12 Delicious Places to Get Golden Brown Empanadas in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Angelenos have enjoyed Cuban classics like tender ropa vieja and juicy garlic chicken at Versailles since it opened its first location back in 1979. Their empanadas make the perfect start to a meal here and come fried until dark brown with a crackly shell. Bite through the flakey crust to find a chunky beef filling that’s cooked in a sofrito with tons of onion flavor." - Sylvio Martins

I’m not Cuban but Cuban food is comfort food for me as I had a best friend that was Cuban during my youth. His mother made such tasty food! I think many would agree that Versailles delivers great home style food! I had the Breaded Chicken Steak which comes with tasty plantains and rice and beans. They serve you well and everything tastes awesome! I also had a Materva soft drink. On another visit I had a garlicky chicken steak which was superbly delicious! The plates are very well served and the price is right! You can’t go wrong with Versailles! Service is great! I love Versailles. They have an adjacent parking lot which usually isn’t full and that’s amazing for this part of town!

Google
We have been dining at Versailles for many years. Their "famoso" garlic chicken is one of my favorite dishes anywhere. The chicken itself is consistently plump and juicy, with a portion larger than most restaurants serve, much larger than any other chicken outlets. And the garlic sauce is the best! The dinner comes with the most delicious fried plantains, black beans and an ample serving of rice. Other dishes served are also excellent, but I admit that I come there for the garlic chicken. The atmosphere at Versailles is nice, and the staff friendly. I totally recommend Versailles!

Google
The stewed ox tails and chicken empanadas are to die for!! I’m a frequent flyer! The staff are amazing as well.

We were here during dinner time, the waiting time is pretty short. We ordered 4 dishes, the two plates were very big, we had to take half the portion home. I didn't really like tamales, it tasted weird to me. The service is pretty no frills, not exceptional but not bad neither.

Google
So yummy! Generous portions. I like this location more than the Venice. I don’t know why. It has a better flavor - more juicy and saucy. The garlic chicken. With rice and plantains and beans. So excellent. Very happy ! I order it to pick up/ eat at home. I can get 2-3 meals from it. If I make my own rice lol.

Google
My food was delicious and hot. We didn’t have to wait long for our delicious meal 🥘 I forgot to get a photo of my sisters Oxtails. The Restaurant was clean and not to busy. Thankfully because normally it’s crowded. This Restaurant has been a staple in the community forever. And it’s Delicious. The bathroom was clean and smelled very fresh. My waiter was extremely nice and checked on us multiple times Thanks Jose B. We will definitely be back. Thanks Versailles it was delicious.

Google
Authentic Cuban food. Excellent flavors, try the avacado onion salad and the shrimp in yellow rice. Anything you order is delicious. Their Cuban coffee and desserts are perfect to end the meal. Good for family gatherings.

Google
First and foremost i am from Miami Florida and have visited countless of cuban restaurants including the ORIGINAL Versailles in Calle Ocho, Little Havana and this was by far the worst representation of cuban food I’ve ever had. The food lacked flavor. I ordered a fried snapper what they brought to me was an over cooked/fried fish that was black in color and fried in old oil. It smelled in the inside of a non fresh fish, almost a spoiled smell, no flavor, no salt, just a plain old fish fried in old oil!!! I also ordered The yellow rice; It was not yellow, it was orange and dry. Unbelievable i sent them both back, i will not visit them ever. I then ordered the palomilla steak with onions instead and they drenched it in pure vinegar! It had No flavor at all!! On a positive note, The service was good, the servers were very nice, no complaints with that but the food is AWFUL!!

Yelp
We were driving down La Cienega In Beverly Hills when we drove by Versailles and decided to have dinner. I haven't been here in years so it was a good change to have some Cuban food. This particular location is small with very little parking in the lot shared by other stores. Luckily we found an open meter right in front on a Saturday night. When We walked in, the staff was very friendly. We went around 6pm so it was a good number of groups in there but not too crowded yet. The Mexico vs Jamaica soccer game was on and the Latin music was playing in the background. Our waiter Jorge was very nice. He brought us our bread and water. We ordered mojitos which were better than the ones we had at the Cuban spots in Miami! I ordered the Garlic Chicken and my bf ordered the Vaca Frita (Sauteed Shredded Flank Steak). We also order the chicken and beef empanadas. Everything we ordered was delicious and very filling. The beef empanada was so good! I also loved the flavor of my garlic chicken that came with rice, beans, and plantains. The steak was also good and very flavorful. I'm glad we decided to go to Versailles, it's definitely a good choice when you're hungry and want something good, filling, and fresh!

Yelp
Everyone loves Versailles. I guess I love it in theory more than in practice? I'm always excited to go.. my husband and I love Cuban food. The service is good. Ambiance is okay. I'm just never all that excited when I see my food. I no longer order the garlic chicken for this reason. I am still trying new things there but the pork may be where it's at for me. But the plantains are OFF THE HOOK. So good. Go and Enjoy!

Yelp
Versailles has been a staple restaurant in my household and is one of my favorite spots for Cuban food! I don't know many restaurants that offer Cuban food like this establishment, which makes it unique/special to me. Located in LA, the parking can be pretty hectic. Their parking lot is extremely small and shared amongst other businesses in the vicinity, and during peak hours it's basically full. Sometimes you have to go to the street for parking, which can also be tricky at times. In terms of service it can definitely be a hit or miss for me. There are instances when the servers are all so friendly and attentive to us, while there are other when they ignore me and forget my food. I'm deducting a star here as I've had various experiences with their service from all the times I've visited. The restaurant gives off very cozy vibes and is warm and inviting. You can hear the kitchen staff laughing and having a good time as they prepare your delicious meal, which makes everything more friendly! For the food, I always order their chicken and beef empanadas to start off, followed by their famous garlic chicken. Their empanadas always hit the spot, as the edges are perfectly crispy while the filling is a perfect harmony of savory and juicy. One empanada per person is more than enough as an appetizer, but my family and I always order a couple and share between us! Their famous garlic chicken is what always gets my family to come back. It's served with fresh onions, black beans, and white rice topped with their famous lemon garlic sauce. The roasted chicken is never too dry/tough, and it really soaks in all of the juices of their garlic sauce. The onions cuts into the heaviness of the meal and the rice definitely balances it all out with a blank slate in the background. It's one of my favorite meals, and it's always a treat to come back! Overall, this is one of my favorite restaurants to visit when I'm in LA, and I hope you take the time to check it out too!

Yelp
Very solid Cuban food. So-so service. Had the lechon asado which we liked. Avocado salad was good but overpriced

Yelp
Food is delicious. Service is great! Music is wonderful! You have to try #16 whichis My favorite dish. The chicken marinaded with lemon. It's taste sour and perfect with rice.
google avatar

Kezia S.

Yelp
Such delicious food. We love the chicken and oxtail. We can't eat it often, but every once in a while because of the oil. The natural oil definitely made it so flavorful. Service is dependable. It truly depends on who you get.

Yelp
Nice quick and easy brunch spot. Visited on a random weekday to grab some sandwiches for lunch. We have visited the Venice location, but it was our first time in this shop. This space is a little bit smaller and feels a little bit more fast casual. Might go to here is the Cubano, and my wife got a steak sandwich. Both were really tasty. The bread really makes this sandwich. We also love the bread bowl that comes before the meal, seriously they know how to do bread. It wasn't super crowded, so the staff was attentive. Would definitely recommend for a quick and easy lunch.
google avatar

Lovelyn M.

Yelp
Don't fill up on the complimentary bread slices although it was nothing but garlicky and buttery deliciousness! The servers were welcoming and friendly, and the pollo famoso was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. They gave a generous amount of platanos.
google avatar

Cindy N.

Yelp
Such a solid Cuban spot in Culver City area! I got their famous half chicken and it was so delicious! It came with a generous serving of rice and beans and also onions to garnish the chicken. They also give you garlic bread for free to start which I always love. I highly recommend! The quality of the food was amazing, the service was very attentive and the price is great! Huge servings.

Alison k.

Yelp
Great food, fast service, and everyone was very friendly. Vibes were great and the chicken was very tender and flavorful! Also great deal!
google avatar

Carl B.

Yelp
Never a bad meal at the La Cienega location. Love the garlic chicken, but everything is delicious!

Yelp
MOLD IN THE SHRIMP!!! As soon as I took my first bite of shrimp I knew something was off and that's when my sister found the mold in the shrimp. So disgusting. Check your food before serving it to people!!!!!
google avatar

Haeran C.

Yelp
I used to come here a lot back in the day, and it's still as good as I remember it. I usually get the garlic chicken or the sirloin steak with onions. I love the onions so much. The flavor of the sauce is amazing. The plantains are better than anywhere else I've been. The portion sizes are generous. As good as ever, but without the long waits they used to have.

Krystal C.

Yelp
Food was amazing as always as well as the service. I love that the tables are always clean and the music is always playing for a good vibe. I could live without the tv playing, that almost threw off the vibe but luckily it was muted. I was the only customer in there and my server was attentive and professional.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me just start by saying I LOVE Cuban food! Was my first time trying this spot and I damn near ate the plate that my order came out on lol. I tried the Ropa de viejo (favorite of mine) and it was tender, well seasoned and had just the right amount of veggies and sauce. The entire meal was pretty good and very satisfying. Gotta shoutout the sandwich I tried as well! The Bisteck sandwich was delicious and it came with some really good fries. The mango smoothie was creamy and mildly sweet. Loved it. It's a quaint, small restaurant that has that mom N' pop feel. The staff were friendly, the music was good and the establishment was clean and has its own little section in the parking lot. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Today was my birthday and we have been wanting to try this place out....@ 7:45 pm we ordered 2 plates of PICADILLO (seasoned ground beef) with white rice, black beans and plantains (sweet fried bananas) OVERWHELMED by the vast amount of salt in the very liquified "ground beef" I was only able to handle two more small bites of the "ground beef" When asked we told the waiter that the chef EMPTIED the salt shaker into our watery ground beef and it is NOT edible" He smiled and left We even spoke in Spanish I am sure he noticed that we drank THREE full glasses of water in the ONE hour that we were there We paid over $50 for our two plates It was a terrible FIRST experience I have had two full glasses of milk to alleviate the heartburn and indigestion I still feel and it is NOW 11:30pm SPANISH VERSION: Ayer fue mi cumpleaños y queriamos comer comida Cubana Solo quiero volver a decir que el PICADILLO que pedimos estaba DEMASIADO SALADO y NO se podia comer En la hora que estuvimos nos tomamos TRES vasos de agua completos Eran las 8 de la noche y Domingo y por esa razón pagué los $50 por comida que estaba aguada y DEMASIADO sabor a sal (se lo dije al que nos sirvio DOS veces pero solo me dio una sonrisa de disculpa ) En la casa me tomé DOS vazos llenos de leche por la indigestión que tenia Voy a hablar con un manager para dejarselo saber que la experiencia de cumpleaños estaba malisima

Yelp
Great chicken dish the sauce is amazing love this place can't wait to go back I keep going back for the same dish I love this place real Cuban food
google avatar

Talia F.

Yelp
Been eating here since I was a kid. This is my moms favorite restaraunt. I never understood why as a kid, since I used to be vegetarian. I now understand why years later haha. I love the chicken here, and I don't love eating chicken. Chicken is kinda flavorless and dry (when not fried!) but Versailles has to be the best. The garlic, the onions heaven.
google avatar

Yelp
Provender: if you're craving Cuban food, Versailles is the go-to spot. I recommend ordering the garlic chicken special. It comes with rice, black beans, and fried plantains. Garlic lovers, it's your dream come true! The pork special is also another great option. I've also tried their beef empanadas and they were delicious. Prices: the garlic chicken special runs about $20, but it feeds two. The prices are reasonable since you get a lot of bang for your buck. Parking: there's a small lot so there are a few spots, but it can get tight. People: fun for all. Perks: when eating the specials, it's best to soak up the juices along with getting a spoonful of rice and beans. They also serve beef dishes and sandwiches, so there are other options to choose from.

Yelp
Even though I am not Cuban every once in awhile I crave a Cuban dinner or lunch. This week was one of those weeks so I stopped in on my way home from work to pick up some take out, and I'm very happy that I did so. The order was ready in 15 mins and I was lucky enough to find parking right out front, even though their parking lot is fairly small. They have a ton of delicious items to choose from so for this dinner, and our first time at Versailles, we chose the Media Noche, which is basically the better version of a Cuban sandwich, and it was terrific. I added avocado to mine, which I highly recommend. We also ordered the Chicken Empanadas and they were filled with delicious meat and perfectly crispy. We also ordered the Vaca Frita, which is shredded flank steak loaded with onions, which was probably my favorite of the items. The onions were crispy and the steak was delicious. I would definitely recommend to any fan of Cuban food or to anyone looking for a solid lunch or dinner option.

Yelp
The is delicious, great service. The restaurant is very clean with plenty of tables. Great location. We'll definitely come back.

Yelp
I ordered food online and came by to pick it up. It was quite good, however, the tostones had a touch of ripe plantain taste, and I didn't like that. The sauce they came with was good. I ordered the chicken dish and had enough for two meals. It was nice and tasty. This was an old school looking place and I liked it. From the signage outside to the indoor seating. The most modern thing to me was the hand sanitizer stations. The people greeted us when I entered to pick up the food and they were totally nice. Their "to go" game is on point because the food was nice and warm when I picked it up and was still warm and tasty by the time I got to my sister's appointment. I don't know if I'd come to this location again, because I don't go to LA often, but I did like the fact that they have more than one location. That way, I'd be able to get my Versailles fix closer to where I'm staying.

Jenny T.

Yelp
Did an order of lomo saltado for takeout and I arrived really early, but the staff were able to whip up my order in no time, while being friendly with me! The beef was very tender and juicy, I really like they don't skimp on the tomato sauce or portions in general.
google avatar

Tazae O.

Yelp
Get the chicken. That's all I really have to say, it will change your life. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The ambiance is pretty casual, no complaints but read the first sentence again. That's all.
google avatar

Melanie F.

Yelp
Absolutely my fav Cuban restaurant. This establishment has been in LA for decades. The food never disappoints . The arroz con polio ( garlic chicken) is the best. I would give it five stars but my basket of bread was cold and hard.It. It not suppose to taste like that lol. Besides that all good eats!
google avatar

Rolly R.

Yelp
One of my favorite place to get chicken in Los Angeles. Prompt and excellent service. Good location, has ample parking spaces but not sure during Friday night or weekends. But I do know that i get parking all the time during the middle of the day. I always order to go and call in ahead of time. Recommended their famouse half chicken sauce on the side and oxtail stew. Enough for two person.
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Quick, easy, cheap, delicious. The waiter was very helpful and showed me gluten free options
google avatar

Dilenia A.

Yelp
This location's food is delish! The seasoning was perfection, much better than the one on Venice Blvd. I will be coming to this location more often since the food was cooked and seasoned the way Cuban food should be and taste!!! Can't wait to try their other plates and appetizers. Go to THIS LOCATION not the other ones, you won't be disappointed!!!
google avatar

Alma R.

Yelp
Food was excellent as well as the service ! My husband took me for our wedding anniversary and it was just lovely. The space was nice, not loud just perfect. We really enjoyed the food and place! Will be definitely going back.
google avatar

LaTanya G.

Yelp
First time going here, this place was recommended by my coworker. We dined in and had a great time. I ordered the sandwich cubano. My sandwich came with fries and I ordered a side of plantains (I love plantains ). Also, I made a great choice of having the sangria as well. The customer service is excellent and it's a chill vibe.
google avatar

Cindy N.

Yelp
This spot really doesn't look like much from the outside. We were hesitant walking in, but golly--it was such amazing food and service! I ordered the Cubano sandwich. The cheese, the meat, the flavor!!! Soooo good. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It also came with a yummy side of fries. We also ordered two empanadas, one chicken and one beef. They even stamp the empanadas with the letters of the meat. They were small and delicious as well! Highly recommend coming here. I'll be back! :)
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
This place is always a classic in LA. I typically get the pork chop with onions and rice. This time I got the half chicken with garlic sauce and it did not disappoint. Just get it don't ask questions. Other things we ordered - impossible meat dish 10/10 hats off to the chef for making such an inclusive and delicious with out skimping on cultural flavors

Thomas J G.

Yelp
Went to this place for the first time. Traveled quite a bit to try it, because my wife liked it and hadn't had it in a long time. She had their famous chicken and said it was very good. I had the vaca frita and it was exceptional! Their tostones were not good. They were hard, dry, and flavorless. The rice was a little dry and my wife liked the beans. I'm not a fan of Cuban beans. We will try the bigger place they have next time. Not sure if it's better than their small place.
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
Big fan of the chicken and rice and the oxtails and black beans. Really great restaurant reminds me of the local spots in Washington Heights just a bit more expensive. But great for LA.
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
My family favorite Cuban place in LA! I love the garlic chicken and the rice and beans are delicious l!! The people are always soooo kind and fun place to be
google avatar

Monica N.

Yelp
Never thought I'd see a Versailles in LA. I went to the one in Miami and loved it there. Got free garlic bread. Ordered Garlic chicken with white rice and beans. If I could do it again, I'd ask for garlic sauce on the side - since they put it on top it was a little salty and the sauce made the skin not as crispy. Chicken was great. Soft and easily falls off the bone. Hard for me to find parking on a Saturday afternoon - I had to go residential street parking and walk over. There's a small lot in front if you're able to make it at opening and you're lucky to find an open spot Can't compare it to Miami since I got a Cuban sandwich back then, but I'd be open to go back here and try out more
google avatar

Haysha G.

Yelp
It was good, tasty and quality was decent although i would of loved if there was a piece of bread, service was quite fast. Will be ordering from here again as this is by far the most authentic to Cuban food
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
This place is soooo good. Whenever we're in the area, we always stop by. Their beef and chicken empanadas are delicious (and filling). I've had their wings and croquettes and it's good too. So far for entrees, we've tried their Rabo encendido (oxtail), ropa vieja, pollo empanizado, and lechon asado and have not been disappointed. Everything is flavorful and tasty. The entrees usually come with white rice and black beans. I prefer mine with arroz Moro. I've had their fried yucca and plantains as sides (both equally delicious).
google avatar

Keshia R.

Yelp
I moved to Texas 5 years ago so when I come home I always hit up my favorite spots. Versailles never misses. It's been a long time since I have been here but I went with one of my favorite meals. It was delicious. The empanadas were perfect! The service was impeccable. Parking is always a challenge at this location but I was lucky to get parking right away. The parking lot is super small. I don't think people come here for the ambiance, they come here for the food. I highly recommend you check them out!
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
These guys are still doing it!! First time eating in the restaurant post COVID and was wondering if it was going to be as good as before.. I can happily report that YES, it is. We got the tried and true garlic chicken which was super moist with that amazing tangy garlic sauce. We also got the chicken wings for the first time and it won't be the last, really good also. Loved the bread as always even though it's super simple. Can't wait to go again.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
My favorite Cuban restaurant in LA. The roast pork with rice, beans and plantains is my go to dish but I also really enjoy their Cuban sandwiches. It's a big restaurant and the waiters are very attentive. There is a parking lot in front.

Jamia B.

Yelp
I honestly don't understand the 4 stars from ppl who are solely complimenting the place LOL but anyways!! I absolutely love this place. I had no idea it's been a mile away from me and I've been living in this area for 3 years. I stumbled across it one night ordering door dash and omg !!!!!!! Words can't describe how excellent the food is. I have went 3 times in the past 2 weeks and I'm going again today! I love Cuban food and they cook the food to perfection. I always want more. Great job! Service is good as well. The ambiance is nice. I love it. My new favorite place for sure
google avatar

Fabiola P.

Yelp
My first time and it definitely give me miami vibes of how authentic the food taste . The service was quick but genuine. Love the location and space felt like home .
google avatar

Nate F.

Yelp
I drove past this when I was looking for it the first time. Conspicuous location with tricky parking but once you get in here it's love. Diner-like comfort food setting who seem to have a booming business as lots of different people of all kind filled this establishment. Service started off fast then became slow but it all evened out. Can't find anything to complain about when it comes to the food. The shredded pork was bursting with flavor. Beans and rice couldn't be better and the plantains were good as well. It's a pretty nice sized serving so you may have enough to take home. Will be back to try more menu items without a doubt.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Food is always consistent and always delicious. Parking is tight but I managed to get a parking every time. Servers and nice, pleasant and friendly! This restaurant is nice and spacious. Big booths and nice ac

Yelp
I was visiting from out of state. And was craving an LA favorite from years ago. Food did not dissapoint as usual! Delicious chicken. Attentive staff. Great experience!

Tiffiny H.

Yelp
This place is so good! So, I was meeting friends here for dinner. It turns out that there are two locations. I was at one and they were at this one. Luckily, when I finally arrived, I already knew what I wanted. I had recently seen an episode of Relish, where Fricase de Pollo was made and, so I wanted to try that at Versailles. It. Is. So. Good! It is very flavorful, the chicken is enveloped in this sauce and is paired with black beans and rice, as well as fried plantains. One friend had the Cuban sandwich and the other had the Lechon Asado. Three happy campers! I can't wait to go back.

Isabella H.

Yelp
This place is the best Cuban food in Los Angeles. Amazing service accompanied with amazing food!!!

Sheila S.

Yelp
We were there last Sunday. The service was great but the food was not. The Oxtails were tough and without flavor. The rice was old, hard and cold. The bread was old as well. The chicken and rice entree was dry and tasteless.
google avatar

Melodie L.

Yelp
Never disappoints!! The famous chicken with the garlic sauce on the side is amazing. The chicken is juicy and pairs really well with the garlic sauce. They do give you the option for all dark or all white meat if you choose for a few dollars more. Tip - ask for the sauce on the side to keep the chicken skin crispy :)
