The Best Rice Porridges to Savor in Los Angeles

"El Monte’s beloved Viet Huong Restaurant serves half a dozen varieties of Vietnamese-style porridge (chao). Whether it’s brimming with congealed pork blood (huyet) or made with shrimp or beef, every bowl comes topped with cilantro and golden shallots. The Asian diner-style interior (check the red fabric-lined booths that flank the windows) and chill atmosphere solidify this as a locals’ favorite." - Cathy Chaplin, Eater Staff

Great place to eat , and the portions are really well served. The environment is chill, and they are quick to serve you. Came here for a quick bite. I got the jasmine tea and Thai tea and ended up staying longer than I thought. I thought we could get the bigger plates and ordered a couple of items on that menu and ended up with plenty of take-home food, so that was a major plus. It's a little restaurant but with major flavor and a clean restroom, also a major plus to me. Definitely a must try for you and your family, or a date , and you can also enjoy this place solo. Most plates sit around 15, but you really get the most out of it. Fresh greens, nice teas , great flavor , plenty of food , fresh and hot plates. When I asked for extra limon , or to go boxes and a soup container, they were more than happy and quick to hand me another piece. Great place to stop in El Monte.

I was told this was the best pho in El Monte and it definitely was a solid bowl of pho. I ordered their full fried chicken with vegetables and large beef pho with no noodles(keto diet, wish I could eat the noodles). Both were delicious, the fried chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The pho was delicious, the meats were excellent and the broth was very flavorful. I’d definitely come back to this spot again to try their other menu items.

I went to this restaurant last night with 4 friends and I was really impressed. The food was delicious, very authentic, fresh, lots of flavor! Service was prompt and friendly also. And the prices are really reasonable too for such great quality food. I will definitely be back!

Google
This place is a great local Viet place to get your fix. The staff is very nice and attentive, accommodating and very helpful and the food is great. I've had the com tam dishes with grilled pork and the pork chop. Overall, great amount of food and great flavor. The appetizer sampler is great value and the spring rolls are excellent. I've had the shrimp and lean pork spring rolls and those were wrapped very well and flavorful. My friends often get the pho dac biet and bun bo hue which are also great.

NEVER EAT HERE. The food was disgusting; no flavor. At all. We'll except for the crayon aftertaste of my broth. The service was also crappy; server didn't check on us one time. Not once to see if the food was good or ask if I wanted more diet coke. And to top it all off we waited for the check so long, my wife had to walk up to them and pay. From the janky sign outside to the unmotivated and poorly dressed wait staff to the crappy food, I think my first experience with Pho will be my last. You should be ashamed of your selves. 😡

Omg pho is so delicious I got a favorite new spot please visit this place ..

I tried the shrimp and crab glass noodle bowl and it was very good. Server was nice and quick. The minus star was for the old table and chairs. Chair leather was ribbed and looked ghetto.

Google
I haven't been to many Vietnamese restaurants, but this is definitely the best one so far. It is understaffed, but that is understandable due to covid. The owner is a nice guy who takes great pride in his work. The food is delicious! I enjoyed the spring rolls very much. The Vietnamese coffee was as strong as it should be and with good flavor. I will definitely be visiting this place again if I am ever in the area. Cảm ơn!

Yelp
Easy spot to kiss. Tiny parking lot. Was pretty packed by the time We left. Ordered brisket pho with extra meat. The side meat they brought was way too fatty. Sent it back and asked For MEATY meat, as brisket should be. Their fried egg rolls were delicious. was so full and found another spot with great pho and service

Yelp
Great selection of food and choices. The beef spring rolls and shrimp rolls are a consistent appetizer when ordering. The place is family owned and operated. They're all really nice and attentive. The restaurant itself can get a bit loud when it's full, great for all sized families.

Yelp
First impression of the pho gave me the home cook type of vibe which was so good . It wasnt too sweet it was perfect for my liking. Imo (in my opinion) this spot beats "golden deli" from the size of the bowl and the flavor of the broth. The nem nuron cuon was most definitely a secret menu the pork in the rolls paired so good with the fish sauce and garlic bussin!. The service was excellent. This will be most definitely my go to spot for pho.

Yelp
Been Trying see how my local Asian restaurants are in the El Monte community. This Vietnamese restaurant is pretty authentic. I got some spring rolls for appetizers which wasn't too bad. I got the shrimp and beef. Was a bit sad when the shrimp didn't come with the usual pork belly slices but it still pretty good. I also got the bun rieu and vermicelli with pork and eggroll which were both really good. Service was okay and if you don't speak Vietnamese the person we got had a hard time understanding English. Overall though, still a good place if you want some good Vietnamese f

Yelp
If you're in South El Monte and craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine, Viet Hoang is a must-visit! The moment my wife and I walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and seated right away. The ambiance is cozy, with a traditional family restaurant feel that instantly makes you feel at home. My wife ordered the Beef Spring Rolls, and they were spot-on. The balance of ingredients--fresh lettuce, noodles, and tender beef--was perfect. The dish was flavorful and served with a delicious peanut sauce on the side. You can also ask for fish sauce if you're in the mood for something different. I opted for the Bo Luc Lac, and let me tell you, it was absolutely mouthwatering! The steak cubes were well-seasoned and stir-fried to perfection. The garlicky rice, which had a hint of Spanish influence, was a delightful surprise. The dish also came with a side of lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, which added a refreshing touch. It truly felt like a taste of Vietnam! A special shoutout to Augie, the owner, who is incredibly humble and down-to-earth. You can tell he genuinely cares about his staff and the quality of the food they serve. He puts his heart and soul into the business, and it shows in every dish. I highly recommend stopping by Viet Hoang for an authentic and satisfying Vietnamese meal. The beef entrées, in particular, are savory and worth every bite!

Yelp
The freshness in the ingredients is the first thing we always notice here. Great service and they are always very welcoming. Portions are great and easily the best pho I've ever had.

Yelp
The flavor is one of the best!! Service is friendly and welcoming my new fav pho spot

Yelp
Would give this place 3.5 stars. Maybe it's cause I used to live in OC area and being Vietnamese q att so my standards are high. I thought this place was alright. The pho large is a huge portion, only complaint I have is that they didin"t put enough nuoc mam (fish sauce) but maybe that's just to adjust to the palate of the area. The bo luc lac was pretty mid. Portion was big but the quality wasnt there. Meat was too chewy and the rice was a lil mushy and clumped.
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
Great pho restaurant with delicious vegetarian options. Service is great and owners are very attentive. Ambiance is nice, clean tables etc I would say maybe a makeover is merited? Other than that the pho broth is delicious! Give it a try.

Yelp
First time here, this place is the real deal. Super authentic "hole in the wall" vibe. Everyone is super friendly and their pho tastes different from anywhere else. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
ALLERGY INFO: I have a severe peanut allergy, and ordered the grilled pork spring roles. The menu did not list crushed peanuts inside of the spring roles, and we double-checked with the waitress if there were peanuts or not. We mentioned that I had a peanut allergy and even asked for fish sauce on the side instead of the regular peanut dipping sauce. I felt that something off as soon as I took a bite, so we asked her again if there were peanuts in the spring roles or not. She didn't seem very sure but said again that there weren't any, but wasn't very convincing. At that point, my friends tasted and saw peanuts inside the spring roles, which were hard to see at first because they were crushed and hidden among the fried onions. She seemed young and not very confident at her job, but should have checked with a member of the kitchen staff. I'm writing this to warn other people. I was just sick for the rest of the night, but someone else could have died. The menu and the service we received was irresponsible and dangerous. The rest of the food was okay. The meat for the pho was sort of tough but the broth was fine.

Yelp
This place has great variety of food options and the egg rolls and spring rolls were soo good! The service was really quick and this place surprisingly fit a lot of people for how small the space was! Definitely coming back.

Yelp
I ordered the pho Viet Huong and shrimp & pork spring rolls to share. The peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls is so good. I like to dip my pho meat in it after eating the spring rolls. The pho came in a huge bowl that's twice the size of the small size. It was enough for two people. They gave only one plate of side veggies even though we got more than one bowl of pho. I like that there's never a wait to get seated here. The parking lot is small but theres always open spots. The booth seats are getting old as some cushions had big cracks. I always pay at the counter when we finish eating.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
If you're going with two people to get pho, get the viet huong special which is their extra large Dac Biet Pho. Plenty enough for two people. There's a small parking lot that usually gets pretty packed during peak times.
google avatar

Clarissa T.

Yelp
First impressions: it's really empty for a Saturday night, booths are ripped, and it's colder than a walk in refrigerator ( obviously an exaggeration but I was wearing a long sleeve, sweat pants, and a jacket and was still cold until I started eating) Food was okay. Pho broth was a little oily and the noodles were a tad undercooked and ever so slightly hard. The stand out part was the basil leaves which were gigantic. While I would normally appreciate the soup not being scalding hot, this time I wish it was to cook the noodles a bit more. I think it was a one off mistake since my boyfriend's noodles was spot on in terms of texture and temperature. I'm not sure I would come back as there are definitely better options in the area
google avatar

Yelp
Free small parking lot available or street parking. Staff is attentive and courteous. Food arrives very promptly. The bun Bo hue is not served with the normal veggie garnishes such as banana blossom and cabbage, etc. It's just the bowl of soup with bun, pork hock, coagulated pig blood and beef chunks. So it's missing the full experience but decent. The broth is good. I do like that the beef is cut into chunks instead of slices though. The pho is ok only the soup broth is missing something and doesn't smell delicious, good amount of beef included, pho noodles are a bit overcooked and falls apart. I like the pho noodles chewy instead. Their menu offers many Vietnamese dishes such as porridge, pho, bun, rice, banh cuon, pho ap chao, mi and mi xao, etc. so good place to come to try different dishes depending on your mood.

Yelp
Bruuhh this is the OG place for pho. The broth is so rich in flavor, meat broth mmm. It seems like there's very little MSG in the soup, but it's still amazing. The service is awesome, so kind. Overall AMAZING pho! 24 hours of cooking, they use the bones when they make the broth!! No wonder it's so good!!

Yelp
This place is our go to place when we want to have a big satisfying Vietnamese meal! Food: our go to items 1) appetizer sampler plate 2) combo pho 3) shaken beef with tomato rice 4) crispy pho and beef and veggies Service: service is pretty good and the owner always comes by to greet us when he's around. Recommend: Yes. Good food, good people, and good value!

Rey C.

Yelp
My family loves it here, we live down the street and this place is our go to spot. Can never go wrong with their delicious pho special and some spring rolls. We've loved everything we tried here so far! Who needs the OC, you can find great viet food anywhere!

Yelp
Best viet food in the area family owned great service unique flavor come on down bring the family the menu has a title bit of everything amazing flavor

Andrew R.

Yelp
The food is decent at this place but they close before their scheduled hours. The owner would likely be disappointed with the lost revenue if he or she knew. No comment on the ambience, pretty standard

Yelp
This is seriously one of my favorite Vietnamese food places. This location has been around for longer than 20 years. I used to take my little nephews and niece here and now, they're in their mid 20s. My favorite is their pho special. The broth is so flavorful. Banh Xeo is also really good too. Their menu is quite inclusive. I love this place
google avatar

Nathalie D.

Yelp
This location is my go-to whenever I'm craving spring rolls and pho. The food is always made fresh and the service is always excellent. Depending on the day and time you arrive to eat, there might be a crowd of people or it might be empty. When it's busy there's always that one person who needs to be louder than everyone in the restaurant don't allow it to take away from the delicious food.
google avatar

Yelp
Another local, family-owned gem here in EMT. In addition to yummy pho and noodle dishes, Viet Huong has some BOMB vegetarian/vegan selections for us meatless folks. Try the rice noodle salad with tofu, and ask for a side of the peanut sauce to put on it, and get a few tofu spring rolls to share with your friends. The dining room is clean and unpretentious, and staff are all super nice. :-)

Yelp
We've been going here for a few years now and it was quite by accident that we found it. It's a small family owned restaurant that my daughter read about and wanted to try and after trying and seeing how nice the owners were we were hooked. The pho is great and they have other dishes that we've tried that are equally delicious. Sorry I don't have pictures because I came for a pick up today. It's a small restaurant but you can expect great service each time you go. Please give them a try because I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Family friendly place too

Yelp
How does this place have 4 stars?? I've had plenty of spring rolls, and Vietnamese food. This place is actually TERRIBLE! Busted "spring rolls" with LETTUCE instead of the traditional herbs used in spring rolls. NO herbs on the side either for the egg rolls, like in the other pictures on yelp. Maybe this place used to be good 7 years ago from old reviews. This is not edible. Trash all around. Super bland tasting, food was cold by the time it god home 8 minutes away. Waste of money. Vietnamese food is super hard to mess up.. how can this be what you sell to your costumers
google avatar

Vijay W.

Yelp
I got rice, veggies and grilled beef. The rice and veggies were good(4/5).The beef was okay(3/5). The proportions were good for the price. The service was fine and the ambiance was fine. I would give it an overall of 3.8. But because the beef is the main component of the dish, I gave a star rating of 3 out of 5.
google avatar

Magda N.

Yelp
Pretty average pho restaurant. This is the spot you'd want to go, if you're looking for value meal. The bowl is about $14 for large now but they give so much meat & noodles. It's not the best tasting broth and the brisket does take a little bit of chewing, but it taste alright & they give a lot of meat. We called to pickup and it went pretty smooth. They only offer large size for to go (makes sense, otherwise they'd have to have so many size containers). The guy didn't say how long it would take, but we went 10 minutes later and everything was ready.
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
Wonderful Vietnamese restaurant located in El Monte. Some unique fusion dishes targeted to the heavy Latino community too which are quite good. Super friendly family service and some of the best pho around.
google avatar

Adrienne N.

Yelp
So many things I was disappointed in... How does this place have 4 stars? I got the Bun Chao Tom Cha Gio and it wasn't good or pleasing at all, plus look at the portion!! How would anyone eat all that noodle with a tiny piece of chao tom. Nothing in this bowl was good, not the egg roll or piece of shrimp, the noodles and vegetables were weird and fish sauce tasted so watered down. Everything about the pho was so mid, thai tea was mid. Honestly, the only decent item on the menu was the cafe su dua. The service isn't great nor is it fast. We are not coming back, the 4 stars was so misleading. With all the great vietnamese places in SGV, don't waste your time coming here.
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
I didn't try their best seller which am told is the lemongrass spicy beef soup (Bun Bo Hue). I got the rare beef and brisket PHO instead and it hit the spot. The broth tasted clean and beefy with a hint of cardamom taste. Nothing overpowering. The meats were kind of chewy which was not bad; fresh at least. They give plenty of fresh veggies on the side and were not skimpy. I appreciated that. I just wish the tables, menu, and condiments station at the table were a little cleaner. It felt kinda grimy. Although I must admit grimy places don't scare me, bad food and service does. This place has good food. Service is super friendly. Restaurant parking is tight and street parking has alot of potholes - no big deal. I shall return.
google avatar

Yelp
I just want to take time and say this place is The pho was so delicious and the beef spring rolls was *chef kiss The manager was so friendly and helpful The main star of the day They have the OG Sriracha :,)
google avatar

Richard O.

Yelp
I can't give this place 5 stars anymore. I cameby today and discovered they have a "C" rating. I know people in the food industry, in order for you to have a "C" rating you have to be filthy. I'm leaning towards going to Pho 87 in Chinatown, or Pho Hot in Glendale from now on.

Bertha C.

Yelp
The owner is the best! He greeted us and even had us try a little bit of a dish we weren't familiar with. The food is amazing everything from the appetizers to the Pho was fresh and delicious. Definitely a hidden gem!
google avatar

Becky Y.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times before with my family. We ordered bun rieu, spring rolls, pork chop with rice and beef with red rice. The servers were nice. I ordered bun bo hue and soda xi moui to-go today and asked if they could bring it out to my car since I had my baby with me. I think the owner came out and handed me my food and drink. All the food we ate there was delicious. We'd definitely come back to eat if we crave Vietnamese food again.

Yelp
Went on 06/12/22 wanting to get some pho and spring rolls even though the phone wasn't answered (they had a habit of not answering their phone and you had to call back). We took the risk since in the past, the place was opened and they just didn't answer their phone. Sad to say, there's a big closed sign on a lattice partition and on the door to the restaurant, itself. Posted was a notice by the Health Department that the place was closed due to vermin infestation. Now vermin can mean roaches, mice, insects, etc. But that is just gross! This used to be our go to spot for good pho and spring rolls. It was a drive, but worth it. However, now that other critters have also picked this spot as a good place for them, it's not going to be our spot anymore. I get it: give small, local businesses a chance and go back when they are re-inspected and re-open. But an infestation isn't something that happens overnight. There had to be indications that the owners or cooks saw (mouse/rat droppings, roach eggs, maggots, flies, etc) before it got so bad. it shouldn't have had to take the health department to force a business to follow health and sanitation standards by closing it. That's like asking an airline to do background checks on their pilots to make sure they have good vision, are sober, and continue to train on how to fly AFTER a crash. I mean, we ate here not even 2 weeks ago. I can only imagine that was before the health inspector arrived and whatever he found to close this place down was already in our food... It's food people and you put that in your body. There are some things in life that should be excused. Vermin infestation is NOT one of them. Gross!

Yelp
Great food and reasonable price. Don't expect fancy setting, but clean and organized. Home style cooking. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
This restaurant is currently offering both indoor and patio dining. The quality of the food here is decent. The service varied in quality from staff member to staff member. I was initially surprised to see the lack of pre-positioned napkin dispensers or condiments (Hoisin sauce, chili sauce, etc.) at the tables, but upon looking at pre-beer bug photos of the restaurant interior (where said items appeared to be pre-positioned at the tables), it then hit me that this was probably a deliberate management decision that was ostensibly made in the name of hygiene. That said, none of the staff is proactive about supplying napkins or condiments after your order is placed (or even inquiring if they are needed) - you will need to ask them if you want them. On the plus side, the customer seating is quite comfortable. The restaurant's parking lot is a little small, but luckily there is plenty of curb parking available nearby. All in all, it's no Pho Pasteur, but it'll do fine if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Marisah B.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for Pho, but don't just stick to the Pho--explore other dishes on the menu! It's a simple eatery with AMAZING service! I've expanded my tastes and tried Bun Bo Hue and several other options, all of which have been fantastic. from their spring rolls to the egg rolls with the fish sauce dipping sauce, The shaken beef is incredibly tender and full of flavor. Now, back to the PHO--the broth is so delicious that you really don't need to add much; just a squeeze of lime and some basil do the trick. I also like to order a side of onions and vinegar and add Hoisin and Sriracha to not alter the flavorful bright broth! The owner is so cool, he walks over to your table a few times throughout your visit to ask if everything is ok, and gives you recommendations, or strikes up conversation. one last thing the amount of meat this place adds to their bowls of soap is out of this world considering the quality, their tendon is top tier... DO not sleep on their Lime SODA.
google avatar

Sheldon C.

Yelp
Arguably the best Bun Bo Hue in the city. Cha gio is crunchy and delicious. Lots of options. One of my fav Vietnamese spots! Pandemic notes: - They have two tables in the front for outdoor dining. - Staff wears masks.

Nancy M.

Yelp
The pho is always Delicious can't recommend it enough. Their spring rolls are also very tasty, and I believe they make their own chili oil so so good. The owner can be spotted occasionally checking in on clients to make sure they're happy. Such a nice person always appears to be in a good mood.
google avatar

Victoria S.

Yelp
Delicious fresh food, big portions, friendly quick service & great affordable prices! They have the best spring rolls (crunchy inside) & the best egg rolls (light & fluffy with lots of lettuce to wrap). We also enjoyed our rice vermicelli salad with grilled pork, Thai ice tea & coke (free refills). Everything we ordered was under $10, where else can you get such a great meal at such a low cost!
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
This place was just alright. The only thing that stood out was the Shaken Beef. All of the other dishes we ordered were noodle soups, a rice porridge, and egg rolls which were fine. But it took at least 20 minutes for my Seafood Noodle Soup to come out. I was super disappointed because there wasn't even a lot of noodles in it. They were also broken up in the soup.
google avatar

Alice T.

Yelp
One of the better Vietnamese restaurant options in El Monte that has delicious food and it's reasonably priced. The restaurant itself is a bit on the smaller side and their parking lot is small. However, you can always park on the street if you're okay with that. I got a bun cha dish with grilled pork meatballs and egg rolls. The meatballs were just grilled before serving and the egg rolls were freshly fried and not oily at all. It was the perfect dish for any warm day. Portion was the right amount for the price. I love how they have Spanish on their menu to cater to the local demographic. It's a nice touch and gets others to explore other culture's cuisine.
google avatar

Marc N.

Yelp
It's a mediocre pho place. I think the spring rolls were supposed to be popular here but I didn't think they were that good. Ended up getting the Pho here with meat on the side as always, but I'd give the food 6/10. It's better than average but not too much better. More on the "thinner" side if that makes sense.
google avatar

Krispeken K.

Yelp
First time at this restaurant near my doctor craving for pho try their super big #1 pho is didn't disappoint soup is good and portions are good so it alone is 5-star but the only reason I put 4 star is due to the meat inside some are very hard to chew and we'll done other than that I would buy again. I usually eat my pho with goi cuon but they only sell 4 rolls for $11 while I can only eat 2 so hope in future they can sell a smaller portion.
google avatar

Edward L.

Yelp
3 years since pandemic that I haven't been to this place, omg, their pho is still the best, priced reasonably good, quality is no question. I have the pure steak pho, lots of meat and the soup, my god, don't know how to describe it. Come hungry, you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I can eat this weekly, probably more often if we have the choice to. Great pho broth, great meat and flavors. I often try other dishes and so far most are amazing as well! H Just good old comfort food from Viet Huong. Thumbs up as always. Thank you for all you make for us to enjoy. Oh by the way Ask them for oil and onions with hot sauce....... They have these little specialty add-ons if you know to get them. Just wow
