Virgil's - Upper West Side

This was a great spot. The service was hands down the best part! Lateaka was awesome. She was upfront about the best things on the menu, she was in such a good mood it made us feel good. And she was always around checking on us. I would recommend the fried pickles, pulled pork and mashed potatoes. Trash ribs weren't for me, but to each their own. Enjoy!

Beyond disappointed in the Mac and cheese I got today! Was NOTHING like the pictures on google. I expected baked Mac and cheese and got a soupy funny tasting Mac and cheese. Liquid cheese basically. No crisp top. Placed my order to go and the staff I encountered was friendly so service saved them.

I’ve ordered pick-up from this location three times, and unfortunately, each time, my food has been cold—even though I live just one block away. This consistent issue has left me feeling disappointed, as I was hoping for a better experience given the convenience. It’s starting to feel as though the quality of service might not be the same for all customers, which is deeply concerning. I sincerely hope this isn’t the case, as I believe in supporting local businesses that treat all patrons with equal respect. I hope the management will take this feedback seriously and make improvements to ensure all customers receive their food fresh and are treated fairly.

This was an order for takeout. The cornbread was awful. The chicken looks ugly but taste decent. The collard greens were undercooked and tasted like vinegar. Also, they lied because there's no way they put ham hock in it. The pie was old. The macaroni and cheese was disgusting worse than kraft. Thank God they didn't put the barbecue sauce on the food and had it on the side because it was absolutely revolting. The pork ribs were tough. The beef brisket had a nice taste but it was mostly fat. The pulled pork was decent.

In town from NY and the Service that we received by Lateaka was excellent. She made great recommendations and checked in regularly. The food was excellent and quite delicious.

food is fine ad usual, but ordered from virgil's and carmine's first time in a couple years and was absolutely shocked at the price increase! the eggplant parmigiana price increased while the portion decreased more than 50% and put as side or appetizer. wtf!

Great food and wonderful service. Thank you Lateaka. Got The Pit for two; we enjoyed it! Chicken and beans were my favorites. I also enjoyed the Berry Smash drink. My better have said the men's room was truly unique.

Came in for a quick breakfast when nearby places had long waits and it was delicious! We got the chocolate chip and peanut butter banana pancakes, and we couldn’t finish! Ronnie treated us extremely well and it was a great start to our morning hitting the strip!

Virgil's stays busy and if you plan on checking them out make sure you make a reservation. I personally didn't see what the hype was about. The food is mediocre by bbq standards but maybe it's the location and thw drinks. It's very loud and cramped. The restrooms are on the second floor which you have to walk through the cramped upstairs dining area to get to. I had ribs and brisket with Mac n cheese plus Brussel sprouts as sides. It was all average just like the presentation. On a plus side the servers are great even though they are stretched thin. If you just want any old bbq then this is the place for you but I'd venture someplace else for better flavor.

Virgil's is my very favorite place for ribs and Turkey Club sandwiches. I love the catfish too. The sides are hard to decide on because I want some of everything. They give you a large enough portion these days I find it hard to make room for dessert. If you haven't been to a Virgil's BBQ location you gotta go!

I have eaten at both the Times Square and the upper west side locations. Times Square has been reliable and very good but the upper west side location has consistently been bad and sometimes not edible. Fatty ribs and undercooked. poorly prepared. If you can avoid this location, you should.

Walking on 42nd st today we were going somewhere else they were closed on Sunday. Then I walked by Carmines. There was a sign saying Carmines sister Restaurant. So it was right across the street. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated. The food was amazing. The atmosphere was light and friendly. Our waitress was fun and funny. A lot of people were there having a great time.

Been a customer of Virgil's for many years, always at the restaurant. Ordered delivery and regretted the $50 it cost for a Virgil's salad, mac and cheese and corn bread. None of it was worth so much as a dollar. The salad was nothing but grease. The meat was just shreds and beneath the upper layer was totally chunks of fat, which were melting onto the lettuce. Everything was coated in grease. The salad was almost all lettuce, with two, yes two, cherry tomatoes and a few olives. It was so greasy that I threw it away. The corn bread muffins were tiny and flavorless. The mac and cheese was tasteless and pasty, like pasta mixed in glue. You've lost a loyal customer.

This was my Best experience out of many. Anthony in takeout was Amazing/Outstanding. He went above and beyond assisting with my order placement. Anthony is very a personable, he gets it and assists where needed. Anthony deserves a Promotion and a Raise! Kudos to Virgils for having Anthony on the team. Thank you Virgils and Anthony

My daughter ordered from here as a gift for my wife's knee surgery recovery. It was on11/19/22 We are seniors and live 2 blocks away from Virgils on the Upper West Side NYC. We had a menu at home and gave her the order. Well 21/2 hours go by and no food, no call, no delivery! I call my daughter and tell her and she is so upset! She calls Virgils and they tell her the delivery guy fell off his bike and they will redo the order. It is 2 blocks away. Finally food arrives 3 hours past ordering and it was ALMOST what we ordered! It was cold and the fried chicky was overfried! and the fries were cold and soggy. We ordered corn bread, NONE! We orderd 2 slices of Key Lime Pie@ $9.00 a slice! One was half the size of the other!!! We got baked macaroni which we didn't order to top this off!!!! I wish I could post pics cause I have em. NEVER EVER AGAIN ORDER FROM THIS JOINT OR EAT THERE.

I had the texas brisket sandwich from here and it was not bad at all! They gave a generous serving of brisket on the sandwich, along with some extra BBQ sauce. The meat was sliced thickly and tender, though it probably could have been smoked for just a touch longer. Staff were very friendly and prompt.

My wife and I had the pleasure of dining here earlier tonight. We really enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent. The place had a great BBQ vibe. As for the food, the hush puppies appetizer with maple butter was a generous serving and as good as it gets. My wife ordered the brisket with a side of BBQ beans and loved both. The brisket was very lean. It was well done and she appreciated that. I tried it and it was good but I prefer pink to be showing on the meat. I ordered pulled pork and smoked chicken. Both were solid. My cheese grits and coleslaw were too. I really liked the hot sweet and spicy BBQ sauce that was on every table along with a mild version and a mango and jalapeño BBQ sauce. We will definitely return on our next visit.

Horrible food. Google reviews are fake, buyer beware. Brisket tastes like cardboard. Even cardboard would be easier to digest.

Tastes ok but the portions were minuscule and the prices astronomical. I mean, straight robbery. Will never go again.

The food is good, however the service is terrible. Our time for pickup was 7:05. We show up at 7, they say it'll be about 10 mins. We go in to check on the order, another 10 mins...this kept happening til 7:45. 40 mins after our initial time given to us by Virgils. Really sucked. We ordered the trash ribs, which are miniature ribs. They were good. Also got the wings and these were great. Huge wings. The disappointment was the pulled pork sandwich and fries. Sandwich wasn't too good and the fries were soggy. Lots of other quality restaurants in the UWS that won't make you wait 40 mins in the cold for your order.

if you know holidays are busy for orders cartering ect... open earlier or have more staff like kids running this place

Decent but I would not go back. The ribs and brisket were all cooked well, but slightly dry tasting instead of juicy. The macaroni and cheese was bad, it tasted like colored water over pasta. The mashed potatoes and gravy was entirely too salty. They also forgot my beans. And the "banana pudding" tasted like a container of miracle whip, a ton of bananas, and maybe like 3 nilla wafers thrown in. Overall I would not return. For the price point I didn't expect the food to taste this average.

This food is inedible. Probably the worst take out I've ever ordered. Dry chicken with excessive seasoning, over cooked mac and cheese, repulsive collard greens. Just about everything was bad, as in really bad. No wonder there are so many bad reviews

Yesterday's cold windy weather made us ready for BBQ. Dinosaur's erratic delivery schedule led us to try Virgil's, previously avoided because it seemed comparatively pricey. However, menu was similar to Dino's (minus fried green tomatoes), so we chose the small family "Pig Out" platter, very reasonable after all, at about $50 for the two of us, undeterred by the online warning of 90-minute delivery. Not sure what to make of only (bad) reviews, from last spring. Of course we were starving when a hot tasty feast finally arrived! But we were not disappointed. Nothing was overly dry or super greasy--though Dino's onsite smoker produces distinctively superior BBQ, how could it not? Virgil's was still very tasty and a welcome change: Brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and ribs; full pints of beans and slaw; bag of warm cornbread. Only proviso: sauce and sides have a sweet edge. And meats, in a huge aluminum tub, were sauced uniformly. Suggest less sauce in the overall assembly--customizable via free accompanying 1/2 pint--and none on the chicken, please!

Wings are great and that's that. The greens were passable. The ribs are over spiced and smoked and closer to a jerky consistency. Dirty fries are ok but nothing special. Corn bread is more like a small corn muffin but a better choice than the biscuit which by the way I will never order again.

While Broadway scene and offices are closed as of this post, Times Square hotspot Virgil's Real BBQ has debuted a new outpost for takeout and delivery on the Upper West Side. One would expect the usual Southern comfort foods, filled with meaty ingredients, but also decadent desserts including key lime pie and banana pudding. When most are working from home, UWS residents don't have to travel far for a taste of Midtown memories.

Livia was awesome! Her energy was phenomenal. Scott was super great as well! The food was some of the best NYC has to offer! Possibly the best in Time Square!

Disappointing. Ribs were dry, chewy and loaded with unrendered fat. Wings came in a large puddle of grease, skin was soggy. Sauces had no flavor other than heat. Very expensive ($22 for 8 wings, which, after fees and tip, puts them at about $4 each). Brisket was also dry and crumbly; fell apart when served. "Free" coleslaw was about 2 tablespoons. These are difficult times for restaurants, but this was pretty bad even so.

I was happy to see this uptown. I ordered 1/4 rack of ribs w/2 sides. Ribs were dry. BBQ sauce felt like it came from a supermarke. max n cheese was horrid. Cheese tasted like that fake cheese sold in mac n cheese kraft boxes. I'm so bummed. I guess Dinosaur will have to still be the option. What a bummer!

Twice I placed a whole slap of ribs on line and and received ribs cut up and not the whole slap. The first time I ordered a whole slap as a pickup order I received a whole slap The second and third time I order a whole slap as a delivery order I received ribs cut up. When I called to complained I was tolde that they were too busy to replace my order but offered a credit which took a week. My next delivery order of a slap of ribs again they came cut up and the delivery would not take them back. When I called Virgil's I was told that the slaps always come cut up and that if I want a whole slap it has to be indicated when I place the order. Their web site does not state that you must indicate that you want a whole slap and my order states a whole slap not cut up ribs. I was not offered a replacement nor a credit on my card and both the staff and manager response to my complaint made me feel it was my fault and that I had to live with it. If my first were cut up and not a whole slap of ribs I would not have expected a whole slap on the two subsequent orders. This is the last time I will place an order from Virgil's since what is advertised is not what one receives. I will not recommend Virgils to others.
