Where To Eat & Drink On Your Napa Road Trip

"Sandwiches are the name of the game at Giugni’s, a small takeout-only deli in St. Helena that’s been around for almost 20 years. You can customize your sandwich with things like honey smoked turkey or pastrami - just be sure to get an extra side of Giugni Juice, an herby, olive oil-based dressing that you should pour all over your sandwich. Order ahead if you’re on a tight schedule as the lunch rush line can get long." - julia chen 1

The 20 Best Restaurants In St. Helena

"If you’re in need of a sandwich, this St. Helena institution is where you want to be. Giugni’s is every bit the old-timey country store you’d expect in a small town, with shelves filled with classic candies, a couple of tables, and a very busy takeout operation. There are no fancy designer sandwiches here: it’s a build-your-own situation with an extensive list of meats, cheeses, and add-ons. The only mandatory move is the tangy Giugni Juice, (a secret sauce with herbs and a red wine vinegar base) with a cult following that gets poured liberally on top of every sandwich—although we prefer it on the side to avoid them getting soggy, especially if we’re taking them on the road." - christina julian

"This Italian deli has been serving build-your-own sandwiches since the 1970s. Pick your bread base (we recommend the dutch crunch roll), and then take your pick from the endless meat, cheese, and fixings choice, including “Giugni juice”, the deli’s famous homemade balsamic vinaigrette, which we suggest adding to anything and everything you order. Arrive before 11am or call ahead to order, as the line can be long, and remember to bring cash. Photo @whatgraceeats"

Thirty years of coming here, and usually an hour long drive, and every time it’s worth it. Guigni’s is an institution. Get your sandwich with Guigni juice.

Austin

Google
This place is a classic. It’s not cheap but it’s fresh and good. Their onion bread and smoked Gouda cheese is *chefs kiss* and the Guigni juice is literally some of the best sandwich “sauce” of all time. So good. Old school messy wall vibes.

Isaac Mendoza

Google
I’ve been coming here ever since I was a child. Nothing has changed. There aren’t many sandwich spots that can compare. This is the S tier sandwich shop. The atmosphere is amazing filled with unique items all over the wall. Right in the center of St. Helena. Even if you don’t want a sandwich you can always grab a snack.

Caroline Massey

Google
This place is a classic little deli! Their sandwiches are always amazing, and they have a wide variety to pick from. I recommend getting Guigni juice on your sandwich. They have tons of other things like drinks, chips, old-time candies/ treats, and my favorite deviled eggs ever.

Google
Can’t take order without phasing out. Lack of interest. Order wrong after laborious failed attempt to communicate. Employees and owners just standing around “annoyed” that someone is ordering sandwiches. An employee sweeping floor behind counter where sandwiches being made stirring up floor dirt and trash; they are oblivious to ‘clean food preparation area’. THIS IS NOT THE OLD GIUGNI’S; the new owners and employees, after multiple visits since they bought the place, Just do not care….23 dollars for a sandwich inedible and rude, detached and lost owners and employees. Not going back. Nor will my fellow coworkers in the area. We have all had similar experiences. GIUGNI’S may be the name on the sign, but this place is not what we know…..this is about how little we can work, how much we can charge and an attitude WE DON’T CARE IF YOU COME BACK OR NOT….plenty of other options, so your wish is granted……and since I’ve been going to GIUGNI’S for over twenty years…..sad but I feel free of awful atmosphere attitudes and stale sandwiches. The rating is really ZERO.

Google
My profile picture is a Giugni's deli sandwich, which instantly brings back nostalgic memories. Giugni's holds a special place in my heart as I've been visiting every summer for the past 20 years, and each visit has been an absolute delight. However, discovering my gluten sensitivity was heartbreaking because it meant I couldn't enjoy their sandwiches anymore. Thankfully, my excitement was reignited when I learned they offered gluten-free bread, even though it's not as good as the originals. Despite the slight change in aura, possibly due to COVID, walking through that wooden back door, seeing the display of meats and cheese, and being surrounded by snacks and drinks still feels so great. If you happen to be in the area, I highly recommend swinging by Giugni's to grab a sub and experience the nostalgia for yourself!

Google
One of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. All the ingredients were fresh, and service was fast and friendly.

Chris Lytle

Google
Great sandwich! My wife and I split a sandwich to go. They're very big with tons of meat and cheese options. Must get their special sauce which is kind of like a herby, tangy Italian vinaigrette. Suggest getting sprouts to soak it up.

Yelp
A great local spot with some delicious sandwiches! I was recommended this place by a coworker that used to live in the area and it did not disappoint. My group and I ordered ahead for pickup and when we arrived we were able to grab them right away. There is a wide selection of options (meat, bread, cheese, accessories, etc) which I absolutely loved. I ordered the cajun turkey with cheese on the rosemary focaccia and it was delicious! Definitely recommend if you find yourself craving a yummy sandwich in the area.

Yelp
If you're in downtown I'd suggest stopping at the Orin Swift Tasting room and then walking down the block for a sandwich from this place. These are FAT sandwiches, they come with micro greens and the works and you can add a bunch of other things for additional charges. The service is a deli line and it moves as quick as whoever is ordering in front of you. The people are nice and you have plenty of customization options. There are seats inside and a bunch of old decor that has obviously been collected over the years. Great, reasonably priced spot downtown!

Yelp
Awesome sandwich shop within the cute grocery store on the Main Street that we stopped into for a quick lunch after a wine tasting. Absolutely love the service where you can choose your meat and cheese and they're sliced and cut right in front of you. Ended up getting a Mortadella and sharp cheddar on Dutch crunch and a Pastrami and smoked Gouda on a seeded bun - both with the works. 100 percent would stop again.
google avatar

Cindy T.

Yelp
The sandwich was DELICIOUS. It's like Subway where you build your sandwich, but Jersey Mikes' Mike's way but with oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, and also sprouts. They even let you choose two types of meat as your meat option. I got half turkey half roast beef on a soft sourdough. Workers were very nice and the shop was a cool retro deli shop! Definitely want to come back when I'm in Napa Valley again.

Ryan B.

Yelp
This place is legendary and is a big part of my childhood, growing up in St. Helena. Love that it looks the same and the sandwiches are still great. Fresh bread and sliced to order meats and cheeses. Mortadella/Provolone on Sweet French with the works and Giugni Juice is my go to favorite. Word of advice, get the Giugni Juice ON THE SIDE if you are ordering your sandwich to go, otherwise it will be a soggy mess when you finally go to eat it.

Yelp
We arrived pretty early before they closed as I understand people want to go home on time but the service was terrible. We weren't greeted as we walked in and since this was our first time here we weren't sure how it worked. We were given "directions" to how it worked but they mumbled and never gave eye contact. They also don't toast sandwiches here which I was surprised by. I also had to ask if they could microwave my deli meat as i'm pregnant and unable to have it without being cooked and they seemed so put out by this. The inside was really pretty and the sandwich was an overall 8/10 but the service makes it go down to a 4/10.

Jessica G.

Yelp
I like thinking about the history of this place, and the space has a busy, funky vibe. The sandwiches are good. The Guigni juice is great - it's a must for all sandwiches ordered here. I really enjoyed the tuna salad with the hard sourdough roll. Only a couple tables to sit inside, so maybe better for a picnic?
google avatar

Yelp
We had initially planned to go to another sandwich spot and after that didn't work out, lucked into this one. Their sandwiches are outstanding, starting with the bread. The bread is divine. Just the right amount chewy and soft with a great bread-to-filling ratio. Their dutch crutch was incredible. Service was good. Interior is plain but you come here for the sandwiches. Sprouts are always a plus in my book!
google avatar

Yelp
Great value sandwiches with lots of options. We appreciated the hundreds of mix and match options, and the online ordering process was very easy. There were a wide variety of meat options, from standard turkey and chicken cold cuts to salamis, prosciutto, honey glazed ham, etc The sandwiches have a lot of meat and cheese which is nice, and they tasted delicious. They have one vegetarian option and egg salad which makes it easy to stop here and find something for everyone even if they don't like cold cuts. We would come back for a quick and easy lunch stop.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Such a good sandwich shop! The hours on yelp are different than the store front, so glad we took a chance and stopped by. I got a vegetarian sandwich with crunchy Dutch bread and cheese. You have to get the Giugni juice on your sandwich cause that's what makes it. They also had lots of chips and a few table options to sit down. I'm not in this area often but will def come back if I am!
google avatar

Wesley H.

Yelp
These had to be the best sandwiches in all of Napa valley. Just don't expect to sit and eat there on the regular. The back seating area really needs an update.
google avatar

Samir K.

Yelp
Saw this place on Eater's best food of Napa Valley, and since my wife and I both love Italian delis, we made sure to stop by. We ordered ahead, which didn't seem that necessary because the line was short, but the option is nice to have. I had the Italian Combo (of course) with Giugni juice and pepperoncini. It was really good, packed with meat and cheese, but I think I should have left off the pepperoncini, because the juice itself has some vinegar in it and it ended a little sour. My wife had the avocado cucumber and she had a similar criticism. However, the whole place was great, and I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area!
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
They don't need more good reviews, everyone knows this is THE PLACE. But they deserve more so here we go! Quality sandos for years, fresh ingredients, amazing cheese selection (the high quality cheese on your sando makes allll the difference). Staff is always super friendly and take home some of their Giugni sauce/dressing/marinade. Seriously we use this on everything. There's a reason this place has been here for years. Go, wait in the line if there is one, get a sando, you will never regret it.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Giugni's is definitely a stop to experience nostalgia rather than chasing after the same taste as before. This particular visit was disappointing because they were missing the rosemary bread that I've always loved in the past. Instead I ordered the dutch crunch but it was pretty mediocre, I almost wish I had just ordered the wheat or plain bread instead. It's definitely one of those stops where you'll regret if you don't stop by but also know it will be disappointing if it doesn't meet the expectations you've built up from the past.
google avatar

Kelli D.

Yelp
Not an Italian Deli. Service was mediocre even though they were nice. Bread was good but something was way over salted and my husband and I were chugging water the rest of the day. Super disappointed. Won't be back.
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
Great subs served in a fabulous city. We are in love with this sweet lil town. I want to live here.
google avatar

Marybeth B.

Yelp
Excellently run deli in a kitschy store. There is even a candy counter! Fresh deli meats, cheeses, tomatoes, sprouts, homemade breads. Nice staff!
google avatar

Ruby Q.

Yelp
Nice sandwich shop. It's expensive like everything else in wine country. Limited seating options with two 4-topper tables.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
While visiting Napa Valley, my partner and I were looking for a quick spot to get some lunch in between our tastings. After doing some research on yelp we decided to try this little shop on the main road. We both wanted to try their sandwiches which were solid overall and I do recommend getting the dutch crunch bread. Protips: order online before heading in! This saved me a lot of time as there was a long line in the store. To my understanding, there is no designated parking there so I had to find street parking near the store. Overall very solid sandwich place.
google avatar

Nolan S.

Yelp
best sandwiches ever i love gunis so good get the junie juice nicest people ever so pretty very cool posters wall has old posters and stuff
google avatar

Christina J.

Yelp
Really good sandwich spot The turkey on Dutch crunch was solid Protip: Good place to go after visiting Benessere winery
google avatar

Karina P.

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch pick up in between wine tastings and loved it! We ordered 8 sandwiches to go so they had lots of opportunities to mess up an order...nope! They got every order perfectly!! I would highly recommend this place for sandwiches if you are in the area. My favorite is the cajun turkey but I have also heard good things about a bunch of other things on the menu so I don't think you can go wrong. Make sure to get that giugni sauce on your sandwich too..it is killer! Garlic, herbs, olive oil, red wine vinegar, and a whole lot of love goes into that sauce. I could drink it!
google avatar

Isabella L.

Yelp
*a review during the COVID-19 pandemic* Finally back years later after going wine tasting for the first time since pre-pandemic. The sandwiches are still delicious and I'm still thinking of the Giugni juice the next day. Right now they pick-up only and you place your order via online or telephone. They are accepting credit cards unlike before when they were cash only. My family placed our order around 9 for a 12:30 pick up and they were ready when we got there. I still recommend this place if you're in the area and it's a great meal between wine tastings!
google avatar

Isabelle N.

Yelp
I was so excited to try the sandwiches here based on the reviews but to be honest I really wasn't all that impressed. I got the Dutch crunch bread based on everyone's review, it was kind of dry and not great, would have preferred something else. For $14 I just wasn't all that impressed. Probably wouldn't come here again or maybe just try something different next time.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Cute deli right in the middle of the downtown strip. The only negative to this place is that there are too many choices to make a sandwich from. They might be better served with more premade sandwich creations to choose from to help the out of towners speed up their ordering process. I'm just glad we made it into this spot as opposed to some of the other places we had been considering. Next time we're in Napa, we will definitely return for another sandwich or two.
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Giugni's for the first time on a vacation to Napa with my brother and his girlfriend. They had been raving about it since the last time they had gone to Napa together. After reviewing all the possible cheese and meat combinations, I decided to ask the woman behind the counter what she'd go with, and she recommended the pastrami, which is one of my favorite deli meats. I ended up getting the pastrami with a smoked Swiss on the dutch crunch with everything on it. Wow, what a sandwich. I might just come back to Napa for Giugni's lol. My brother got the Italian and his girlfriend got a spicy salami, I think. All of them were so good though, I can't see how you could go wrong with any of the options! I highly recommend Giugni's to anyone in the Napa area!
google avatar

Nicol M.

Yelp
So very disappointed. I used to love coming here. No rosemary bread. No toasting of bread. Pickles are changed and garlicky. When we ask for extra mayo, it means slather. It is not your sandwich, it's mine. If you are charging 20$ for a sandwich it should look like it.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
My sandwich was soggy, and missing my add-on avocado ($2). My $8 sandwich from whole foods in SF was better than this $14 sandwich. If you decide to eat here, walk your sandwich to the nearby park with picnic tables just a few minutes away by walking. This place definitely suffers from tourist inflation. I don't see how this place could be even close to 5 stars. We ordered an hour ahead and our sandwich was ready at the requested time. Upon opening it up, it was clear they made it well before my requested time and sitting for over 45 mins. The bread was soggy, flattened and there wasn't any residual heat from the toasting. The quantity of meat was acceptable for a $12 base price sandwich. The flavor was good, but the cold, soggy bread ruined my experience. To top it all off, they forgot to add avocado in one of our two sandwiches.
google avatar

Kimber L.

Yelp
Vegetarian & Turkey with Dill Havarti are the best. Love the horseradish! Don't skip the Giugni Juice for the best sandwich. The line moves quickly.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
I don't care what the history is...and yes I started coming here in the early 1990's. Hadn't been here in 4-5 years, so figured on my way thru I would order up 2 sandwiches. Yes 2, Sandwiches. No Drinks, No Chips, simple 2 sandwiches. $47 Without a tip. I am sorry this isn't even in the realm of a reasonable value anymore. Your #$%^ just isn't that good. These were not gourmet sandwiches. #1- French Role, Turkey, Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Pepperoncini, mayo, mustard, g-juice. #2 - French Role, Ham, Salami, Mortadella, Mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, cucumber, onion, pickle's, mayo, mustard, g-juice. And that is $47 worth of Sandwiches. To be honest couldn't tell if they were that bad, or just the bad taste of the price. $30 Ok, its the Napa Valley. $47 and your just milking the history of what used to be a reasonable place that locals could enjoy. Just another gem turned tourist trap.
google avatar

Chaeli W.

Yelp
The flavors and freshness are out of this world. We ordered sandwiches before heading out to a few wineries so the ingredients had time to marinate. I don't think I even chewed it was so good, just inhaled. Will definitely be my go to spot when in wine country.
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
Excellent spot for a delicious sandwich. They have a large selection of meats and cheeses available for fresh slicing along with multiple types of breads to allow for ultimate customization. The sandys are pretty big and for the quality are a very good price. Great place to carbo load prior to slamming vino.
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
Can't complain about a local, family-run deli. As you can see in this picture, sando sizes are not small. They don't skimp on anything, and they'll make your sando to order. They have a host of chips and drinks to go with that sandwich. Love the customer service here and the no-frills focus on sandwiches. Will be back when I'm in town again!
google avatar

Allan L.

Yelp
Not much of a sandwich person but this place pretty good and their venigar oil mix is awesome......
google avatar

Victor W.

Yelp
Solid. Wait was long but the flavors were so on point. People are lining up just to get a sandwich so I had to see what the hype was about. Bread was fresh, cheese was sharp, and the meat was quality. It was a good experience but sandwich was on the pricier side. Has a ton of options to choose from.
google avatar

Paddy O.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Vintage candy and great sandwiches. Bread is also outstanding.
google avatar

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and always need a bottle of that Giugni juice for home! Great variety of options as well.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
Simply delicious! I ordered a peppered Turkey and havarti on hard sour the giugni way... the horseradish had me a little skeptical but figured why not give it a go... the creaminess of the havarti with the bite of the horseradish was something I'll be dreaming of. Unfortunately one of the sandwiches in our order didn't make it in the bag -- I recommend counting before you leave the shop! Luckily they are big enough to share in the unfortunate event this happens to you!
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
You know, I'm kinda shocked but I wasn't in love with this place! I thought I would be. It has all the makings of a dreamy spot... candy in the window, dutch crunch bread, alfalfa sprouts. But no! I did not feel the love. The roast beef was kind of flavorless and lathered in horseradish, and the dutch bread wasn't as fresh as I'd hoped.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Best place to get a sandwich on planet earth. I have a bottle of Juice on my desk at work since I live 2 hours away.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
The best freaking sandwich I have ever tasted. The special sauce is delicious. Order ahead and skip the wait line
google avatar

Brandi H.

Yelp
Best sandwich ever! Got the turkey on Sour Roll .. which was perfect, soft and thin (not a huge overwhelming roll). Turkey and avocado were fresh and staff was friendly. Ordered Online and it was served faster than estimated time *bonus. Thank you!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
St. Helena and the surrounding area have plenty of cutesy little eateries, but you can look no further than Giugni W F & Son for all your deli delights. It's hard to describe what makes a deli sandwich amazing when there are so many options out there. Just know that here they have some of the best, and the glowing reviews are anything but hype. We were celebrating a day in wine country and in need of a good classic lunch. We were immediately struck by the old storefront and decided to stop in. my resulting tuna sandwich (and her turkey and salami sandwich) were absolutely fantastic - fresh ingredients, even fresher bread. SImple but delicious. I loved that just there basic "works" toppings included horseradish for that extra kick. And if you're not a fan of horseradish, well, you're just missing out. We came during a time when strict COVID-19 regulations were being enforced. Our minds were set at ease by their easy to read signage requiring masks and one person in the store at a time to place an order. We didn't get to see the full interior because of the restrictions, but it's a lovely shop with plenty of history on the walls and a classic deli feel.
google avatar

Henry T.

Yelp
Visited during the pandemic and they had takeout orders available if you order online. Nothing new to add to the other great reviews. Sandwiches are on point and we bought four bottles of the Giugni juice to take home. They wrapped them up nicely for us. Coming back when we visit Napa again.
google avatar

Sydney H.

Yelp
The best god damn sandwich I've ever had in my life. I ate my first Giugni's sandwich when I was probably 12 years old, and I've had probably 500 since then. The sprouts, the Giugni juice?!?? Are you kidding. It's flawless. Impeccable. Worth the wait if there's a line. A local spot that has never changed, and I hope it never does!
google avatar

Vic F.

Yelp
Solid sandwich with quality fixin's. We got a mortadella with the usual veggies, mayo and their signature Guigni sauce. The meat was piled high and the star of the show, I did taste their signature sauce but it seemed to need quite a bit more. Maybe next time I'll skip the mayo and go sauce only. The online order is efficient, don't try to pick up up earlier than noted, there seems to be a semi-time/sandwich nazi in their midst. Other than that you'll be OK.
google avatar

Colleen L.

Yelp
We called in an order a day ahead of time for easy pickup. The order was prepared on time and correctly. Everything was exactly as asked. One word of advice...experiment. Don't get the turkey and swiss with mayo. They have many wonderful choices. The Giugni sauce added a nice twang to the sandwiches. They offer many choices of meat, cheese, bread, and extras. The dutch crunch bread was amazing.
google avatar

Karin N.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches but man, one employee is so incredibly slow that she literally held up the entire line. Besides that, I'd definitely come back!
google avatar

Angie A.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Great meat and cheese selections for individual sandwiches. I would come back as everything was fresh and delicious.
