How to Eat and Drink Your Way Through Eastern Market

"The famous bloody marys Vivio’s are worth braving the Saturday market crowds for. The spicy tomato-based cocktails come with a variety of garnishes such as the spicy Insanity Habañero, featuring habañero-infused vodka, pickle spear, lime, and a beer chaser. To eat, diners can’t go wrong with the spot’s mouth-watering mussels, which include a buttery portion of garlic bread for dipping. Specialty offerings include the spicy and sweet Jamaican Jerk Mussels with coconut rum, butter, pineapple juice, celery, and jerk spice." - Serena Maria Daniels

A Detroit Classic That Never Disappoints! Vivio’s is an absolute gem in the heart of Eastern Market. We stopped in today and were blown away by the flavors, service, and classic Detroit charm. We started with the Spanish mussels perfectly cooked, fresh, and loaded with bold, savory flavors. Easily some of the best mussels we’ve had in the city! The pastrami sandwich was another standout — stacked high, juicy, and full of rich flavor. It hit all the right notes of comfort and indulgence. To drink, I ordered the Virgin Gypsy Bloody Mary, and wow even without the alcohol, it was phenomenal! The flavor, spice, and presentation were on point. You can tell they take real pride in their Bloody Marys. Friendly service, great vibe, and consistently delicious food this is why Vivio’s remains a Detroit favorite after all these years. Can’t wait to come back! The only thing that I wish they had is just regular plates not the plastic one and silverware. I’m very big on being eco-friendly.

Been here several times and Wednesday has become my favorite day! Nicole, the bartender, makes awesome drinks and the food is always good. I’m kinda stuck on the mussels.

Google
Hidden treasure if you are looking for a delicious meal of mussels. Had a friend invite me to meet here and while it looks like your average bar, the mussels are their specialty and for good reason! They have several different options for broth - I went with the Tokyo which includes shrimp. Service was incredibly friendly, warm and welcoming. Highly, highly recommended!!

Google

Went here for lunch with my Ma since we both work close by. It wasn't too bad during lunch hour. The food and service were both good. Also liked that there was a lot of parking unlike some of the other places in the downtown area.

Stopped in here one Saturday afternoon with a few friends. Great little place. Love the atmosphere and the food was solid. Everything we ordered was great. The mussels were fantastic as was the Cheesesteak sandwich.

We were staying in Greektown for a run and dined in the night before for pizza. We had two pizzas, a salad, and the reuben between us and everything was delicious both fresh and leftover! They were busy around dinner time on a Saturday but we were well taken care of, seated quickly, and our food came out in a timely manner. The mushroom and pepperoni pizza and reuben were wonderful and we’ll definitely be back for these again!

Google
Came here after visiting the eastern market for the book fair event. The atmosphere, service and food were great. We ordered the shrimp po boy and Oklahoma sliders and both tasted great. Definitely will return here in the future.

Yelp
An Eastern Market institution. Depending on what time you arrive, there may be a good length wait. My friend was able to get us seats at the upstairs bar. One side of the menu is a selection of Bloody Mary's, varied from the classic, to Detroit originals, to a monster that constitutes your entire meal. We had loaded, and this was a solid BM. They also are known for mussels, and have several varieties as well. I had the mussels, but also a slice of my friend's pizza, which was excellent. I think your experience may depend on when you arrive, and they do not offer reservations.

Yelp
Dive bar/ restaurant. I had pizza and salad. Neither were good. Service is mediocre. There is an upstairs. I think mostly used for private events. There is a large parking lot (2-hour limit) and street parking. Both free. Two stars for an abundant amount of free parking.

Yelp
I make sure that when I'm in Eastern market that I always step into views and at least have one drink I like to keep the old places rolling. I bring my friends tell them my stories, however they were not impressed. Busy, as usual. But that wasn't the problem we found a seat upstairs which someone ran up and said there were so we didn't have to walk the stairs unless we had to. We wanted a couple drinks and some food and it took forever. I remember coming here on game days and it was never a problem even if you had a crowd of like 15 people at your table. The bloody Mary was mediocre, and that's what I go there for, and the food just missed the mark. I don't know if they were just short staffed? I'm hoping this. If that isn't the case I hope someone reads this and takes to Heart, we love Vivios and we want to see it thrive.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Love the food and the wait staff.... Try the Sicilian pizza and the mussels yum.

Yelp
Reminds me of the bar in "Cheers." There was a bar where I grew up as a kid in Kansas City that this bar really reminds me of, just down to earth, good, hardworking waitstaff and service, and the food here is really inventive. Has an Italian flair but they have something for everybody. Their Bloody Mary is the epitome of what a Bloody Mary should be. Nothing compares to them ... nothing. There should be more bars and restaurants like Vivio's. It's the kind of place you walk into and everybody there knows your name.

Shana M.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place. I'm a cilantro-hating vegetarian, so the cilantro-containing veggie burger was not something I wanted to order. The chef came up with a creative solution: a sweet potato/cranberry "burger" that was DELICIOUS! He didn't have to do that (I was ready to settle for sweet potato fries). He came over to see what I thought of it, which I appreciated. The server Rhonda was very friendly and efficient. To be treated like a valued customer instead of a pain in the a-- was WONDERFUL. Thank you, Vivio's!

Owen A.

Yelp
Always a solid place to grab a drink or some bar food. Check their specials. Fair price good quality. Just a fun bar. Also; it's a Steelers bar. Nice touch!
google avatar

Ash B.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Friday afternoon and had a $2 margarita slushy. Which was good and I was able to catch a slight buzz for $2 that's awesome. Lol. Margaret was my waitress and she was super friendly. She recommended the garlic Parmesan mussels with some Cajun added to it. They were very flavorful. You get a pot full for $13. The only thing I disliked about my visit is that everyone seemed to be coughing in there. One guy at the end of the bar kept coughing without covering his mouth. A waitress and another guy who worked there who was just standing by the door. Could've been a bad day but whatever it was it made me hurry up and finish my food and leave! However, if you are ever in the eastern market area it's cool for drinks. They have mainly pub style food. A lot of vintage things on the wall. They could use some dusting on the walls or perhaps a deep cleaning. Probably why everyone was coughing.

Yelp
Vivio's is an old school restaurant in the Eastern Market. I've heard they have great Bloody Mary's but unfortunately I don't drink those so I'll take everyone else's word for it! My husband and I shared some muscles and a big, delicious caesar salad last time we ate there. The muscles were delicious, although there were more empty shells than I'd prefer. The bread that came with them was delicious and good to soak in the sauce. The salad was nice and big for us to split! I tried a blue cocktail that was delicious, but unfortunately I don't remember the name of. Our server was attentive and quick! We went on a weekday night close to closing time and after a big rain so there weren't many people in the restaurant. Whether this is the reason for a good service or not, I'll take it!

Yelp
We used to love this place, but in the last couple of years, it has dramatically changed and not for the better. Plastic silverware, like a picnic or carryout. Pricey food items. Restaurant was ice cold and even colder in the restroom. We gad the Oklahoma sliders, good flavor. The antipasto salad was lacking, no olives, had to ask fir dressing and the meat and cheese were rolled up in the side. With only plasticware, it was very hard to cut and eat. Not sure we will be back.

Yelp
A group of 5 of us went to Vivio's late on a Saturday afternoon. It was pretty busy when we first walked in. My sister & I got iced tea & the chicken sandwich, two others got burgers, and one more had pizza. Our beverages came right away, but it took a while for the food to come. It didn't really matter, though, as we were tired, and I enjoyed looking at all the things in the room. The iced tea didn't really taste like anything to me, but I was really thirsty, so it didn't matter. It was cold and refreshing, which was all I wanted. The chicken sandwich was pretty good as well, and I liked the fries that came with it. I would go back if I was in the area again.
google avatar

Jocelyn D.

Yelp
We only had their famous bloody Mary's, but everything that came out of the kitchen looked fabulous. huge portions I would definitely recommend splitting something

Yelp
This place is a well-oiled machine! A family favorite for us. We always stop whenever we go to eastern market. They have SO many options for bloody Mary's. We love the crab cake one and the Pierogi bloody. But you can never go wrong with a classic!
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
It was not my favorite place. The menu seemed all over the place with burgers, Italian and seafood. The drink menu was also limited minus some margs and bloody marys. I wanted to order pizza but they mentioned their pizza oven was also down. The burger that I got was sub par. The interior of the restaurant was cool though. It was dim lit and more dive bar vibe. Service was fast though! I didn't love it but I didn't try the bloody mary's. That is the signature drink of the restaurant. Maybe the Bloody Mary would have changed my mind?

August S.

Yelp
I stopped by to buy a few drinks at the bar and to use the bathroom David (the manager) was at the door hellbent on not allowing me in arguing that there's no public bathroom and it's for customers only . I told him that I was a paying customer & that I was going to have drinks at the bar I proceeded to walk towards the bathroom and he shouted "YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED HERE" I ignored him and he pulled his phone out and threatened me by calling the cops . I'm now cited for trespassing . Horrible experience I wish I could give 0 stars never coming back here again.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Went in for a Bloody Mary. Did not disappoint. So so tasty. Quick service and will for sure go back
google avatar

Idnarb M.

Yelp
This restaurant is old and dirty. Very disappointed with the place. The menu is horrible and I'm glad it was because that could have lured me in beyond my better judgement. They pack people in and definitely it must be a safety hazard. The wait staff was not very helpful and I only had a Bloody Mary because I was with a group. The mix is similar to Zing Zang which is good. But, to say they have the top rated Bloody Mary when it is as easy to duplicate as going to the grocery store and buying a ready made mix is ludicrous.

Yelp
This place seems wildly popular, at least it was last weekend. I have seen this restaurant for years, but never ventured inside (not for any particular reason other than we normally do not eat lunch or dinner here). But I heard that you could carry open container at the market. I am not sure if this is a new rule or if I just learned it but people were carrying around cocktails from this place. When I arrived there was a very long line out the door and plenty of outdoor seating. I asked the man at the door if they did carry out drinks. He was very friendly and ushered me in the restaurant and over to the bar. All of the people who worked here were friendly and accommodating. The bar area was slammed and the poor bar tender was working harder than any human I have ever seen. Apparently they are known for their Bloody Mary's here, which I also had not known. I guess they are considered one of the best is the city? The state? They have all sorts of varieties, loaded with goodies. When I entered, I did not know what I was going to order, but I decided to try their classic which is only $8! A pretty good price for any cocktail. It was really delicious! I like Bloody's but I do not like them with too much pepper or too much horse radish. This was perfect and came with a pickle. It was easy to walk around the enjoy. When inside, I did see most people enjoying that drink with different levels of toppings. I saw they did have a nice looking food menu. I would be interested in trying some at some point. I see their muscles, burgers, muffalata, and pizzas are pretty popular, and I love all of those things! Since it was so crowded on this today, I would probably consider eating here with the family when it was a bit less crowded, but the vibe was fun and all the customers seem particularly festive and happy. Must have been the good drinks.

Yelp
The Famous Loaded will always impress. Kim at the upstairs bar was truly incredible. Friendly, helpful, intelligent, and spot on with her recommendations. Kudos to you, Kim!

Yelp
GREAT mussels! Tried the Spanish ones. They are outstanding! Nice little kick. Also tried the butter Parmesan. Good too! Mussels are served with melted butter & a small loaf of bread for sopping up the broth! OMG - cant wait to go back.

Yelp
Love love love Vivio's!! The atmosphere is great, the service is great and soo is the food!! When in Detroit, Vivio's is definitely the place to come to!!

Yelp
We make a point to visit every time we are in town. Great atmosphere, great food, friendly staff. The owner is such a nice guy. We love this place. Get the chicken wings you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Celebrating my birthday with good friends last week, we decided to meet at Vivio's, a favorite I hadn't been to in years as I had been living out of state for a time. What fun we had at this establishment. Some things never change and the fun vibe is still there after all these years. The mussels were outstanding! I had the original but there are several choices. The Bloody Mary was also out of this world (a dozen or so choices). Mary, our server, took great care of us. Service was excellent. Stop in when you get a chance. Lots of fun.
google avatar

Amber J.

Yelp
The best Bloody Mary in town !!! My husband and I came here on sunny Saturday while shopping at the Eastern Market ! I had the Detroiter with a basket of French fries! Rhonda our server was perky and so sweet!
google avatar

Dawn V.

Yelp
OMG how I love this place- and every time I go, I wonder why I'm not going more often! And now they have a new chef, (Dave? Said the waitress), who made this salmon sliders special that were just so so good! (We brought 2 home for my husband to try because we ordered so much food and he loved them too!) This is the place to bring any idiot of Detroit- and maybe that's you, lol!- to experience true bloody Mary's and mussels- no one does either better. This time it was the Big D Bloody Mary, (I'm usually not so indulgent but it's my bday!), so just check out the pics- and the Jamaican/jerk mussels (coconut rum involved!) and one of the burgers- those are all good too. And ring the bell on your way out because I already know the service was good!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Ordered the Parmesan mussels. The serving size was pretty large with a side of two garlic bread slices and a butter dip. The garlic bread was crispy but not heavy on the garlic. The mussel sauce didn't have much of a taste with the Parmesan but was still a good meal overall. Would want to try something else next time.
google avatar

Stacia G.

Yelp
Their game is strong on bloody Mary's. This is the reason I went here as I had to challenge myself with the detroiter! It's huge and comes with bacon, asparagus, hard boiled egg, salami stick, and prosciutto filled olives. It's delicious and a bit pricey as it is 3 times bigger than the normal ones.
google avatar

Whitnee D.

Yelp
Great service, great food, great atmosphere. We went here after visiting the Eastern Market and it was conveniently right across the street. The first thing I noticed was how kind and accommodating the host was as we had a larger party of 10 (turned out to be 12) people. After getting seated we had the most amazing waitress - it was obvious that she had quite a few tables but she didn't let that change her mood towards us. She was quick at getting our drinks, food and receipts. I ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and it was delicious- quite a few people wanted my food lol. The burger also looked really good as did the mussels. I look forward to coming back soon. Can't believe I forgot to take a pic of my food whoops.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
This place is a staple on a Saturday for me. You go to Eastern Market and hit Vivios for some grub. That's just the way it goes! The service is always top notch and the scenery overlooking the Market is tops!
google avatar

Deanna D.

Yelp
Excellent Bloody Mary's!! They have a menu to choose from. I chose the cocktail shrimp topped one....delicious. Emily was an amazing waitress. You could tell she really loves her job. She is kind, helpful with suggestions and very attentive. I tried their mussels and was very impressed. (I've never ate mussels before). I'll definitely be going back soon.
google avatar

Brett S.

Yelp
Best place place for drinks and grub after work. Toni is our waitress every week at our favorite table and always makes sure we have a full drink. The best in Detroit!
google avatar

Dale L.

Yelp
Great food, and daily specials, Bloody Mary's are what all others judge against! Top notch!!!!
google avatar

Sonni H.

Yelp
Delicious burger and I don't love beef. I don't like Bloody Mary's but I tried one since that's what they specialize in. I still don't like them lol. BUT it was amazing looking so if you like them I feel like that's the place to get one

Linda H.

Yelp
Love Vivio's in Detroit, I mean, how can you go to Eastern market and not go to Vivio's for one of their famous bloody Mary's... It's a staple of eastern market has been there forever. Anybody who hasn't been should definitely try it!!!

David G.

Yelp
Great service. But. Very watery bloody Mary's. Very disappointed. Also skimped on the sweet tots. Seems to be going down hill lately.

Steve G.

Yelp
Cool pub with a hip vibe. Fast service and delicious food. Had the burger with pastrami on top - wow. With onion rings too. Leftover's even tasted good the next day. Our server, Mary was awesome.
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Some people wonder much bacon should be in a Bloody Mary. I have a better question: how much Bloody Mary should be in your bacon? Vivio's will help you answer that question. As the manager told us during our brief (5 minute) wait for a table, "we put bacon in just about everything". You had me at "bacon". Does bacon belong in a crabcake po' boy? Of course it does. Does bacon belong in a lobster roll? Sure. There was no bacon in my wife's mimosa, but it wouldn't surprise me if they added some. The crabcake had a decent amount of crab in it, which I found to be a rarity in most restaurants. Most places cheat you by using too much breading. The lobster roll was technically a langostino roll, but they did mention that in the menu. This distinction bothers some people, but not me. It was delicious. The fries are battered, similar to Rally's fries. Awesome. Vivio's has the look and feel of a classic bar, but it rocks and rolls like a well-oiled machine. They were PACKED, but I don't think our waitress stopped moving the whole time. This didn't stop her from being friendly and attentive. They have a bell at the exit that you were encouraged to ring if you've gotten good service. We ring that bell. You should come by sometime and do the same.
google avatar

Alexandra R.

Yelp
My bestie and I had so much fun on a beautiful Tuesday! We sat outside and had lunch and bloody Mary's. They were busy but the servers were so friendly and fun. We tried the bruschetta appetizer that was on the specials and it was SO good! The tomato's were fresh and even my 4 year old love it! She ordered Garlic Parmesan Mussels and the bowl was filled to the brim she couldn't even finish them. I ordered the corned beef, it came with a side of chips. My son had chicken fingers and fries. Everyone enjoyed their food and my son ended up eating half my sandwich. I love downtown, I love sunny days where we can sit outside and enjoy good food and good people. I'm so glad we made the trip down for early lunch. If you enjoy bloody Mary's you must check out Vivios!
google avatar

Betsy K.

Yelp
This is one of the places that I somehow missed throughout the years that is right next to Eastern market. I will be back again and again and again, I can guarantee you that. They specialize in bloody Mary's and they had some amazing combinations. A lot of them could be your drink and combined. Our group of five tried many of them-they were all excellent. Caesar salad, Ruben, and seafood sandwich were all excellent as well. There was great atmosphere in the restaurant-filled with lots of laughing, happy people. We had a fantastic waitress!!! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Schen W.

Yelp
There is a great variety of Bloody Marys. Everyone loved their different drinks. The Maryland Mary with crab cakes was a meal in and of itself. The Famous Loaded and Detroit Distillery bloody Mary's were a hit too. Both the Tomato Basil and Pub style mussels are awesome! Split the yummy seafood melt. Portions were generous. Waitresses were awesome! We had a great ladies brunch.

Susie T.

Yelp
Aside from the delicious food, and delightful Bloody Mary's, their waitstaff are the absolute best. We have 2 adult "children" with special needs and they seem to sense it immediately and treat them with unequaled kindness, respect and care. From bringing my son (24) a baby beer when he wanted to try one, to rushing out fries to my crying, overwhelmed, hangry daughter. It is a life-changing warmth to us.

Yelp
Popped in here randomly after checking out the Eastern Market. This was a top choice online so we went with it, glad we did! This place has a lot of food options to choose from, no matter what you like or are in the mood for. Came here with my BF. We started out with getting a few of the local Michigan beers. I have to say the Wango Mango was just what we needed after being outside on a near 100° day all morning/afternoon. We always like trying stuff we've never had before and they had a lot of mussels options and we decided to give that a try. We got the Parmesan ones and a side of the Cajun to try, as we were having a hard time deciding between those 2 options. We were glad that it explained how to best eat mussels on the menu and we referred to that for us first timers. These mussels were so good and buttery, oh my. We anticipated it being similar taste to an oyster and we were surprisingly mistaken (weren't a fan of those). The mussels themselves came out in pot with a lid, in a buttery broth, with melted parmesan cheese on top, with a side plate of garlic bread. There were a good amount too, like 25 if I had to guess. We both ended up loving something we had never had before, which is always a win for us! My BF got The Detroiter, which was a loaded chicken sandwich, with cheese, bacon, lettuce, onion, etc. This came with fries. He said it was a. Great sandwich, just was so full from the mussels that he had to take half of it home. I got the crab cake po boy, as I can't get enough of crab cakes. The crab cake came out in a full bun, with a creamy Cole slaw, and it came with kettle chips. This sandwich was great and I would for sure order it again! Didn't realize till after we were here that this place is known for their Bloody Marys and was voted best Bloody Mary in Detroit by a few sources. After discovering that, we decided to go all out and try the one they were known for, splitting it between us. THAT BLOODY MARY WAS HUGE! Honestly could be a small meal in itself! If you love bloodys, it's so worth it! We had the most lovely waitress too. I wish I got her name. Young, blonde haired, super nice and friendly. She reminded me so much of a friend from back home, it kept playing tricks on me. She commented on my bracelets and wallet, as we had a similar style. She was great and wanted to shout her out. We left stuff and were glad we could walk our lunch off around the market area!

Yelp
Went shopping at Eastern Market with the plan of lunch of Yummy Bloody Marys and Mussels, we were not disappointed! The menu has changed a bit, but for the better. There was a slight wait for a lower level table for 2 (I have trouble with stairs sometimes), all in all, it wasn't a long wait, a line started behind us with larger groups, they were seated fairly fast also. Our waitress, TONI, was lovely. I promised I'd give her a shout out, lol. The table next to us ordered these huge bloody Marys that ran $20 but there was a whole meal gracing the triple sized mugs, some of the goodies were: pickled asparagus, hard boiled egg, bacon, some salad green, hunter sausage, prosciutto stuffed green olives, maybe shrimp and more .... All I know is they needed a separate plate to unload all the yummies. If you're in the area of Eastern Mkt, give Vivio's a try
google avatar

Yelp
Parking Free at the Market area. Service Friendly, attentive. Atmosphere He stiric Detroit. Think Cheers bar Detroit style. Beverage ( we didn't eat-just tried the Bloody Mary). I never tried a Bloody Mary before but if you haven't-THIS is the place!!! Wow! So many choices! I had the fully loaded and my friend had the shrimp. If you look on the back of the menu, there is a more loaded one but this was FAB!! 2 limes, a pickle, 3 asparagus spears, 2 crab spy bacon strips. And a lettuce leaf. Wow! Oh and a spear with 2 large olives and a quarter piece of cheese. Really good. The shrimp was awesome as well. Summary If you enjoy or never had a Bloody Mary, this is THE PLACE!

brenden m.

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and I can definitely say that this is my favorite food so far. Ronda and Dan made me feel at home here. If you aren't a picky eater let Ronda choose what you eat you're not gonna be disappointed. The place seems small from outside but is huge. Lovely staff, lovely food, if I lived here I'd 100% be a regular. GET THE MUSSELS!!!! ps. i'm a bad photographer but the portions were amazing.

Yelp
So this is the 2nd time I came here and the service is just as good as it was last time but this time I had the Rueben and the sauerkraut literally melts in your mouth and the cheese is so delicious it is by far one of the best sandwiches I have ever had, I also had the "Big D" which thier biggest Bloody Mary. I had it last time too and I have to say that it is a meal all in its own.

Yelp
Excellent service, Margaret was the best. Great, amazing Bloody Mary menu. Loved the people and the atmosphere. Good pizza too!

Yelp
We had a delicious meal. I was upset they stopped serving breakfast at 11. Our coffee tastes old but Bloody Mary Loaded was amazing with cheese, olives, bacon. Spicy asparagus and a McClure's pickle spear. The Philly cheesesteak was a bit salty for me. The serving was more than generous I could only eat half. The pulled pork was moist and juicy and delicious.
