16 Best Restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard | Eater Boston

"It’s worth a trip to the ATM to visit this cash-only ice cream shop in Edgartown. Order flavors like black sesame and Chilmark Coffee cold brew soft serve, or choose from homemade hard ice cream flavors like Southern peach, sea salt caramel truffle, and pistachio. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a classic chocolate or vanilla scoop, too. Be sure to order one of their homemade waffle cones." - Celina Colby

This was the only ice cream shop in Edgartown that we had yet to try so we decided it was finally time. The shop has never been very crowded when we walk by but on the evening of July 3rd (a Thursday), the spot was bopping. One of the main reasons for our visit was that this is one of the only places where you can get froyo in the area. We did not get ice cream so I can’t speak to that but the frozen yogurt was good. It wasn’t our favorite ice cream shop in the neighborhood and it was a little annoying that it’s cash only.

Google
the "cash only" bit felt like a gimmick to get tourists to pay an extra $3.75 "convenience fee" for the ATM in their lobby, given that they didn't mention it until your ice cream dish was already prepared and served up at the counter. Once you add the fee, it was the most expensive cup of mediocre sherbet I've ever had on an island.

I stopped by for ice cream twice last week with my husband and want to shout out the nice young lady who was working both evenings we visited! She was so friendly, welcoming, and helpful to us and our dog! The ice cream is good too (we tried the strawberry cheesecake, cookie dough, and other flavors), and the homemade waffle cones ($1.50 extra - a bargain for the quality) are the best ones we’ve ever eaten: they are buttery, decadent, and somehow don’t get soggy! In addition to hard ice cream, the shop also sells a variety of soft-serve ice cream flavors, a sugar-free hard ice cream flavor (coffee at the time we visited), some sorbet, and sodas. Overal, highly recommend! We will be back! Cash only and there is an ATM inside.

The ice cream was the best I have ever tried! Girls Anica, Anja and Marina were amazing.

Google
Favorite ice cream spot on the island. Some of your standard flavors with TONS of others to try out. For those vegan or diary intolerant, THEY GOT YOU! Great spot. Quick service. Just note - cash only, so make sure to bring that cashola.

Sorbet ice cream ( wildberry and lemonade) both are good , they accept cash only and there is ATM inside their store. They have a variety of flavors and you can taste if you want.

Yelp
My favorite ice cream shop on Martha's Vineyard! Cash only but they have an atm inside. They have the best soft serve ever. The black sesame is my favorite.

Yelp
The Scoop Shack who hand makes ice cream and is so close to the Edgartown ferry stop probably would've had my purchase but they were on holiday. So, I sought further around Edgartown and probably found something better for me! Hand made waffle cones here and I had black sesame soft serve, cotton candy, and no sugar coffee ice cream. Wow! I saw a bench near the building dedicated to a flavors man. Guessing he is related to the shop without any initial research. The female server told me normally they only give out two samples but she was nice enough to give me 4. So it was that much more important I buy more and tip. Cash only. Normally I'd feel a place in this area at these prices should be credit card, but everything else went so well that this was definitely a five star experience.

Yelp
We enjoyed this place. Got two scoops - black sesame soft serve and cookie dough (think they gave me cookie and creme instead but oh well) - in a cup plus cone for $10.50. Both were great though nothing to write home about. Heads up - they are cash only.

Yelp
Ice cream is good. But for $7 for a small scoop there are a lot of good ice cream options. The most off putting part of the place however is the service. There is no joy of ice cream here. The staff are bored and the first thing they announced was that you can only have one sample. Curious about 2 flavors? Tough. We did ask for a sample and if it was possible to put less ice cream on the tasting spoon I don't know how. I might (?) understand if the shop is crowded, but it was completely empty except for ourselves. The result is that we ordered only small scoop and the rest of us moved on. There are so many fun and innovative ice cream shops on the cape I would look elsewhere.

Yelp
Not sure why the bad reviews. It wasn't 5 star, but it wasn't terrible. With all the hype (and long lines) for Mad Martha's, we decided to to try Vineyard Scoops which had a decent crowd, good quality homemade ice cream, and reasonable servings. Everyone left happy, and they had tons of benches outside to enjoy your Vineyard Scoop.

Yelp
There is nothing special to describe this ice cream shop on a busy corner of town. Ice cream I had was okay at decent price. Not busy business for all day long, I guess. Not cozy ambience to stay inside to consume the cone.

Yelp
We went to a few ice cream places in Martha's Vineyard during my recent trip, and this was definitely my favorite. You walk in and it immediately smells like waffle cones. We were there on a Sunday evening, and there wasn't a line (although the whole area was relatively empty). They had so many fun flavors! It was really hard to decide on flavors. They even had fun soft serve flavors. I wish I could have tried some of them, but because of COVID, I couldn't. I ended up going with the honeycomb and churro, and WOW were they good. The waffle cone was one of the best waffle cones I've ever had. A little pricey but definitely worth it. There was a cute little park around the corner, where we ate our ice cream on a bench. I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in the Vineyard.

Yelp
This was the first ice cream place I happened upon when I was in Edgartown. I was intrigued by the flavors and decided to give it a try. Sadly no samples- due to COVID. I ordered a small, that was half honeycomb and half butter cake. The ice cream is "homemade" using hoof ice cream base, and their own mix-ins. The honeycomb was delicious, reminiscent of many honeycomb deserts I had in Australia. The butter cake was ok. The cake was multicolored and tasted like butter, but very dense. The ice cream was plain and overall the butter cake was disappointing. A large factor in my rating is the price. The small was $7! They also only accept cash. In the future, I'll try other places.

Kara K.

Yelp
Soft serve was delicious! The coffee flavor wasn't very sweet, but the chocolate vanilla twist was delicious.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Not the top ice cream spot in Edgar town but definitely debatable. Their top offering is choice freshly made waffle cones. Mmmm. Cash only. Daily updated menus of ice cream selection.
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
Good ice cream. Pecan is where it's at. Cash only tho! Overall would definitely recommend

Hope F.

Yelp
On the pricey side but that's to be expected on the vineyard. I highly recommend the black sesame soft serve. The cones are made in store and taste wonderful.

Yelp
When the line is mad crazy at Mad Martha's, with nary a peep chirping from Vineyard Scoops, one wonders, "Why?" The shop's dressed up in pearly white, with smiling scoopiers ready to dole out your dairy in cake, sugar or (with a surcharge) waffle cones, and the list of flavors is a sniff better than what you'd find in your grocer's freezer. My Banana Berry - a strawnana blend with a bing cherry bonus - balled up tight with a proper mini boulder giving me a truncated snowman of ice cream for $4. We're on a roll here! And my first bite? Chock full of ice. Dense, but not super-premium, and I kept hitting chunk after chunk of crystalline agua that says (a) it had melted and refrozen, or (b) it was churned too quickly, thus accumulating air and, subsequently, these little glacial annoyances. The flavor is fine, and the second scoop is only a buck more! (Do it; you've been good this week.) I'd suggest opting for a frappe to better mask the frigid grit.

Alex P.

Yelp
The soft serve ice cream is not great at all it definitely has that mix taste to it disappointing The hard ice cream was good I tried pistachio and strawberry both good although I preferred the strawberry

Yelp
Small neighborhood ice cream parlor with a few seats inside and a few outside. This is great for the enormous amount of foot traffic in Edgartown. Be ware. Cash only establishment. Expensive per all things on MV. Plenty of flavors to choose from and some non dairy options. And you can even get a taste if you're unsure of your selection. I chose chocolate. Simple. Can't go wrong with that. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
3.5 stars, ordered the black sesame and peaches and cream. Black sesame is an interesting flavor, tastes similar to peanut butter, but was a bit icy, was am unusual grey color, and was just 'average' in quality per my brother who ordered it. Peaches and cream was a bit too tangy but good.

Yelp
The ice cream is outstanding. Several great flavors plus dairy free and vegan options. We were referred here by three separate locals and they were not wrong. Experience the best. Grab your favorite flavor and enjoy the view from the nearby park bench. The perfect scoop of Americana.

Larry C.

Yelp
The best soft serve I have ever had, anywhere. Vanilla soft serve on a waffle cone, you will not be disappointed. When I'm in Martha's Vineyard, I go here almost every day for their vanilla soft serve. One of my favorite treats on the island.

Arielle B.

Yelp
The coffee soft-serve in a waffle cone is the best!! So flavorful. Warning: they only take cash.
google avatar

Trevin L.

Yelp
Ice cream and soft serve in variety of interesting flavors --like honey comb crunch and black sesame -- worth the *cash only* effort (ATM in store and others within a block)!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
It's hard to miss this ice cream shop because it's located smack dab in the middle of Main Street in Edgartown. It's OK ice cream. They say it's homemade and I don't doubt it, but it just didn't taste homemade. If the ice cream is indeed made on-site then they do a good job at hiding the ice cream making equipment, because I didn't see any equipment. For the price, I perhaps would have been better off grabbing a quart of Breyer's ice cream at the local supermarket.
google avatar

Jaimee A.

Yelp
We saw homemade Nutella ice cream and were sold. We should have read some of the reviews on Yelp and maybe we would have made a more informed decision. This wasn't the worst ice cream, but it wasn't the best. We had: S'mores - okay, the best of the bunch. Tasty of chocolate chips, kind of generic. Chocolate Chip - my 6 year old decided she had enough after a few bites - highly unusual. Strawberry - tasty The shop was very clean and the service was friendly.

Yelp
Finally found me some soft serve on the island :) For $4, I was able to get a generous sized regular cone. In addition to having the treasured soft serve ice cream, Vineyard Scoops has coffee, cappuccino, sorbet (yeay for lactose intolerant folks like me!), sherbet, frozen yogurt, sundaes, smoothies, candy necklaces, and rootbeer floats. To top it off, they make their own ice cream! Many tables are available, and Scoops' store is an incredibly large room. This place is cash only, and a great place to hang out when its rainy or too hot outside.
google avatar

Brittany M.

Yelp
Nothing much to say...ice cream is just ok for "homemade", no real Vineyard charm to the place, too pricey for what you get, sorbet tasted watery. Way too many other options on the Island to waste your time here.
google avatar

Catherine P.

Yelp
Ice cream was small portions for the price. We had a sundae and a milkshake which came to over $13. A little too much but I guess that's what is expected on the vineyard! The service was very friendly and the openness of the ice cream place is definitely a bonus for the summer months when the place gets packed. A big tip- they only accept cash! Luckily there is an ATM right next door and plenty along the Main Street in case you run into trouble!

Ben B.

Yelp
Totally solid ice cream. For some reason the Scoop Shack has higher reviews but we went there first and it is sub par. Head to this first!
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
There are so many ice cream places, this wouldn't be my first choice. We came here because my niece was insistent on going to the shop with the cows and they serve soft serve ice cream. 5 year olds 'nuff said. First off, a small was $5 and was the size of a normal kiddie size. For $5 you could go to other places and get a kiddie portion that is a size of a small. The amount you get for the price is a rip off. The ingredients seemed fresh. My sister in law raved about the vanilla. My father in law thought the snickers was good. Fresh nuts. The kids were delighted with their soft serve and sprinkles. What really upset me was the portion size for $5. $5 is pretty steep for ice cream by seems to be the standard for MV. The amount they give you for $5 compared to other places is ridiculously small.

Yelp
Convenient for people staying at Winnetu that need to catch the shuttle. Decent Ice Cream.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
This is where we go when the line at Mad Martha's is just too long to bear! They obviously do okay for themselves as they've been in the same spot for more than 2 decades, but in my humble opinion MM's is worth the wait! Scoops is cash only, but provide an ATM in store. They and serve up some unique flavors like S'mores and Coffee Oreo. My latest visit did not feature service with a smile, but I guess by mid August the summer staff is tired of scooping sweets for tourists and just wants to get to the beach themselves! Of the four ice-cream joints downtown this probably comes in second, but if you really want a taste of the vineyard head down to Water street between Main and Mayhew!

Yelp
Tasty ice cream but I noticed servers dishing up ice cream, handling money, and wiping down fixtures all while wearing the same set of vinyl gloves. I mentioned my concern before my server scooped mine and requested that she don new gloves, which she did. I was sad to notice that after serving me she (and others) continued the mixed unclean use of gloves. There are so many cool unique flavors in this store; I wish there were better food handling practices here.

Ari K.

Yelp
Ice cream is fine but I noticed that the ladies were handling ice cream with the same gloves they had used to touch money...utterly disgusting. This is not only gross but it is dangerous. It would be nice to see them do something about this considering I read a review that mentioned the same problem from TWELVE MONTHS ago and it's still happening today

Margaret M.

Yelp
We get ice cream here almost weekly. My son's Oreo didn't taste the same today and when I asked to change it the manager said no. We are a large family of 7. Never going back there again.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
The best ice cream I had on the island, and I certainly tried as much as I could. The "almond joy" was out of this world (and reminded me of a better, less messy version of the Coldstone German chocolate cake ice cream). Prices and selection were commensurate with competitors

Scott S.

Yelp
What a ripoff!!!. $8 for a cup of ice cream and not that good. The places by the waterfront are cheaper and their ice cream tastes a lot better.
google avatar

Allison D.

Yelp
Too expensive. $5.50 for a small ice cream. It wasn't even that good. Cash only. Wouldn't come again. Plenty of other ice cream shops to try.

Grace D.

Yelp
I don't think Scoops gets enough recognition since the hype surrounding Mad Martha's pushes it out of everyone's minds. No it's not cheap, but I'm beyond happy to pay a little more for better quality and a more reasonable serving--sometimes less really is more! The Almond Joy flavor was amazing and what I really loved was that it wasn't just chocolate ice cream with almond joys crumbled in it, it was the ice cream version of an almond joy! Creamy, delicious, and definitely superior to Mad Martha's.

Emma A.

Yelp
Very expensive for ice cream. The flavors are a bit plain but they taste delicious . The people that work there are very friendly and they seem to do a good job with replacing there gloves recently. Overall I recommend if you are hoping for the classics this is the place to go
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Decent ice cream, but I've definitely had better at other homemade ice cream shops... Nothing out of this world. Only like 10 flavors to choose from. Welcoming and friendly staff.

Anna R.

Yelp
Worst customer service ever! Inexperienced crew and management. Employees completely unhelpful and non accommodating to help my peanut allergic daughter have a cake cone. For a while Refused to let me read the ingredients on the cone box which was right next to the ice cream. Finally and with attitude, employee held up the box at arms length so I could try to see the ingredients but she refused to bring the box closer for viewing. When spoke to manager about my frustrating experience he was dismissive. Do not patron this place. There are other places with better ice cream and wonderful customer service.

Alex B.

Yelp
Nice ice cream and very friendly, cheerful young people serving me. Was pleasantly surprised and a certainly didn't have the same experience as the other reviewers.

Brad B.

Yelp
Uh nope, not again! $4 for a single scoop served from a melon scoop. The guy spent quite a long time making sure you didn't get more than a perfectly round sized scoop of below average ice cream. I have no problem paying up, but give your customers a decent portion. Mad Martha's down the street is a much better value and product.
