The Best Hotels in Santa Monica, California

"Set inside the historic Waldorf—a landmark originally opened in 1915—this property was formerly a residence for A-listers including Charlie Chaplin, whom the luxurious penthouse suite is named after, and underwent a major renovation in 2021. Updates like the oversized noise-cancelling windows are a major plus, especially considering its location right above the Venice Boardwalk. In the aforementioned Charlie Chaplin suite, relax in a plush king-size bed, watch the sailboats breeze by outside the window, and stargaze through the vintage-style standing telescope at night." - Krista Simmons

Venice V Is Los Angeles’s Coolest New Beachside Hotel | Vogue

"Venice V—a new boutique property perched right upon Venice Beach—adopted the moniker of its area, embodying the bohemian ethos of the neighborhood. Housed in a 1915 building with a history of hosting silent film era stars like Charlie Chaplin and Clara Bow, it has been reimagined by local design team Tima Bell, a principal at Relativity Architects." - Elise Taylor

Venice V Hotel

"Why book? This design-forward beachfront hotel is the perfect outpost to explore the Venice Beach boardwalk, canals, and Abbot Kinney all while staying in chic urban style that the area has become known for. And did we mention there’s a private rooftop? Set the scene Set inside the historic Waldorf, a landmark originally opened in 1915, this newly-remodeled property was formerly a residence for A-listers including Charlie Chaplin, who the luxurious penthouse suite is named after. The space still has the vibe of a creative nomad’s retreat, with three different themes throughout its 30 rooms: the artist, the athlete, and the sun lover. The backstory The latest and greatest offering from Proper Hospitality — which includes the Proper Hotels and Residences and Avalon Hotels brands — Venice V hones in on luxury that reflects the local community. The rooms Though the themes of the rooms vary from boho beach to artist retreat and surf chic, they all have preserved details from the historic building — including the oldest elevator West of the Mississippi. Updates like the oversized noise-cancelling windows are a major plus being situated right above the Venice Boardwalk, and flatscreens offering Apple TV and Aesop bath amenities will come as a welcome touch to international travelers arriving from the nearby LAX airport. In the Charlie Chaplin suite, relax in a plush king size bed and watch the sailboats breeze by outside the window, and stargaze through the vintage style standing telescope at night. Food and drink While there aren’t any internal dining options, the hotel partners with Great White, a locally famous Aussie coffee shop specializing in produce-driven brekkie for in-room delivery. And there are plenty of excellent restaurants within walking distance, too. The neighborhood/area Venice Beach is one of LA’s most iconic enclaves for creatives, packed with galleries, boho boutiques, and incredible restaurants. But we’d be remiss not to mention that the city’s homelessness crisis has hit this area of the beach particularly hard — a reality that you’re bound to encounter in any area of LA — but something worth noting here. The service Service is low key and casual yet attentive, just the right amount of fuss for a laid back Westside vibe. Accessibility Yes. Elevators and walk in showers available. Anything left to mention? Complimentary amenities include beach cruisers, umbrellas, and beach chairs so that you can enjoy a perfect day of sun and sand." - Krista Simmons

Super chill. Very convenient location. Room was small but comfortable. Bathroom was huge. Very very nice shower. It was quiet. Nice and quiet and comfortable. Staff was nice and helpful. They have complimentary beach towels, skateboard, and/or beach cruiser bikes. Ten minutes or less walking to everything you need in Venice.

I wish I could leave it more than five stars and I’ve only been a day here so far. Absolutely fantastic choice in hotels. I lived in Southern California for 17 years and just returned for a visit after being gone for quite some time. I was so jetlagged flying in from Europe, but Gabriel, Nick and (sorry forgot his name but he checked me in) are absolutely spectacular employees. Are they Butler looking snobs like at the fancy hotels, no - but they are professional, informative, and have great personalities to go with it. Bent over backwards, helping me with some deliveries and getting settled. The rooms are absolutely charming. Exposed brick, voltage ceilings, and a lot of space. I stayed on the third floor facing the ocean and quickly was reminded the magic of the Pacific along with the smells and sounds of the craziness of Venice. The old school nature of the lobby and elevator also add to the amazing experience as you don’t feel like you are in some cookie cutter, modern whatever. As for the negative reviews that site Venice, do your homework on the city first as it is certainly not the hotel‘s fault. As I said to the desk staff upon checking in, I’ve missed the flavor of Venice and they retorted so aptly that it is also the spices that save that flavor. Wit like that always makes me laugh and puts me in a good mood upon checking in.

One of the Worst Hotel Experiences of My Life – Stay Away! Our stay at Venice V Hotel was an absolute disaster from start to finish. We booked what was advertised as a PH Bungalow Penthouse with ocean view—but instead, we were given a completely different room with no real ocean view at all. At best, there was a tiny side window where you could barely catch a sliver of the ocean if you strained your neck, but the main “view” was of the ugly building across the street. We specifically reserved a room with a king-size bed, but the bed was nowhere near king size—barely even a queen. To make matters worse, the pillows and blankets were some of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever encountered in a hotel. The photos on Expedia are extremely misleading. They show images of multiple different rooms, giving the false impression that you’re booking a spacious, luxurious suite. In reality, the room we got was cramped and nothing like the pictures. Most reputable hotels show photos of the actual room type you’re booking—not here. For the price we paid, the amenities were a joke. The room didn’t even have a mini fridge—which is absolutely ridiculous for a so-called “penthouse” room. And the customer service? Easily some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. Every request we made was met with a blunt “No, we can’t.” Even the manager was shockingly rude and dismissive. I strongly urge anyone considering this place to *stay far, far away*. Save yourself the money, stress, and dissapointment - —go literally anywhere else.

This was ours first CA experience, and starting here was the best decision. It’s right by the water, our room had an ocean view. Seamless check in and our experience, we had minor room concerns that were resolved quickly. My favorite thing is they have bikes you can use to explore the area, and it was such a highlight of the trip! Highly recommend.

I had an absolutely amazing experience at Venice V Hotel! I stayed in the Penthouse, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The room was beautifully designed, spacious, and had breathtaking views. The service was impeccable—Gabriel was the best! He went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect. The entire staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel truly welcome. The hotel’s location is unbeatable, right in the heart of Venice Beach, with easy access to the boardwalk, restaurants, and attractions. Everything was spotlessly clean, from the rooms to the common areas, making my stay even more enjoyable. I can’t recommend Venice V Hotel enough! If you’re looking for a, comfortable and memorable stay, this is the place. I’ll definitely be coming back!

You can't get closer to the ocean! Everything about this hotel is amazing. The staff, valet, the bikes, the beach chairs/umbrellas...you won't regret it. Our room was unique and clean, with everything we needed. There are a few coffee shops right outside, plus restaurants. Some complain about the $65/day for valet, but it's probably the best feature. Safe and guaranteed parking in Venice Beach beats wasting a lot of time struggling for street parking. You'll see! I would leave 6 stars if I could. Thanks, Venice V.

Where to start?… - Location is awful. The receptionist was trying to present it ( during the check in time) as if it is a hippie, bohem zone. In reality, we saw homeless, many drug dealers day and night, smell of pee everywhere, police twice just one step out of the main door. Infact, the main door is accessible only with access card so it is closed 24 h, I understood later why. It’s not a safe zone definetely. If I was a solo traveller girl / or with girls especially, I’d be scared. Go to Santa Monica side or between Venice beach and Santa monica, it is better, clean and normal people around - Ocean view room was watching the street and hardly see the ocean. Total failure. We had to keep curtains closed cause it was seeing the other building and street. Quite visible. - 30$ per day for amenity was the most ridiculous. They said we can use the bikes and towels. They had only 3 bikes. Seriously. And 3 days whenever we attempted to take it, was never available. Reception said it can be taken for 2.30 hours only but we never had the chance to get any bike, any time. And obviously, we are in holiday. I can’t put alarm for every 2.30 h and live with that anxiety. Come on. - The room and bed was very small for 2 adults. - Price doesn’t really match with performance. I’ll never come back here and never recommend it to anyone.

(Didn’t intend for the review to be this long but I hope it helps) The most seamless hotel experience I’ve ever had…hands down. From start to finish, this hotel exceeded every expectation. I had to call about my reservation a few times before arrival, and each time, someone picked up right away and was incredibly helpful and kind. That level of customer service alone stood out—but it only got better. Check-in? A breeze. (But I do think they keep $100/day deposit, but don’t quote me on that) Parking? A breeze. (But $55 per night for valet) Questions? Answered with a smile every time. The staff was consistently friendly, attentive, and just genuinely great at what they do. The room itself was clean, comfortable, and quiet. Super well insulated, so we hardly heard a thing from outside. And it was literally just steps from the beach. (Don’t get me wrong, some noise did come through but it was manageable) A large group came to visit me during my stay, and the front desk handled it flawlessly. Clear communication, helpful attitude: everything you’d hope for. Even checkout was easy. My car was pulled up and ready to go without me even having to ask. I live in Las Vegas where we see a lot of hospitality, but this experience beat anything I’ve had in my own city. Truly one of the best hotel stays I’ve ever had. With that said, I did read a few of the other reviews and to answer some of the concerns: 1. Yes, the hotel is old. But I personally enjoyed that aspect of it. 2. The elevator is slow. But it’s a vacation, we weren’t in a rush to get anywhere. The extra 3 minutes it took for the elevator was fine. 3. Yes, they have about 7 rooftop bungalows. There is no garuntee on which you will get. You can call and ask for a specific room, and they will do their best to accommodate, but ultimately, in my opinion, every rooftop suite is cute. Each has its unique flair and personality. We could see the beach from one window in our room, and it was fine. They had outdoor seating on the roof where we had drinks and watched the water. 4. There is no room service, because technically there is no restaurant connected to the hotel. BUT they have a service that will deliver to the hotel. There is also a ton of food places right outside the door. 5. They do have about 5 bikes, some beach chairs, and some beach towels for guests, complimentary. 6. Abbott Kinney was about a 7 minute walk. Okay, I’m done.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about our night here. We stayed here after an international flight and had a 16 hour layover. The check in was so easy, right next to the beach, easy to walk to things. They had bikes for rent and a well stocked mini bar. The boxed water was free and our room was lovely!! Exposed brick and a very cool step up into a balcony area. I wish we had thought to take photos. We walked down to Freddy's Tacos and then woke up the next morning and had a great cup of matcha at the place next door - Groundwork Coffee Co. I would come back and stay here again! It made us wish we had an even longer layover.

Yelp
Pictures and real life hotel aren't the same -room is so tiny -no mini fridge -shower head water is so weak pressure -receptionist let us know housekeeper won't clean room everyday , ONLY per request. receptionist didn't mention we would be charged for " cleaning " which it was just get new clean towels and bed made. Sheets , pillow cases weren't new for cleaning. -Venice beach was beautiful but location wasn't so safe. Many homeless. For being a tourists , never been in the area , it's quite scary. If the price was $200 per night , we still wouldn't go back to stay. We did pay too much for very little We might expected too high but from website , it looks so good to be true

Yelp
Beautiful old hotel has an amazing history and it's been renovated to preserve in Venice history yet have modern conveniences. We stayed in the room that has skateboards for a light and on the walls and really cool architecture. The view of the Venice pride, lifeguard tower was really cool as well as a view of the Boardwalk. The staff was amazing and I wish we could have stayed more than two days . It was really nice to be across the street from some wonderful food and cool vendors all around.

Yelp
Hello Yelpers! I wanted to drop a quick note about Venice V Hotel. My boyfriend and I decided to have a quick getaway to the beach last month. We stayed one wonderful night with the Venice V Hotel and loved it! It's beautifully renovated, with a nod to the original design and architecture of the 1930s. It's amazing. The location couldn't be better, literally right on Venice Beach in the middle of everything. The staff was great as well. Since this was our first time away together, I called to specify that I really wanted the partial Oceanview room that was online, the manager told me he'd make a note to make sure we got the room. When we arrived and checked in, they upgraded us to the PH, which was so nice! My boyfriend and I went to lunch, came back, enjoyed the view then watched the sunset, changed and went for a walk before heading to dinner with his friend that was in LA visiting. The next morning we borrowed two bikes (that's included) in the stay, it's first come, first serve so reserve early! We biked to brunch and then checkout the murals, then did a little shopping, before coming back to LA. It was relaxing and fun! I can't wait to go back again. Thank you!

Yelp
Nothing short of an amazing stay. The room was awesome, beautiful, clean, unique, and overall a wonderful stay. It was the perfect get away and I wish we stayed longer. I loved the location and the morning view was breathtaking. Service was amazing and staff was friendly. Felt safe and comfortable!

Yelp
This boutique hotel is a part of the Proper Hotel group (yes, Kelly Wearstler's domain!) and that high quality, unpretentious hospitality. Aesop bathing supplies, feather comforters, fluffy clean towels, Nespresso coffee, boxed water, skateboards, bikes, beach towels, but most remarkably the best ocean views for its price point and coastal location. Surprisingly, Venice boardwalk has cleaned up and this place is a true hidden gem. Lots of good food and live music steps away. My new go to when in town for work. Leave your fake lashes at home and bring your beach hat for some down to earth fun!

Yelp
The staff here treated us so wonderfully and gave us the best room we've ever stayed in. The hotel was clean, beautiful and extremely well located. Our room had the best view of the ocean, it couldn't get better than that! The room was gorgeous, with an amazing hair and skin product brand. Also came equipped with an espresso machine and a smart TV. There was a great rooftop lounge area, and free bikes to ride too! It was so cute and cozy, I could honestly live here forever. We will definitely be back. HIGHLY recommend. I promise it's worth every penny!

Yelp
Great location to enjoy beach side hipster days of Venice. Be entertained by the local transients and treat yourself to some take away across the alley with fish and chips in bed. Love this place. It screams LA

Yelp
It's not too shabby. The telescope is nothing but a prop and is not mechanically sound. The binoculars work but is falling apart. Film reels here are as though they don't exist. The establishment is not smoker friendly when there isn't anything to indicate such. The A/C don't even work. PS if my homegirl is charged for anything that is viewed as anything wrong or what have you, I will consider a lawsuit of some kind.

Yelp
Venice V would have gotten a 5 star if it wasn't for their computer error/glitch that did not find my reservation under a CHASE ULTIMATE REWARD redemption. I believe there's a communication error between 3rd parties and their system. They tried their best to accommodate me, I got a small room first night, but next morning the manager upgraded me to a bigger room after they found the reservation in the back end. By then it was too late, I have to pay out of pocket instead of redeeming points for a free stay. The customer service and manager were very nice about it and I appreciated that. Location was great, close to beaches, shops, stalls, shopping, restaurants. Some harmless transients could be seen at night around the area. The reason I am writing this review is the inconvenience this experience is causing me. I've called Chase for a refund of points since November and I have not gotten it back. This part is on Chase, but it also would not have happened if Venice V would have found my reservation without me cancelling it thru Chase, and now unable to get back my 55k worth of points. The hotel itself was expensive, about $850 for 2 nights. And the first night was spent in a small room with a bed for 3, not exactly how I planned my trip. My suggestion to others is they should call their hotels after redeeming travel points to ensure their booking exists in the system.

Yelp
Stayed here two nights to be close to a wedding location. Had such a lovely stay! Front desk staff (Ismael, Camila) were so friendly. Location is right on the beach, cafes / restaurants / liveliness line the neighboring blocks. Hotel is clean, well-appointed, stylish. Bike and skateboard rental is included in the 'amenities' fee. Better than what you get with built-in charges at other hotels. Be aware that Venice Boardwalk is bumpin' music at most hours of the day, that is part of the fun. Feels like being in another place, even though we are native Angelinos. Enjoying our stay-cation! Happy with this hotel choice.

Yelp
Super cozy, modern amenities and offerings. I stayed for a night and was impressed- I wasn't expecting a ton but there was attention to detail everywhere and 24 hour staff service is great. Easy to use access cards for hotel door. Great for dogs. Also the minibar and snack bar are $$ but worth it. They have bikes and stuff you can use but I didn't make avail of anything.

Yelp
This hotel was great! It's Venice Beach, so you have to expect a lot of movement and noise during the day, but it was never a problem for us. If anything it was entertaining. Every staff member we interacted with was very friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a suite on arrival unexpectedly which was awesome and the room was beautiful and comfortable. Very close to all the action that Venice offers. Would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
Loved the hotel. You have to have a keycard to get into the hotel which I really love cause well it's Venice and it's a nice safety feature. Rooms well very clean and nice. Customer service was really great here too! We will be back again for sure!

Maura J.

Yelp
There are homeless people everywhere- where the hotel is located there is a small picnic table area in front of the main entrance. During the day it's fine but once it gets dark it becomes a place homeless people meet to hangout throughout the night. I did not feel safe entering or editing the hotel after 8pm. I would stay somewhere closer to Santa Monica to be on the safer side and not have to dodge the homeless.

Rick F.

Yelp
we had an ocean front view room, which was absolutely awesome. The location is perfect for wandering around Venice beach, seeing muscle beach, walking down to the Santa Monica pier and people watching. Location cannot be any better. The room is nice, but made better by the view. on top of that the staff there was outstanding to us. Extremely friendly and very accommodating. I would definitely stay there again.

Yelp
The Venice V is a hidden gem. Located in the now dirty, gritty area that is Venice Beach, you walk through a door that feels like a speakeasy to find a pristine eclectic lobby remenicent of the old W hotels when they were in fashion. The front desk clerk was incredibly friendly. As we took the old fashioned looking elevator upstairs we found a mixture of modern convenience, comfortable beds with clean, white linens. The ADA shower and bathroom was impeccable. Not so much of a view, but it was comfortable.

Hunter W.

Yelp
Terrible customer service and 99% sure this place is a scam, they will charge more than what they say and will attempt to steal your money. Wouldn't recommend anyone stay here even if you do end up getting a room. Absolute joke of a business.

Marmar B.

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel two weeks after they were open after remodeling. The place is gorgeous and it has been remodeled wonderfully. The location is perfect if you like Venice beach. If you are not familiar to Venice Beach, do your research. It is a unique place and we love all the eccentric aspect of it. Unfortunately the beauty of the room was not enough for us to love this hotel. There is much to improve. Even though we were there during the time that California was fully open and very few restrictions, the hotel did not offer room service "due to Covid". We were not informed of this during booking or checking in. We have been on a road trip and have stayed in numerous hotels with all amenities, so we didn't even think to ask. Not sure what "due to Covid" meant since the cleaning staff were walking around without masks. We had to call for extra towels and coffee and once it was not delivered hod to go down and chase the cleaning staff around. The hotel needs to update amenities when it comes to stuff like wine glasses or cups. We asked for wine glasses and were given paper cups. What left us most disappointed was after we left. I noticed an extra charge on my card. When I called the hotel, they said it was for the robe. I told the person on the phone that we used one robe during our stay and hung it by the bathroom when we left. I was put on hold, then told that they would adjust the charge but the manager wanted to let me know that the robe is missing. I responded again that I left the robe by the bathroom. The person on the phone said that the cleaning staff said it was not there. After spending $600 a night, it feels very crappy to be accused of stealing a fleece robe! Hopefully with more time and better training, this hotel can rise up to match the beautiful rooms.
