New Orleans’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings for 2021 - Eater New Orleans

"The return of Vaucresson Sausage Co. to New Orleans’s Seventh Ward has been anticipated for some time now, with generations of Vaucressons working to build a multi-faceted business in the company’s former address. The century-old butcher is one of the original and most popular Jazz Fest food vendors, and the family’s Vaucresson’s Creole Cafe in the 1960s was a rare Black-owned business in the French Quarter at the time. Now, third-generation proprietor Vance Vaucresson has confirmed that plans for a restaurant and meat market are back on track for late 2021 (in addition to affordable-rate apartments the property will house). With help from Chase, the revival of Vaucresson’s Creole Cafe will feature the peppery sausage its famous for, as well as hogs head cheese, chaurice, and other meats served in gumbo, po’boys, and atop grits." - Clair Lorell

Just got back from vacay and NEEDED something my grandma would’ve made. I got the smothered okra and it was delicious ! I wish it was seasoned more. However the cornbread was amazing. Best cornbread i’ve ever had.

It was an honor to try this place out. It came well recommended and it was worth it. Not a long line or wait for your meal. Very friendly staff, food was served quickly and came out hot. While there I had the privilege of meeting the owners who were so kind. Vince is a jokester and had us laughing. I look forward to coming back for another visit soon

Julie is absolutely amazing! The food was DELICIOUS and the service was just as great. I love that she supports local black owned businesses. Make sure you try the Oh Sweet Lemon lemonade, it was sooooooo good! We stopped by to grab a quick bite and left with more than that! Can’t wait to get my copy of her new cookbook! Will definitely return on my next visit to New Orleans! ⚜️

One of my go to spots. The food and service is always excellent- patience, smiles and kindness. My family loves the smothered okra, cabbage, hot sausage and cornbread. The hog's head cheese is also really good. Highly recommended, it is a true taste of New Orleans.

Amazing black owned deli. Best sausages, outstanding shrimps and onion rings (and I am an onion rings fan!). Highly recommend!

Google
I had been looking forward all week to visiting and they did not disappoint. Terrific food, excellent customer service and a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy with friends/family. All the fare is made in-house and cooked when ordered. My Sample Sausage platter came with my choice of sauces and sausages, grilled peppers & onion. By nature, I am a generous person but not today. So very tender--sooo good. It created a palate party and the sauces were uniquely tasty. The onion rings, boudin ball and my cousin's fish platter were hearty. Can you say, "to-go" plate please? The exceptional customer service begins the moment you walk in the door until departure. Clean surfaces from ceiling to floor (that is important to me). Monitors showed Jazz musicians displaying their craft. They also package and sell assortment of items. It is a locally black-owned establishment with a long, rich history. Short ride from central city. Locals and visitors should not miss a chance to experience what Vaucresson has to offer.

During our Halloween trip to New Orleans, we crafted a list of must-try local foods. After a thorough Yelp search, we stumbled upon this gem that exceeded our expectations. From the flavorful sausage sampler platter to the delightful boudin balls, it was an absolute delight. Highly recommended.

Yelp
The Hot sausage po'boy is my favorite but the Alligator sausage and hog head cheese also are in my top favorites. If you want to give yourself a big treat, go to Vaucresson's.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about Vaucresson's Sausage Factory Restaurant! This is hands down the best restaurant food I've had in a long time. Coming from a Black-owned business serving authentic Creole cuisine right here in New Orleans, the experience is nothing short of extraordinary. The flavors are bold, the ingredients are fresh, and every bite feels like a celebration of our culture and traditions. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this spot is a must-visit for anyone craving the true taste of New Orleans. Support this gem--you won't regret it!

Yelp
Today we, absolutely had a fantastic experience at Vaucresson's Creole Cafe! We both thoroughly enjoyed the delicious Catfish with the delectable sides of Mac & Cheese, Potato Salad, and Peas. The fact that I cleaned my plate is a true testament to how satisfying and flavorful the meal was to my tastebuds. Everyone tells me I'm picky. Both Ms. Julie and Mr. Vance Vaucresson, provided such warm and attentive customer service as well. Sampling the traditional Hog Head Cheese was a nostalgic treat, taking you back to your childhood. And the Jerked Chicken Sausages I purchased to try later was an enticing addition to my culinary adventure. It's clear to me that that Vaucresson's Creole Cafe is a gem in the 7th Ward, offering authentic Creole cuisine and exceptional hospitality. Positive experiences like this truly capture the essence of New Orleans' rich food culture and community. Thank you very much and I will definitely be a repeat customer!

Yelp
First red flag is that this restaurant does not have a clear menu on line. You arrive and you immediately have to pay for whatever they decide to cook that day. PLEASE BEWARE THAT YOU ALSO ARE GIVEN A PROMPT TO PRE-PAY A TIP BEFORE YOU RECEIVE THE SERVICE. I made the terrible mistake of adding a tip with my order (guilt because it's black-owned, optimnism I guess). BUT NEVER AGAIN. TIPS ARE TO BE FOR SERVICES RECEIVED! (That means after the fact.) Well, you can guess what happened later. The service was terrible and disorganized. It felt like they'd never done this before. Food came out real late and at two different times for the two of us. The gumbo was very salty and the fish was not well cooked. Limited menu. Limited quality. Limited hours. Limited service. There are so many other choices of where to spend your money for food in New Orleans. They ain't right.

Morgan A.

Yelp
When we arrived, we had high hopes. Woman at the counter was kind and helpful. We ordered the gumbo and catfish plate that comes with mac and cheese, peas, and potato salad. Drinks took long to get to the table, but gumbo came shortly after. Gumbo was good. Food took another 30 minutes to get to the table. Fish was fried great but no flavor. Mac and cheese was not mac and cheese. Potato salad was pretty good. I wouldn't come back just because the price and wait was not worth the food I got. The service was good, ambiance was great, but the wait and food, not so much. While we were waiting for our meal, people were coming and making to go orders, and they seemed to get their food faster. That might be a better option.

Yelp
The "new" space is great, maybe a bit sparse on the decor but the food and service are great. Everyone is so friendly! You'll still see them at all the festivals - every Jazz Fest since inception! - but now you can come here for a meal, or to take home some sausages to cook. I honestly bring these sausages up to my relatives in Wisconsin - sausage capital of the U.S.! They're that good and everyone raves about the quality, texture, flavor, etc. So glad to be able to get great food from great local folks whenever you want. Try all the sauces too!

Yelp
I am writing this sitting outside of the restaurant. This place is special!! I came back because of the gumbo; this time I brought a consultant and ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. We got the plates and everything was cold so they heated up the plate and it still was not heated through. We were given some delicious hot fries to compensate for our meals which was perfectly fine with that compensation and I let my server know that I will be back. Well, the owner stopped us as we were leaving to let me know that the meals were comped! I let her know that we were fine paying for the meals but she insisted on comping them. This kind of service is what has been lacking in the industry for a while!! As I told my server today is not the last time I will be coming to the restaurant. Great service and hospitality!!!

Yelp
My first time at Vaucressons shop since reopening. Very clean, fresh and welcoming. When you walk through the door. I went in for some sausage to take home but they also had options where they had sandwiches and hot plates available as well. When you walk in they greet you like your family and behind the counter they are actively putting fresh sausage in the casing real time to package which you can also buy fresh by the pound. Behind that they're cooking hot food to go out it's the perfect combination of smells. While You're trying to figure out what you want whether to dine in or get Hot food or sausage to go. They constantly put out samples to let you taste the different sausage options they have. I end up getting 2 lb of hot sausage and a small potato salad which was delicious by the way and the sausage was banging when you fried. It's not too greasy in the pan like pattons and the flavor is Bliss. I'll definitely return the spot

Yelp
The gumbo is one of the best I the city. I also tree the fish plate with Mac and cheese. I don't recommend the Mac and cheese. It was oily and no cheese.

Yelp
We had been waiting patiently for the cafe to open. We'd pass by every few months to check on it. I'm excited to say that it's finally open. Woo-hoo! My dad invited me to lunch and said the cafe is open, let's check it out. Owners Julie and Vance Vaucresson welcomed us with open arms, typical of New Orleans culture. The cafe is bright, airy and beautiful. The white painted walls and ceiling, reclaimed wood wainscoting, and polished concrete floors set it off nicely. The inside is small and intimate. Somewhat reminiscent of Pontilly Coffee, I can easily envision the young and old hanging out here to study, have a meeting, chill, or, you know, eat. We ordered the hot sausage sandwich and sausage sampler platter. The food was fresh and delicious. The sampler platter included hot sausage, chicken sausage, and jerk sausage. My favorite was the jerk, followed by the chicken. I'm not the biggest fan of spicy food, so the hot sausage took third place. The sausages were accompanied by three sauces: mango sauce, green onion sauce, and creole mustard. The sausages, mustards and sauces are all made in house. And the prices were reasonable. They're planning to sell the mustards and sauces by the bottle early next year, and I can't wait. They also have merch, t-shirts and aprons that would make great gifts. There are many articles on the internet about their story. Like many post-Katrina experiences, it's an inspiring, heartwarming story of resilience and sticktoitiveness. Google Vaucresson sausage in your spare time, and then stop by the cafe and show some love.

Yelp
Tries their jerk chicken sausage sandwich at jazz fest. May have been one of the best things I ate the entire weekend

Yelp
The GUMBO keeps me coming back!!! The rue is homemade. It is filled with lots of ingredients, including crabs! The taste is consistent. Which is more than can be said of restaurants post covid. The hogshead cheese is nice and mild with a hint of heat is very good also. The restaurant is clean. Bathrooms clean. Casual eatery.

Mike P.

Yelp
The stewed chicken today was incredible as was the gumbo. The cornbread was like eating cake. If you like creole hot sausage, this is the best! Try it, you'll like it!

Yelp
They are open for lunch Tue-Sat(11a-3p). They have a really good Creole Chicken Sausage (below) and homemade mustards. Also love the bean dip. It's a cool spot to enjoy lunch alone or with friends.. Welcome back Julie Frederick Vaucresson Vaucresson Sausage Co.

Yelp
Nice clean place with a clean aesthetics. I had the creole burger with fries. It had hot sausage with a beef patty. It was good just sloppy. Will be going back!

Yelp
I do not visit New Orleans without stopping by Vaucresson! Authentic New Orleans food backed by family tradition. It feels like you are visiting the owners' home. I highly recommend it.

George P.

Yelp
After receiving a ton of recommendations, I had to try the hot sausage poboy from Vaucresson Sausage Company Guaranteed that you won't be disappointed... The proprietor, Vance Vaucresson is a third generation butcher that makes all of his sausages and boudins and creole sauces in-house The hot sausage poboy was made with pork sausage that was primarily pork meat which gave the sausage a very distinct texture. The french bread was Leidenheimer toasted and buttered. Presentation, well see for yourself They also have a variety of creole sauces. I used Creole Mustard and and Creole Green Onion on mine As far as Hot Sausage Po-boys go, it's gonna be hard to beat Vaucresson's ** As a little lagniappe, I tried the Chicken Boudin Balls with Steens Sweet Cane Syrup

Yelp
Heard about Vaucresson's from a coworker and wanted to try it out. Vaucresson's is a Black Owned spot for hot sausage. Everything is made Fresh. They grind and package the sausage right in front of you. Food was very good Service was great, they treat you like family. Ambiance was chill with some smooth R&B in the background. I got the creole burger which was really good. The hot sausage was too! (I took a link off the burger to try it alone) I'll definitely be going back for more!

Yelp
I had an opportunity to meet Vance and his wife when I decided to stop in on a random Thursday afternoon. The food is amazing and the hospitality is out of this world. Vance is a wealth of knowledge on New Orleans culture and his wife is so upbeat and creative with all her Creole mustard varieties. This is a must stop for me.

Yelp
I always love when you walk into a business and you're treated well. Every employee made it a point to speak to me. It's that type of treatment that makes you love supporting them. Now let's talk about the food. This is a great neighborhood deli that also has meal specials daily. Today I tried crawfish sausage and onion rings. The onion rings were HUGE. The food was delicious and I'll be back. I'll try the Cajun chicken sausage next time!

Lauren W.

Yelp
very good, very clean establishment ... the hot sausage was some of the best/spicy I've ever had. Can't wait for the hogs head cheese.

Yelp
I recently visited the New Orleanians area from the DMV area to attend a Mardi Gras Brunch with my high school classmates. They were looking for alligator sausage which wasn't available at the time and decided they would try another place. I noticed the catfish po'boys on the menu and knew immediately that there was no way I was leaving without one. I had an opportunity to speak with Vance and some of the other customers. The atmosphere was first class southern hospitality all the way. I ordered one to go and came back the very next day. Vance made sure our catfish platters and catfish po'boys sandwich were served fresh off the grill. I called that going above and beyond to make sure the customer was satisfied. Thanks Vance, for taking the time to talk with us, serving us with a smile and giving us something to tell others about. If you're in the New Orleans area, planning to visit or presently visiting the area, you want to taste some down-home New Orleans style food that will make you keep coming back for more, check out Vance at Vaucresson Sausage. Tell him Sher-baby sent you. You'll be glad you did. And one more thing, you can thank me later. I am bound to be back any day now.

Yelp
Delicious! Crawfish sausage was light and super tasty. Try the bean dip appetizer... so good! Great vibes and service!

Terry W.

Yelp
Bought some Creole hot sausage today and went home and cooked it. It was so good and fresh. We couldn't believe how good it was. A little taste of heaven.

Elena E.

Yelp
Best homemade sausage in the city. Hot sausage was lean, spiced just right. Sooo good on French, Bunny slice bread or next to a bowl of grits or red beans. Other flavors are jerk chicken, green onion, crawfish and creole chicken. While catching up with Vance had to get a hot sausage poboy to go. I'll miss home delivery but so happy for the brick and mortar. Nice place to get a meal.

Lauren D.

Yelp
Hot sausage poboy is amazing!!! Service is great!!! Julie and Vance are awesome! Can't wait to come back!
