On the Grid : Verve Coffee Roasters

"A watering hole amid a concrete canyon is Verve Coffee's Downtown Los Angeles location. Instantly recognizable by the floor-to-ceiling grow walls, the coffee house is a welcome respite for the area's professionals - both creative and otherwise. Other notable features include concrete floors inlaid with a bespoke chevron pattern and custom wood and steel furnishings. Pop-in in the morning for a caffeine boost or early afternoon for a refreshing cold pressed juice." - Canopy

"These guys are actually based in Santa Cruz, but they recently expanded into Los Angeles with two locations—on Spring Street in the Arts District and, most recently, on Melrose in West Hollywood. No matter which location you pick, you'll find reliable internet and plenty of seating housed in a sleek, urban-feeling space. Verve also practices direct trade with the farmers who source their coffee beans—an important (and very difficult to execute) practice that allows them to exceed fair-trade minimums when they pay farmers for their goods."

Google
This is a well-known coffee chain with a great reputation, and for good reason—their coffee and pastries are delicious. However, one major downside is the parking situation. Most of their locations have very limited or difficult parking, which can be frustrating, especially during busy hours. If you don’t mind the hassle, it’s definitely worth it for the quality of their drinks and baked goods.

Google
The setting is nice inside and there is lots of seating and outlets but the music is very loud so not ideal for studying. There is also seating outside with nice plants but it has a lot of flies. The service was very good, very friendly and helpful. I got the iced chai latte with oat milk and it was pretty bland, not worth almost $8.

I visited with the thought of drinking delicious coffee after a long time. They gave me a latte in a paper cup without asking me. The moment I opened the lid, I thought it would not taste good. The latte filled with only white milk foam was not worth 6.25. After taking a sip, I could not help but think that it was milk. I asked the barista if it was a double shot, and she said it was, but that was a lie. It was my mistake to think that the coffee at this store was the best in dlta. I will never visit again.❗️

Google
Amazing choices for many palettes. Enough diversity in beans to please nearly everyone. Great cafe for working or personal time

Google
I was looking for a place to do some studying and a friend recommended Verve. It’s a nice spot to just enjoy some tea and do some reading. There are a lot of people who seemed to be working, and a small group just there to socialize a bit. Everyone seemed respectful of the environment. You can pay for the tea once and get a couple steeps, which I thought was a nice touch. I’ll be back!

Google
This coffee shop is hands down the best coffee shop in LA. I think what makes it one of the best is the amazing baristas that I have gotten to know over time. They are incredibly approachable, friendly, and really make you feel at home. As a transplant from New York City, this place has made the transition much easier and smoother. If you have ever seen the tv show "Cheers"--everyone here does know your name! In such a disconnecting world, this spot really reminds you how beautiful human connection is, through a cup of tea/coffee/drink. The drinks are great! As a tea drinker, you have so many choices beyond coffee. I hear the coffee is amazing though--many people come to buy their beans here. They have seasonal drinks and also food + bakery. Their banana chocolate chip muffin and loaf are so good. It's a great place to meet with friends to chill, it's also a great place to co-work with others. I have met some incredible people while doing work here. The space is wonderful because you have great indoor and outdoor options. Honestly, it's perfect. Thank you Verve!

Google
Verve has always put out beautiful cafe locations, and this DTLA one is no exception. It has both a large interior and exterior with plenty of seating, well designed seating, and a space that makes you want to admire the details. The espresso and pastry selection are always top tier, and they have plenty of merch and grab-and-go items that can pique your interest. The only thing this location needs to work on is a solution for the years long issue of flies hanging out in the front during warmer seasons. They don’t bother you while sitting outside, but it still is a bit of a buzz kill. 😬

Google
Definitely know how to make an espresso ☕️ We ordered a cortado and an iced mocha! Enjoyed the outdoor patio area! We took some bags of coffee beans home for pour overs! 😋 ☕️

Yelp
Really beautiful setting with lots of seating. Coffee is delicious, I recommend the lattes!

Yelp
Cute spot for studying and working or catching up with friends in downtown Los Angeles! There's seating inside and outside plus clean bathrooms and wifi. Service is friendly and your drinks come out quickly. I liked that they serve your drinks in ceramic mugs and glasses if you dine in so you don't have to feel bad about using a single-use cup. The matcha latte is overall pleasant tasting but could've used a bit more matcha for a stronger flavor.

Yelp
I've been a regular customer at Verve Coffee, frequently buying their beans, even though they're overpriced at the shop--$6 more expensive than the same Verve beans at the supermarket. Every time I bought beans, the employees would kindly offer me a complimentary cappuccino, which I always appreciated. However, my recent encounter with the manager was incredibly disappointing. Unlike his team, who clearly value good customer service, he insisted on charging for the cappuccino and criticized the employees for their thoughtful gestures. When I brought this up, one of the employees made a rude comment, suggesting that I wasn't "kind" or was being "aggressive," which was completely uncalled for. Giving honest feedback is neither unkind nor aggressive. When I confronted the manager & the employee about how inappropriate and dismissive this was, I received an insincere apology that only made the situation feel worse. For a business that charges premium prices, this experience was unacceptable. The manager's attitude tarnishes the otherwise welcoming environment created by the staff, and it left me questioning whether supporting this shop is worth it.

Yelp
Everything we tried was good, especially the cappuccino and croissant. They don't have a kitchen there, they only serve premade meals. But nonetheless, the food was good. Staff were good. They have self service. It's a good place to chill or work from with a good ambiance.

Yelp
Cosmic flash cream top, a summer special this past July Love all the greenery out front on their patio. Lots of tables and chairs to sit whether you want to soak up the sun outside or beat the heat inside. The cosmic flash cream top sounded fun, but ultimately lacked caffeine! I wanted more of a punch. It was rather mild, despite being advertised as a cold brew. The cream was nice, but I thought I would be getting more coffee. The iced drink was a good way to cool off from the LA summer heat though.

Yelp
I love Verve because it brings back memories of time spent in Santa Cruz and going to Verve every single day. I was thrilled the DTLA shop was close to my hotel. The hubby and I spent an hour one morning when they opened and took advantage of having the patio to ourselves. It's a large patio that faces the street but has foliage that gives off peaceful vibes. I ordered an americano with cream while the hubby had the drip. We then went back and ordered another round of coffee and a kouigamann pastry and a blueberry muffin. The coffee was smooth, delicious, and perfectly heated. Their pastry case has a lot of options and the kouigamann did not disappoint. We picked up two bags of beans to take back home and can't wait to grind and brew them.

Bella A.

Yelp
While visiting L.A. I happened to walk by Verve and thought I'd grab a matcha. Upon my surprise it was hands down the best matcha I've ever had, and my friend really enjoyed the nitro cold brew as well! Definitely worth the downtown traffic.
google avatar

Eriko M.

Yelp
Dropped by Sunday late morning. Got a cold brew to go. Pretty tasty. Lots of milk options. Friendly service. I do think their to go cups are a little difficult to sip from. The opening is really far from the edge of the cup. They have both indoor and outdoor seating if you want to bring your pet. Inside looked cute if you want to sit and read. The area isn't the safest/cleanest but that's not their fault. It's on the middle of downtown.
google avatar

Layla A.

Yelp
Across the street from nice kicks. Verve had a beautiful indoor/outdoor seating area (although a bit cold when we went in December) with a delicious array of coffee and specialty drinks. Loved what I ordered (gingerbread latte). My only gripe here is that they upcharge for alternative milk. DTLA=parking is what it is
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
Great coffee. I just got the "cup of the day". Very complex flavor profile and a very relaxed space. Nice way to start a last day in LA.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
A nice coffee shop in DTLA. It's spacious with both an indoor and outdoor space. Got our drinks pretty quick on a Saturday morning. They have summer specials going on. A citrus latte and a cold brew with foam top. Both were smooth. Would come back if in the area. Worth a checkout or a cool study spot.

Yelp
Customer service sucks. Ive visited two times thinking I should've just went elsewhere - both times. I also saw a lady trash her drink after a single sip. I almost did the same. No eye contact, no acknowledgement from the two people working there. It was pretty empty when I went in - there was nobody else in the line, except the one other person who had already ordered whom the barista was chatting with. I guess both of them were too busy to take my order. By the way, is it normal for the barista to not call out the name of the order? I waited a few extra minutes thinking mine was still in the process of making. Then I realized it was on the table the entire time. Sure, I could've been more attentive but the area was a bit crowded so I waited elsewhere. Coffee is alright I guess.. but I don't think the barista really cares about the drinks he's making. He's just there to be there. My drink was 80% full to the cup. Could've added more ice to make it look like its full, but whatever. Hated the experience. I've worked as a barista for a LONG time and it hurts to experience this type of service.

Yelp
Great coffee. Great place to stop by and meet people but bad parking. It's really hard to find parking around this area. Once parked it's easy to access.

Yelp
Third wave/independently owned coffee shop from Santa Cruz, roasting coffee by hand since 2007. Verve roasts a variety of their own branded blends and single origins, which are thoughtfully sourced. They facilitate direct trade partnerships with producers, and pay premiums for high quality. They currently have 5 cafes in LA, as well as locations in Santa Cruz, the Bay Area, and Japan. On a Saturday afternoon, this DTLA location was packed. The space is huge, with an abundance of indoor and outdoor seating, but there was still not a single seat available, save for one at the edge of the bar. I took it, and realized that it was a staff area after learning that the guy sitting next to me was the manager lol. He was super friendly and welcoming. I got their seasonal Pumpkin Pie Latte, which was delicious; in fact, one of the best pumpkin spice lattes I've ever had. Lots of fall spices, and real pumpkin. I would ask for it a little less sweet next time, but it was otherwise perfect. The bakery case was fully stocked with viennoiserie from Larder Baking Co, and cakes/cookies from Jano's Vegan Bakery. I opted for a Lemon Olive Oil Loaf (vegan), which was melt-in-your-mouth moist, with an icing that was not overly sweet. It was delicious; none of that canola oil aftertaste that vegan baked goods tend to have. I highly recommend Verve.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE the Verve! This was my first time here and the coffee was so good. The ambiance was awesome with there earthy feel. They have a lot of cool plants in their outdoor seating. The service was really good, they were friendly, welcoming and willing to give suggestions. This is a trendy spot which is cool if you're trying to have a meet up!
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
This place is a nice spacious work/study spot in DTLA and it's even dog-friendly. The gibraltar was good, but the chai was watery.
google avatar

Travis W.

Yelp
Nice joint to chill and relax. They serve pretty good coffee and food. My barista was really skilled at his craft. Quite the interesting vibe on the patio. Makes you want to stay awhile.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Verve is my favorite coffee shop in terms of drink quality, food menu, and pastry. I love their lattes -- you can't go wrong. In terms of pastry, try the croissants! And off the food menu, I LOVE their sweet potato hash -- I've even tried to recreate it at home -- and I love the breakfast burrito too. The Verve in arts district is superior. The interior is so spacious and it even has two floors. Plenty of space to sit and work. Service is great too! They always remove your empty plates and dishes in a timely manner. Love Verve so much!
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Hello, here is my short review of verve! Ok first off trying to find parking was somewhat of a nightmare, but luckily I found a spot a couple blocks away. This space is stunning and the ambiance is what you want for a relaxing coffee shop experience. The main reason why I give this place a 3 is because of the young lady in the counter. You want to be greeted and welcomed and I didn't get that. It was actually a little awkward. The coffee was good, but at that point I just wanted to get out of there
google avatar

Deisa H.

Yelp
The cafe was really spacious and I was able to get some work done! The coffee and pastry selections were also great The parking situation might be a little tricky since it's pretty small and the place gets busy!
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Love this location. It's a little loud outside, but being underneath all that greenery with a good set of headphones makes it worthwhile. I'll be back.
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
Verve was an unexpected stop while taking an unexpected walk around DTLA. I'm not a coffee drinker but they DID have a restroom which is what I was need of. What I ended up getting as well was their iced cascara which tasted a bit like an unsweetened Jamaica. On top of the refreshing drink their veranda area was shaded, cool and quiet. Even though it was steps away from the street it seemed like a nice little oasis and a nice respite from walking further along than planned.
google avatar

Bre W.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice. The music was great, not too loud, there was just enough indoor & outdoor seating. I love the aesthetic of the outside seating in the front entrance. The staff were friendly, good service. I had half of a croissant & half of their overnight oats, only because I couldn't finish both, but both were tasty! If I come back to DTLA area, I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Great place for studying and getting work done. The food they have are ready to eat and sufficient in a study environment and for a cafe. Ambiance is not too loud and able to focus on getting work done. They also have outlets, which was a bonus!
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
First of all, hats off for trying to run a business in the lawless hellscape of downtown Los Angeles, aka Walking Dead Real Life. Tea was good. BUT this review is for the croissant I got. It wasn't dry per se, it was just extremely extremely extremely soft and tasteless mush. It tasted/felt like one of those packaged ones you buy by the dozen for like $3 at smart n final or something.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
I love drinks at Verve and they make great vanilla lattes which are my go to. I've been to other Verve locations but it was my first time at this specific one. It's smaller than the ones I've been to but very cute and modern inside. Verve makes really yummy lattes and I highly recommend coming here for drinks!!
google avatar

Yelp
I hate myself for having such bad dementia for names. The closing shift lead gentleman today was so kind and patient with me regarding bean & pour over recommendations. Just search up Monday 9/3/22 closing shift if y'all need to find out who he is. Give him a raise or promotion anything!(: I let him know I took a quirky quick quiz on their site and it recommended me the "Jibicho" beans. He let me know he knows the person who had made that quiz and will inform them people are using it! I just started pour over at home as well and we had a good convo regarding how many scoops and measurements of beans to use per cup. Def very kind of him to be so informative during closing time! He was very nice and polite without being coffee snobby lol (: They also played Closing Time by Semisonic Which is super perfect and cute LOL
google avatar

Flora Z.

Yelp
Ambiance is interesting with a lot of green plants, helping one relax. The coffee I had tastes just like other coffee. I also ordered a croissant for my breakfast. It looks like a sad croissant, as it was squeezed and kind of flat. When I was there in the early morning, only two crews were working. They opened the store later than their business hour, but they were diligent to take care of the line.
google avatar

Kelley H.

Yelp
This is a super cute coffee date spot! Came here on a Friday morning after a work out class and it was pretty packed, but found a table outside. Got an iced latte with almond milk, coffee cake, and almond croissant. Coffee was really good and pastries were decent. Overall, a nice place to chat and catch up. I also noticed a few people were studying/working on their laptops here. I would come back if I were in the area, but parking is a little tough. Luckily I was able to find metered parking not too far away, but the lots around the area are quite pricey ($15-20 flat rate).
google avatar

Dita Y.

Yelp
Modern chill place to have a meeting in a beautiful interior, nice and friendly staff
google avatar

Francesca M.

Yelp
Great coffee shop in downtown LA. The ambiance is beautiful and there are lots of indoor and outdoor seating options. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Esther K.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my time and coffee while here. Street parking can be a bit difficult to find, but the cafe is great to work at. Everyone was really friendly and appreciated the studious nature of the patrons. The interior has high ceilings and a lot of natural elements.
google avatar

Aileen H.

Yelp
The best thing about this location was it has power outlets and it's own bathroom! It was my first time visiting Verve. I was meeting a friend for coffee and we both wanted to work so this place was perfect in meeting those objectives. Coffee: 3/5 Maybe it's because I got the ice latte, I couldn't really taste the coffee flavor. I thought the coffee was just alright. I also got the chicken Cesar kale wrap. Both combined was $16. The wrap was ok. Ambiance: 5/5 The space was modern, open, airy and had lots of seating both indoor and outdoor. Parking: 1/5 There are paid parking lots nearby and they are both $15 flat rate for all day. I ended paying $8 for 2 hour maximum street metered parking. Neighborhood: 2/5 It's downtown LA. So there's no need for me to say more. Service: 5/5 I think if you live close by and want a place to hang out, study/ work and get coffee, then this is the perfect place. I wouldn't recommend driving here just for their coffee.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time. Really nice. When I went it wasn't crowded and has a nice comfortable view of DTLA. Love it here
google avatar

Veronika R.

Yelp
I tried Verve out for the first time while I was looking for somewhere new to work and I loved it! The environment was super comfortable and I stayed for awhile. I believe I ordered the mocha, it was perfect and honestly exactly what I wanted!
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Coffee is great. The cafe de olla latte and the pumpkin pie latte are good. Good place for studying. There is a lot of space. The service is quick. Didn't have to wait. I think you need to ask in order to get your drinks in a mug or glass. I wish they would have asked me. Also, they don't call your name when your drink is ready. They kind of expect you to know. It's okay. I just need to study.

Susie K.

Yelp
Nice cafe to grab a quick bite and choice of drink. Personally, I'm not a fan of their coffee (citrusy), but overall experience is great. Staff is kind. The place is clean and beautiful. Food is yummy. Outdoor seatings are also available which is a plus for pet parents. There's no parking on site but there's plenty of free street parking.
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
This is a Santa Cruz-based chain that is growing within LA and Beverly Hills. However, this is one location where parking can be challenging. Directly next door is a parking lot, yet you have to pay. You can park on the street nearby, yet open spaces are sparse. Park a few blocks to the left in close proximity to the now closed Hotel Cecil on Main Street, and you are in Skid Row. Good luck with that. Anyways, you can't go wrong with the product. The Ethiopian and Guatemalan pour overs are my go to drinks, coupled with a Topo Chico to calm the stomach from getting bubble guts. The seating area is somewhat unique, in that most of the seating seems to have a community feel to it. And in LA, community is a good thing, since a lot of Los Angelino locals really live up to their reputation of pretentiousness and not talking to each other. Customer service is really good here. The baristas are usually top notch in their attitudes & getting the order out promptly, and correctly. You can tell that they really enjoy working here. That, or the caffeine is really that potent. Overall, this is a true 21st century forward thinking coffee venue unlike most in SoCal.
google avatar

Rebekah M.

Yelp
Always seems to be an argument where the line forms wince there are two doors some people go left some go right and this is the third time today I've had someone just walk right in front of me to order and then try to still say they were here first.... Coffee is great but not the customer experience
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
I started my early morning with the Santa Cruz-based coffee company. This café is located in the heart of the busy downtown Los Angeles and walking-distance from my hotel on 8th Street. When I walked in, I see an enchanting outdoor seating area in front of the café to overlook busy Spring Street. To start my day, I ordered the house coffee and an almond croissant. The house coffee from the day was a blend from Costa Rica, one of many fine regions for quality coffee beans. The flaky almond croissant, which is baked locally, had a nice amount of creamy almond filling. For $8.00, the pair is a great way to start my day in LA. With proof of fully vaccination, you can chill inside and use the café's strong WiFi. In and out, the dining situation has a cool vibe. There are so many places to grab your Joe in downtown LA. But you can't beat Verve Roasters.

Yelp
Drink Taste: 8 out of 10 Drink Presentation: 10 out of 10 Vibes: 10 out of 10 Customer Service: 10 out of 10 Parking: 8 out of 10 If you want a place that will make you forget you're in LA, this is the one. The architecture of this building is to die for, both indoors and outside. It truly gives the Arts District a run for its money. It is very spacious, open, bright, and welcoming. Whether you go to study or hang out, you will enjoy the visit. If you're into the spicier chai lattes, this is one for you. You can opt for honey or syrups to sweeten it up too. The pastries are delish BUT their oatmeal is out of the world. First time trying this recipe combination out and I really recommend grabbing one and trying it out! Changed the game :) One final not, unfortunately, there are no outlets so heads up if you're there for a while doing work. Either way, I enjoyed the experience and would go again! Drink Reviewed: Chai Latte

Yelp
Such a cool coffee shop in DTLA! I love the vibe - I could sit there all day sipping on coffee and working remotely. I enjoyed the outdoor seating and it was so chill. I tired the pumpkin pie latte - OMG! It tastes just like you're biting into a piece of pie. So very delicious!! It's sweet, but not overly sweet. The perfect balance! I highly recommend giving Verve Coffee Roasters a try!
google avatar

Guile G.

Yelp
Went in today it was not too busy. I got the pumpkin pie latte. It was overall pretty good. A little too sweet for me but still good. Would recommend and would come back to try different drinks.
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
Solid, consistent drinks. I go for their pour overs usually. Nice vibe indoors. Friendly baristas.
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
Love the outdoor seating with a green plant wall. Great ambiance. Very relaxing sitting there if you're working on your laptop or just having coffee. Great matcha, wasn't a fan of the Chai latte. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Angel B.

Yelp
Quality coffee, cute ambience. Definitely a great spot to take cute pictures and relax/work on your computer. Service was great and quick even with the line they had. Baristas are skilled and it shows in their coffee. With that said, parking is absolutely HORRENDOUS since parking is very limited so be prepared to have to look around. I don't believe this place deserves less stars because of that though. Definitely coming back to try other items off the menu!!
google avatar

Alfred C.

Yelp
"'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, that's life!" -one of my fave songs back in the day. Love that tune. The strings!! Verve Coffee Roasters java gives me similar feelings. Well maybe not as awesome as The Verve plays that lyrical tune, but good. Great coffee while in DTLA and many flavors to choose from. I loved my Jesus Javier -Mexico blend. Has a bit of Blood Orange, brown sugar and nutmeg. Damn it's good. Solid, solid good. Do yourself a big java flavor. Visit and ask for this one. Especially if you like it without cream or sugar. Just go with it. Smell it, then sip it light. Thank you. -Parking can be tough. There's short/long parking next door and meters along the street.
google avatar

Celine C.

Yelp
My girl friend slept over after a night of partying and we decided to be wholesome with breakfast and coffee. I've had Verve bookmarked forever and she confirmed that it's pretty good, so we walked over. I would've given this place 5 stars, but many of the items that were served at the Arts District location or on the menu were unavailable. Quite disappointing actually. Ambiance was awesome though - I really liked the patio area where there's tons of greeneries with benches and cute little individual tables. It's a super relaxing coffee shop. I ended up getting an iced latte with overnight oats. Iced latte was definitely tasty with the bold coffee flavor that I like. Overnight oats were quite bland compared to some of the better ones I've had around the city. I sampled my friend's matcha latte and it was quite good. Definitely had that authentic matcha powder flavor!

Yelp
This may have been the best cup of coffee I have ever had in my life!! Amazing! Staff was super friendly and the cafe was so nice. Great atmosphere!!!
