"Maybe it’s just us, but we feel like Vera often gets lost in all the hoopla of the West Loop. Everyone seems to get caught up in the next big restaurant opening here, chef moving there, or Fulton Market District signage that appears out of nowhere. Seriously, what’s up with that sign? We get that Fulton Market District is like Vatican City if the West Loop is Rome, but is a half million dollar sign arced over the street necessary? No offense to the artist involved, but it feels like the type of grandeur entrance reserved for Navy Pier or Wally World. We aren’t into it. We are into Vera though, even if it gets lost in the shuffle. The Spanish style wine bar is cozy and intimate with a great wine list and versatile food menu. Versatile because it caters to a number of needs. Go for snacks and wine in the late afternoon, or make it an all out Friday night meal. You can even go during the week from 8 AM to 3 PM for a serious coffee and tea bar, along with a small cafe menu. All of these things make Vera ideal for lounging and conversation, whether that means catching up with friends or impressing a date. Good news is ambience is half the battle, and Vera will make you seem cooler than you probably are. The food is overall pretty good too. It’s a traditionally inspired Spanish menu, even if not all of the dishes are traditional per se. But we still like to treat an outing here like a trip to Spain. Move slowly from olives and boquerones to charcuterie and cheese before capping things off with a couple more substantive plates. And even then, we like to keep it on the smaller side with options like grilled octopus, shrimp a la plancha, and lamb meatballs. Heartier full size plates are always available, but it’s not a route you have to feel compelled to go. If there was one minor complain it’s that Vera is located directly under the L, which means even though the food caters to relaxing outside, it’s not a good place to do it. Luckily, that’s not much of a problem when you choose to live in a frozen tundra 2/3 of a year. Food Rundown Boquerone Toast Toast with anchovies, chive butter, and trout roe. Nine bucks might be a little hefty for two pieces of toast, but if you’re into anchovies and trout roe, it’s worth it. Tomato Bread You can’t have a Spanish tapas meal without pan con tomate. Get some serrano ham on it too unless you’re going to opt for a larger meat and cheese plate. Queso The aged manchego and Hooks 7 year cheddar are our favorites when available. Cauliflower You need some veggies, so get this cauliflower with green romesco, raisin, and pine nuts. Grilled Octopus Sprinkled with a little olive oil and paprika. Nothing special, but it plays. Shrimp a la Plancha A couple shrimp cooked in olive oil and paprika with a chile vinaigrette. Soak up that sauce with the tomato bread. Lamb Meatballs These babies have a nice little kick to them, which is balanced out nicely with a yogurt and dill sauce. Good stuff." - Sam Faye

Great service. Excellent wine, especially Spanish, and sherry lists. Great small-plate food and desserts. Very good coffee. Did I mention how good the service is? Bacon-wrapped dates and lamb meatballs were standouts.

I'm a regular at Vera. One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and definitely my favorite tapas restaurant. The place is a real gem that has never failed to deliver for me. Our food has always been prepared and served to perfection and I think in all the time I have been going there was only one dish I tried that I didn't find delicious. Add to that a very nice wine selection and extensive sherry list with knowledgeable staff to guide you through it if needed. The space is cozy and while not exactly romantic will certainly suffice for a romantic night out or just a fun night with friends and family. Also the only place in Chicago I know that does a proper paella (they get the all important crunchy rice crust...socarrat...right).

Vera has tapas and an interesting wine menu. There is a nice variety of sherries to try. There are some daily specials, when we went they ran out about 1 hour after they opened, so planning on their part was not good. The service was ok, the food was good, but nothing special. If you go, do so for the wines.

Always stellar food and drink. Wonderful rustic tapas that comfort you and wines that fill you up with joy. Exceptional standards and standout new fare on the menu. Seasonal food of high quality ingredients; thoughtful and friendly service.

I'm a regular at this wonderful place. I'm not normally a fan of tapas served in the US, but Vera serves perfectly portioned innovative plates made from scratch with quality ingredients. The menu changes so often that it's hard to say what's the best, but I always love their perfect deviled eggs and savory pintxos. They are also experts on sherry, which is under-appreciated, and will help you find one that you like.

Wine by the glass is wonderful. We tried both a red and white. The special of baby turnips was so tasty and seasonal. Grilled octopus was not at all chewy, the charred effect was great.

Despite being essentially under the Green Line, Vera has a calm, quiet ambiance, althoug it was early in the evening. Had a few of the small dishes, the kale salad and bacon wrapped dates were standouts. Good tapas, but a very different low-key atmosphere compared to Iberico or Cafe Ba Ba Reeba if you are looking for something a bit more subdued.

Love this cozy spot. Kale salad is to die for and the octopus is the most tender I've ever had. Great wines, great service. This is a staple for me.
