I live in New Orleans East and always pass this place without thinking much of it. It just looks like a big house. I have no idea how long this place has been here, but I can only assume that it's older than me! Before Hurricane Katrina, there was a Shell gas station right next to it that was blocking the view to see the restaurant from Chef Menteur Highway.
One day, my brother asked me if I wanted to go eat at Vucinovich's for their Thursday special. I said, "Voo-chino-what?? What are you saying?" He had to repeat it a few times and spelled it out for me. He told me that the special was "Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and Fried Chicken Filet" and that we had to go get some. He went a few times with his friends before and I didn't even know it existed. I decided to go and I expected us to leave New Orleans East. He just pulled up to this restaurant on Michoud Blvd and I am just MIND BLOWN. At this time, I was a skinny little teenager and I can eat like I'm always at an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. Usually I would eat my meal and still want to eat, but the special actually filled me up! A different time, I was craving onion rings and I ordered some. They give you a mountain load of them, so you definitely can share.
This place has a large gravel parking lot and is only open for lunch time. This place does get pretty busy with nearby workers and such, so don't be surprised if you see a filled parking lot when you decide to eat here. When you walk in, there are a bunch of tables and a counter where you order. The man at the counter will always joke with you like you have been friends with him for years. The restaurant is like a big homey cafeteria where you order your food at the counter and pick it up on the side.
Overall, it's a nice restaurant with great lunch specials and po boys. Call ahead to ask them what their daily specials are, because sometimes they change. I can proudly say that you don't have to worry about Thursday's specials changings! Come hungry because they really take care of you and make sure you leave full!
