Velo Rouge Cafe - Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The bike theme runs deep at this Richmond cafe—but you don’t need to ride up to this all-day spot on two wheels to enjoy it. There are espresso drinks and pastries for a quick refuel before a walk in Golden Gate Park, plus great breakfast plates and wraps filled with fried chicken or hummus and vegetables. The sleeper hit is their tuna melt, a saucy and slightly sweet panini that’s designed to be taken away and eaten during a sunny lunch. Food Rundown photo credit: Julia Chen The Ullrich Tuna Melt Charred grill marks, salty-sweet tuna salad, and a swipe of dijon—Velo Rouge keeps it classic with their tuna melt, and the commitment to simplicity pays off. This sandwich is fantastic, and it also comes with a generous side salad. Merckx Wrap The components of this wrap—fried chicken, red onion, and mixed greens—are great on their own, but it's overdressed and ends up tasting mostly like honey mustard." - Julia Chen

Where To Grab Picnic Food Near Golden Gate Park

"Velo Rouge Cafe is a great brunch spot in the Richmond that serves breakfast burritos, bagels, and avocado toast. After 10:30am, the menu expands to include soups, salads, and sandwiches like tuna melts, BLTs, and turkey-ham clubs. Whatever you get, pair it with a cup of coffee or iced tea and enjoy it on the short walk to the park - the Arguello Street entrance is just a block away." - lani conway

After a visit to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park we were seeking a casual lunch spot. We drove the short distance to Velo Rouge Care close by, just a block off Fulton Street (on McCallister Street). We entered the small-ish shop and read the menu (on the wall). There are painting and pictures of bicycles throughout the cafe. - other patrons were there enjoying a hot beverage or a bite to eat. My wife ordered the Eggs Benedict - traditional but with Acadaco, served with house potatoes (or a green salad). I went with the Coppi Turkey Sandwich. In a short period of time the server brought the food to us as we sat on a bar facing the street. My sandwich was tasty - Turkey with Jack Cheese, Cranberry Sauce and Spinach. It was served with a substantial side salad (which was enough for a meal, honestly). Both of us enjoyed our meal and said we would definitely return here. Prices were reasonable for The City and its location is close enough to Golden Gate Park. We did find parking just across from the Cafe on McCallister. They’re open for breakfast and lunch only (closing at 2 or 3PM).

Google
Ordered my favorite Salmon Egg Benedict for the new year lunch! So yummy and delicious! Feeling so grateful to enjoy my lunch time with friends at this cozy and clean place. Thanks for the staff providing this awesome food and the great service. It really makes my first day in 2024!

Google
Oh my god, what a find! Delicious breakfast & hearty portions. We stuffed ourselves more than we should have & oh boy oh boy - what a post-vaccine brunch did it make! We ordered the burrito, egg breakfast & banana pancakes - I blame the vaccine, they make you hungry!! Utterly delicious, highly recommend. Sit outside & soak in the sun on a nice chilly, sunny SF spring day.

Google
Wonderful atmosphere in a great location. Excellent and eclectic breakfast menu. Service is somewhat lacking (I stood for five minutes at the counter without so much a "hello I'll be right with you") and the prices are quite high.

Google
Loved the atmosphere, outdoor seating, latte, and scone. Best latte in town, to date. Had the spinach scramble; it was not only yummy, it was so much that I took half home for the next day!

Google
Burned my mouth on latte. In reply to cafe response. I know what over heated milk is and this was so hot it burned my mouth and if I swallowed and not spit it out immediately, I would be going to the hospital.

Google
very chill cafe and it gives me a European-style atmosphere. The staff was very nice and the food portion was pretty good, definitely a good place to chill and enjoy the time.

Google
Hey. This one is worth a try! The care and attention to detail! Sweet! That combined with the portion size makes this place well worth the time for breakfast. I'm giving it my coveted "Clean Plate Award!"

Yelp
Had lunch at this cafe close to Golden Gate Park after going for a walk around it. If you like pretty small cafes with simple menus, this is one. The Velo Rouge has a name that sounds fancy, but it's actually pretty casual or at least feels that way. Bad thing is it's only open for breakfast and lunch. Prices are also not cheap but they're not crazy though. After walking around the park we were hungry. It's not much more of a walk to get here from the museums. The only thing is go early enough because they are only open at breakfast and lunch unfortunately. Has a pretty typical menu for a cafe. There's lighter options. It's about $12 for a sandwich or basic entree. We each got the Veggie Wrap. Pretty much about the only good vegan choice. This has avocados, black beans, hummus, mixed greens, mushrooms, and red onions, all on a toasted spinach tortilla, and served with chips and salsa. Great food even with the limited operating hours. It's got coffee and sandwiches. There's mostly a deli type of menu but there's something for vegetarians.

Yelp
This is a perfectly nice corner coffee shop. I had a good spinach + feta omelette and cup of coffee, and I got out of there for a little over $20. Not bad!

Yelp
Really cute cafe with a bicycle theme, great tasting food, good portion sizes, and friendly staff - Ambiance: great lighting and cozy vibe - Decor: Lots of detailed decor around with posters and bicycle pictures. Event he tv was playing bicycle documentaries - Portion size: bigger portion sizes than I expected - Food was all great, the eggs Benedict was perfectly cooked with the yolk covering the tasty salmon when cut. - The eggs in the McCallister scrambled were well done and the muffin toast was perfectly toasted - the fruit bowl had a lot more fruit than expected and were all ripe - Service: friendly and nice staff!

Yelp
Only had a matcha latte, but it was smooth and creamy though a bit too sweet for me; I would have preferred about 25% less sweet. The barista was very nice and made my drink quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Fast and friendly service and generous amounts of great food. Stopped by here with several students and we all enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

Yelp
Great tuna sandwich. Fun vibe and very friendly service. A little tough to park in this neighborhood, but that's SF.

Akash S.

Yelp
Good food, convenient location, really provided exactly what I needed on a typical chilly morning Overall, highly recommend

Melineh O.

Yelp
There was a RAT inside the restaurant just roaming around. It was absolutely disgusting. The staff did nothing at all, just stared at us while saying "there is a RAT right there!" I have been coming to this restaurant for 1 year already and have never seen a rat. It has been dirty inside and outside however the food seemed okay. It would have been nice to be offered a refund or anything but the staff and no response or reaction. It was as if the rats are always there! I will never be returning to this restaurant again.

Yelp
Got the Lox bagel and a cold brew with vanilla and hazelnut syrup. The bagel was okay. It had too much cream cheese and not too much salmon. The coffee was super tasty tho! I would Come back and try their tuna melt probably! That looked super delicious as well
google avatar

Yelp
Seems like once of the few food spots open early(ish) on a Saturday morning. I went around 9am and it was bustling with people already. A good amount of seating inside and out. The area is peaceful- would recommend grabbing some food and sitting outside! I had a matcha latte, which was a bit sweet for my taste (there was a note on the menu that it was sweet, I just ignored it so that's on me).

Yelp
Recently moved close to The Velo Rouge Cafe and I'm so happy I found them! Great vibes, great food, and great coffee. Looking forward to coming here many more times! The breakfast burrito is just like everyone else has said - it's HUGE! Very filling and very flavorful.

Angie M.

Yelp
Just moved to SF and this is absolutely my fave spot to go for brunch! Food is yummy! Service is amazing and the people you meet here are just so welcoming! And Great vibe too!
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
Sheesh. Been coming here for years. Breakfast burrito with bacon. You'll be full for Breakfast, and lunch. Everything fresh, a true heavy weight burrito. The cheese is perfectly melted, and the bacon nice and crisp inside. Call in your order and pick it up to go! There is a loading zone on the same block so its easy to find a 2 minute parking spot while picking up.

Yelp
The young man behind the counter was not friendly or courteous from the beginning. I am on. Very limited diet due to an upcoming surgery. I ordered banana pancakes they looked nice with fresh strawberries. There were no bananas on it, or in it. I asked the guy I placed the order with and he said "that's because you didn't order banana". Then he went to the kitchen and came back and said there are bananas in it. Anyway no bananas. So I brought it back to the counter and he then told me they were puréed. I told him no they weren't good. All he said was OK and put the plate in the bin. Didn't offer me anything else. I told my friends and they told me to go get something. I ordered half order of French toast and he was going to charge me. I brought it up and he told me. I ordered banana pancakes, I got banana pancakes and just because I didn't like them, he wasn't going to give me something for free". I will never go back.

Yelp
A good friend of mine lives in this neighborhood and this is one of his regular spots. We were here for brunch a couple of days ago. It is a small spot. There are pictures and artwork of a red bicycle as the name suggests. I got the chicken salad which was very good. Knocking off 1 star since it is a little grimy and could use a deep clean overall. This is a nice neighborhood spot but I don't see myself traveling too far to come here.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Wonderful cappuccinos! Sara is the best barista in the Richmond! Half a block from Golden Gate Park. Quiet spot to open your laptop!

Yelp
I just love this place. Especially on a rainy weekend morning. The vibes are immaculate, super cozy, bike content all over walls. Their breakfast burrito SLAPS so hard, I think about it a lot. Personally, I like the turkey. Yummyyyy. Coffee is good too.

Sheen W.

Yelp
I've been a loyal Velo Rouge customer for almost 3 years now. I've come here 1-2 times a week ever since I moved down the block. Unfortunately, they struggle with hiring qualified baristas who understand what good customer service is. I've watched countless baristas come and go (I see a lot of them end up at other nearby cafes). They're usually young students with an attitude. None of them can make a decent cup of coffee, and you rarely feel welcome in the shop. I work from home, and love switching up my work environment by going to Velo Rouge every few days. I've stopped going after consecutive bad experiences in the past month. I had to wait 20 minutes for one cappuccino and a bagel with only 3 other customers in the shop on a Saturday morning. The coffee and bagel were really bad (how do you mess up a bagel with cream cheese??) I'm only writing this review in hopes that the Velo Rouge managers/owners pay close attention to who they're hiring, or at least invest much more time into training their staff. The quality of food and drinks also really needs to go up given such high prices.

Yelp
This is a great place to stop for breakfast, especially if you're biking down Arguello! They have places to lock your bike right outside while you take a break. Their breakfast burrito is MASSIVE. It's really delicious, but keep in mind you can definitely split it between two people!
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
The velo breakfast burrito will go down in history as the best breakfast burrito there is. It's massive and can be split between two people. The ingredients are perfectly distributed throughout. It's a must have! Cafe is cute and located on a corner and makes for a good stop before heading to golden gate park right there.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to visit when I come to the city. The menu is small, but what they do have is very good. Staff is friendly and helpful, they were really great with my son, helping him figure out what juice he wanted for breakfast, and it's just a great neighborhood cafe
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Velo Rouge is a neat little cafe perfect for a bicycle ride pit stop. They have bicycle racks outside and is on Arguello, which is a busy bicycle thoroughfare to the Presidio from Golden Gate Park. You don't even need to lock your bike up because of the seating outside. We had coffee and a breakfast burrito $14. The coffee was not bad. The breakfast burrito was very tasty. Service was fast and friendly. Great job staff at Velo Rouge.
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
The eggs were hot, the breakfast potatoes were stone cold. I appreciated the option of subbing in sourdough for English muffin. The barista/cashier was surly. Add in the high price and it was a full SF breakfast cafe experience! I probably won't be back.

Jack A.

Yelp
The food was very good, the burrito is HUGE, worth the order. Nice quiet music to have a conversation. Considerate staff. A no fuss coffee shop. I wish they were open longer during the week!
google avatar

Isa B.

Yelp
Pretty big portion for the veggie wrap! Not my favorite. Had a strange taste. Mostly just filled with greens and hummus.
google avatar

Georgina E.

Yelp
Seating outside/ order inside. Huge portions: it can feed 2 people. We ordered strawberry French toast, breakfast croissant sandwich, a bowl of fruit, 2 dirty chai teas, and 2 bottles waters. It fed us for brunch and breakfast next day. Great service. Great view outside, people watching at a distance.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Sweetest baristas and delicious cappuccino. Good area to study as well. Love the vibes
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
Hidden Gem in the Inner Richmond! We were struggling to find breakfast burritos in the area and Velo Cafe came in and saved the day. Their breakfast burritos are MASSIVE and could easily be cut in half and saved for later. (I are the whole thing but was starving. The two other ppl I was with didn't finish theirs.) They don't publish it on their menu, but you can add other meats to the breakfast burritos as well (bacon, sausage, etc). They have several tables outside where we ate our breakfast. It started to get busy around 11:30am. We ordered: -2 iced coffees -1 iced dirty chai -1 vegetarian breakfast burrito -1 breakfast burritos with bacon (pictured) -1 breakfast burrito with sausage Highly recommend!

Rae D.

Yelp
My favorite cafe in San Francisco! I recently moved out of the area but I think about the breakfast burritos from here regularly... the lattes are also amazing, I definitely recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
Great ambiance and large portions. Nice little Corner brunch place. Staff were super nice. I would totally come here again!

Yelp
Incredible breakfast, good coffee, and very cute coffee shop vibes. I appreciate the local small town feel of this place.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this old-school great food and excellent coffee joynt in a nice quiet neighborhood so close to GGP and Rossi Park! My friend and I have been there 3 times in the last few days and have been busy telling everyone about it! Parking is tough, but not as tough and danger-ridden as other SF coffee places' neighborhoods. I recommend the Mt Ventoux and a latte, but make sure you ask for it Extra Hot as the real ceramic/earthenware cups can cool a latte off fast! (Velo Rouge----please make sure your latte's are Hot, not just lukewarm). Thanks
google avatar

Ally B.

Yelp
The food was delicious, and the coffee was pretty good, why I'm giving this place a 2 star review is because of the customer service! The girls made comments because I changed my mind from a small to a large drink, wouldn't you want your customer to upgrade their coffee drinks?! The girl at the counter was very rude, doesn't take much to say you're welcome or thank you. if you're looking for a comfortable ambiance I would suggest going elsewhere. Maybe they were having a bad day.

Yelp
Found this lovely gem of a cafe outside Golden Gate Park on the weekend while looking for a place to brunch. Spacious seating and a lovely spread of breakfast options (I got the Coppi sandwich! Husband got the veggie burrito)! Our friends had a three-year old with them, who ate a bunch of the chicken tenders and fries. Street parking only so that is always a chore, but you can probably park at the park and walk/bike your way over. Totally saving this place for when we visit SF again!
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
Such a quaint little cafe right across from Golden Gate Park TIMING: - Came in for brunch around 10:30am on a Saturday and it became busy around 11am FOOD: 1. Breakfast burritos (add sausage + bacon) - Texture: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside - Filling: they do not skimp on avocado, skimped a little on potatoes tho - Sauce: add hot sauce for extra clutch - Meat: the sausage and bacon was needed! - Portion: HUGE! we saved our second half for breafkast the next day - Extra: Came with a side of chips and salsa and it was delicious 2. Coffee was good enough for me! SERVICE - You order at the front and take a seat with your number - Everyone was really quick and helpful WOULD RECOMMEND? - Yes!
google avatar

Sontra H.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of trying a lot of the breakfast items on the menu and all of them were delicious! There's a reason why this place is packed in the weekday mornings and weekends. My favorite breakfast sandwich in SF is from velo rouge, super filling and most importantly not greasy! The friendly staff is also a plus too, I absolutely love coming here
google avatar

Noah B.

Yelp
I'm all for supporting local businesses but my experience at this place has not been positive. It was my first time here. There was a bit of a line (so I was excited because I thought that was a sign of good quality food). Placed my order to go around 10:10am. At 10:45am it was still not ready. I inquired and was told that they prioritize online orders. Excuse-me?! That makes no sense considering that all these delivery apps charge big commissions to restaurants and the tips don't go to the restaurant... I finally got my order. Walked back home to try it (I live 5 mins away) but I'm sorry, the food was so bad I couldn't even eat it. How can you make a bad burrito or scrambled eggs?! The side of potatoes was impossible to eat. Sorry but I'm not going back. Don't understand all the hype around this place. I guess people like bad food...

Zachery D. R.

Yelp
The coffee and ambiance here is great! Weekday mornings the staff tends to be unfriendly. A shame for such a great spot!

Yelp
My idiot brain is what caused me to finally end up at the Velo Rouge Cafe. First of all, love the name. Second, I was always curious about coming here but never made the time. I had an appointment nearby and accidentally showed up an hour early, so I needed to kill time. Velo Rouge was the perfect place to do it. Looks like something pulled out of Haight Ashbury with its decor. I had my coffee already but ordered a breakfast sandwich to go with it as I answered work emails. A little disappointed that WiFi wasn't working but I took it as a sign to disconnect. The breakfast sandwich was tasty. There were lots of options and combinations, but the only right answer for the bread is CROISSANT. Fresh and filling, especially for the price. All the baristas are friendly, and the cafe has a family vibe. The baby sitting next to me and staring at the fruit on my plate might have had something to do with it. Anyways it's nice to know that there's an option for delicious coffee and hot breakfast near my regular appointment place. They seem to have a steady flow of customers. You can find one of the unique seats inside or chill outside with your dog or I suppose by yourself. Check it out!
google avatar

Elise B.

Yelp
This is some of the best coffee I've ever had. The service was fast, the price is reasonable, and the vibe inside is so cozy. My only knock on them is that they close at 2. But regardless, one of my favorite places to get a latte in SF!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I love this place its super chill and every employee is always nice it's a little pricey but portions are big and food is good

Yelp
Lovely and quaint neighborhood cafe. Come here when it's not so busy so you'll get good seating. Food tastes fresh and tasty. Highly recommend the grilled tuna melt sandwich.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast burrito! Every bite was perfectly mixed- great flavor throughout. One of the best I've ever had!!
google avatar

Sky F.

Yelp
When I go to Velo Rouge, I always get the breakfast burrito because it's huge and is quite delicious (pricing is decent). I like that there usually is not a wait and is not too crowded. There's good seating options inside and outside, and they have wifi if you ever need to do work. It is a good place to stop by if conveniently in the area of USF or near the Conservatory of Flowers.
google avatar

Haze L.

Yelp
I stopped here on a whim and ordered their breakfast burrito and ice latte. It was a perfect sunny day, the service was outstanding, food was fresh, what else can you ask for?

Why N.

Yelp
The neighborhood coffee cafe - has been a staple for a long time. However, right now the service is the worst I've seen it and I and my group have been going there for coffee and food for a long time. I've always marveled at how they managed to find energetic employees who add to the vibe and care about quality. Perhaps those don't exist in the post Covid world - can't be true? But the guy they have on the morning shift now it mindlessly terrible, weather it's morning or later. He doesn't have brewed coffee ready in the morning. He mumbles so you can't understand him. He doesn't have any sense of flow or sequence so he might delivery something to your table but then has to go back and get what is missing. But gets distracted along the way. When you can hear him he speaks in partial sentences and is hard to understand. He seems to be elsewhere all the time mentally so basic things like cleaning up mess to promote hygiene etc is inconsistent. He is Incredibly slow at everything. My view is that this is the wrong job for him and he should find something he likes and go. I have also noticed a general unfriendliness fills the place right now, which is not the usual. It's always usually engaging and comfortable. I hope others speak up and let the owners know that they need to pay attention right now. It would be a shame not to right this wonderful ship.
google avatar

Mr G.

Yelp
going to update my review...others have mentioned that something has changed. I agree. I thought the daily drip coffee was a rotating selection of unusual coffees but it is always the same now and always sour. what is this? is it blue bottle? I now opt to get coffee elsewhere when I am in the area.

Yelp
Velo Rouge is a cute cafe near Golden Gate Park, with some great brunch food available. I came here with a friend after a night out, and boy were we relieved by the generous portions and tasty food. Atmosphere - it has a really European vibe with a cute feel. We saw many people studying and eating, with the occasional person coming in for some takeout coffee. The staff is really nice, and the food arrived pretty quickly. Food - my friend got the breakfast sandwich on a croissant, which he said was delicious. I got the breakfast burrito, which was humongous for its price and delicious. It had everything in it, from eggs to cheese to avocado and a side of chips as well. The burrito is really filling, and I could only eat one half before I was full. It creates a great second meal as well. All in all, I definitely recommend this little cafe. You can take a nice walk in Golden Gate Park after as well. Definitely come here if you're around!
