime drinks). We had a great time there and will definitely be coming back again to enjoy it to the fullest!

Vanguard is wonderful! It is the perfect spot for after-work drinks. The wine selection is tasteful and reasonably-priced and service has always been friendly.I prefer it so much to other local wine spots (like Bar Veloce - which is overpriced). It has wonderful French flair and charm. Highly recommend! The Original Malbec is a nice, dry red.

We've toured most of the wine bars in Midtown and this is one of the best... came in post theatre and having somewhere nice to go open late for a good glass of wine and a bite is fabulous. Great jazz music playing in the background, nice wines and charcuterie- perfect. Attentive service and lovely ambiance- we will be back.

Absolutely wonderful! I love their wine selections! It wasn't too busy on a Friday evening either. There are a lot more seats compared to the one on the upper west side. Great place for dates or just friends get-togethers. I wish there were more snack options.
