Where to Eat Fish and Chips in Chicago

"Over in Jefferson Park, Galvin’s is the place to visit for fried fish. The kitchen serves beer-battered Atlantic cod, as well as Shephard’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, and traditional Irish breakfast." - Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

Ok ok so this restaurant is the best!!! Like I mean it the nachos it have chees and Steak The drink are good The people who serve food are so nice even let me play puzzles and Jenga, where you stack little pieces of wood they had tic-tac-toe in a lot of records and trophies so you should eat here they gave me free chips and chocolate I ate the chocolate so the chocolate might not be in the picture

Google
Definitely some of the better food in the neighborhood. Removing one star because the chicken on the fried chicken sandwich was about as thin as a piece of paper. Lesson learned, I won't get that again. Otherwise, the menu is pretty vast and they have more than just your typical burger and fries. It can get pretty busy and the bartenders serve the tables as well, so be prepared and patient if you walk in and it's packed.

Great place to grab a quick bite to eat and a nice tall glass of Guinness. This is a classic Irish bar in a quiet neighborhood on the far northwest side of Chicago. They have a great party room on the second floor that is available for reservation.. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.

Google
Hit up Vaughan’s Pub & Grill for dinner on a Friday—got the fish & chips and an Irish Caesar salad, plus a pint of Guinness. Fish was crispy but one piece was a bit underdone, salad was solid and fresh. Staff were chill, cozy NW‑side pub vibe, kitchen was a touch slow. A solid spot to grab a pint and pub grub — I’ll be back to crush those cheese curds next time.

Google
Love this pub, love the people, but good lord- get some extra help! Whenever we stop in during the week, it’s one server, totally swamped. We had to wait 15 minutes for our menus and then 20 for the check on our last visit. We want to keep coming and to keep bringing friends and family, but we are really hoping the service/staffing issue is remedied.

Google
Nice cozy pub, food was good and staff were friendly. Would stop in again when in the area.

Not sure how I lived in Chicago my whole life and never went to Vaughans pub on NW highway near Austin. Really fun Irish pub. The staff worked so hard to get your order going. The specialty drinks were fun and the French onion soup was delish. Will definitely come again. Very busy on a Friday but that was OK as we got a seat and enjoyed the atmosphere.

I have always had a good experience here. Service with a smile. Good people, good food. Check out the specials too. One of my favorites is the French onion soup. Thicker Liquor Approved. Cheers.

Yelp
Vaughan's pub is awesome! I have been going here for many years. Have had such nice memories with friends and family here. Anne, Diane, Sinead, and the whole crew do an awesome job. The food is always great. They have a good rewards program too. If you like authentic Irish food highly recommend Vaughan's pub! The chicken wings and steak sandwiches are some of the best in the city. I am obsessed with their cheeseburger, sliders and french fries too. The chicken sandwich and cheeseburgers are great also. Honestly, I have never had a bad meal here. My favorite chicken wing flavor is the curry dipped in blue cheese. If I had a dying wish meal that would be included. All their chicken wing flavors are great! Highly recommend Vaughan's pub. Always good weekly specials and beer on tap!

Yelp
Very very poor service, some items are definitely not worth ordering; staff needs to have better service skills, and ownership to take a hard look at how the bartender and servers treat customers that are not in this neighborhood pub more frequently- there is a very big difference on how they regulars and non- regulars! Don't go there on a Friday night, unless you like being snubbed and disappointed with the non- professional service that is exhibited by a lack of empathy towards senior citizens. Our family has been patronizing Vaughan's for over 30 years, and I'm appalled by the BS that the female staff put on customers just because they might feel that it's okay!

Yelp
Great pub. Lacking only live music. Fresh food, ridiculously large portion size, and well prepared. Friendly people and nice vibe.

Yelp
Great service, good selection of taps. Not noisy. Authentic decor. There's a party room upstairs. Smaller than the Emerald, downtown. (Same owners)

Yelp
A friendly, well-run neighborhood bar and grill. I only wish that they had a smaller version of their burgers, maybe 1/3 pound? Anyhow, I had the Chirish and it was excellent. And, as befits a good Irish pub, the head on the Guinness was perfect.

Yelp
Hearty food that'll stick to your ribs. I'd say Vaughan's does capture the vibe of being in an Irish pub/restaurant in, well, in Ireland. We typically go on Sundays for lunch so it seems to be a more mellow atmosphere than let's say, a Friday night. I've tried a variety of the items off their menu and I would say that my favorites are the fish and chips, the corned beef (full dinner and sandwich) and steak sandwich. Friendly service each and every time and the locals are usually talking about Ireland or going back to Ireland. I've kissed the Blarney Stone so I'd love to do that again. In the meanwhile, I'll come back to Vaughn's and pretend that I'm in Killarney.

Yelp
Went to meet some friends in Vaughans bar on the north west side of Chicago. Diane was the nicest, sweetest and kindest bartender you could meet. The chicken curry was a big hit with my guests. We were truly blessed to have Diane as our bartender and server. She was doing everything herself with her beautiful smile and sunny disposition.

Yelp
Went to meet some friends. The bartender Sinead was the nicest in the city of Chicago. You can't skip the miller lite draft. Sinead is the best of all chicago bartenders.

Stan S.

Yelp
Another great lunch at Vaughan's, great atmosphere , one of the best neighborhood bar and grills Fish and chips were great , service was fast and friendly, Great rewards program Highly recommended for lunch or just to have a drink

Yelp
Living nearby, I pass this place regularly. It's always caught my eye as I perceived it a chill place to grab a bite and have a drink. When the bar began popping up in my social media, I submitted in giving them a shot. The food looked amazing and the influencers really did a good job selling the joint. It's an Irish bar, alright! Actual Irish patrons. Actual Irish barmaid. Irish food items and beer on the menu. Irish insignia throughout, but not in an overwhelming way. I really liked the space: polished wood, glass-stained lamps, really nice booths (the two top booths were really charming and intimate, definitely date worthy for something out of the ordinary). I opted for the bar and my friend and I were first to arrive alongside a couple of regulars. Within minutes the place had several other guests. I knew I was in the right spot! On Tuesday's it's $3 off any burger. I initially wanted to try the Irish breakfast sandwich but couldn't turn away $3 off a burger. To make up for my loss, I got the next best thing to the Irish breakfast sandwich: the Irish sausage in blankets appetizer. Pretty darn good I'd say. I didn't realize the Irish were fond of curry. There definitely was a hint of it in the app. For my meal, I did the Chirish burger: Irish bacon, Irish cheddar, American bacon on brioche. I'd say it's a good starter plate if you're unfamiliar with Irish fare and want to play it safe. The food alone was worth the visit. Our barmaid was lovely really. She seemed to know all her guests (which is why they were all served before my friend and I who actually arrived first lol). I took the experience in stride. But money just doesn't come easy for me, which is why I put such an emphasis on service and it's really quite a bummer when I have to ask for basic things: water refills, another drink order whilst sitting before an empty beer glass for what seemed like forever--a pen for my tab. I sat well over 10 minutes with an open check presenter and a printed tab waiting for her to finish a story about the love lives of her children to other patrons to get a pen to settle the bill. I didn't mind waiting to place my order of beer (I initially wanted a spiked peach ice tea but seeing how slow she was I figured I'd shoot for something off the tap). I didn't mind waiting to place my food order (again, well after everyone else in the joint who arrived after)...To get my water refilled. To ask for my check. But the whole sitting around for a pen to PAY HER was just a turn off and my $10 on $80 was reflective of it. To her defense, she was the only server, busser and runner. Maybe I need to take a hit of weed, or get laid. But I guess I'm just not that chill to wait around to be waited on by someone so nonchalant. I'd love to come back but, would you, after writing such a dismal review?

Yelp
Found the perfect neighborhood spot! Started to come here after my son's soccer practice for dinner and the food is amazing! Diana is so attentive and even though I've been there 3 times, she remembers my son's team, my drink and the dressing I take on my salad! She also remembered that my son does indeed like the onions on his food! Highly recommend!!

EXCELLENT burger (Chirish) and great service at the bar. Taco special was also delicious!

Yelp
Our group of four dined at Vaughan's Pub on Northwest Highway on a lazy Monday evening. My love and I have been to two of its sister locations (Emerald Loop and the dearly departed Monty Gaels) and overall, we had a positive experience here too. The wooden booths are a little tight (cozy?) but the four of us had a good time. There are also a few outdoor tables along the street. One unfortunate thing on this evening was that there was only one server, so she was bustin' her tail doing virtually everything. This led to very slow service, but we did not mind too much since we were celebrating an occasion and catching up on good times. We were even allowed to bring in our own dessert for our gathering, very kind indeed. Still, we did get a bit fatigued at the end since we were in there hanging out for over two hours. We felt bad for our server and tipped her well. The cocktail and beer selections are nice (hello Guinness), and we went through our basket of cheese curds way too quickly. My love really savored the brisket grilled cheese on Texas toast, as she has also enjoyed this yummy sandwich at the other locations. I liked the bangers and mash, a solid and filling Irish plate with Irish sausages, mashed potatoes and baked beans. Try the bottle with the brown sauce (that's what it's called) on the sausages, you will not regret it. The Kickin' Southwest burger had some interesting toppings (jalapeno, "ghost pepper" cheese, chicharron, lots of pickle slices) but seemingly was not too spicy for our friend. Vaughan's Pub also does some decent takeout business. We have also enjoyed mac & cheese and fried pickles from here at a friend's backyard gathering earlier in the year.

Yelp
Always good food and service at Vaughan's!! Love the corned beef, cabbage , mashed potatoes and turnips!!! The place feels like home!

Yelp
I love their carne asada salad, I get it every time. It's a small place with great service but we love to eat there. They also have good specials

Yelp
We live in the area, and keep trying to love this place -- especially when my husband is from Ireland, and we're desperate to find a local. But the food is mediocre, and every time we're there, the 2 women running the show (always on the weekends; been there forever) just don't seem to know what's going on. Why fight for their attention at the bar when the restaurant is only barely half-full? We've been there a handful of times, and wound up walking out tonight when we arrived, sat there for well over 10 minutes, and no one even said hello to you. It breaks my heart not to support local business, especially the ones still struggling post-pandemic, but we won't be back.

Yelp
Very Good Burger !!!!! We had recently smoked brisket nachos with waffles fries it was delicious!!!!!!

Yelp
Hadnt gone in a while so thought i'd give it a go.Pints are still great. Food is ok. Chronically understaffed before and after Covid and was again today ( 1 bartender covering the entire place). Dont go here unless you know one of the bartenders or you'll be waiting awhile. Definitely not the same as it was.

Maryanne P.

Yelp
Food was great - a lot of great choices. Service was outstanding - as always. Will be back again soon.

Daniel R.

Yelp
Awful Awful Awful....Staff was beyond rude...Corned beef was as tough as a shoe didn't taste much better...Mac and cheese was served COLD....had to cut it with a knife....would go back if it was last place open...only have two thumbs to turn down...

Yelp
$19 for Irish breakfast! Two tiny eggs, potatoes from a bag, stale brown bread and it didn't come with Kerry Gold butter. Some American tasteless brand. Pudding was one tiny slice of each. Irish bacon okay, beens okay. Bangers okay. For $10 I expected more.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pub, came here years ago, should come here more often. Right across from the Gladstone Metra, great food, great service. Seriously, stop in, relax, eat and enjoy!

Yelp
Friendly neighborhood pub with great on tap selections and FANTASTIC food and service !!!!

Fantastic food and wonderful service. Plenty of delicious items to find on the menu! Recommend the curry!

Yelp
We were recommended this place when we first moved to the area and we were excited to try it out as it looked like a nice place. We walked in and the bartender/waitress had an Irish accent. With all this, our hopes were high for the food. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations, and I think this was probably the worst food I have ever gotten from a restaurant. I ordered the bangers and mash as it is normally one of my dishes. The bangers were burnt and dried out as if they were sitting out in the open all day. The mash was no better as it was also dry and tasted as it they didn't season or add anything other than potato.

Yelp
All you can eat Fish and chips every Friday!!! Can't beat that! A nice Irish bar with food and ample street parking

Joe W.

Yelp
I just had the most bizarre interaction with these folks. I went in on a Friday night, pleasantly full, got a stool, ordered a beer & fish-n-chips. Beer selection is standard Chicago, chips were fine, fish was VERY good. Got 2nd beer. 2nd beer was plopped, inadvertently, onto my dinner & into my lap. I refused the proffered comp dinner as I was mostly done. I finished the replacement beer. Was then ignored for 30+ minutes, but needed to leave, as aforementioned mishandled beer had soaked into my underwear. Put down a 20 and walked to my car. Was chased out into the snow asking for more money! ("I can't authorize that!" or some crazy BS.) Too bad, as I had initially wanted to ask to bring my club here, would've been ~50 people on a once-a-month basis. Can't do that now. ... Now reading other reviews... f&c is AYCE? Was not made aware of that. ... Anyway, cute place, basically nice people. Bring a towel.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place. This is a neighborhood bar - a real Irish Pub staffed with servers and bartenders from Ireland. The ambiance is very traditional and it was fun to be there. The servers are friendly and strike up conversations with customers. They know their regulars - greeted them by name at the door, and know who is not a regular, chatting us all up to get to know us. It was lunch, so although Guinness on tap sounded great, I only had a coke. The menu items are fairly diverse, but I went simple. I ordered a hamburger with fries. It was served in a traditional American manner -- lettuce, tomato, and onion on a soft bun. The fries were freshly cut by hand, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. My only complaint (?) was there were simply too many of them to eat. Luckily, I was with three others who willingly helped me finish them off. The hamburger - the meat was fresh. I didn't ask what the blend was, but it tasted like it was pure beef. I must have been a half pound. Very good. Great food, great people, great service - what more could you ask?

Yelp
I've got to say, in this day and age great service is nothing to snivel at. Vaughan's Pub's service was great for us tonight. Attentive, kind, timely, and caring. What more could you ask for? Our table got the Fish Tacos, Black & Blue Burger, and Chicken Quesadilla, all very delicious.

Yelp
The wrap waffles fries and cheese curds were on point! So quick and easy to do a pick up! Cheese curds are 100% recommended!!!

Yelp
We love coming here!!!! Ann and Diane are awesome servers. We have come here for years and I can't believe I never wrote a review! We LOVE the wings. I always get curry.... YUM!!! Their turkey burger is awesome too. Always a nice time here!

Yelp
Great family place! Everyone is really nice and offers a comfortable, if a bit cramped experience. The food is great and the staff are very cordial. We eat here regularly.

Yelp
Yay!!!! Yay!!!! Yay!!!!!! My favorite bartender is back!!!!! And she took care of a full bar and several tables!!! Still always..the best Chicken Currey

Michael M.

Yelp
I hope this place has a post covid-rebirth. Nothing on their menu reflects an Irish Bar. My friends ordered the Buffalo chicken wrap with chips and the wrap lacked sauce and seemed like a low budget sysco order. I also had the tavern pizza which was a little worse than $3 frozen jacks. It was very doughy. Lastly the queso dip was clearly store bought tostiotos and microwaved and not made in house. Either way this isn't a Irish bar nor worth your time. They don't take pride in their food

Charlie S.

Yelp
Great food, menu, authentic Irish pub atmosphere and staff. Be sure to try the curry sauce.

Yelp
Excellent food! Fish fry was delicious... Service was awesome drinks too can't wait to go back

Yelp
I definitely liked the commitment to the Irish pub theme. From the decorations, to the food on the menu, to the music, it helped set the stage for a good time. There must've been a pre-booked party there too because there were balloons and it seemed like many had been enjoying themselves for a while :p drinks were solid, prices were great

Yelp
My wife and I visited the chicken place next door then sat down for a drink outside Vaughn's. The cocktails were amazing. We decided to come back a few days later for another round of drinks and ordered food. I truly expected typical bar food, but I couldn't be more wrong. The food was exceptional to match the drinks. With outside dining it has been a good place to bring the kids as well. The bartender/ waitresses are the best too. I also liked their loyalty program. After only visiting a few times we were given $10 credit.

Yelp
A friend recommended the Friday night AYCE fish and chips a few months ago. It became a relevant recommendation this past Friday when fish and chips was all I could think about. We arrived at 6:50pm and there were 2 big parties ahead of our party of 5. I was getting nervous we wouldn't get a table for a while. Turns out, we were sat within about 15 minutes. We cane with our 5 and 2 year old boys. I was kinda nervous about taking my kids to, you know, a bar. But it's surprisingly family friendly and they have a kids menu. The staff is super friendly and fast! Our waitress even complimented our kids on their behavior and handed out suckers. So nice! We had cheese curds to start and they were amazing. My kids had a cup of cheddar broccoli soup and a plate of bangers and fries. They loved everything. My husband and I had the fish and chips and it was amazing. The fish pieces are a nice size and fried well. Our friend had a burger and said it was very good. We might end up Friday night regulars!

Yelp
Day 3 of sheltered-in order was St Patrick's Day and we ordered delivery from Vaughan's. Of course like everyone else, we had wanted to partake of this day from the comforts of our home and they were overwhelmed. Got a call from the restaurant as one of dishes was sold out and they asked if I was willing to swap out for something else. I could tell they were slammed and in the weeds, but the lady on the phone was so apologetic and kind. This was our first time ordering from them and we were not disappointed. The food was ridiculously delicious and portions were generous! This restaurant is now on our regular rotation list and we are grateful for having them in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Walked in. Walked out. No customer courtesy at all. My girlfriend and I ended up at this spot after the car broke down and AAA had long hours waiting period. We figured why not grab a drink/bite while we waited. NOPE. We stood at the bar close to 15 minutes, it was fairly early in the evening. Not busy. Yet, no one came up to us.

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips. Great beer selection and specials. Outdoor seating is available. They seem pretty receptive to families for lunch and dinner. The staff is terrific. There's a roof, inside. Wtf.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
The beer is great. The food is ok. The French onion soup was about 4.5 stars of 5. Curry wings were about a 3.5. Mac piggy (Mac and cheese with sausage and bacon was around 4 stars And was really thick cheese which we liked. Some of the other bad reviews I read about this place are a little misleading. I thought it was pretty good overall. Also, it's right off a metro drop-off location so that's nice.

Dylan F.

Yelp
Placed a order for pick up with a pick up time of 5:00pm. Stood around for a hour , was provided one update "was working on it". Gave up after a hour and just asked for a refund. Do good business, have integrity, and do the right thing and be honest. Don't waste people's times and be better prepared.

Yelp
Good chill music on weekends, only eaten here once and had wings. Solid bar food from what I've seen.

Yelp
(Edit. The legitimately kind folks here refunded me the entirety of the missing sandwich. That along with the other positive reviews is why three stars instead of one. My experience was probably very rare. I have a feeling this was an off night for these kind folks). Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats from the uncovered dumpster in the alley behind Vaughan's Pub. After finding a coupon for free delivery and 25% off on Grubhub (perhaps a gentle whisper of a clue) for this old Chicago joint I ordered a baked chicken sandwich (because chill out Michael) and Parmesan fries (because I got a baked chicken sandwich!) and when it arrived I opened my dinner box to discover four pieces of cold fried almost meatless chicken and four plain wet French fries. Four. Which to me is actually pretty funny. Just four old wet depressed fries sitting by what was chicken that may have last drawn breath in the Cretaceous period. My kids ordered the sausage flatbread and they got a soggy rectangle of bread with old tomatoes and some undercooked cheese on it. My son looked at it and actually called it a "dreadful impression of pizza". Which I gotta give him a bit of credit for. I also ordered the giant pretzel with pub cheese for everyone and got instead fossilized pretzelish matter with a side of cold baked beans instead of cheese. The cold baked beans was a stroke of almost evil genius. Yum. Cold baked beans and remicrowaved pretzel. A Manson family favorite. The one upside was that the folks at Vaughn's (at least the person on the phone) were (all judgmental zingers only funny to me aside) very very nice when I called and they took a whole (cue sad drumroll backed up by even sadder trombone) 7 bucks off the order (which also to their credit I didn't discover the pizza and pretzel issues until after my phone call about the fried chicken mixup and had decided that calling back probably would be an exercise in Faustian futility). My suspicion given the professional and kind person on the other end of the line is that they have someone in the kitchen who is from outer space and has never seen human food before. The combinations of starches and proteins are confusing to his zinc based brain. Too much humans! Too weird!! Does not compute!!! Syntax error!!!! The other possibility is that it was almost closing time for online orders and they just didn't care... but that's no fun. I'm sticking with the alien thing. I'll benefit the old well worn doubt here and chalk this up to a rough night for the folks at Vaughan's because judging by the online reviews most folks seem to dig it. It's dreadfully hard to mess up pizza and baked chicken sandwiches but perhaps what showed up to my house on a rainy October night was someone's grad-school thesis Dadaist art project. I don't know. Complaining online is such a sad and depressing act...so you know...I got that going for me. 2 stars because the nice person on the phone reminded me of my Mom and you can't get mad at your Momma.

Yelp
Great place, all you can eat fish fry was wonderful, crispy flaky huge pieces. Service was delightful, fast attentive, the tomato bisque with brown bread was amazing the soup was so flavorful definitely not Campbell's.

Yelp
Great little bar with an awesome beer selection to go with it. Easy street parking, which is so rare these days (at least in the city). And lastly, I can't say enough about the bar food. Yum! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here on and off for a few years now. We haven't come since the start of the pandemic. This is mostly because the waitress who usually serves us, Anne, is usually rude and passive aggressive. We decided to give the pub another try. This time, we waited longer than necessary for our check. She looked at our table several times while we were waiting, directly into my sisters eyes, and still didn't come over. She then made a sarcastic comment to my sister when she went over to the counter to pay (we got tired of waiting for her to care enough to come over) saying "according to our system you haven't been here since 2019. You know we've been here this whole time." We aren't obligated to eat at this pub, and it's super unprofessional to treat someone poorly because they didn't come to your establishment during a financially difficult period. We will not be coming back until Anne learns to treat customers with respect.
