4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: June 6 | Eater LA

"An unassuming, easygoing breakfast and brunch spot in Virgil Village that serves generous portions of classics like French toast, pancakes, and eggs alongside Mexican-leaning dishes such as huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, and breakfast burritos. The interior is no-frills but service is warm and speedy, with fresh-pressed juices and smoothies (including a green juice and a peanut butter–banana option). During the day it expands into lunch territory with items like a tlayuda, a mushroom burger, and fajitas, making it a relaxed alternative to busier neighborhood breakfast destinations." - Eater Staff

Food is good for the price and there are generous portions. Plating is gorgeous as well. Nice, affordable, fresh smoothies and pastries are great. Outside seating and the cutest tiramisu latte.

Came to Cali for a visit and made a quick stop here due to the reviews and I’m extremely glad I did. I ordered the Chicken Pesto Sandwich and an Iced Caramel Macchiato. Prices are excellent for the quality of food and service. Give them a try!

This is my go to spot for breakfast or brunch. Highly recommend this place to anyone who comes to town. The food is delicious - seriously mouthwatering good - and very decently priced. The atmosphere is very basic but we love it. No frills, just really good food and fresh juices. Indoor and outdoor seating, its small so probably not great for a big group but we've always been able to find seating for 2-4 people. Always recommend the steak and eggs and breakfast burritos. Seriously so good.

Cute, little cafe on Virgil Ave. The customer service is super friendly, attentive, and kind. The cafe has a variety of smoothie, juices, and coffee selection with fair pricing, but the quality of their beverages is delightful and full of flavor. Food prices is affordable, and the amount of they serve you is a good portion where you’ll be over satisfied. They take their time creating your food, and often time you’ll see the cooks peeping their heads out the kitchen to observe the room and people eating their delicious meals. Overall, this cafe will attend your needs and fill your belly’s! I recommend. Come on by and give it a try!

I can appreciate that Billy Eilish didn’t take my order at the cash register and that Chappell Roan didn’t serve me my food, especially on Virgil. Instead it was a young Latina high school girl struggling not to spill my 16 oz latte too much. The cup is big and heavy so it would be a struggle for most. This place is down to earth. It’s real. For $16 you get a 16 oz latte and chorizo con huevos. Maybe two eggs. Not sure. I ordered chorizo con huevos because I don’t do breakfast burritos. I’m from West Mexico. Michoacán to be exact. They were nice enough to make my chorizo con huevos even though I don’t think it’s on the menu. On my fancy rectangular plate they put a tree orchid and it made me feel a little better. The end of year holidays are the worst time of year for me. I’m not sure if the girl at the register noticed I was muted by life or not and told the kitchen but in any case I appreciated the flower. It was brighter than my thoughts today. Of course they probably place them on all plates but today I think I’ll pretend someone notices me and even cares. This little cafe is simple. They make juices and smoothies too. The blender/ juicer is on constantly and it can be so ASMR. I guess. To be honest I quite enjoyed hearing people speaking Spanish behind me. I was born in Los Angeles but nevertheless I’ve always felt so out of place. Not because of all the local blue haired people, or the entitled transplants or the hard working immigrants. More like the fact that California is its own thing in this country. Still, our particular voice has little impact and here we are trapped in our own backyard with little appreciation from the rest of the country for the fact we provide for the rest of the country. I don’t like the music here. Only defect. Meter parking outside.

Virgil Cafe is a modest corner breakfast cafe that offers traditional Mexican cuisine with bold flavors as well American cuisine delights with comforting classics such as burgers, fries and crispy sweet waffles. They are located on Virgil and Melrose ave in Virgil Village in East Hollywood. Its interior and exterior layout design was plain but the culmination of this review doesn’t end here. They offer salubrious food and fresh juices on their menu. We came here as first time customers. We perused their menu; I decided to have a Veggie Omelet and a Cubano espresso. I liked their food because it was fresh and warm which is a perfect match for my espresso drink. Staff were affable, warm and professional. Service was on point. Atmosphere was quite relaxing. Prices were fair. Free rear parking lot and street public parking are available. Collectively, this is a great breakfast cafe spot in this hipster neighborhood. Overall, I enjoyed their food and coffee as well as their service. I will definitely try their juices.

Google
It’s pricey BUT the quality and portion is so worth it. The food is amazing so you do get what you pay for. Love that I can walk to a delicious spot for breakfast and lunch (and an early dinner since they close at 7pm).

Google
Breakfast burrito and the pink smoothie is delicious! I will give it another chance. Food was bland for the most part. Got the huevos rancheros and a side of French toast. 2nd visit Ordered the chiliquiles burrito. Delicious. Had chicken and beef. It was so good I had to put it down to take a breather. Sipping on a hot Chai under the AC. Cashier and Barista friendly like always. Thank you.

Yelp
My boyfriend actually chose this spot and I didn't look at pictures or reviews until we arrived. Based on the pictures I thought it was basic American breakfast that I didn't care to spend money on. I was happily proven wrong. We both ordered the red chilaquiles and they were actually spicy and packed with flavor. The environment was welcoming and felt homey. We also had their Aqua Fresca which tastes natural without a bunch of added sweetener and they come with free refills! After my boyfriend watched one of the waiters make a smoothie for like 2 minutes she actually came to offer us a free sample. It was the Virgil classic and was amazing. Although I'd love to gate keep this place because it's hard to find a genuinely good and decently priced breakfast spot in LA; this place deserves more love and attention. I can't wait to bring more friends and family here for future breakfast and dig into their coffee menu!

Yelp
Everyone there is kind and helpful, the food is always great and it feels like a well rounded community spot.

Yelp
Location is at the North end of LA there is a small parking lot and parking stalls out front. Depending on the time and day the parking can be a little challenging. I was heading to a morning doctors appoint and coming in hot, coming from Riverside and wanted a breakfast burrito so as always, I went to Yelp for help! Virgil Café came up for my best breakfast burrito in town! I was able to go online ordering a Famous Breakfast Burrito to go which was very easy to order. It came with eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, salsa and cheese. When I arrived at the restaurant there was parking right in front and I walked up to this storefront business and was warmly greeted and said I was here for a to go order in which I discovered my order was all ready and hot. I saw a few inside seating tables and the ambiance was casual and clean. This burrito lived up to its name the "best"! It was big stuffed full and perfectly balanced between the meat, potatoes and eggs. Some places try to overload the potatoes to cut cost but not here. I highly recommend Virgil Café for your next breakfast burrito, if you want the best and famous! I will be back in LA for a couple of more doctor visits and will definitely pick up a Famous Breakfast Burrito again.

Yelp
This is my second time coming here. I really like their breakfast burritos. I got the red chilaquiles burrito. Not to spicy, but still vsey delicious and big. My friend got the french toast combo, she enjoyed her french toast and everything that came with it. My one complaint is that you have to pay to add meat to the chilaquiles burrito so i might not get that one as often, when i come back even though it was really good! The people working here are nice and welcoming. It wasn't to busy, which was nice cause they answered all our questions and didn't have to feel rushed. There is street parking in front and theres a little parking lot next to the building. They do have a couple of small table you can sit at outside, but it is kind of a busy street so we sat inside. It is a somewhat small space, but plenty of tables. The space isnt really decorated much so not really a place you would go for aesthetic. You are definitely coming for the food as it should be. I can see this place getting way more popular and eventually needing to expand or find a bigger location once it does. Definitely thinking we have found our after work breakfast spot.

Yelp
Not sure where to start. Food, service, fresh juices, or the parking lot!? Everything was amazing I got the pancake combo and matcha latte 10/10 And it isn't crowded. I think I'll keep this little gem to myself

Yelp
The food here was wonderful! The service also great, the server was very friendly. I appreciated it extra because I was (sob) not with my sibling. The ambiance also very clean and nice. I'm not sure if they had a bathroom but if they did I couldn't find it and was too cowardly to ask as I was all on my lonesome. Alas alas. I walked here from an LACC parking lot so I'm not sure about the parking here.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast burrito. Make sure you are hungry !!!! You can totally share that burrito.

Yelp
A brilliant NY philosopher once said "Life is not about finding yourself but finding a good food and coffee." - Carl N. :D Virgil Cafe is a modest corner breakfast cafe that offers traditional Mexican cuisine with bold flavors as well American cuisine delights with comforting classics such as burgers, fries and crispy sweet waffles. Yelp
Almost" perfect. Had a chicken pesto sandwich that had great flavor, balance ingredients, and nice soft foccacia bread. The salad also had a nice balance of ingredients. Why not five stars? Could have been just a tad more pesto sauce, and the chicken (although tasty) was a little skimpy on portion size. Otherwise, a nice lunch experience.

Yelp
If you're ever going to sqirl and don't want to wait in the long line go across the street and get yourself an even better (and even a bit cheaper) breakfast at Virgil cafe. It's super lowkey (for now) but everything I've had it spot on and much more elevated than you would anticipate from this little cafe. The breakfast burrito has your standard ingredients but it's done absolutely right. I love the whole potatoes inside. Also, the chilaquiles with steak... holy s*** Last but not least I'm also into their espresso brown sugar latte. They also have a bunch of fresh made juices and smoothies that I've yet to try but they're on my list! Great new addition to the area.

Yelp
Wow, what a not-so-hidden gem! I've lived in the neighborhood for several years now and somehow never noticed this place. Judging by how few reviews there are here so far, I'm guessing it may be new, but I can't remember what this location was before. At any rate, picked up their famous breakfast burrito and a cold brew with sweet cream cheese cold foam. Glad they have a small parking lot. The server who gave us our order greeted us with a warm smile and was very diligent, professional, and friendly, asking us if we needed hot sauce, utensils, ketchup, or mayonnaise. Once we got home and tasted the food, we continued to be blown away. The burrito was scrumptious--clearly made with a lot of intention and love with fresh ingredients. The sweet cream cheese cold foam was amazing (tasted delicious, although admittedly did not taste like the most health-conscious thing to consume!). My partner got the chicken and apple breakfast burrito and a matcha latte with cold foam sprinkled with Biscoff bits. The Biscoff latte looked and tasted great and was super interesting. All in all, plan to come back here a lot to try more of their menu. Highly recommend giving it a shot!

Yelp
Perfect mom and pop spot for a traditional breakfast. Food was amazing. Service was outstanding. Good atmosphere to start the morning routine! This is a sleeper!

Yelp
Yummy. Sparkly clean. Local. Always nice. Also...they have fresh juice at probably the best prices in LA
google avatar

Maanasa S.

Yelp
I almost never write reviews because I am not that active on Yelp, but I honestly have never been so fully satisfied on my first try as I have with this place. So, I felt the need to share. The berry smoothie is excellent (I added greek yogurt) and it was the best smoothie I've ever had in LA (not even exaggerating). I got the chilaquiles burrito as well and every bite has been perfection! I can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
Yum! Excellent service and food. I've eaten there 3 times now and the food has been delicious. I love supporting local people and it's great that this family has been able to open up. Ok, I had the huevos rancheros, a burrito and the asada plate. Oh, yes...I also took a juice home with me, carrot, orange and beets. Added bonus, they have parking!!

Yelp
So far i have had the breakfast burritos , and so far they have been amazing. I also was recommended one of their biscotti coffees it was really good. The spot use to be the wah's golden hen a Chinese restaurant that was in the neighborhood for years, man i miss that spot and the lady as well. The young lady at this new establishment is always very welcoming and has great suggestions. I suggest the famous breaks fast burrito with green sauce. Enough to share, unless you have a big appetite. The ingredients are solid and the burrito is not all oily so will not make you feel bloated. Cheers hope to hear any suggestion on here for other plates. I will be trying the french toast soon.

Ahhyun K.

Yelp
Coffee tastes awful and service quite slow and food is ok but it's nice that there's a parking lot
google avatar

Brianna C.

Yelp
So yummy. They did not take long at all to have the order ready! I thoroughly enjoyed my burrito

Dylan S.

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim and so glad I did! The food was delicious -- super fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. I was honestly surprised by how reasonable the prices were, especially considering the quality. The whole place has a really good vibe too -- cozy, welcoming, and just the right level of busy. Definitely one of those spots you want to come back to. Highly recommend!

Joshua C.

Yelp
Check out Virgil cafe where you can enjoy some great breakfast and lunch and have a good time. Shout out to Marco

Sofia U.

Yelp
Y'all I was sleeping on this place and never again. Their Fruity Berry French Toast is divine!!! They were very understanding when I wanted to change my order, I mistakenly got the regular french toast, and they were very accommodating! The food was amazing! Will go again
google avatar

Summer L.

Yelp
I was hungry, the food was good, service amazing - first time in this area and I just happened to walk into this cafe.

Anna B.

Yelp
Food is always outstanding! Affordable, great breakfast. Lovely employees. A perfect place in my opinion, happy they joined the neighborhood

Sister N.

Yelp
Loved it here! Sept 2024: Great prices, amazing choices for selection, cozy vibes, bomb portions, easy parking, and sweet customer service!! Solid meal for sure. I would go again and take others if I were in the area. Only suggestion I would make is to add some seasoning to the plates, but tbh that's something that can be easily made up for as they stay in business. Also got a blueberry matcha, I think if it was sweetened it would be better! But not bad, I also did get oat milk so that could be a factor of not as sweet.

Yelp
Quality food with really cute presentation. Staff is super friendly and the drink options are also delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
You absolutely have to visit Virgil Cafe. Incredible food, beautiful atmosphere, excellent service and the friendliest staff. The food exceeded my expectations. First time here and planning to go back any time soon with the family!
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
Wow this place is amazing fresh fruit smoothies and the food is amazing so fresh, totally worth a drop in- the staff is fast and sweet plus you get the opportunity to support a charming local business!

Lily T.

Yelp
I live across the street from this place and i'm happy i decided to pop in while on my walk around the neighborhood. I got the famous breakfast burrito, and it was great! Everything tasted so fresh, their smoothies are also just as good! I also loved the outdoor seating that they offer, shaded from the sun, its perfect. The girls that helped me inside were also very sweet, i hope that next time i get to meet the owner. i love staying connected with my lil community here in virgil village. If you wanna skip the lines at courage or sqirl and grab a juice/smoothie/ a bit to eat, this is the place to do it!
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
This place is mine and my wife's go to spot. It's local and delicious. There are places that just add love to their food and this is one of those places. Coffee is great, juices and smoothies are also great, but most of all the food!

Zach L.

Yelp
Virgil Cafe is a wonderful local joint. Menu has great offerings, food is fresh, tasty, and well presented, and Rose (our server) was so nice. I highly recommend you check out the fresh juices!

emma c.

Yelp
first time trying this place and OH MYY 10/10 , got a vanilla latte with condensed milk, soo good ! and the breakfast burrito with tater tots , definitely coming again !!
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
The coffee is lovely and the huevos a la mexicana were deliciously satisfying! The service was friendly and fast. Plenty of vegetarian options!

Ashley L.

Yelp
Me and my friend were in the area for the Squid Game 4.56k run and we came to get brunch because we were too early and to fuel up. We were originally trying to go to another cafe but stumbled upon this one on the way there, looked at the menu and thought the prices were good so we decided to give it a try. The service was great, and the food was even better. Definitely a hole in the wall food spot!
google avatar

Nery M.

Yelp
Pretty cool spot.... A few minutes away from where I live. I order the famous breakfast burrito and for 13.95 it's a pretty good burrito. Decent size and it was paired with some chips and a piece of fruit. They gave me red and green sauce, which was pretty good. Also service was great, the person upfront was friendly and they brought out the food quick. I'll be back to try out the steak and eggs

Lukas F.

Yelp
Great neighborhood joint with big portions and fast, friendly service. Their specialty coffees give all the trendy LA joints that are built on ~aesthetic vibes~ a run for their money.
google avatar

Marisela G.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place it was delicious and the service was excellent .small and cozy very clean I loved the music
google avatar

Dave V.

Yelp
This is the coffee shop I've been looking for. It is low-key, unpretentious, fairly reasonable, friendly and the food is good. Not amazing. But good. I had the Chicken pesto melt and my husband had the tuna melt. Both were delicious. The food arrived quickly, the server was super friendly. The decor is sparse...but I think this will be a reliable breakfast and lunch spot.

Christy R.

Yelp
I happened to be in the area and wanted to grab a late breakfast and coffee and found this coffee shop gem! Friendly staff and the chilaquiles burrito was delicious. I ordered a dirty chai and the staff offered to customize it with their French vanilla condensed milk because I couldn't decide: incredible. I have saved this location for the next time I'm nearby. They also had a small parking lot next door, super convenient for anyone in LA.
google avatar

Sherry C.

Yelp
Very nice placec with good food but one big drawback for me and is that the owner and his buddies, and there are usually three of them, hang out at one of the tables in the small space and laugh and talk amongst themselves, all very loud, and it gives it an unpleasant old guys place atmosphere. I actually feel like I'm an intruder. All they are missing is bocci balls or a board game.

Tina Y.

Yelp
You have to try the chilaquiles burrito with steak. Phenomenal service and the suggested coffee by the barista was delicious.

Niko O.

Yelp
Food was amazing! tried the Virgil's special smoked salmon Benedict staff are friendly. recommend

Esther K.

Yelp
Stopped by for brunch today. Food was good and prices were even better. Our server was very friendly and attentive. They said they opened about 5 months ago.

Shawn T.

Yelp
So kind! So affordable! And so tasty! Love coming here and getting a coffee and breakfast burrito! Couldn't even get a picture because I ate the burrito so fast!
