This was a second stay at Aloft NYC downtown. Let's get the some basics out of the way first. The rooms are tiny, even by NYC hotel room standards. Aloft rooms are generally on the small size, NYC hotel rooms are notoriously small, so if multiply both, carry the one, and divide by two, you get a walk-in closet size room, that requires going into the hall to change your mind. Okay, maybe not that bad, but prepare yourself, and don't bring a lot luggage, or extra friends.
Second, the area looks sketchy. Especially at night. We are and lived in NYC, so the city doesn't spook us. We are not some family from Ohio coming to the big city the first time. This area of town looks sketchy. The good news - looks are deceiving. The area itself isn't bad, and there are enough businesses open, even after this part of the city clears out, even late at night and 24 hours, where you won't feel like you are the only human in an abandoned wasteland.
The hotel itself does what needs to be done. A good bed at a good price. Service is accomodating. The brand targets a mid-20's - mid-30's demographic so the design is relevant to its customers. This is a no frills stay. And even though most guests skew younger, we didn't feel out of place, and we certainly weren't the intended audience.
The location is excellent. Blocks several subway lines (and the Staten Island Ferry) which take you to just about anywhere in Manhattan or the outer boroughs.(with an express train you can be on the upper west or east side in 15-20 minutes) Easy walk to downtown shopping, the World Trade Center site, Wall Street, City Hall, Courts, ChinaTown, Battery Park. You are steps away from the Brooklyn Bridge.
IF you happen to drive, parking is available through an agreement with the garage next door. Daily rate with the hotel discount which is incredible by NYC standards, and a lot of other popular cities as well.
If you are looking for a Plaza Hotel experience, and a mid-town vibe, this isn't the place. However, if you want decent room, at a decent rate, it's worth it.
is dog friendly so if you bring your fur baby is a couple parks near by but remember to be responsible and pick up after your pooch.
one of my favorite things is the deli around the corner for anything you need.
