Yelp
Astoria's filled with a variety of diverse, high-quality options, such as this Brazilian steam table spot, one of a few in the neighborhood. I first came here many years ago after a trip to MoMI, but now that I have friends living nearby, this is pretty much a monthly stop for me.
Eating here is an exercise in meat-and-carbo-loading. My go-to is the always delicious corn pudding, but I've enjoyed many of their dishes, like feijoada (bean and pork stew), chicken spinach rolls, prime rib, fish, lasagna, and rice and beans. Sometimes the fried sweet plantains are tender and sweet, just the way I like 'em, but more often than not they're rubbery.
Step up to the order window in the back and you can get churrasco-style meats like hanger steak, sausages, chicken hearts, etc. It's a hit or miss; I've gotten really tender and juicy meat, but I've also gotten dry, chewy, unappetizing bricks.
They also have savory baked goods, along with a visually mouthwatering display of cakes, pastries, and other desserts behind the register. The pão de queijo is puffy, savory, and cheesy like a good one should be. Not a big fan of their sweets though. The queijadinha (coconut muffins with grated coconut, cheese, and condensed milk), guava cake, guava cheesecake, and coconut flan were all tooth-achingly sweet. You can give 'em a try if that's your thing.
It's a great neighborhood spot to get takeout or sit down and enjoy your meal with a tart, refreshing passion fruit juice.
