When I found out we were celebrating a rellie's bday in National City, I said, "WhoTF thought of going so far south?". However, after the kamayan dinner (where you eat a communal dinner on banana leaves w/ your hands), I was thankful for the experience I haven't had since I was a child. VM is on 8th St, not too far East of the 5 in National City (big Flip enclave in South San Diego near the border).
We enjoyed fried chicken, fried tilapia, lechon kawali, bangus (milkfish), grilled beef & pork, chicken & pork adobo, bicol express, pancit bihon (rice noodles), steamed shrimp, fried calamari, chicharrones, okra, green & yellow mango, and achara (pickled papaya). As if that wasn't enough, we also ordered lumpiang shanghai (skinny eggrolls) and bagoong rice (rice flavored w/ fermented shrimp paste). To top it off, we ordered two mega halo halos ($15.95) to share.
Although none of the dishes on it own stood out, the overall experience was amazing. I was on culinary overload. My fave dishes were the lechon, fried chicken and tilapia. I contrasted this savory dishes w/ bites of mango & achara in between: 5 Stars. Despite there being 20 of us, there were a ton of leftovers.
Likewise, the presentation of the mega halo halos was fantastic. Despite eating a ton, I always have room for halo halo after a Filipino meal (I had two servings! - LOL): 5 Stars.
Regarding the ambiance, its not too big of a place. However, the long table they gave us was perfect for us to eat and talk story during the meal. The other tables were spaced nicely to allow us plenty of room to move about and catch up: 5 Stars.
Surprisingly, we didn't overburden our young waitress with all our drink and special requests. She was on it and her service was stellar. The latter just added to the awesome overall experience.
Too bad Villa Manila wasn't closer. I'd be a regular (and fatter than I already am - hehe). The Filipino hospitality and good food shines like a diamond here!
