"Serving contemporary rolls and sashimi in swanky surroundings since 2000, M Street’s swanky pan-Asian restaurant in the Gulch is many locals’ go-to sushi spot. In addition to bao, robatayaki, and other hot dishes, you’ll find a wide menu of nigirizushi (composed sushi), sashimi, and sushi rolls with plenty of options, but you can also trust the chef with the omakase tasting (dine-in only). Don’t miss the extensive list of sake, Japanese whiskeys, and cocktails with on-theme flavors like wasabi and lychee." - Jackie Gutierrez-Jones, Delia Jo Ramsey, Eater Staff

My wife and I we were really looking forward to a great date night. We tried 3 sushi rolls and they were very average. There was little complexity or depth to the rolls. There wasn’t much flavor or uniqueness to the rolls. Nothing was horrible but none of it stood out as great sushi. If you’re going to spend top dollar on sushi I wouldn’t recommend this place. Our server was okay and the atmosphere is upscale but ultimately left wishing the sushi was better. The one bright side was the cauliflower appetizer dish.

On walking up to Virago it felt similar to some of the restaurants tucked away in Tokyo. The ambiance of the restaurant was very comfortable. Our server, Ernesto, took very good care of us. He explained the menu very thoroughly. He provided some good recommendations and made sure were very well taken care of throughout our entire meal. Since we were celebrating our 12th anniversary, we ordered a lot to be able to sample a lot of different options. We could have very easily spent half as much and still been just as satisfied with our meal. I would definitely highly recommend this place, especially for those who love seafood and sushi. For those who don't like seafood like me, there are enough offerings to still satisfy other tastes. If I had any critique, it would be that when we made a reservation they asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. We mentioned that it was our anniversary. While we were not expecting anything because of that, their was nothing done from the restaurant, so it was pointless that they even asked us that. Again, we weren't expecting anything specifically, and we were very pleased with our entire experience overall, and would very much recommend this place to anyone else. They do offer complimentary valet parking right across the street which is nice. It made it easy to just pull up enjoy our dinner and leave without any issues. No worries about finding parking spots.

Google
Virago you are 5+ star worthy. The atmosphere and ambiance were great. The volume was perfect. The seating was comfortable. Small things you forget about but when they're right you notice. We spent about 3 hours for my birthday and never once felt rushed or pressured. The service was 5 star. The small plates were the best I've found in Nashville. We shared tuna tartar, bao Buns and yellowtail. They all melt in your mouth, great flavor and no "fishy" after taste. They must fly this food in the day of. You can't go wrong with any of their rolls either. We had cold sake and of course dessert. The pace was perfect. Our cups were always full. I will be visiting again shortly.

Google
Very busy night when we went, celebrated a birthday! We ordered a lot of food. Unfortunately it seemed like it took awhile to get anything, then nothing was coursed out for us and just kept coming to the table dish on top of each other even if we weren’t done eatting what we had, and didn’t have room for it yet, but Sushi quality was good, pork belly was flavorful! Fried rice was just okay. Fun cooking the wagyu on the hot stone. Great atmosphere, and waitress was very nice! Thanks for the birthday dessert!

Google
Andrew made such excellent recommendations, we had a great time and delicious sushi. The salmon buttery nigiri was out of this world. I highly recommend this restaurant and ask for Andrew, he is so attentive

Google
We got the Rock Shrimp, Crunchy Truffle, Wagyu Fried Rice and Mochi. The Rock Shrimp was my favorite, it was very refreshing. The Crunchy Truffle was a great portion size and tasted alright. The Mochi Ice cream from here was mid, I wouldn’t recommend — but I would 100% come back again soon!

Google
The food was amazing. The company was great. The server did a great job. The atmosphere is beautiful and chic. Everything tasted so good. We'll definitely be back.

Google
Virago is a fine dining Japanese restaurant, with lots of options to choose from! Please note, entry is confusing, as you walk between two different restaurants to go down a dark hall & find a solid wood back door. The reservation service was very strict on the cancellation policy, and we found this strange because the restaurant wasn’t very busy. We were disappointed to find out 2/3 apps we wanted were “out of stock.” We all loved the lychee martini & tropical guava sangria. The sushi selection & apps were very good. I enjoyed the wagyu fried rice. It was good, but in all honesty the wagyu was overcooked. Our server Maddie was very nice, but not super attentive. At one point I wanted a fork and by time she came back to the table, we had finished the rice. All in all, the food and drinks were good. They definitely could make some improvements here and there to receive a higher rating.

Jahannah M.

Yelp
one of the best dining experiences I've ever had! The best sushi in Nashville hands down! The ambiance, service, and drinks were just 15/10!

Megan Y.

Yelp
We went to Virago for their half-price sushi Monday where they have a good number of appetizers and rolls that are at half price and two for one deal for drinks. The way to get to the restaurant was kind of dark. There's an upscale and fancy vibe. They were very busy, so thankfully we made a reservation. We were seated right away. The server was friendly and made sure we always had water. The server apologized ahead of time that the food would take awhile like 45 min. We ended up getting our food within 30 min. The rolls were delicious. I wouldn't say it blew my mind (I'm spoiled by super great sushi in Houston), but definitely better than any other sushi I've had in Nashville. The drinks were also good. I thought they could improve the A5 wagyu nigiri though. This item isn't on the half price menu but I'm a sucker for wagyu. The meat is just as tender and flavorful as usual, but it was served cold which makes it taste too fatty. It was sad that such a premium piece of meat was ruined a bit by having hardened fat which distracted me from enjoying it. Overall, Virago is worth checking out on Mondays for sure. Their regular pricing is a bit pricey for what you get for me. I would like to go back and try their hot plate Wagyu. Expect it'll taste better served hot.

Ruchi A.

Yelp
Overall the service was amazing! I also got one of the zero proof drinks and it was fabulous. I loved the atmosphere but I wasn't blown away by the sushi. We did the tasting menu and it was a good amount of food for 2 people. However the rolls were okay. Out of the four rolls we tried we only loved the truffle one mostly due to the sauce. The majority of the other rolls were cut really big so it was very hard to collect all of the toppings and eat it. I had to break it up into bites which was sad. It was a really good portion of food but I just wish there were almost fewer rolls done better. It is a great vibe!

Jessica S.

Yelp
5/5 for ambience and the vibe. Very classy + sexy. Came here for a bachelorette party group and booked this place for a group dinner. The service was slow but we didn't mind because we were having fun talking. The Wagyu fried rice was delicious. One my favorites. The miso soup was also amazing. Not too salty. The sushi could have been better. The rice wasn't as soft as I thought. I was disappointed. Although the variety of rolls were plentiful. The pork belly was not good at all. The Bao buns was not soft and pillowly. It was the worst dish. Pork Tasted artificial. Wouldn't recommend. Overall, for the price we paid, we could've gone somewhere else for better food but I think the ambience of the restaurant was exactly what we wanted.

Shannon S.

Yelp
This place has a cool vibe as you enter and the interior has an interesting design aesthetic. My one big complaint is that it is very dark inside to the point it is hard to really see your food as you eat. They also had a posted dress code they didn't enforce. My food was overall good but not great as it was a bit on the bland side to my taste. Overall it is a nice space and seems like it would be a good date night spot.

Amani A.

Yelp
The inviting atmosphere was what drew me in; it's a pleasant place for drinks and appetizers. Our server was incredibly attentive and warm, and she provided valuable assistance regarding allergens while making necessary accommodations. Although the food was enjoyable, it wasn't particularly noteworthy.

Julianne C.

Yelp
I ordered the triple citrus salmon and the bomb sushi. Both are very delicious. I ordered via DoorDash and the food was on time. The bomb sushi is very very good, I can see why it is listed as popular on DoorDash. I also ordered a miso soup, which is warm and tasty.

Jasmine A.

Yelp
I went with my family to celebrate my birthday back in August and I'm still raving about it! We had several types of sushi, which we loved, but everyone at the table were savoring the bao buns. We had them all. The Korean pork belly ones were me and my grandson's favorite. The service was impeccable and the restaurant itself is gorgeous! The drinks were delicious and perfectly blended with the right amount of alcohol. I look forward to returning and being able to sit at the bar area--some of the fancy plush chairs are plus size friendly!!

Samantha W.

Yelp
Food is AMAZING and ambiance is so moody, perfect for date night! Kayla behind the bar will take care of you!

Kendall C.

Yelp
I eat here almost every time I'm in town. They have the best sushi! Every server I've had has been amazing. I highly recommend Virago. I've never had a bad visit, the food is always exceptional!

Epiphany W.

Yelp
The food and service was amazing as usual. This time a I ordered the crispy brussles, crab tacos, and Godzilla roll.

Otheller T.

Yelp
Amazing ambiance and great food. We walked in with no reservations. Lots of people waiting and hostess said to sit at the bar would be a 45 min wait. We were fine with that. We ordered drinks while we waited. All were delicious. And wait wound up being 15-20 minutes. The seats at the bar were so comfortable. The pork belly and the spicy tuna roll were awesome. My wife and I cleaned the plates. The bartender was nice and attentive. We just sat there and vibed out. Loving everything. My wife is already talking about how she can't wait to go back. lol.

Rebecca E.

Yelp
Place is a vibe. Sushi was average but the wait it took between ordering and receiving the food was way too long. Would be worth it for a half off Monday situation, but not at the regular price point we had.

Michael L.

Yelp
Beware! Don't trust the rating! What an incredible disappointment. First off, no table ready despite reservation so sat at the bar. Sushi arrived warm and tasteless. Probably the worst sushi I've ever had. I was shocked especially after all the positive reviews. I complained to manager and he gave me his card offering to comp me for next time but honestly too scarred to go back even for free. Sad how terrible the sushi is! This restaurant is all style with no substance!

Sarah B.

Yelp
We had Ashely as our server. Very knowledgeable and professional. The dining area is beautiful. It felt hidden and intimate. The food came out quickly and tasted incredible!

Beth F.

Yelp
We arrived during a downpour. It was very close to find parking -there is a lot half a tiny block up the hill. They moved our seating, so I didn't have to walk down steps -I use a walker. We ended up sitting on low couches around bar tables, in what I can only describe as hidden grotto, but not really a grotto either. Anywho, my daughter and I enjoyed the required photo session that one nowdays must have. I will say that the place is very photogenic and well lit for pictures. Even better was the food. We each had the lychee saketini to start, then we shared an order of spicy tuna/crispy rice, a crunchy truffle roll, and wagyu fried rice. We decided to get a second truffle roll because it was so delicious. But Jumping Jehosephat! That Wagyu Fried rice was such wonderful rice. The vegetables are larger than i typically think of veggies in fried rice, the sauce was soy based with something sweet in it. The beef came in both ground and diced versions. I wanted to order some to go. Alas I did not. After tip, it came to around $160 for two people. I did not feel like I was ripped off, but still l, not a cheap meal. It was all incredibly fresh tasting. I will go back.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
This is an incredibly classy, sexy and swanky feeling restaurant! The food was phenomenal. We made a reservation for a Friday night and I think that's a must. Service was great, all of the food was incredibly fresh and delicious. They also have a huge sushi menu, definitely a must visit. Higher price points but the food is truly quality and you're paying for the experience. Highly recommend!

Nikki N.

Yelp
We came here for my daughter's birthday! Our server was amazingly sweet! Always made sure our water was filled! The sushi rolls were to die for! And we recommend if you haven't tried the V2 edamame you have to!!!

Brittan G.

Yelp
I always have a phenomenal time when I come here! The waitstaff are always attentive and courteous as well. I love going for maki sake Monday and the prices are extremely reasonable!

David D.

Yelp
Glad we came on a Monday for 1/2 price specials. We got exactly what we paid for. Barely warm miso soup and room temp sushi. Not bad and not great. Atmosphere and service are awesome.

Hannah E.

Yelp
I wish I could say this place was as good as all the other reviews, but I just don't get it... The first time we went we ordered half the menu and nothing had any flavor! It was so weird, I thought maybe it was me, so I decided not to review until I came back a second time... but unfortunately, I had the same experience with even worse service. Such a bummer because so many people rant and rave about this place, but I will say the ambience is super cool and I love the vibe! I just couldn't get there with the food or the service. Not to say that I won't ever go back but there are so many other places in the city that are good without the price tag. :/

Wesleigh W.

Yelp
Our server, David, was amazing. Very knowledgeable about the menu, made excellent recommendations, and educated us on the different types of sake. We were visiting from out of town, so he also gave us some suggestions for other places to visit. Overall, the food, atmosphere, and service were all incredible, and I would highly recommend Virago to anyone looking for an upscale sushi restaurant with great vibes.

caroline a.

Yelp
Ernesto was the best and assisted us so well! This was our first time here and we will definitely be coming back. We got the spritz before spring, Geisha's Dance, and Wasabi martini. They were good but the wasabi was definitely one to try if you like spice. Our rolls were SO good! Notable rolls were the oishii and the bomb. We cannot wait to come back!

Hannah K.

Yelp
What a great sushi spot in Nashville! Food was top tier, atmosphere was intimate, and service was great. Honestly, the best coconut rice I could ever dream of.

Virginia L.

Yelp
Every visit to has been nothing short of fantastic. The atmosphere consistently exudes class and acceptance, the cuisine is consistently delightful and made with fresh ingredients, and the service is consistently impeccable. Our recent experience on Maki Monday was exemplary. From the assortment of whiskey, martinis, sake, to the rolls and edamame, everything was flawlessly executed. Our waiter, Andrew, deserves special mention for his outstanding service. He struck the perfect balance of making us feel welcome without rushing us, and his attentiveness was just right, never intrusive. Highly recommended! Must Try Rolls: - Ecuador (really good if you like burst of different flavors) - New Moon (nice and fresh) - Crunchy California (a basic California with a hint of sweetness)

Jess N.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite sushi spot. I have been twice now and plan to come every time I am in Nashville. I have yet to have a bad bite. It is a cool speakeasy vibe with the most delicious wasabi martini. I dream about this drink! The service has been amazing and attentive every time. I cannot say enough good things about this place.

Molly D.

Yelp
We went for the maki-sake Monday deal and it was great! Every sushi roll was fresh and delightful, not a lot of rice used as a filler, even though it was a deal night. Tried the yuzu sour and the wasabi martini - inventive drinks and would do again! The server was very kind and knowledgeable - but you could sense that Mondays are tough for them with how busy they are and understaffed. Perfect for your Instagram photo shoot or a nice date night!

Parker S.

Yelp
Made a reservation for our anniversary at Virago for Maki Saki Monday (half price sushi) and it was fantastic. It's a bit hidden and the door is sort of a speak-easy vibe which is cool. The service was good but we couldn't hear a word our server was saying (a combination of him speaking really softly and it being pretty loud) but he filled our waters and made sure we weren't left out to dry. The food, we got 4 sushi rolls and overall were left impressed. - Truffle Futomaki This roll was ridiculously good and was full of so many flavors that it felt like an experience. In my top 3 rolls I've ever had. - Dragon Fire Very good and overall had a more subtle taste than the truffle roll and even though it included cream cheese it did not overpower the rest of the roll thankfully - Dynamite A good spicy tuna roll and thats about it. Nothing special, but not a bad roll by any means Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Virago and will probably come again on Monday for the half price sushi!

Tim F.

Yelp
Finally got around to trying virago and was not disappointed. Food was fresh and creative, and service was great. Definitely now a favorite spot.

Kristin P.

Yelp
Entering in the place felt like a fancy speakeasy with the quiet but sophisticated atmosphere. The food was an absolute dream. I loved their use of actual fresh wasabi in the Panda roll. Additionally, Jake our server, was spot on with every recommendation. Loved this spot.

Drew S.

Yelp
This place got 5 big booms from Joyce Kelly so you know it must be good. The food, service, and ambience especially really jazzed it up for her. Thank you so much for this.!

Graham H.

Yelp
The food was the best sushi I've had in Nashville. Our server was the best at explaining the whole menu and giving us great recommendations. The ambiance was a vibe. I'd maybe have a different music selection from just American pop music.

Lisa M.

Yelp
The total experience of dining at Virago was wonderful. The food was delicious. I had the Tanto roll and it was not only beautifully presented, it was delicious! My husband had the Wagyu steak cooked on a rock. He loved that experience and said it was amazing . I highly recommend!

Alexia G.

Yelp
The sushi here is the best I've had since moving to Tennessee. It was so fresh and no fish smell. Our waitress was super friendly and helped us with suggestions for drinks. There is a dress code and even though we were dressed casually in jeans, I felt like we were under dressed. But dinner here was spontaneous and we didn't know there was a dress code. We will be more prepared when we return, because we definitely will be returning.

Ellie G.

Yelp
Went for Monday 2 for 1 drinks and half off sushi. Great ambiance and fun with a group. Do not know if I would go if not for happy hour.

Kaela M.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Very chill ambiance with beautiful decor. We were the only ones in there pretty much.

Michael O.

Yelp
Definitely go here. We live in the neighborhood and go here all the time. Food is great as are the drinks (the Stone Steak and Rock-shrimp are favorites). The bar and the booths are both great seats. Special shout out last night for Matthew, one of the mangers and our server Ashleigh. They made it really funny and great. We'll be back in a week.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Yum! We came here after a show at the Rhyman. It was exactly what we wanted! We ordered the Godzilla and the Bomb. Both were amazing. I like the Bomb a little more. We ordered the Samurai Bacon for an appetizer and I didn't love it but my boyfriend did. The atmosphere of this place was the best. It kind of felt like a fun place from Star Wars. We sat at the bar and they had cool swivel chairs that were super comfy and they had a few other cool sitting areas. It was a fun place to hang after a show on a Sunday night!

Kylie M.

Yelp
All I can say is... WOW! The waiter we had was just phenomenal (I wish I remembered his name). He answered all the questions we had and was very attentive to us. The sushi I had was the best sushi I think I have ever had. The best sushi of the 2 I had was the crunchy truffle! It was so smooth and creamy. I loved the vibe and the up scaled vibe of this place too! I can't wait to come back someday

Jasma R.

Yelp
One of my favorites in Nashville so far. Perfect date night, it feels very upscale but with budget friendly prices. My date loved his sushi. I did wish they had more options w out cream cheese and avocado but you can customize any of them however you like. The service was amazing and I will definitely be back

Melissa B.

Yelp
Pros: - Beautiful venue - Great music (70s to 2000s) - Great service - Great place to get drinks We tried different dishes. It was disappointing, especially because of the high price of dishes. - I wasn't expecting the freshest seafood in Nashville, but the dishes that included shrimp were too flimsy. - As someone who comes from a culture that eats avocado, the maki dish that includes it was just starting to rot because it was mushy and there were black spots. - Maki dishes were rolled loosely and had too much sauce (the sauce was good) so they were soggy & messy. They're supposed to be tight and would have light sauce (sometimes extra on the side), if not no sauce. Then you can taste the different ingredients of the dish. - Rock shrimp app also had too much sauce so the breading was soggy. This is not authentic Japanese, but even fusion restaurants get it right and the seafood is at least somewhat fresh. It's as though there's little faith in the food so there's dependence on sauce for the lack of freshness, flavor and technique. Nevertheless, great ambience and place to get drinks.

Howard S.

Yelp
My family and I had a great experience at Virago. At first I was off-put by the menu prices, buy once the food started coming, that concern was dispelled. Our server was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The only negative of the evening was the slow arrival of our drinks and a bit of a slow pace in food arrival. The edamame in a special sauce was the best any of the four of us had ever had. The rock shrimp appetizer and fried chicken bao were excellent. I order chirashi bowls at many restaurants, and the one I had was the best and most beautifully present I have had in a long time. The also offered a soy flight of three specialty soy sauces which were good and interesting. With drinks and dessert for four adults and a child, the bill was over $500.00 and we didn't mind.

Wisti Q.

Yelp
First off... sushi in Nashville? Yes! Our experience was fantastic from the moment we saw the front door until we left. The food, setting and service were all amazing!

Grace K.

Yelp
MAJOR SUSHI SLAY! Best sushi in Nashville. Loved all their rolls so much. Ambiance and vibes were immaculate. Would absolutely dine here again.

austin w.

Yelp
** WILL*** the 'fabulous' guy. absolutely stud waiter. I'll be back because of that service. ambiance is best in nashville

Musie Y.

Yelp
Fresh and full of flavor sushi rolls. I highly recommend going with a group and getting a couple rolls to share so you can try everything rather than sticking to one or two rolls. Great ambience, I think there is a semi dress code for the place. Truffle Futomaki: Out of all the roles, this was hands down the best roll here. The albacore and the shrimp together went well and with the yuzu truffle on top, it was perfection. Oishi: This was my second favorite roll because the garlic soy sauce sealed the deal. I love that it had eel, shrimp, and ahi tuna - packed with flavors. Crunch California: Originally I thought this would be a basic role, but it was far from that. It's a California roll with tempura, cucumber, and honey fire as the sauce. The honey really added to the flavor of the roll and I was surprised. Ecuador: I love hamachi and this roll has hamachi, tuna, avocado, cilantro, cucumber, tempura, and on the side they add sriracha and wasabi mayo and it adds to the flavor of the roll. Double Tekka Crunch: Yummy roll with eel and spicy tuna, very fresh. For drinks, the Tokyo Sangria is juice!! It was fruity, delicious, and I recommend it.

Gabrielle F.

Yelp
We went here for our wedding anniversary and it was a good experience. We ended up getting the 30pc sushi platter. So much food but also a lot of options to choose from.

Renee H.

Yelp
Always delicious food. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Always Great service too. Love Maki Saki Mondays!

Karen M.

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing. They accommodated my gluten allergy with ease and would go back again!
