11 Charlotte Bakeries Serving Up Outstanding Baked Goods

"The list would be amiss without the OG baked good, bread, specifically Verdant’s tangy sourdough, nutty sesame, sprouted spelt, and caraway rye loaves which fly off the shelves of the Oakhurst neighborhood storefront and the many metaphorical shelves of local farmers markets. Walking up to Jaymin McAffrey and Tanner Fink’s quaint Verdant counter is a front-row peek into a kitchen of dough rolling and baguette toasting. These loaves, acting as a complementary vehicle for cheese, jam, and olive oil, are many of Charlotte’s beloved restaurants’ best-kept secret. The kneading and proofing is a labor of love for this crew that has a steady stake at the Matthews Farmers Market, offers walk-up and subscriptions, and donates leftovers to nearby shelters and compost centers." - Kayleigh Ruller

Google
Their sourdough is incredible, with a rich tang that stands out. Orders are taken right at the door, so you get a clear view of the amazing craft the team puts into every item. There is no sit down space, but they do offer a slicer if you want your loaf sliced ahead of time. I am also a huge fan of their english muffins and their soft, buttery brioche dinner rolls. Everything here tastes wonderful.

Been coming here for over a year but they knocked the chocolate croissants today out of the park. They sell them during the week now. Crispy, flaky, buttery, and a bit rustic. The butter and chocolate flavors stood out whereas some croissants you get taste mostly like bread. And two bars of chocolate inside!! The proper way! Recommend their country loaves and ciabatta as well. Fantastic sourdough and great people.

Google
This is hands down the best bakery in clt. I was there a little later in the day for my birthday and the two guys working were so charismatic and friendly! We got a chocolate croissant and a toast. Amazing. I’m convinced there’s nothing bad on the menu.

Went for the first time last week. Ordered two loaves of bread and a package of English muffins. Here’s my takeaway- 1. Drive slowly when getting close, this place is tucked away in the back. 2. Get the English muffins. 3. The bread is great- get it sliced THIN. Great crunch when toasted. 4. Get the English muffins.

Google
So... We love sourdough bread. We're new to Charlotte but couldn't find any good, wholesome stuff in the grocery stores. Then we found Verdant! Stopped by and got a loaf and English muffins and they were ridiculously delicious! I'm now on a $30/month subscription for one fresh made loaf a week. That's a great deal altho 1 loaf might not be enough :)

Google
Easily the best bread in Charlotte. They have exceptional variety and the bread is incredibly fresh. It’s well worth a trip at least once per week

The breads I got here were so so good. We got an oat bread and a baguette - both were fabulous! Absolutely recommend.

Google
Pictured first is the country loaf. Verdant Bread is better than I could have imagined. They are my favorite bread bakery in Charlotte hands down. Pictured second is the gluten free loaf, $15. Doughy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Very heavy, probably weighs 5 pounds! I was worries about it being so dense but the taste is great. Best gluten free bread I have ever had!

Yelp
Love, love, LOVE this bakery. I've been looking for good bread in Charlotte for what seems like forever. I finally found this little gem right on my route to work. The bread is awesome - pricey, but worth it imho. And the folks that work there are so friendly and helpful. 5 stars...10 stars...ALL THE STARS!

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic bread! We tore into a loaf of olive bread and a baguette before we even left the store. Epic. Don't miss this!

Yelp
So glad to have these guys in the neighborhood. Been desperately looking for a good baguette in Charlotte and the one at Verdant is super solid and a really great price. Always have to tear off an end and sneak a bite on the way home. Not only is the bread excellent but the staff is super nice and everyone working there seems to really enjoy it and it comes through in their product. Check them out and support this local business

Yelp
I see them a lot at different farmers markets, but I always got there too late to try a bagel. They sometimes sell out of bagels in less than an hour. We got to the Uptown Farmers market just after 8 when it opened, so we stopped by and got an everything bagel. We brought it home to toast it and add cream cheese. The bread of the bagel was definitely a good bread and the seasoning was great. The type of bread they use taste more like a wheat bread and isn't my personal preference for a bagel. I'd definitely be interested in trying their regular breads. We don't really eat much bread, but if we need a loaf, I'd try theirs.

Yelp
Bread was delish!! We got a baguette. Definitely recommend this place to the locals if they don't already know. We would definitely come here weekly if we lived in Charlotte

Yelp
I just found this place on my map and stopped in to get some English muffins and came out with an enormous rosemary focaccia as well. No more getting these things at the grocery store. The bread is amazing and so fresh. Great local spot. I'll be back!

Yelp
First, delicious! Second, lots of sour dough, good for gluten intolerance. Third, (but maybe should be first) talented bakers, who clearly love their craft. Friendly, too.

Yelp
i first stumbled upon verdant bread at the matthews farmers market and happily bought a baguette, then my mind was blown when i got home to try it. i definitely couldn't wait to have another one, so i was ecstatic to find out that their brick-and-mortar is 5 minutes away from me when you walk in, there isn't really anywhere to go since the counter's right at the door. it's pretty neat how you can see where everything is made from the counter! what i had: sourdough baguette - 5/5 // i've had a lot of bread in my life, so i was shocked at how amazing their baguette was. i don't really know how to explain it - all of the different textures & flavor tasted so fresh! i can definitely tell they're made with love. i also enjoyed the energy of the people who have helped me so far at both the market and their brick-and-mortar. looking forward to try their country loaf, whole wheat pullman loaf and other goodies one day since i'll definitely be back!

This place is a great hidden gem! The bread is amazing and the staff is so friendly! I can't believe it took me so long to find it. Best bread in Charlotte!
