The 18 Best Bars On The Upper West Side

"Like the other locations of Vin Sur Vingt around the city, this UWS outpost is a good spot for a quiet drink with one other person or a small group. It’s a small, brick-walled wine bar where you can also get some snacks, like tartines and shareable charcuterie plates. Plus, the long, all-French wine list has over 50 options available by the glass, and you can even try things in flights of three or five glasses." - will hartman, bryan kim, neha talreja, matt tervooren

Vin Sur Vingt Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Like the other locations of Vin Sur Vingt around the city, this UWS outpost is a good early-in-the-game date spot. It’s a small, brick-walled wine bar filled with good smells from the food being made behind the bar, like tartines and shareable charcuterie plates. The long, all-French wine list has over 50 options available by the glass, and you can also try things in flights of three or five glasses." - Matt Tervooren

The seating outside is lovely. The wine is excellent. A glass of chilled white wine on a hot spring summer is absolutely perfect. The food was abhorrent. The chicken & lemon confit salad was so badly done with hard pieces of chicken and weird tasting dressing. The olives were ok because the kitchen likely had nothing to do but serve them in a dish. I would come back for wine but skip the food.

We had a lovely evening at Vin Sur Vingt. The cozy atmosphere and unusually warm winter night made sitting outside a pleasure. Our server informed us that they open new bottles daily, ensuring freshness. We ordered three different red wines, all excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our time and will definitely return. Vin Sur Vingt offers a relaxed, intimate setting perfect for wine enthusiasts. Highly recommended.

Lovely wine list and cheese and charcuterie plate! Lots of great wine options and very cute outdoor cafe seating, definitely a Parisian vibe. Cheeses were great! Shrimp was also tasty.

I enjoyed this place, I went extremely late around 10:47pm. The kitchen was closing so ordering food had to be done immediately. I ordered the SOUPEÀ L'OIGNON (I’ve never had French onion soup before and ALWAYS have wanted to try it) it was ABSOLUTELY amazing! In addition, I also tried Tarte Flambee De Potrion, it was tasty but wasn’t what I expected at all. I wouldn’t order it again. My friend ordered the Escargot, I wouldn’t have a clue if those were delicious or not. Not really into eating snails BUT to each his own. Lol The glass of wine I decided on was the Alsace Kuentz-Bas Riesling Cuvee Tradition. I’m a Riesling type of girl, I’ve also noticed these days that finding Riesling is a rarity but maybe not at a wine bar so that brought me joy. I would definitely return mostly because of the classy atmosphere it was really cute. 7.5/10

Google
It is a small and very elegant place with a parisian chic in the heart on the UWS. It's a real French wine bar with a big variety of French wines 🍷 it is clear they know their business. You could find mostly bottles but also some glasses. A good selection of food to accompany the wine like cheese, charcuterie, salads and sea food. Good music and very good vibes.

Katie Tingle

Google
Service was extremely prompt but not very helpful - definitely not the place to learn about what you're drinking! The wine list is extensive but so many of the wines on it weren't available. Additionally, they've stopped doing flights, something they should change on the menu.

Google
Great wine bar. Service is always great and we love the casual atmosphere. Great selection of wines by the glass and really enjoy the onion soup and tartines. We love coming here.

Google
Charming French wine bar tucked away. Fun buzzing atmosphere and great service. We were there during happy hour and they have a selection of four wines available by the glass for $10. We tried three of the four and and they were all winners. The waiter was liberal with pouring us healthy portions and gave us all a minor refill on the house (after our second round). Escargot! Delicious. Ratatouille! Yum! Cheese order seemed a little overpriced but it’s New York.

Yelp
Adorable neighborhood spot. The interiors are cozy and dim, and the service feels familiar. We got a cheese to start, and it was very creamy. My steak focaccia sandwich was hearty and delicious, and my husband's bœuf bourguignon was winter comfort in a cocotte. The molten chocolate cake for dessert was a good size (aka not too big) and a lovely dessert.

Yelp
All French wine all the time. We sat at the bar for a delicious glass of the French white they pour for happy hour (4-6). Our bartender who was Latino joked he was the only thing not French at the bar! We had just been at Museum of Natural History planetarium and needed to come back to earth! Bartender was nice. Wine was super nice. All inside and outside tables were filled with French wine lovers enjoying a 5 PM glass. Food menu looks good so we will return. Feels a lot like Paris on W 84th! A votre sante! Salut!

Yelp
Great spot for an intimate date night! I went for one drink before a movie and sat at the bar and the staff was very helpful and friendly. They had a good selection of wines and the atmosphere was great to chat but also with a nice dim lit vibe and music. I didn't have any food but they also have bites as well. Cute wine bar in the UWS that I would go back to.

Yelp
Grabbed drinks with a friend and had a pleasant experience. I've been to a couple locations and all the places seem to have stuff on the menu that they don't have, so there wasn't a lot to pick from. Service was great and the place was super intimate. Would come back to this location over others.

Yelp
10/10 vibes thanks to victor. He was the best server and was so kind and thoughtful. We WILL be back- purely to see victor

Yelp
I love this place! This place is the cutest. All the staff that work there are lovely. The waiter we had made great wine suggestions. We were there on a hot summer day, and he brought out the perfect white wine for the season. I also really appreciated that the suggestions they made were not only delicious but economical. The place itself is so cute, makes you feel like you are at a little wine cafe in Italy. Even though the inside is small they do a great job with the decor. We also got some food there. I will say the appetizers we got weren't my favorite. We got the artichoke one and a Cesar salad. But the entrees were delicious! We had ravioli and pasta and they were delicious. We will definitely be back here!

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere of this wine bar. The wine selection was great and the bartender remembered our order when we went to get a refill. We look forward to coming back.

Yelp
Probably my least favorite vin sur location in the city because of service. Love the cozy romantic ambiance. However, the service leaves much to be desired. All vin sur locations across the city have the same menu.

JJ G.

Yelp
Everything about this place is great, from the warm and friendly service to the wide-ranging wine list and the newly revamped food menu. The music is happy and fun! My ONLY complaint: There is some scaffolding out in front of the space with some blinding and nasty white lighting. I assume it's a security issue for the neighborhood since it can get dark under that scaffolding. PLEASE place some kind of dark covering on those small windows that are above the door. That white light absolutely kills the soft light inside the space and totally ruins the vibe in the room. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of meat and cheese Decent Happy Hour Wine The reason i'm not giving it more stars is due to the $$$ nature of what was being offered. I think for what it is, there are better neighborhood options that are better bang for buck. Otherwise, great vibe and experience but maybe not worth the price tag.

Yelp
Neighborhood meeting place. Intimate seating with a great "tasting menu". Knowledgeable and friendly staff willing to help your order. Cheese selection and wine pairings were well matched, with a fresh basket of bread.

Yelp
The two of us visited Vin Sur Vingt on a rainy Thursday night at about 7 pm. When we arrived, there was one person waiting for a table. When we entered the tiny dining room there were five available tables- one in a very dark corner (in an already very dark restaurant) and three in the center of the room: two tables for four and one teeny table for two. We asked to sit at the table for four closest to the front of the restaurant, and the host asked us to sit at the empty bar. We said we would prefer to sit at a table. He directed us to the tiny table for two. (Again, there was only one other person there waiting for a table.) The host hesititated and then directed us to the table for four closest to the kitchen. After seating us, he put the other table for four and table for two side-by-side and seated the young woman waiting for her friends. By the time we had ordered our wine and were considering our meal, another person joined the tables (now) prepared for six. We enjoyed our delicious Beef Bourguignon (tiny portions elegantly presented in two one-cup sized cassoulet pots) and paid our bill. There were still only two people at the table for six. Pros: They have a terrific wine list and delicious food. Cons: Hospitality is lacking, cassoulet portions tiny. Expensive. Were I to return, I would sit (in good weather) at an outdoor table, possibly at the bar, but I would only order an appetizer and glass of wine- maybe a salad.

Yelp
Best place on UWS. And arguably NYC. Quaint local feel with incredible food, wine, and even better service. Somehow you feel like royalty and at home all in the same Spot. Love this place l.

Yelp
The food was enjoyable and the servings were very generous. The prices are acceptable because of the large portions.

Yelp
We had a magnificent evening eating and drinking wine on the sidewalk in front of Vin Sur Vingt. The servers were fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke French with us. They had a marvelous Pommard Premier Cru and the Foie Gras was delicious. I will probably go here every time i am in New York in the future. I wish I had found this sooner

Yelp
Dark wine bistro. Yes it does get loud and yes the small plates are very small, but the wine is tres bon. The cassoulet ($18) was about a one cup portion and was really just a really good gravy with just a few small pieces of meat and potato. Escargots ($15) were 6. The butter was good. Wine bottles start at $55, and ours was excellent. The place is so cute - it's what you have to pay nowadays - a bottle of wine and two small apps $120 with tax and tip. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
Great little wine bar. Nice staff good prices chill vibe. Had a good crowd and good selection of food.

Yelp
Food amazing, service outstanding, NY ambiance I will return with my daughter who recommended it !!! My daughter Lives in the city .. I live in CA

Yelp
Like being on a side street in Paris. This is a beautiful French wine bar. Highly recommend the Crème de Bleu (10$) and their white Cote du Rhône (15). The prices are reasonable for the area and setting: it's a lovely place to sit and take in the evening. You can certainly eat dinner there or proceed to another place for dinner. Staff is friendly and very helpful in choosing food and wine.

Yelp
Feels like you're truly at a French bistro. Small table setting (groups of 2-4 only), great menu of small plates, with a wonderful wine menu, tucked quietly away between Columbus and CPW. Food was delicious and somehow, was managed by one fantastic waiter who was able to eloquently handle service for all tables at the restaurant. Exactly what I was hoping for and will absolutely be back!

Jonathan F.

Yelp
$22 glass of wine and that was on the lower end of the price scale. And good luck figuring out the prices as the menu's are worn out with price changes written in pen.. This could be the biggest rip off in NYC and that's saying a lot. And lastly, use some of the money from your 1000% markup and bring in a professional cleaning crew as the inside stinks really bad. Even though it was 90 and humid outside, I opted to deal with the humidity because of how bad it smelled inside. If you want to get ripped off while holding your nose, I suggest running, not walking, to this place..

Yelp
The best! Great wine selection and friendliness of staff. Oh yeah and the food is wonderful too.

Yelp
Vin Sur Vingt never disappoints. Everything is good, but the French onion soup, boeuf bourguignon, and gateau au chocolat are MUST HAVEs. Enjoy delicious food and wine in a warm, cozy atmosphere with friendly service.
google avatar

Josephine L.

Yelp
Even the most mediocre company can be elevated by stopping by VSV for a slice of Paris-lite decor: candles, low lighting, wicker furniture, checkered tablecloths--this place is every French stereotype come to life, in the best way possible. The wine selection is equally magnifique, with vineyards both known and unknown well-represented. Service is a bit slow and spotty, even when the place is nearly empty--but that's also very French. ;)
google avatar

Yelp
The service is impeccable, and the ones selections are amazing. Great tapas style offerings for food. The ambience is out of this world. Looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Visited this wine bar last night around 5:45pm for drinks and food with my sister and we had such a lovely time. We were pleasantly surprised to find out they had happy hour until 6pm. There's a cozy vibe, very dimly lit, the service was good and we all enjoyed our time. Perfect midday, chill hang out spot in UWS.

Yelp
Bad. Bad food. Bad service. Sent raw burger back twice before giving up and leaving. The air conditioner was blowing directly on us it was freezing.
google avatar

Joanita G.

Yelp
My go to for a quick glass of wine (or two) and a delicious Croque Monsieur sandwich! The food is always delicious, service prompt and great, and the wine fantastic! This is by far my favorite solo lunch or dinner restaurant in the UWS!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazed I didn't discover this place sooner! Fantastic food, fantastic wine, and the BEST service. The staff was helpful, friendly, and seem to genuinely love what they do. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I came here the other day for my lunch break away from the office. Working across the street makes the Plaza Food Hall convenient for both lunch and happy hour options. This particular food stall is a favorite. Food offered is well seasoned, fresh and pairs well with the selection of wines available. On my last visit I ordered the quinoa bowl which is served cold with quinoa, sweet potato, goat cheese tomatoes and a warm broiled piece of salmon. Flavors complimented each other and paired well with the Chardonnay my server recommended. He also very kindly gave me a complimentary glass of champagne at the completion of my meal. The staff her is always helpful and friendly. I consider this walk across the street, delicious meal and friendly environment an addition to my self care routine in a stuffy stressful office setting.
google avatar

Yelp
When a business tells you "we don't want your business" I'm willing to take them at their word. I'll never order from them again, and i'll do my best to help other people avoid the mistake of doing business with them. Ordered from them from seamless. They deleted items, did not contact us, and when I called them told me, in exact words "I don't want to talk to you, I don't care" They apparently are "place and pickup" and don't have any interest in whether they give good service. Take your business to someone who cares and doesn't say rude things to customers. They charge 18% service fee for this charming attitude. Adding insult to injury, the food is at best mediocre. There are multiple better choices within 10 blocks.

Yelp
I went here on a Thursday night for dinner and drinks. The place immediately gave off a very warm and welcoming vibe, especially on a cold & windy night! There were quite a few people at the cozy bar, but there were seats available for dining. We were impressed by the vast selection of wines, our waitress (who by the way was adorably French and her mere presence transported me to Paris~~) was very helpful in assisting with our selection of a bottle. Once we had decided on a wine, we then turned our attention to the menu. The menu is also very classically french and felt like something straight out of Europe. We ordered the escargot, tuna tartare, croque monsieur, AND the croque madame (comes with an egg). We were also given a nice basket of warm, crisp bread which they kept refilled throughout the meal. We absolutely loved the escargot and were very satisfied with our choice of sandwiches. This is a very cute spot for a glass of wine and a bit of French cuisine on the UWS. Would come back with a date or with friends!

Yelp
Great service. Adorable neighborhood cozy wine bar. Tuna Tartare a bit fishy and too many filler veggies. Needed more olive oil, citrus and salt & better quality tuna ~*** Croque Monsieur was crazy good cheesy madness. Lovely salads with both. Bread in bread basket basic & boring not crusty crunch to crust and lacking and flavor. Bread toasts were lack luster. No olive oil, no salt or seasonings were evident in food and definitely not on table.

Yelp
My friends just came from Central Park on a lovely spring evening and wanted to grab a drink small bites. We found this wine bar nestled on 84th between Columbus and CPW. We had a lovely bottle of red Domaine Le Colombier (Vacqueyras) and decided to have some cassolettes and tartines. The casollettes are cheaper the more you get, 3 for $32 or 5 for $54 (individually they are $12-$14). We had the ratatouille, meatball, and boeuf bourguignon. It came with a lot of different types of bread and the casolletes were perfectly portioned and extremely tasty. My friend had the tartine au brie du miel which also looked amazing, the perfect mix of sweet and savory. Our servers were lovely and gave great recommendations. If you are in a hurry, this place is not for you. My only regret was not coming at Happy Hour when bottles of rosé are half-priced.
google avatar

Amber Z.

Yelp
I don't take this topic lightly but this is the Salade niçoise I have had...including those in France. The service was impeccable and the wine was out of this world. Do not miss the house rose or the bubbly in any form. Gluten free friends, don't pass this one up.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
This little spot packs a big punch in terms of service, quality, and atmosphere. It seems a lot of care went into creating the wine list, it is extensive with something for every palate and budget. We chose a Cotes du Rhone that was absolutely wonderful! The menu was interesting and it was difficult to decide on just one item. We ordered steak tartare & the 3 fromage & 3 charcuterie plate. This was probably enough for the four of us-but we also ordered salads and ratatouille. We were all very pleased with the service-very attentive-and the timing of meals was perfect. This is a small place and we didn't have a regular sized table-so i'd suggest calling ahead if you have a bigger party. We went in not even expecting to be able to get a spot, so we were extremely pleased with our cozy corner of tables! In a big city like NY, it's hard to find something that really stands out as being high quality, but also friendly on the wallet. I was so impressed and will be recommending this place to all people I know! Nice work Vin Sur Vingt!

Yelp
Not a bad spot to get a glass of wine or a bite to eat at a French inspired bar/restaurant. My wife and I decided to stop by on a weekday night. It wasn't too busy. The weather was nice enough that they had the accordion doors open. We chose to sit at a table outside. We both ordered a glass of red wine, and some olives to share. The wine tasted good, but I couldn't shake with the price I paid for a glass, I could have bought a bottle. That really is my only nitpick of the place -- the prices all seem a bit high. The service was fine. I imagine I will try other places in the area before stopping by here again.

Anne B.

Yelp
The husband and I went last night. After we sat down and our ordered glasses of wine arrived, the waiter confided that the only food on offer was a few main courses. Feeling slightly snookered, I ordered beef stew, and the husband ordered chicken pot pie. The food, I guess made elsewhere and reheated, was indifferent. Strangely, the stew came with a side of drained macaroni pasta. Given the price tag, I was unimpressed. As we wandered off, the husband remarked that it hadn't been much of a success. The two stars are for the graceful and efficient waiter who seemed to have the place to himself.

Yelp
Cute new wine bar upper west side with wonderful service and a large wine selection. Trois mois, 3 months new per the friendly French bartender We were upper west, saw this was a nearby "hot and new" place, and wanted to check it out. Bartender was very friendly, let me taste a couple wines before I decided on a fantastic Bordeaux. I was even able to use a few of the basic phrases I remember from college French with him and he shared a couple new ones. Atmosphere is nothing over the top, basic simple and cute. Not wow-some, but a charming, cozy neighborhood wine bar feel and was surprised when I noticed there are several other locations throughout the city as it does not have a chain type feel. Negative: closes early. We arrived around 1130 and the kitchen was closed, and they were closing up, turning off the lights to close the restaurant around 1150 ish as if to say time to go! We were the only people there except a few people at a table that I assume work there.

Yelp
Adorable little gem that's tucked away on the side streets of the uws. This place literally makes you feel like you're somewhere other than NYC. It's normally packed whenever I go, but maybe that's because I always end up going there during the weekends. Service can be a bit slow, as I have seen only one server work there on couple occasions (which doesn't make sense to me at all). Luckily, the server was fast and trying to be attentive as possible. They have an extensive wine menu, but not nearly as much for single glass options. It would be great if they offered carafes so that customers could try more wines on their menu. They could use some updates in their operations, but in either case, it's a great place to stop by for a glass of wine and some cheese/charcuterie.
google avatar

Rosaria C.

Yelp
loved this place! really wonderful staff with amazing service. we got there right when they opened thinking we would be the first ones there and there were multiple tables already seated. The rosé was some of the best i've ever had and they have amazing charcuterie boards. Great food and great staff will come back again and again.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
Vin Sur Vingt is my absolute favorite wine bar. Small, cozy, has character. Feels like a cute little neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Jeff O.

Yelp
As far as wine bars go, pretty solid. Only two criticisms: The music ('90s ballads) and the stemware (for flights at least) could be much better. Otherwise very good. For the wine flights, you can build your own from like 50 really varied selections. For the food, we tried the brie tartine and the pork belly salad, and both were excellent. They've got a deli slicer on the counter so I assume the charcuterie is fresh and delish. Also the staff greets you in French, which adds a certain je ne sais quoi, and they even comp'd us a couple of 3/4 glasses of sparkling rose. So yeah, definitely a spot everyone should give a try.

Yelp
What a gem of a place! Transport yourself to a romantic wine bar in France for the evening. It has the cutest, warmest ambience that you can find in the UWS. There is a simple counter in front of a huge wine rack, and then the rest of the floor is open with chairs along the middle and the walls. They serve happy hour deals, and I was delighted to snag a glass of Beaujoulais right before it ended. It was delicious! We ordered french onion soup, chicken confit, and a trio of cassolettes: salmon, duck, and boeuf bourgignon. My goodness, everything was fabulous. I paired the dinner with a wine sampler, which happened to be perfect because I paired the red wine with the beef, white wine with the salmon, and rosé with the duck. To top it all off, the waitress was so incredibly pleasant! She had great recommendations and was very patient with our questions. When we asked for a bread basket, she said she was happy to bring us one, but she warned that it would make us full before the rest of the meal (which would come with lots of bread). I was so pleased that she cautioned us against the first basket of bread, because she was soooo right, we couldn't even finish all of our food even after skipping it. Love this place and I will be back!

Yelp
This food was spectacular! I felt like I got on a plane and flew to Paris. My husband and I got the 5 choice combo plate and everything was delicious. Our server Didier had wonderful wine parings for us as well. He was so attentive and easy going on a night that was probably hectic. Our total bill was around $100 and worth every penny. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
Wow! Great wine. I was really happy with the Anjou which was perfectly balanced between sweet and crisp, and the Boudreaux was very satisfying too. The food was nicely done and most of what we ordered was tapas size so perfect for snacking and having some variety. Out of everything we tried I'd recommend the meatballs or one of the sandwiches. The service was also very friendly. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Real wine bar in UWS Menu with organic wine , biodynamic wine Short food menu but amazing dish to pair with your wine. The chicken sandwich is awesome Chicken cassolette a big win Can t wait to go back The cherry on the cake is the service. They are all so great and you will feel like you are in a great bistro in Paris

Yelp
Our server at the bar in the 84th street location, Demetrius, was so helpful! He gave my friend (not a wine drinker) and I many tastes and was very knowledgeable and friendly. I have only been to the 84th street location, which a lot of neighborhood folks come to (a good place to meet new people?), though they do hold wine tastings in their TriBeCa location apparently. I can see it being a GREAT place to frequent if you are really interested in delving deeply into French wine.

Yelp
Wine bar hopping for tonight. This place had a really good wine flight deal. Wines were also top notch, IMO. However, my bf wasnt quite fond of the selections (wine importer). Atmosphere was nice and so was the crowd. We met some really cool folks here tonight. Overall, great place for whine and cheese
