14 Carlsbad Restaurants to Check Out Right Now

"Its huge menu covers everything from the conventional (breakfast, sandwiches and salads) to the less conventional (fried chicken livers, a fisherman’s platter with beer-battered cod, and a homemade chicken pot pie, among a lot of other down-home treats). In short, there’s something for everyone, and that’s even before you hit dessert, where you get to choose from over a baker’s dozen of pies — keep an eye out for strawberry rhubarb and the sour cream raspberry." - Mike Schramm, Candice Woo

Google
I was pleasantly surprised by Village Kitchen & Pie Shop — the food was excellent, and the place itself is incredibly charming and cozy. The atmosphere makes you feel right at home, and the service was friendly and welcoming from the start. As a fan of country fried steak, I have to say theirs is one of the best I’ve had in all of San Diego. Cooked perfectly, flavorful, and comforting, exactly what you want from a classic dish like that. The bakery is also worth mentioning, the pies and pastries are really good and clearly made with care. I definitely need to come back with the family for breakfast. Highly recommended!

Google
We had a great breakfast! Our food came out so quickly and it was perfect. Our eggs were cooked to perfection. Our server was great. She was friendly and checked in on us often. There are beautiful flowers out front and in the back , so stop and take in their beauty as well. We will definitely be back!

Love this place's great food and great pies. Love the coffee here. The service is always awesome the food is served hot the waitress or waiters are very polite and helpful. The decor is great. We enjoy this place so much. It's a must-try place.

Google
Love this place. Been coming here since they opened ages ago. Breakfast is delicious. They also still have their breakfast specials that are extreamly reasonable. Since we tend to come early we normally get the specials. Last time we came my daughter got the pancake with 2 eggs and bacon special. I ended up with the 1/2 waffle, 2 eggs and bacon. Total together was around $20. Their sandwiches are great too. I love the cup of soup & half sandwhich combo with a slice of pie. Service is always quick and fast. Kid friendly and pies are great.

Google
The Village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe was very good. My girlfriend and I just stopped in this morning for the first time. Love to see it crowded as that tells me the eats are good. Loved seeing the delicious pies right when you enter the restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive by multiple individuals, and I appreciate the hospitality. We will be back soon.

Steve

Google
I have to say that the pies looked amazing, and that's really what made us decide to eat here. Unfortunately, after a huge sandwich and fries, there was no room to try a pie. The sandwiches were OK, but I feel you really need to get a pie here.

Google
My large, extended family was looking for a local, non-chain restaurant that would be something we couldn't get at home in Colorado for a yummy dinner while on vacation in California. The Village Kitchen and Pie Shop certainly fit the bill. There was something on the menu for the pickiest of our party of 9 people spanning ages 9-72, and the service was excellent. The portions were huge. The pie is a delicious way to cap off the meal.

Google
Great local restaurant. Good food and reasonable prices. We came yesterday and it was so good we decided to come again.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for years and can't believe I've never left a review. I recently visited for the first time in over a year and can't remember why it had been so long since my last visit. My husband and I were so excited to return, and our awesome server Ian made it even better with his enthusiasm and great suggestions. (His favorite pie is the peanut butter chocolate cream and it was in fact incredible!) we had such a wonderful time that we came back just a few days later for more. The menu has soooo many options including breakfast all day. Pasta, sandwiches, fish, even teriyaki flavors, this place has everything! Pie flavors are endless and everything tastes like it was cooked with love. I used to work with seniors and they would insist we come to the VK&PS at least once a month for their incredible prices and classic homestyle cooking. Generous servings too! During the pandemic my husband and I literally ordered whole pies for our sanity and at this point we've probably tried almost every flavor and highly recommend them! Plus nothing beats bringing a cinnamon roll or muffin home for breakfast the next day. Service is always fantastic! We will be coming back for more and more!

Yelp
I love this place I really do but tonight was a joke trying to simply order food to go I've been eating her for years and tonight the front register guy was terrible They double charged me, wrong order I found out after they charged me 73 dollars for a salad and 2 sandwiches then I go back in to tell them the guy doesn't know how to refund back to my card so charges me again the correct amount. Talk about pissed off. It's been months since I've been here and it will be months before I return They need some qualified people running the register not people who are clueless. Such a major disappointment because tonight's dinner to go was $130. Get it together pie shop!! You lost a good customer I'm not Rich ya know

Yelp
i have lived in North county for 25 years and had never heard of this restaurant until my good friend asked me a few weeks ago if I would like to go there for lunch. I have a super clean diet and don't eat out much because of the quality of food these days. I asked her if they had several things I do eat and she said yes, so I thought what the heck I will give it a try. WOW... I was super impressed, their turkey was real, not processed as most are and they even serve fresh vegetables with it. Now the downside ( ha ha) of this wonderful restaurant is their irresistible Pecan Buns. I don't eat sugar or gluten as I have Lyme disease and again limit my diet to avoid flare ups along with stress. Well, it's been years since I had a goodie, so I decided to go crazy and order one. LOL Oh my goodness, what an incredible treat! I didn't eat the whole thing as they are quite large, but the several bites I did have were like heaven. I have since eaten there several times and their breakfast is great too. I do have to refrain from the Pecan Buns, but I offer to buy one for whoever I go with so I can have a bite! Great place for reasonable and quality food as well as senior plates. Wish I had a picture maybe next time. You can't go wrong!

Yelp
Comfort food is a real thing Whether it be nostalgia or just something that makes you feel warm inside, comfort food makes us happy. What if there was a comfort restaurant? Village Kitchen and Pie Shoppe comes real close! Pie is one of my comfort foods....both sweet and savory....and Village Kitchen and Pie Shoppe does both very well. The chicken pot pie here is delicious. Fully packed with meaty goodness and topped with gravy, this pot pie delivers that comforting satisfaction. Not generally available for breakfast, this lunch dish is definitely worth the visit..even if you are too full for delicious sweet pie. I've had a few different sweet pies here and everything was very good. Boysenberry, Dutch Apple, and Coconut Cream are a few of my favorites...but you can't really go wrong. The selection changes frequently, so usually it's a good idea to go with what your server recommends. And, in spite of all the great food, the waitstaff might be the best part of this restaurant. Efficient, caring , and kind, the staff here has always taken care of me...probably why this restaurant is so comforting. Close to the freeway and with lots of parking...this spot is an easy win for sweet satisfaction and happiness! I'll be back for more pie!

Yelp
The food is pretty good. Great size portions as well. I ordered the BLT and some of their baked goods. The blueberry muffin, banna bread, and pecan roll are amazing! The staff is always friendly!

Yelp
My favorite stop in Carlsbad ! It's delicious. The pie never fails . The service is friendly and helpful . They keep the tables clean and clear of clutter. It's a family style resturant with a cute patio for outside seating . They have a parking lot . It gets busy at peak hours . Full menu.

Yelp
Picked up pumpkin and banana cream pies for Thanksgiving. Online ordering was super easy and only took a few minutes. Pick up was also efficient on the day before Thanksgiving - they are a well-oiled machine! Most people there were friendly, but this one lady gave me a little attitude and pointed "look" when I asked her for a bag. The pies were delicious and an absolute hit! I'll definitely be back to try some of their other pies.

Yelp
I've been here a few times for the pie, and I've always been very impressed. This place reminds me of an old school diner with great tasting food, affordable prices, and tasty pies. The service is good and straight to the point. The employees aren't going to chit-chat for hours before you even make your drink orders. So normally I would come for the pies but one time I actually sat down for some food and I was impressed. It was good

Raymond N.

Yelp
Great local spot that has an amazing bakery but serves home cooked comfort foods. It's like an old fashioned diner with excellent service and delicious food. Our go to spot when we're in the north coast. I especially love the coconut pineapple muffins.

Yelp
My food was good and the pie was good, but until they get the women's bathroom to a normal state, I won't go back. Just get a taller toilet instead of stacking two seats on top of eachother!

Yelp
I was in the mood for a chicken pot pie. I hate to say it, but the chicken was dry and the crust was mid. KFC has a better one. But at least it has a cozy greasy spoon vibe.
google avatar

Dante G.

Yelp
Was in SD for a day and Village Kitchen was such a treat. The food is so good and the whole vibe is cozy. Everyone was really nice and they let us stay for a while after we were done with our meal to catch up on remote work. I'd recommend getting the chorizo scramble.

Yelp
The owner has responded. He claims that the ADA has forced him to change the former men's room to gender-neutral. That may be, but what he fails to tell you is that he could have made the OTHER room a men's room, or made both rooms gender neutral. The latter, of course, would eliminate any gender discrimination. But instead, he responds with, "this is the best we are able to do with what we have to offer." This is patently false, and quite frankly an affront to the male population! He then apologizes for the inconvenience. That's all good & well, but an apology doesn't solve the ongoing gender discrimination.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. For me it's comfort food at its finest and reminds me of the food I grew up eating. Plus PIE! I arrived to meet a girlfriend who took a little longer than me to get there. As I was walking up to the restaurant a lady walked by me telling me how full she was and how she loved it here so much she drives all the way from San Clemente. Then I sat on a bench outside to wait and watched the sweetest interaction with one of the owners. He held the door open for an older woman as she was leaving and she thanked him profusely. She explained that she had been coming here since it opened and that she remembers his dad running the restaurant and how they moved for a time due to a fire? He confirmed and thanked her. She asked if he was related to the man she remembered. He replied that he and his brother run it and they are his sons. She was so happy to hear it and complimented him on his looks. He was patient and thoughtful in his answers and complimented her back. Both walked away with a smile. My friend arrived and we were escorted to a booth of choice. Several servers stopped to ask about a drink order and to ask if we were ready to order. I ordered a combo with half a club sandwich, soup or salad and a piece of pie. It's a good deal. This place isn't fancy but it's very Americana diner style. Tons of regulars and very homey.

Yelp
This is a quintessential, homey, and cozy diner hidden in a corner of Carlsbad! The servers and cashiers are eager to help and check in on you, which feels very personal. I got the chocolate banana cream pie to-go for a celebration, and it was perfect! The thick chocolate mousse balances the light fluffy cream and banana filling really well. The $23 price is also a plus - very affordable for a large, house-made pie like this. I would definitely come back!

Yelp
Came to pick up some slices of pie plus some other sweet treats for my birthday. Honestly, it was pretty bad. 6pm on a Sunday night and everyone seemed very flustered and not welcoming. I had to keep moving around to see who could help me order some slices. I'm assuming there should be a dedicated person for the bakery side? Ordered peach, strawberry rhubarb, key lime and sour cream berry, lemon cake and pecan roll. As the gentleman helping me pulls out the tray of peach, another lady yells at him that those are being saved and shoves them back into the display. So they exchange words. The peach crust was so unbelievably salty, it was so gross and the peaches were sliced but left as whole half chunks of peaches... like they didn't even bother to actually slice them. The key lime tasted like condensed milk, lime flavor was missing and the crust was dust. So essentially there was no crust as it was disintegrated at bottom of container. I wanted to come try the dining side of the restaurant but after that experience, Really disappointing as this is supposed to be a pie shoppe.... I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Joseline L.

Yelp
As always great food, and service. We came today to celebrate my birthday and we got a complementary slice of pecan pie. Our server was Tory, and she was awesome. The place gets pretty busy, but they do a great job at taking care of everyone in a timely manner. The ambience is pretty lay back, you can have a conversation without yelling.
google avatar

Sierra S.

Yelp
I travel to SD County quit often and this is one of my usual stops, it's right off the fwy ez on-ez off. The ambiance is cozy, the staff is friendly, and the pie selection is eye poppin & catching . The food presentation was nicely done and equally delicious. The only downside is they open at 8am but worth the wait.
google avatar

Toni A.

Yelp
Found this gem of a place from a general google search for "Key Lime Pie" in the area! A co-workers birthday was coming up and his favorite dessert is KLP! I was happy to learn about this pie shop and the fact that is a whole little restaurant too! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. It gave the feeling of being very small town bakery/cafe. While I didn't eat anything but the pie, I can tell you it was delicious and worth every penny. Hope to come back with co workers soon for lunch and a slice of another type of pie! Gotta try em all Only draw back was the parking situation, very limited. (I had to ask the gas station if I could park there while I ran in an picked up the bday pie) but it is what it is.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great place! Pie - perfect! Many kinds, fresh made, pecan, sour cream cherry, apple, berries, key lime... fantastic- we have to try more. Breakfasts- made to order- we all had something different, Senior/lighter menu too. Fast service, great servers!
google avatar

Nell C.

Yelp
We came here to buy a pie for Pi Day and decided to stayed for dinner. Good food and great service. Interior has a diner vibe, is clean and intimate. The Strawberry Rhubarb Crunch pie was lovely and ingredients are VERY FRESH! You can tell it was freshly made.
google avatar

Heidi G.

Yelp
We stop by Village Kitchen & Pie Shoppe everyone we drive down to and from San Diego. The food is good but their pies are fantastic. Cherry pie and a few pastries are our go tos. Service is always excellent and always with a smile. The ambiance is warm and welcoming. That's appreciated after usually being stuck in traffic.
google avatar

Doris Z.

Yelp
Love that they have a patio so I can bring my dog with me. We were seated very quickly for Saturday brunch. Steak and eggs and sticky bun were both delicious. The food portion was generous. Plenty of food selections. Also very affordable.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
Did you know you get a free piece of pie on your birthday at the Village Kitchen and Pie shoppe? We didn't either. My parents used to come here all the time. I wonder if they knew? While visiting my daughter she asked if we could go get pie for lunch on her birthday. Sure, why not. There are so many different pies. I had my favorite, lemon meringue and she had apple along with a cup of coffee. Everything was delicious. It was about 2 pm on a Tuesday in August and the place was jumping. The waitress were all very nice by the way. I will stop by again on my next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's go! One of our favorite breakfast meals while visiting. The service was friendly and prompt. The food was plenty and very affordable, especially for the area. We ordered from the morning breakfast specials since it was before 11 AM on a weekday. This definitely saved us some money. Our German foreign exchange student ordered the Country Morning, which he clearly loved because he did not come up for air until he finished. We had the Choice of Meat with eggs, ham, potatoes, and toast. Although a very standard American breakfast, it hit the spot, especially the ham. Wish we would have saved room because their pies looked amazing. They offered a wide variety, also.
google avatar

Deb B.

Yelp
Great little café restaurant with an extensive pie menu. Their menu includes variety of breakfast, options, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and dinners. I opted for the salmon dinner, and everything was cooked to perfection. Everyone at the table, enjoy their food, and our waitress made sure that we had our drinks filled and we're happy with our meals. There was a retro vibe which was very nice. it felt like stepping back into the 1960s due to the menu and decor. The prices were very reasonable. Our party of four left with three pies. I had the cherry pie, which was delicious. It was full of plump, sweet cherries, and oh, the crust... true perfection! Definitely plan to return.
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
Traveling this morning and so glad we stopped here for breakfast. We follow reviews and this place rises to the top. Omlettte, fried eggs, pancakes, toast, potato choices and coffee were all fresh, hot and delicious! Our server Rae was attentive, cheerful and very friendly! Hope to see you again on our next 300 mile trip south. (I just know we're going to be sad we didn't grab a pie to take home this morning)
google avatar

Aaron K.

Yelp
This diner is the perfect spot for some home cooking & home made pies. Huge portions big enough to share. I read an earlier about the prices being high. Have you eaten anywhere outside your bubble? The prices here are amazingly fair. Tory our server took her time to explain the menu & what is in season. She was super friendly, responsive & personable. We even got a free slice of pie of her choice for my wife's birthday.
google avatar

Caroline K.

Yelp
Great food w diner vibes! They have great sets for senior meals. The service was so friendly and quick. Make sure to try their pies!! We are a huge fan of their banana cream pie.
google avatar

Jack B.

Yelp
One of the few remaining "diners" in North County. The menu is extensive and the portions are large. The bakery items are all delicious and you will be tempted to buy some to take home.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
The food is priced fairly for the large portions they give! Well worth the money. Customer service is excellent! The owner is particularly wonderful, but the staff is just as great. Customers are treated warmly and checked on often. Food is delivered in a timely manner! Everything is clean as well. The cinnamon rolls are especially wonderful.

Debbie M.

Yelp
Service was okay, it wasn't excellent but not anything where I would need to complain. The food was okay. My husband decided to try the potato cake that was one of the options for your side and it was floury tasting and very bland. We ordered two pies to go, they looked amazing. Strawberry rhubarb and dutch apple. The crumbles on both have oatmeal as part of the crumble but when you eat the pie it is like you have part of the apple core or the skin in your mouth because the oatmeal feels hard and you want to spit it out. Both pies were really sweet in my opinion. Almost too sweet that it took the taste away from the actual fruit. In summary, despite the nice reviews I wouldn't have any desire to return. I was disappointed mostly in the pies since it seemed that was the highlight of the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Great pie. Very friendly service. Welcoming place. My aunt and cousin have been regular customers for many, many years.

Yelp
Never really paid much attention to eating at this spot but dang, total hidden gem. Came in on a Friday morning and it was already packed. Luckily I was seated pretty quick and the servers are just as quick to get your order. Love how they were able to recommend some of the popular items on the menu. Might go to breakfast is normally eggs. Benedict or corned beef hash. The server recommended the corn, beef, hash, crunchy, and that was simply amazing. Mixed in with my over easy eggs, and ended my meal with a slice of, coconut custard pie. Great meal, the owners were out there working alongside all the servers which made it even more personable. Come check this place out!

Yelp
Pregnancy Cravings had me dreaming of a Chicken Fried Steak for a solid week. Luckily, we were driving down to San Diego, and I had a chance to finally stop into Carlsbad for this specific diner! The parking lot is huge but fills out quickly. We got in at around 8am and luckily snagged a spot as a patron was leaving. Walking in, we're immediately greeted by a huge display of fresh pies. The owner from behind the counter also got a hello in before we were guided into the dining room. Our server had her hands full but was friendly and prompt. Food came out fresh and quick with only about a 10-15 minutes wait. Chicken Fried Steak ($16) - This is, by far, the best chicken fried steak I've had, like ever. Country gravy was decadent, and steak was crispy and flavorful even without the gravy. House fries were also yummy, seasoned very well. Value to the portion given with this meal is such a steal! You need to try this! Husband got a special, which included a waffle, eggs, and bacon, with a dollop of super spreadable butter. ($9) Pie slices run for about $5 a slice, we tried the Banana Cream Pie and the Apple Pie, and both were delicious. The crust is perfect! Banana Cream Pie was my favorite, though! Definitely recommend this spot, and can't wait to visit again!

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Best breakfast I have eaten out in a really long time. I will def. be returning. I had eggs benedict. The hollandaise sauce had such a delicate flavor.

Yelp
I have always enjoyed eating at Village Kitchen and Pie. The food is consistent and the service is always great. Then there is the treats. The baked goods are unique and very impressive Thank you for being so great to my family and friends
google avatar

Yelp
I have been a loyal customer and can honestly say, I've never had a bad meal here. I introduced family and friends to it years ago, and it's a nice place to meet up (being right next to the freeway). The pies and muffins are a must if you have a sweet tooth! I like the chocolate coconut creme pie, my mother loves their pineapple coconut muffins. ENJOY!!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for half sandwich, salads and a slice of pie. Generous portions and great service.

Yelp
Been coming here since we moved to Carlsbad back in 2001, found it one day after surfing, and have always loved it since! The staff and owners are the best of the best, always kind and welcoming, and the service is always top notch. The food is amazing and the pies are to die for! The place reminds me of when I ate my grandmothers cooking, even the kitchen and restaurant smells like her old house, which I love and miss so much. This place will always be special to us.

Cristina R.

Yelp
Amazing service and muffins! The owner Chris and his brother Craig were super friendly! Fast service! Yummy eggs Benedict and muffins! Awesome place to eat!!!

Yelp
Amazing Ribeye and eggs and service is always amazing! Highly recommended! Atmosphere is superb...

Yelp
The Village Kitchen and Pie Shoppe is an oasis for those wanting simple family style home cooking. I have dined here a number of times when visiting friends in San Diego. The most recent visit was for dinner. Greeted at the front by the manager, promptly seated at a booth, but changed to a table for ease of seating, when our other friend arrived. They have a very extensive menu selection; be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Plus, they serve breakfast all day. They have a "Senior Meals" section that is a deal. Soup or salad, entrée, and a special dessert, for under $15 ! Had the fish & chips, coleslaw, with soup of the day, and the special desert was pineapple dined there a number upside down cake! The fish were perfect, not greasy, or over breaded. Their tartar sauce was excellent. Coleslaw not runny. My one friend had his favorite Wednesday special "Beef Stroganoff." He also splurged with slice of banana crème pie. My other friend enjoyed his meal as well. Our server was Fernando, he was on top of everything; beverage refills, requests for more ketchup, tartar sauce, rolls, butter, and napkins. Everything came out hot and quick. Splitting the check was no problem. Outstanding service, very professional. I might also add they are very welcoming to Veterans. Restroom was spotlessly clean and well-supplied. Great website with menu prices shown, thank you.

Yelp
Glad we finally tried this place today and I will definitely will be back. We were in the mood for a large breakfast and someplace with plenty of options and VKPS fit the bill. They have so many options to choose from, and even with sections like Omelets they have so many choices. I got the Mexican Chicken omelet which also comes with some sides (several options), I chose the potato pancake, and the cinnamon roll for my sides. The omelet was very large, tasty, and hit the spot. The potato pancake was a little different from what I am used to but it tasted great. It also comes with apple sauce and sour cream. The cinnamon roll was large and smothered in frosting. I was looking very forward to it but it was dry, not very flavorful, and the icing was not very delectable at all. I prefer cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting and that are moist and taste delicious.

Yelp
Awesome food but I'm here for the pies!! There's a whole front pie galore of choices. They are all delicious so save room for it! When I'm season get the strawberry ones. Service is excellent, they are aware of refills when you need it, it's already in front of you. The place is homey. Tables outside are available as well.

Yelp
Pie review: Wonderful. Full of flavor. Great crust. Pie filling to crust ratio perfect. I actually got a piece of cherry pie for the first time and had to come back 2 days later for another slice. It's too good! I find the food here to be very mediocre. The prices are very cheap, which is great, but expect mediocre food. Specially, I found my hash browns to lack flavor (no seasoning). Everything else was fine. I'd eat here again if I were in a pinch, but it wouldn't top my list of places to eat. Everyone was nice. You definitely get a diner feel when you enter the establishment. Nice large parking lot (and it's free!).

Yelp
Love this small local kitchen cafe that employs local residents! Great home cooking and have enjoyed every breakfast menu we have tried. Today we tried lunch for the first time and were not disappointed. Our Server, Tory, recommended the Rueben with onion rings and she was spot on! My husband had the Roast beef Camino sandwich and enjoyed every last bite. Tory was very engaged and attentive during our stay. Lastly, the pies are excellent! We usually pick up slices every other week and they are always freshly baked. A great spot to find good food, good service and supports a local family!

Emily B.

Yelp
Don't come for coffee. They use powdered milk in the cappuccinos and lattes. Yuck! No other milk drinks. Came here with my mom. Embarrassing!

Yelp
Magnificent, corn beef, one of the best tasting I've had three slabs, extra spuds, carrots, cabbage , quantity, and flavor is amazing
