The Best Meat and Threes, Hot Plates, or Plate Lunches in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This winner in New Orleans East is wonderfully down home in a setting where everyone is treated like kin. Owned by the family’s third generation, Vucinovich’s keeps grandma’s recipes in rotation. Recent specials include the popular fried double chicken breast with spaghetti meat sauce and hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes and peas. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., come hungry." - Beth D’Addono

We were referred here from a friend and the food was fantastic! Leaving hungry isn't an option. Friendly staff, great food and fair prices!

Nicole R

Google
I had a craving for onion rings and decided to get a small order along with fries. Good thing I didn’t get the large. The small order was enough to feed three people. I wish it was the thick cut real onion rings instead of the crinkly string onions. I’ll have to go back for some actual food because everything looked delicious.

Chris Canary

Google
This place is no frills but do yourself a favor and grab a shrimp poboy. You won’t regret it.

VeSean Bogan

Google
Tried this place out twice this week and they have not disappointed. I had their shrimp poboy which was fresh n delicious... got me thinking they make their own French loaf. Then their spaghetti n meatsauce w/ 2 fried chicken breast and garlic bread. Goodness gracious. That was so good. I hope I work by yall for a while cuz ur food will be a part of my diet lol. Nice country feel to the place. Great customer service. Thank yall for a good lunch

James Leforet

Google
Service with a smile and a bit of humor! Food is delicious and the servings are plentiful. I'll be back.

Jessica Skarin

Google
So. Much. Food. Had the special, spaghetti with meat sauce, fried chicken, and garlic bread (if you can't tell from the picture, there are 2 pieces of garlic bread and a Whole plate under that chicken). I took about 5 lbs of leftovers home. Service was fast and good was amazing. Definitely recommend.

Mitch Marcello

Google
Fantastic hole-in-the-wall joint. Only opens for lunch. String fried onions are excellent; food is homemade and delicious.

Keith Kelleher

Google
Great place for lunch! Daily specials are the best around!

Yelp
Hole in the wall place, nothing fancy, but the food was great! The staff was friendly and it was clear no one who entered had been there multiple times and many commenting to me that they have been coming for as long as they've been open. I had a salad and it was plentiful.

Yelp
The entertainment is 100% The food is terrific !! Wish they were in St.Bernard parish

Claudio B.

Yelp
Plenty of food for the price Had the oyster po boy and it was great It's counter service by very friendly people Would definitely recommend

Yelp
We took a detour off of I10 to see the Tiny Castle on Irish Bayou and found this local Cajun lunch spot! The owner greeted us at the counter and took our orders. The Red Beans and Rice had so much sausage in it, you didn't need the side, but dat is how day do it! Thank you for the hospitality, kind words, and outstanding food!

Josh D.

Yelp
Best hole-in-the-wall seafood restaurant in New Orleans in my opinion. Plus, these are the biggest food portions you'll ever find.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
Nice secluded spot. The food is great and the service is wonderful. It gets packed during lunch ours do to the surrounding plants and hard workers. Call ahead of time abs ask for the daily special. On the menu they have handhelds like po boys, sandwiches and burgers.
google avatar

Yelp
Vucinovich is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant for truckers and New Orleans East residents. They're only open for lunch time. Got the Thursday special - fried double chicken breast with spaghetti meat sauce. The breast is almost as big as the togo plate. Flavor-wise was pretty good. And to go with the meal, I got a bottle of green grape soju.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
The chicken and spaghetti special on Thursday's is my go-to! The meal could feed two. Massive! Onion rings were yummy too. Unfortunately, since Covid hit, the menu is much smaller so many items were unavailable which prevents me from ordering on non-Thursdays.

Yelp
Disaster, and contrary to other yelp reviews. You ever see the movie "Vacation", and the scene where they visit Cousin Eddy, and Clark goes to bite into the sandwich and it explodes/sloppily slides all over the place?... That was my experience Also, $16 bucks for a sandwich with chips & drink? C'mon... The roast beef was well done and over cooked, and just not that tasty... Like I said, contrary to other yelp reviews. The overall experience was sub-standard and disappointing.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food , close to work but a little pricey! Nice server! We go here a few times yearly from work !
google avatar

Todd A.

Yelp
So I was here from Denver and just wanted a lunch place that gave you your moneys worth. This is that place. Mom and pops place and the portions, out of this world. Go hungry, and enjoy. I ordered a half chili dog. It had 4 home made dogs and enough chili for a whole meal. It was a lot. The potato salad was the best I've had. Must try!
google avatar

Brennen W.

Yelp
Very homey, food was beyond amazing! Took my boss and he was throughly satisfied. Will definitely be stopping by again

Yelp
This off the beaten path place is pretty great. I loved the service and the owner (you'll know him as soon as you walk in from the accent) was a real sweetheart. We got the debris fries and I had a club sandwich. Portions are huge here and made to order. You might as well get a to go box when you place your order because you will be taking some home for later. Trust me. It's one of those places where you order at the counter, are called up to get your food, fill your own drinks and clean your own table kind of spot, so if that's not your thing go elsewhere. But if you like feeling like you're eating lunch at your mom and dem's like I do you will love Vucinovich's.
google avatar

Momo B.

Yelp
CAJUN LUNCH FOR THEM BIG FOLKS If you're not into authentic Vietnamese foods, Vucinovich is a great Cajun alternative. Truly a popular eastside locals' lunch spot. Its been here for 40 years plus. The employees are both witty and humorous. The local dialect and accent makes it all that much more authentic. Got a huge savory meatball sandwich to share. All the sandwiches and hot plate lunches are seriously sized for big hungry people. Too bad the food can't make me taller by six inches. LoL

Yelp
I live in New Orleans East and always pass this place without thinking much of it. It just looks like a big house. I have no idea how long this place has been here, but I can only assume that it's older than me! Before Hurricane Katrina, there was a Shell gas station right next to it that was blocking the view to see the restaurant from Chef Menteur Highway. One day, my brother asked me if I wanted to go eat at Vucinovich's for their Thursday special. I said, "Voo-chino-what?? What are you saying?" He had to repeat it a few times and spelled it out for me. He told me that the special was "Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and Fried Chicken Filet" and that we had to go get some. He went a few times with his friends before and I didn't even know it existed. I decided to go and I expected us to leave New Orleans East. He just pulled up to this restaurant on Michoud Blvd and I am just MIND BLOWN. At this time, I was a skinny little teenager and I can eat like I'm always at an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. Usually I would eat my meal and still want to eat, but the special actually filled me up! A different time, I was craving onion rings and I ordered some. They give you a mountain load of them, so you definitely can share. This place has a large gravel parking lot and is only open for lunch time. This place does get pretty busy with nearby workers and such, so don't be surprised if you see a filled parking lot when you decide to eat here. When you walk in, there are a bunch of tables and a counter where you order. The man at the counter will always joke with you like you have been friends with him for years. The restaurant is like a big homey cafeteria where you order your food at the counter and pick it up on the side. Overall, it's a nice restaurant with great lunch specials and po boys. Call ahead to ask them what their daily specials are, because sometimes they change. I can proudly say that you don't have to worry about Thursday's specials changings! Come hungry because they really take care of you and make sure you leave full!

Steven P.

Yelp
Has everything you would ever want for lunch. The classics are all here and the daily specials are always hard to pass up. Very reasonably priced as well!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a terrific family diner that will make you feel like you've stepped into a bygone era. I felt like I'd stepped into the 1970s (and I mean that in the best possible way). Open only for lunch, this is a counter service place where you the locals go, which is appropriate, because you will be eating food that is absolutely local. Think comfort food, with substantial portions. The onion rings were divine (and I'm not even an onion ring fan!). The gumbo was top notch, as were the fried shrimp. As a capper, the price point is terrific. You'll leave with your belly full and your wallet intact.
google avatar

Charli P.

Yelp
Hubby and I stopped for lunch and loved it. This is one of those places locals know about. I ordered the club sandwich and it was huge. Definitely enough for two to share. Hubby wanted a shrimp po-boy and he was very surprised at the size. Needless to say the portions are generous. The food was awesome! Friendly staff! They made us feel right at home. Only open for lunch and it does fill up fast.
google avatar

Sharell F.

Yelp
I ordered two oyster and Fish plates from them today and I'm dissatisfied with the size of the food. The bread is extremely hard, oysters were very small and the fish was thin, and small. The potato salad taste like egg salad. The best thing on the plate was the tarter sauce. The service was friendly, but the food was not worth the price they are charging.

Jacob D.

Yelp
This place gives you that down home, good for the soul feeling. Great food and customer service. Greeted the second I walked in and food was served quickly for lunch. The fish and shrimp platter did not disappoint!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Yup... great place to grab a sandwich!!! While I was waiting for my fried oyster Po'boy, another customer went to the counter to get her plate.. it had a HUGE piece of chicken on it that was the size of a table plate!!!! Then she had another plate FULL of spaghetti and red sauce!!! OMG... I wish i had ordered the Special!!! Love the Po'Boy and the fries were outstanding!!! I'm definitely going back the next time I'm in that area!!

D A.

Yelp
Great service and good food. Short hours but it's a great lunch spot. Would recommend if you are in New Orleans East during lunch hours.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
So much good food on one platter. I had a platter full of fried shrimp and fish that was so fresh, light and tasty that I inhaled it. The customer service at the restaurant was also top notch. I believe the owner took my order and I normally would frown on a man I don't know calling me 'baby' but it was so endearing that I giggled as I took my to-go bag from him. I'll definitely be back on my next visit to NOLA.
google avatar

Shercole K.

Yelp
Okay, I definitely love this play. I knew it would be a prize when the guy behind the register told one of the employees in an authentic local accent put some more cups out baby! So I was excited from there. I had the pleasure to try the chicken livers, with potato salad. Yes, I actually like livers and it was wonderful and fried to perfection. I actually enjoyed my meal. The venue is fairly big so its accommodating for those looking to dine in. If you like fried foods, they do them right here not too hard and not to soft, just right. I visited during lunch time and they handled the crowds quickly. The place is clean and good things to offer if you just happen to be in Michoud or on your way or back from a visit to Chalmette or even Slidell.

Yelp
35 years as a restaurant in NO. That speaks for itself. This is where locals go to eat or smart tourists who use Yelp. It's only open for lunch. You can order from the menu or get the daily special. It's all good. Portions are large and the atmosphere is casual. It's on the east side of town and a little out of the way but worth it. My Friday seafood special had crawfish étouffée, fish, shrimp, fries, bread and a drink for $15. Most of the menu items are less. This place is worth 4 stars. I recommend.
google avatar

John L. H.

Yelp
This is a pretty good place for lunch. I had a roast beef po-boy and an order of fries. The rest of my group had the seafood special, a muffeletta and an order of onion rings. Everyone was pleased with their meal. The po-boy used the right bread (leidenheimer) and was pretty good. There was only one size for the muffeletta (whole) and it was giant. You definitely won't leave hungry. It is pretty far away from everything but I would definitely go back if I were out there again.
google avatar

Waz A.

Yelp
Amazing, family-run, genuine New Orleans food!! Po Boys were some of the best i've had.
google avatar

Reese H.

Yelp
We ate lunch here the first day of Firefighting school. The amount of food you get is freaking amazing!!! And it's not super expensive. The guys behind the counter are very willing to pick at you and poke fun light heartedly. I love to tell them we are from Alabama!!!! That raises the bar to a whole new level. Great place to eat but you better bring a buddy and an appetite.
google avatar

Sam H.

Yelp
, I'm at a lost for words! I really use to like this place! I went there on 3/2/2020 thought I would take my fiancee to a hidden Gem however I was wrong! I've eaten at a few restaurants in several places outside of New Orleans and think I'm a pretty good judge of good quality food. However yesterday was a complete disappointment. The fish batter was a mixture of cornmeal and flour which isn't working, the Fried Liver which is normally fresh wasn't. It seemed a little old. We'll I don't know if I'll be going back any time soon to give them another chance.
google avatar

Adrienne V.

Yelp
Excellent food! Well seasoned everything! My friend had the meatball po boy-so good! I had half(in my opinion, whole) shrimp po boy and half of soft shell crab po boy and loved it!!! The onion rings, sweet potato fries and bread pudding were awesome!! Thank you so much!!!
google avatar

MAJ B.

Yelp
Ya' know... mostly I just check in. Even though I have reviewed this place before- I must say, " thanks to the Grizzly Adams looking guy who convinced me to eat HogHead Cheez" I've always heard that was pig brains, lips, and Assholes. But it was pretty good. More important, I ordered a hamburger 10 minutes before closing and got no hassle. It was awesome, hopefully NOT because he spit on it! : )
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
This is a classic old school New Orleans restaurant, from the poboys to the lunch specials this place is a little reminder of the ways things used to be! They even do an in house hogs head cheese and the traditional New Orleans style shoestring onion rings! If you are in the area this place is definitely a must try.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
Vucinovich's is a real diamond in the rough, and out here in no man's land, its very rough. Only open for lunch the place makes decent poboys, but the real treasures are the daily specials. Especially when he does fried chicken. The bone on fried chicken is some of the best I've ever had. some of these specials are static: Mondays are red beans, Thursdays are spaghetti, and Fridays are gumbo or Shrimp Creole. The other two days, Russell fixes whatever he damned well pleases
google avatar

Wanda N.

Yelp
This Resturant is the best place for poboys and daily special plates! I wouldn't go anywhere else! Everything made fresh, hot (warmth)and tasty ! The owner is friendly (assuming the man at the counter) and have a good sense of humor! Highly recommend this Resturant ! Hours: Open at 11-2pm Advice: come early before the crowd
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Great local place with plate lunches and sandwiches. Lunch special daily. Great for quick lunch.
google avatar

Hugh P.

Yelp
Real Cajun food!
google avatar

Thomas N.

Yelp
The daily specials are big enough for two people to share. Wednesday lunchtime special of spaghetti and a HUGE chicken breast filet Very limited hours, but worth the trip for lunch.
google avatar

Cherie B.

Yelp
The daily specials are out of this world. You defiantly get your money's worth. The panned fried pork cutlet and Shrimp pasta hit the spot with enough to take home for another meal. If you are out in the Michoud area it's a must stop
google avatar

Gladys B.

Yelp
A great place to visit, our office Gardner Realtors East went today to celebrating our quartely birthdays the food was great and the staff was so polite.
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. Family ran and the man up front (probably the owner) is great! Food is always on point! (Even though it's only my third time here)
google avatar

Clay J.

Yelp
Huge portions, everything is big enough for a meal and half for mere mortals. The po boys are huge and stuffed full on fresh bread. Always check out the daily special board. The day with spaghetti and fried chicken is the best. The portion of both the spaghetti and the chicken is each enough for its own meal.

Elaina C.

Yelp
I tried this place today since I forgot my lunch at home. Co-workers recommended it. I ordered the catfish platter, and it definitely wasn't worth the $15 price tag that was attached. It came with four filets that were heavily breaded and could have used a little more time in the fryer, in my opinion. The fries were soggy, and the salad was pretty good. I'm giving them three stars because I'm hoping that the soggy fries can be attributed to mine being a takeout order, which doesn't always fare well in styrofoam containers, and that next time I'll ask for extra crispy fish.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Being from a Cajun family I felt right at home. Great atmosphere and delicious authentic food, in right sized (gigantic) portions reminded me of going to my Grandparents. I'm not down here often, but I'll definitely be eating here for lunch when I am. Staff are fun and friendly. All around great experience.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
Way out off the beaten path in New Orleans East lies a fairly small restaurant with a rock parking lot. Turn into this parking lot! You will be greeted by a family that knows how to cook. Russell and his family own and operate this gem and love what they do. From spaghetti to fired chicken to shrimp creole, Russell can do it all. Be sure to get some of his homemade PP dressing and french bread. You're going to need a to go box here and it will be just as good left over as it was hot on the plate.

Scott B.

Yelp
Loved it! Real down-home place and great food. Love the guy who rang us up and the banter with him...and the food is really great, local cajun style. He told me the special was something that he has ran for 38 years I think he said...and I see why. Great stuff! Gumbo, fried catfish, fried shrimp and fires...for like 13$ or something. Ridiculous amount of food and so good. Outside NASA's Michodud Assembly Facility in semi rough area...you'd probably never go unless going on site with USG, NASA or private companies on site...But worth it!!

Janet S.

Yelp
The man at the counter offends and annoys me EVERY time I eat at Vucinovich's. Either he won't tell me what "PP" is on the salad (turns out it's Parmesan Peppercorn dressing, and it's delicious) or he laughs when I call in an order and say ill pick it up in 5 or 10 minutes. Or answering my question about the special by saying with a harrumph, "For the last 35 years, spaghetti...". For most places, I would never go back after a series of experiences like this. But I have to go back here because the food is absolutely delicious, especially the fried oyster dinner, with all salad (ask for no onions) and PP dressing.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
I ordered a veggie sandwich. At first they shocked because they had never made one, as it turned out- she made me one of the best veggie sandwiches I have ever eaten! Great place, worth checking out!!
google avatar

Donna W.

Yelp
I had a ham poboy, the poboys are big enough for two people or one really hungry person. Every plate served there was brimming with food, weather it was the catfish, chicken fried steak or hamburger. You get your money's worth by stopping here for lunch. The atmosphere is casual and the two gentlemen taking orders are hilarious. Would definitely go back when we are in town again.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I've lived in N O East for years. Unfortunately this restaurant has been forgotten about, possibly either due to location or lack of adequately getting its name made visible throughout the East. I will however revisit this restaurant. It was not very memorable when I visited several years ago. The food was good though . Thanks Yelp for the app!
