What to Eat and Drink on a Day Trip From Seattle to Vashon Island | Eater Seattle

"This long-beloved bakery has been praised for over 35 years for its sweet and savory croissants and other baked goods; highlights include the hot mushroom and Swiss cheese croissant, “packed to the gills with ‘shrooms,” and the Maple Bacon Pecan Croissant, described as “wonderfully crunchy and maple-y.” Two wood benches in front allow for thoughtful people-watching." - Sharon McDonnell

Google
Great variety of baked goods for all, but also amazing non-wheat treats available! Anyone with wheat sensitivity knows it's hard to find good baked goods. They have several options. All good! Reasonably priced too. Thank you!

Google
The aroma is great. Spent the day visiting the island and came a crossed this neat spot. Gluten and vegan free options. Friendly and patient staff. Questions were answered and plenty of options to choose from. Loved the strawberry shortbread and highly recommend an espresso/coffee if you have time to stop by.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely worth the ferry ride. Vashon Island Baking Company is a gem that punches way above its weight. Owner Elijah Berry has created something extraordinary here—part bakery, part haven, and 100% delicious. The craftsmanship and creativity that go into every item are next-level. Standouts include the flaky, buttery croissants, the seasonal fruit galettes, and the olive oil cake that somehow tastes like sunshine and comfort at the same time. And don’t miss the freshly milled sourdough, which has the kind of depth and tang that bakers chase their whole careers. Every detail, from the ingredients to the design of the space, reflects care, love, and a fierce commitment to quality. It’s the kind of place you come back to Vashon for—not just stumble into while you’re here. Elijah is doing something rare: keeping old-world baking soulfully alive with just the right modern twist. A must-stop. A destination. A reason to believe in good things

We came in to pick up some pastries and everything looks really good. The young man behind the counter was nice and friendly. It took us awhile to figure out what we wanted and he wasn't bothered at all. We enjoyed the Cinnamon twist, banana bread, pumpkin bread, and cookies.

Google
Very yummy and freshly baked pastries! I tried a few different things, and the croissants, by far, are the best of any I've had in western WA......delish!! Croissants are well worth a special trip there, and at a reasonable price. The other parties seemed a bit pricey, though, for what they were! I recommend making the trip over to the island for( brunch) croissants at Vashon Island Bakery! You won't be disappointed.

Google
Spent a few days on Vashon and the pastries that we found at Vashon Island Baking were one of the highlights of our trip. The lemon coconut scone was the best, the orange currant scone was great, and the ginger molasses cookie was perfect. Highly recommended!

Google
I ordered cinnamon twists, they put them in the little bag (so only half of my bread was in the bag), and left it on the counter, so my bread was touching the counter, which I don't think is clean enough to leave your food on. The bread was dry and not even good. I cannot believe this place has 4.7 stars.

Lori Snyder

Google
Cute little shop and fantastic customer service. Got coffee and found out the shop makes all of its flavored syrups. Everything we ordered was so fresh! I had the best, creamiest Quiche Lorraine I have EVER had! A bit spendy but totally worth it!!!

Chris B.

Yelp
Their scones are the best! So are their bran muffins! They must be very popular: one minute, there are two customers inside: the next, ten.

Yelp
Stopped in twice during a long weekend. The first time was mid afternoon and there was still a good selection of things available. The cream cheese croissant was delicious. The next morning I went back for coffee, great, and a chocolate croissant, omg a must. I also grabbed a bee sting bar for the flight home. Tasty and it traveled well! Very small location, no seating, but benches across the street if needed!
google avatar

Melba M.

Yelp
The Bee Sting was not very sweet. Service was good. The location was centrally located.

Yelp
Great service. Delicious baked goods! We've been there when they were slammed and despite being busy, everyone is friendly! This time, we were one of just a few folks and staff had time to chat and describe some of the amazing artwork and decorations. We ordered a large scone and gigantic donut for a morning treat, and then took a piece of pizza for lunch (which was enough for three of us). Really love this place and we look forward to another visit in the future!

Yelp
Still had loads of options left by 3 pm!! Savory and sweet pastry and pies, didn't get coffee but looked good too! Casual spot, not lots of seating space, but across from a park and downtown so plenty of spots to go. Right off the highway on the way to the ferry, so we just grabbed a snack to get in line for the 3:20. Bobs burger (vegetarian) is apparently an ode to the shop that was here before this one and I think it's a sweet gesture!! So flavorful, comes warm, great texture. All the sweets were superb. Def will be my new stop spot heading to the ferry!!!

Yelp
Quick service and pastries/baked goods are solid. Got the berzerk bar (oats, jam, etc.), salted caramel chocolate shortbread, strawberry gluten free bar, carrot cake loaf, sausage egg and cheese croissant and a slice of coconut cake. The berzerk bar is good, lots of oats and just enough jam. The chocolate caramel shortbread was decadent but the chocolate layer was too thick, so it's not something you can just "eat". Strawberry bar is gluten free so while it tasted good. I couldn't get past the "sand" feel in my mouth. The sausage croissant was hefty, salty and needed something to balance it, croissant itself was good. Haven't had a chance to try the loaf or cake slice yet. Partner got a plain croissant and said it was good, she doesn't like croissants so that's saying something...she wasn't impressed with the latte though.
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
Delicious crisp croissants here. I had both the almond croissant and the ham and cheese croissant. A perfect little breakfast treat. The savory croissants are on the back wall in case you don't see it at first. Looks like they have some coffee options. I didn't notice any indoor seating. Very friendly service.

Yelp
A colleague asked what I would want to try from here knowing I'm a lover of the croissant. They would pick-up and deliver to the office (very nice offer). I went for the plain croissant and a chocolate one. I didn't enjoy the plain croissant as much as the chocolate one. The plain felt a little oily to the touch and just wasn't that tasty. I think it was a bit dry inside to...I missed the moist layering of dough. The chocolate tasted much better. It was't as crumbly and was a bit moister - which hit the spot for me. My other colleagues enjoyed their treats. So overall, I would recommend this bakery.

Yelp
Such high hopes for this Gluten Free (GF) family. Place smelled great and all bakery items looked good. As we are constrained to a GF lifestyle, we let our eyes take over and we bought a number of (GF) treats. And there ended the good review. I should have bought a small item to check the flour type. Unfortunately, their GF flour is white rice based. One bite and all the moisture was immediately sucked right out of our mouths. The fillings in the two cookie bars ($5 each) could not hide the dryness -- AND the the scone was one of the worst ever encountered. It was dry as a bone and totally disintegrated at first bite. You'd think bakeries who offer GF items would experiment a bit more with non-white rice based flours available and/or would have discovered one of the best GF flours we have found anywhere in the world, Manini's of Kent, WA. In any case, this bakery is definitely not worth a 2nd try - at least for this GF family. Two stars for presentation and good coffee.

Yelp
Vashon Island Baking Company is such a nice little bakery with a lot of options to fulfill your sweet tooth! I decided to stop by while in the area and I ordered a cream cheese brownie, peanut butter cookie and cream cheese croissant to share amongst my family. Prices are actually fair I was expecting things to be more pricey just because of the area so that was awesome. Customer service was great and I didn't feel rushed to hurry/order. Besides the baked goods they also have a coffee menu and I really which I would've just gotten coffee here instead of going over to a different spot after. Overall: 100% worth checking out if you're in the area and you're a bakery lover like myself.

Yelp
Wow. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. Totally recommend this place and will/would come back next time we are on Vashon.

Yelp
I have a love relationship with ham and cheese croissants. I'm from California, and they are done with the ham and cheese baked inside. It is hard to find made that way outside of Cali. We were on Vashon Island and saw this place while driving. The coffee and bakery sign caught my eye. You walk inside to a very inviting shop with so much to look at. The employee was very friendly and helpful. Now, let's talk about the croissants. Not only did they have ham and cheese croissants, but they were made stuffed the right way to make them. They had sausage croissants, spinach, and philly cheesesteak. We ordered 1 of each; why not. I was so pleasantly surprised to find out they were warm. The cabinet they are kept in keeps them warm; absolute brilliance. Nothing I have said so far means anything because what I am about to tell you is the reason for the 5 stars. These croissants were the BEST, most amazing, flaky, crispy, warm, yummy croissants I have ever tasted in my LIFE. You think you have had a good croissant in life, yeah, I thought that too until Saturday. Will I hop on the ferry, cross waters, and drive to get these again? Uh yes, what time do you close, lol. I don't even remember what else we bought because I was so fixated on my flaky happiness.

Yelp
Oh our way off the island back home we stopped by this bakery. Pastries are very delicious , however if you are ordering a number of things, be sure to double check your order before you leave. We ordered about 7 items and as we were paying the cashier joked ooops almost gave you an extra pastry and took one out of our bag. Later when we got home (only visiting the island) we noticed that she shorted us because she thought a similar shaped pastry was a duplicate (I had ordered a maple bar and a cinnamon twist- they are the same shape). Big bummer as the maple bars are $5 (we were charged) and it was the only pastry my husband had ordered. We also ordered drinks, americano and a dirty London fog. Americano was fine, but they forgot the vanilla in my London Fog. Shop is very aesthetically pleasing , it is small so you feel a bit rushed as people are waiting in line. I highly recommend the mushroom Swiss croissant- delicious.

Yelp
I am still dreaming about their mushroom croissant, and maple pecan bacon croissant. Their mushroom croissants are flaky, PACKED with mushrooms, and delicious. Their maple pecan bacon croissant is my favourite!; My husband and I initially bought 1, split in half, gobbled up the pastry, and went back to buy another maple pecan bacon croissant! I am still dreaming about it. I can say with confidence this is one of the best bakery! I also tried their oatmeal pecan (I think) bar with marionberry filling. It is very rich so it took us 2 days to finish, but the rich flavour of butter blending in with a bit tart and sweet flavour of marionberry was so yummy! The service was friendly, and efficient; there is a little bar attached to the window where you can stand and eat your pastries. I almost wished the bakery was a little bigger with tables and chairs. Their coffee was also good, but it was overshadowed by the pastries I cannot wait to come back here!

Yelp
Amazing!! Amazing pastries and the best spinach feta croissant ever!!!' Highly recommended! Smells amazing when you enter the bakery!

Yelp
Cute and convenient spot! Super yummy and lots of options. Chocolate crinkle cookies tasted like brownie batter and a little too sweet but still enjoyed it

Yelp
3.5 stars! This cute little bakery is on the main drag on Vashon Island. They have a HUGE selection of pastries to choose from - it's a little overwhelming. They had scones, maple bars, bear claws, muffins, croissants, brownies, and all kinds of cookies. They also had a lot of vegan or gluten free options, if you care about that. I eventually ordered a slice of almond bundt cake, which happened to be vegan, and also a peach iced tea. The cashier who helped me with my order was very friendly, and she was chatting with customers while I was browsing the pastry display, so the place definitely had a nice vibe. The bakery also offers coffee beverages and tea, but it was just too hot outside for a hot drink. The small interior has some cool art on the walls and a cute scrabble magnet wall for you to make a message. There's no space inside to eat, but there are benches outside, or do what I did and go across the street to the little park where the Saturday farmers market was happening. The bundt cake was just ok - there wasn't much flavor to it, but I guess that's because it was vegan. I would go back to try one of their non-vegan pastries.

Yelp
Love this bakery, and it was wonderful visiting during our time on Vashon. You can peek back and see that everything is freshly made. We tried a variety of items, and everything was delicious and nothing disappointed. Staff and service were also lovely. Will definitely be back the next time. We are visiting Vashon.

Yelp
This was one of three bakery stops on Vashon Island back on 3/8/20 before the initial pandemic shut down. Vashon Island Baking Company on that particular visit nearly a year ago wasn't bad but it was rather underwhelming. Customer service was bland. Pastry case looked somewhat interesting, but I only got a pain au chocolat as a benchmark. Powdered sugar covered, so I sampled it seated on their outdoor bench. It was just okay. Posting this on 2/27/21...still remember that powdered sugar, baker's equivalent to glitter.

Stop A.

Yelp
Food is bland and dry, coffee was not mixed correctly. Felt rushed by the person working there to make my choices.

Mrs. P.

Yelp
Very good pastries. Espresso drinks are solid, but the drip coffee is only okay. I would really like to hang out in this establishment, but there is no place to sit. If there were better ambience I would probably shop more often. A major disappointment is they don't bake bread (as I think their name might suggest!).

Gr T.

Yelp
Would give 0 stars if I could. Frosting was way too sweet, cake tasted old. The worker and the lady who was acting like she was the owner both got very rude and dismissive when I tried to bring this to their attention. The owner especially was rude and acted very entitled. Like I should have felt privileged to be in her "bakery" eating her stale "treats" Terrible food and a terrible experience. I definitely do not recommend this place. I will never go back.

Ron S.

Yelp
I ordered a 14" triple layer cake for my wife's surprise birthday party. Big cake. The cake looked beautiful. The buttercream frosting was good, it was a white vanilla cake, white frosting with chocolate writing on it. Beautiful. Thing was is the cake was as dry as sawdust. I don't know how they could have let that cake out of the bakery. They must have known that they over baked it and that it was dry. When I went to the bakery I told them that the cake was beautiful but that it was so so dry. Like sawdust. The woman I spoke with told me she would tell the boss. That's it. I have a feeling the woman I talked to probably baked the cake. I won't be ordering any other things from them.

Sam M.

Yelp
Coffee was so so, and the pastries were horrible... The ANTI Police rhetoric on the front window of the business is offputting to say the least. ANTIFA Baking Company is more like it... No thanks on second trip in there, and if Id of been paying attention and notice it on the way in I wouldn't have went to start with

Yelp
Update to rave about when my friends were visiting from out of town last week: we hit the Bakery three days in a row for, wait for it: an entire chocolate torte (amazing), ate that, so had to get a strawberry-rhubarb pie the next day (amazing), ate THAT, so needed a peach pie the next (you guessed it, amazing). Also, friends all liked the morning pastries so much that we ended up going back even more days so they could "try them all." (I explained it was impossible to try them all, there are so many good options, but bless them, they tried.) I love this place so much. Thank you for being in business.

Laney S.

Yelp
Darling tiny coffee & pastry shop on your left as you drive into town. I ordered a mocha, ham & cheese croissant, and apple fritter to take home. The mocha was outstanding!! Both baked goods were unfortunately disappointing. The ham and cheese croissant was nicely kept warm with a crispy cheese top but the inside was simply odd, the ham seemed like it was chopped or ground which gave it a weird texture. I would not buy this again. The fritter was simply a swing and a miss. I should have known by its pancake flat appearance. I was hoping it was secretly delicious. It was not. It was like the dough was uncooked/unleavened. Something seriously wrong with that process. The bottom was almost gooey (not in a good way). Lots of cinnamon or cinnamon sugar on top and chopped apple, but no rise or goodness that you would expect in an apple fritter.

Yelp
Visiting the island, and stopped by this place. Picked up: ham and cheese croissants, a quiche Lorraine, mochi cake, lemon bar, strawberry shortbread bar, and some cookies. Oh. My. Goodness. Everything was delicious. The quiche was the creamiest quiche we've ever had. And the bars are totally scrumptious.
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
Super cute storefront on the Main Street of Vashon is a busy little bakery. Both sweet and savory selections it wasn't hard to pick several goodies from the case. The maple bars with flaky croissant style dough were unique and delicious. Chocolate slater Carmel bar was enjoyed by my husband and we also brought a quiche slice to go which has not yet been enjoyed. I didn't get one but the hotdog baked I. The same croissant dough looked intriguing. Anyway by the local foot traffic, this is a true local go to.

Yelp
First time visiting this friendly island. Stopped at the baking company after getting off the ferry. Very nice staff. Best London Fog I've had in a long time. Blueberry bunt cake was ok, very moist like it was soaked in something, not sure if we'd get it again. Snickerdoodles cookies were a hit! During a time of Covid they were very clean and wore masks and limited customers. Thank you!
google avatar

Derrick L.

Yelp
Every little town needs its own bakery. Vashon Island Baking Company is a great bakery for the main street area of Vashon Island. They offer both savory and sweet baked goods and regardless of the option you select, you will not be disappointed. Some of the options are typical, some of them are original recipes. Many of the pastries are gluten free and vegan friendly. This place does offer the typical espresso/coffee options which is definitely a plus. There are no dine-in option, even before Covid restrictions, there just is not enough interior space to lounge inside. There are some benches outside in which patrons can enjoy their tasty pastries. Parking is little to nonexistent so customers will probably have to park a few blocks down the street then walk to this business. This bakery is located around other business in the area, so you will be able to walk and talk as you hop around other establishments. Staff is friendly and patient, I enjoyed their service as I asked multiple questions and/or reviewed their menu options. A definite must go if you visiting Vashon Island!
google avatar

Anita N.

Yelp
A must visit on Vashon! They have multiple flavors encased in croissants! Yum!!! You can have a sandwich (burger, ham & cheese) or sweet treats like maple bacon pecan! They offer croissant loaves and so much more! They are located on the north end of town and across from the Farmers' Market is across the street on Saturdays!!! Go! Indulge! It's worth it!!
google avatar

Cindy A.

Yelp
I am just sitting down to my second, and sadly my last vegan morning glory muffin from the Vashon Island baking Company. This muffin is a chewy delight! For whatever reason over the past six months I have been seeking morning glory muffins. I think the Vashon Island baking Company has truly nailed it, and it's vegan to boot! They just might save the planet with this little muffin. My kids and I make sure we visit the Vashon Island baking Company every time we visit my family on Vashon. Common purchases are the salted caramel brownie, The vegan chocolate chip peanut butter brownie and if you're lucky enough to visit when they have it, fluffer-nutter cake! This cake is to incredible (if you are a chocolate peanut butter lover), it might be my favorite cake of all time. Sometimes when I walk away with a piece of this, I have to vacuum my car because I can't wait to eat it anywhere else. The vegan morning glory muffins and any other delectable I have mentioned is a must try! I always stock up on extra vegan morning glory muffins as they are good for 2 to 3 days after purchase.

Yelp
Absolutely adore this place from the pastries and food to the coffee to the cute merchant they sell with their logo!! Seriously stop here and support whether you're visiting or not! It's so yummy!!

Yelp
This is the cutest little bakery on Vashon Island. Arrived around 9 AM on a Saturday morning and the display cases were full of delicious freshly baked goods which was amazing. The smells were divine and it was really hard for me to choose what to get. I decided to go with a chocolate croissant and a latte. I was lucky that it wasn't super busy when I arrived but there were definitely a lot of people in and out during my time there. The space inside is small but has a lovely cottage type feel. I was able to take a seat and watch the farmer market set up across the way while I ate my treat and had my coffee. The croissant itself was delicious, with the right amount of chocolate ratio which I loved. The latte on the other hand wasn't memorable but I have to remember that this is a bakery store and not really a coffee shop. The staff are definitely a bit quirky but that's all part of the experience I guess. I will definitely be back on my next trip to this island, everything on the display case was just so good! Parking shouldn't be too difficult to find in the neighboring streets and I found that it was good value for money given the freshly prepared goods.
google avatar

Al S.

Yelp
One word - bakery. The place had nothing enticing or even someone to help get into the pesky glass cases. Even with a call out I decided I had seen enough, especially as nothing really caught my eye. Easy enough to park on the street and try for yourself though.
google avatar

Jboogie L.

Yelp
I tried the gluten free cherry scone here. It wasn't bad. I was hoping to find my Arizmendi scone here but was probably 70% close. Coffee was a bit weak.

Kevin M.

Yelp
This place was quite a delight! I had a black americano coffee which was excellent with the warm chocolate chip cookie. I made a big stink about how I'm a tough critique of peanut butter cookies. Well this place makes a great pb cookie!! I'll be back for lunch to try the hot dog or cheese steak!

P W.

Yelp
Delicious cookies and croissants! Go early .. they sell out of some of their more popular items.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now and literally every time the person working is rude. Very clear that this is the last place on the world they wanna be. Not helpful, always get annoyed and roll their eyes when I order a chai tea as if it's very difficult to make, and the pastries are just ok. I gave it one last shot today as I know sometimes people just have bad days, but clearly that's not the case here. Note to owner- make sure your team knows what good customer service is. It's important.
google avatar

Derek S.

Yelp
Croissant dog is my Go To and always a gluten-free option to bring home to my wife. Great local coffee. I dig it!
google avatar

Shelley O.

Yelp
Amazing little bakery in the heart of downtown Vashon. We enjoyed the quiche so much that we went back twice. Great coffee and chocolate croissants and the staff was super nice!!
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
While the chocolate chip and chocolate crackle cookies were only OK, those chocolate caramel bars were absolutely solid. Tasty, moist, not too rich, caramel without bleeding caramel. I don't have a good feel for pricing in Vashon, but these treats felt a little on the high end. Otherwise, good times!
google avatar

Marcy M.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this bakery/coffee shop! They have a very large assortment of pastries that looked SO good and tasted as good as they looked! You absolutely have to stop here whether you are a local or just visiting the island. The prices for the quality are fantastic too! Only $3.40 for a 12 oz double shot latte that was very good! You can't beat that anywhere.
google avatar

Ankit A.

Yelp
One word - amazing! We were planning to go to Snapdragon bakery but it was closed early and luckily we went to this bakery. I had Mochi cake, caramel cake, chocolate brownie and peanut butter cookie. All were delicious. The best one was chocolate brownie
google avatar

Hillary H.

Yelp
I got married last September and VICB not only took care of our wedding cake, but also an assortment of pastries and coffee for the next day. Our guests raved about everything! Their coffee and pastries are delicious and fresh, but we had multiple guests tell us at the reception that this was the best wedding cake they've ever had. (We had a 3-tiered Devil's Food cake with raspberry jam and raspberry buttercream filling.) Samantha was super flexible and easy to work with and I'd 100% recommend for any wedding/special event on or off of Vashon.
google avatar

Bryan L.

Yelp
Great little bakery. My wife is sensitive to gluten, and they make the best gluten-free chocolate torte! Other pastries are good as well!

Mengqian Vera X.

Yelp
The bakery has interesting twists of traditional baked goods. The stuff is super friendly. Coconut scone (2/5): very dry, coconut flavor isn't strong. Coconut mocha cake (4/5): the cake is quite tense and chewy. The coconut strips fit quite well with the cake. Chocolate almond croissant (4/5): The texture is fluffy and crispy. But the almond flavor is overwhelming.
google avatar

Bradley S.

Yelp
Everything was stale. Got the chocolate crinkle cookie, chocolate salted caramel bar, maple bar, and chocolate chip cookie. The chocolate was so dried out and chalky and the caramel had little flavor. Everything was dry and hard we couldn't even eat it. Seems to me like they bake things once a week. Will not return.
