My fiancé and I went to WakeMed Raleigh expecting clarity and care. What we got instead was fear, confusion, and an experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. A provider gave us — with complete confidence — a cancer diagnosis. No biopsy, no full imaging, no confirmation. Just… “it’s cancer.” That moment shattered us. It triggered unnecessary testing, an overnight stay, and emotional damage that we’re still recovering from. The following day, a different doctor was confused as to why we were still there because it didn’t look like cancer. I understand that medicine involves uncertainty — but what happened here wasn’t about uncertainty. It was about recklessness, poor communication, and a total lack of compassion. We’re now stuck with that trauma and bills for a situation that didn’t have to go this way. This experience shook our trust in WakeMed, and it’s not something we’ll ever forget.

My labor and delivery nurses, doctor were all amazing. Everyone showed up and you could tell that they all are happy about what they do. Everyone seemed like they actually want to be at work doing something they enjoy. They’re helpful and informative, you meet your nurse during every shift change. It’s nothing less or amazing to deliver a baby here!

I was hospitalized in the WakeMed neurosurgery department. What can I say, it was my very first experience in the hospital (I'm 57). I've been granted as much freedom as possible: wear my clothes, walk around, remotely work. Very friendly, carying, attentive and professional staff. Under such circumstances, it was as normal as possible for me.

I recently had a cardiac CT scan. The nurse, that works alone in there was excellent!! THANK YOU! Wake Med has been our only choice of hospital since moving here in 2009. ALL staff we have dealt with have been the best. My husband and I both have been hospitalized several times on different units including Cardiac ICU. Where ever we were we received the best of care, from ALL staff; doctors, nurses, dietary, office workers, all of them!!! WakeMed will remain our first choice hospital....Thank you all for all you do!

My mother had spinal surgery today. The surgeon was amazing. We called him Dr. B. The best thing we experienced was in post-op. The care, positive and patient our nurse was amazing! Her first name is Shannon. She made my mom’s experience straight out of surgery feel very comfortable. Big thanks to Shannon from post-op!

I just had surgery at WakeMed Raleigh and everything about this hospital is top notch. From the facility to all levels of staff, they made me feel very comfortable and at ease. Everyone had a great attitude and genuinely seemed like they were happy to be working there. If you're having a procedure that will require multiple days at the hospital, I definitely recommend staying at the Heart Center Inn located inside the hospital. It is reasonably priced and very convenient.

My son Tre and his family were involved in a head on collision on 4/20/25(Easter Sunday). My son and daughter in law were airlifted there. My son had severe trauma. He was all broken up. With his injuries, it was a miracle (God’s grace and mercy) that he survived. The whole staff, doctors and nurses, did such an amazing job with my son and daughter. The nurses in ICU had a calming way of explaining everything to me so that it was understandable. They went above and beyond their duties for my child. I’ll forever be grateful for the doctors and nurses at WakeMed. They saved my son’s life! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ FYI….my family is doing AMAZING!!

Yelp
monday 21, I stayed with my father for 13 hours for shortness of breath took his blood work at 10 then at 435 said it had clotted and had to retake it. I have Never seen the things I saw that day went to restroom a lady was standing naked , lady laying in the floor screaming in pain ,then my dad went to mens' restroom a man was on counter sitting talking on the phone. People leaving coming back with food like you would have on a picnic, the crumbs and some paper were pushed under the chairs. come out in this waiting room took an ultrasound of someones foot. I realize the puplic has changed however for the ones of us that cannot understand how this could happen in an emergency waiting room have a problem. need to have and enforce some type of rules security did tell some man don't go out and in again this was after several times, the man back talked the officer. we will never go back unless on rescue squad

Yelp
Good early morning, I've decided to take time (4:30AM)to give the Board of Directors a word of advice. Please invest in more comfortable bed, and never offer a new guest a transporting bed used for surgery. I came into Wake Med visiting in town from Charlotte . My ER Doctor, and nurses are AMAZING! I initially wrote a comment that was not so pleasant. In about 24 hours that has changed tremendously I have encountered some of the most nicest professional authentic hospital staff I've eve met. I work in Corporate America and i encounter hundreds of " faking it until we make it". Wake Med has a staff of authenticity nice Doctors and Nurses: A list of exceptional staff: RN Dharna, RN David, RN Rachel , Nursing Assistant Nancy, RN Amy, Nursing Assistant Michelle. The " Entire " culinary staff it's hard feeding vegan patients, Thank you all!

Yelp
The bathrooms were dirty. Toilets had feces , I came to this hospital for a clogged catheter was her from 11-5pm. Truly disappointed. The nurses were second guessing on how to change the catheter. I hope I never have to come here again

Yelp
If I could give this hospital a ZERO, I would. My grandmother transferred here from WakeMed North after a month of them lying to me by stating she had BONE CANCER when she didn't. I wouldn't let them discharge her because they couldn't prove she had it. They just wanted to discharge her on hospice and give someone else her bed. As her POA, I fought them. I have never had to fight so hard for anything in my life. They sent her to the main hospital when they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. They mistreated her here. They restrained her because they were short-staffed & she was a fall risk. They tied her to the bed & left her there for long periods of time. They wouldn't allow her to go to the restroom & forced her to use it on herself. This is someone who was independent and was now tied to a bed for most of the day. I fought this hospital with everything I had - BOTH locations. They tried to discharge her to a rehab before finding out what was wrong with her AND before doing the test I requested that would provide whether or not she had Cancer. I would not allow the discharge & she couldn't make that decision herself. So, we kept playing their game until they finally gave in. Finally, after 2 months, they did the test I requested and, GUESS WHAT, she didn't have Cancer AT ALL!! They misdiagnosed her and was going to throw her away on hospice for nothing. Dealing with them was extremely exhausting, but I don't regret fighting for her. I'd do it again over and over again. Both locations have horrible nurses who'd rather sit around gossiping in the hallway than to be helping those who need their care. I even heard a group of nurses mocking some Hispanic patients that they had and laughing about how they were moaning in pain and that they couldn't understand them. I told the charge nurse. Of course nothing happened. Please beware!! Don't let these people misdiagnose you or your family. FIGHT & don't believe what they say as the gospel. They lie & they don't care about the elderly. From the doctors to the nurses to the social workers...they ALL need new careers away from people because they don't have common decency and lack the emotional intelligence to take care of others!!!

Yelp
I gave birth at the Wake Med - Raleigh campus about 2 months ago and could not be happier with the care and service I received. This review is specifically for the birth experience - not the ER or any other departments. I was going back and forth between four and five stars. Four, because two of the nurses we had could have utilized a bit more bedside manner; I will get to that. However, I believe that two nurses that didn't meet expectations by far, for most of their time with me, shouldn't take away from the rest of the experience. I will try and make a long birth story, short. We were sent in for an induction a week before my scheduled an induction due to slightly elevated blood pressure. We arrived around 7pm and checked in. First things first - the L&D unit is amazing. Clean, spacious, comfortable. The plan was to have a natural birth so we started with the induction process that evening. My doctors from my OB clinic were there, and great as always. Two nurses that we had were hot and cold, and when the plan for my birth (not a "birth plan," but what the doctor's plan was), changed almost 24 hours later, these two nurses were sometimes kind, and sometimes rude. For example, telling me in a very rude way (my doula and husband saw this too), that I would not progress if I did not sit a certain way in the bed with the peanut ball. First of all, girl I ain't progressing with a ball at that point. Foley balloon, a LOT of Pitocin, and 24 hours later - just not happening. I understand the goal is to NOT have a c-section if possible, but my body just was not having it! They did not like the fact that I was anxious; I was upset - exhausted, on drugs. Long story short, don't be a nurse if you cannot handle anxiety in L&D patients when things get a bit off plan - it is a very vulnerable time for women. Find another career. That all being said, 24 hours after all of this, my OB (she's amazing, Kamm McKenzie OBGYN), brought up the c-section. This was a hard pill to swallow, as this was my original plan and was changed a few times. Either way, waiting for full labor to happen and pushing; my body just wasn't having it. Everything started moving really fast at that point. I got ready and my husband did as well. They took me to the OR and I got prepped, from what I remember. My OB, the surgical technicians = AMAZING. Yes, it was a bit traumatic since I had gone through all of that first, and wasn't exactly all there, but I was okay, healthy, and my baby girl was perfect. The c-section was flawless. Finally moving on to the postpartum unit and that nurse experience. I cannot speak more highly of these people. Every single one of them, the lactation consultants, and doctors were absolutely amazing. Patient, kind, knowledgeable, supportive, etc. I couldn't have asked for a better recovery experience. They took exceptional care of me and my sweet baby girl. I felt comforted, safe, and as relaxed as one could be in that situation and atmosphere. They knew exactly what they were doing. Yes, they come in at ALL hours to check on us but that's how it works, and I'm glad they did! Even the cafeteria staff that delivered the (actually YUMMY) food was so kind. When we were finally ready to be discharged, the nurses were so helpful, made sure we had everything we needed then and going forward, and answered all of our questions. We also had a lovely carseat guru come to assist: she was so amazing and helped us down to the car with all of our luggage! I absolutely recommended Wake Med for a stellar birth experience! Definitely advocate for yourself at all times, and speak up too. This is YOUR journey as a mama and new parents.

Yelp
I went to the ER and I'm 35 weeks pregnan! they didn't do anything but told me I'm fine. they did a few testing and I never got my results back. I don't recommend this hospital to anyone. it was a lot of people in the lobby and they take hours to bring you back to the hospital. its smell nasty and nurses don't even care

Yelp
Do not go to this ER they are terrible We have set in the ER for 12 hours in a hard chair after being told they will have a bed my son is in a chair getting depression from lack of care and he came for help. Just go to any urgent care but do not come here as you will be abused and threatened and treated like a criminal for asking for help.

Yelp
Would like to give a glowing review to the staff and most of all, the two amazing nurses who helped me get through a testing I was so afraid of doing. So kind, caring, fun and made me fell I was capable of doing anything and I did. By the way, all is GOOD!!! Thank you so much nurses Leanna Keith and Ruth Wegelin in heart and vascular physicians @heart center testing. You made me fell like superwoman!! Love to you all and again, thanks so much for your care.

matthew f.

Yelp
Took my dad here and after 9 hours of waiting and multiple tests was basically told we don't. Know whats wrong. Just save your money and time and go to an urgent care. Front desk lady's were pretty nice up until shift change or whatever around 0200 when the main one calling peoples names up seemed really passive aggressive towards every patient

Yelp
HELL is how I would politely describe this place. Then what comes to mind is DECEPTION, ABUSE of Federally Controlled Substances, and INCOMPETENCE. This "hospital" needs to be INVESTIGATED inside and out by the DEA, the North Carolina Medical Board, Attorney General, etc. They prey on people like hyenas by starving them and then drugging them into submission for unwanted and medically unnecessary, invasive and dangerous procedures. This is how they do it: 1. You are fully alert, independent and mobile yet you are placed in an "ICU" room (Intensive Care Unit) 2. Benzodiazepines like Lorazepam are secretly added to your IV - you will not know they are doing this. They won't tell you or your family. 3. You start showing side effects like respiratory suppression that gets worse with time as they are increasing dosage, and drowsiness, fear and loosing your mind not understanding what is going on. 4. They will call your family and tell them how badly you are doing and how they have to intubate you to "Save Your Life". No mention that they have been pumping you with benzodiazepines. They gave me 3 different flavors of benzodiazepines when they did this to me. One of the cash cows here is intubation and mechanical ventilation and if that doesn't kill you right away, they can keep you there for many weeks "recovering" while they are heavily billing insurance companies for intensive care under full anesthesia so that you will hae no say. This theater works really well on people with any pneumonia, general lung problems, alcoholics, and people they claim that need to be "controlled" just like in a Psych Ward. Ventilators are extremely dangerous and if set just slightly wrong can damage your lungs and kill you. If you are at WakeMed reading this, I would call your family to pick you up ASAP no matter what you are there for. There are much better and safer hospitals around Raleigh area and you will be pleasantly surprised on how much nicer the nurses and doctors are elsewhere. Sincerely, ex-victim

Yelp
BEWARE! Do not go to this hospital! My sister has been sitting there in pain and possibly septic for 10 hours and hasn't been pulled back in a room. On top of that there is a woman at the front desk being extremely rude. I will be filling a formal complaint with the state.

Lauren W.

Yelp
I have gone here for almost 10 years to the North Raleigh location, and the front desk staff has been consistently incompetent, especially over the phone. Nothing is ever simple with them. I would suggest a practice that hires quality staff.

Yelp
I delivered my son at WakeMed and could not have been happier with my experience. There is a police officer and employee manning the front entrance in the middle of the night and when I walked out of the car and said I was in labor the employee quickly grabbed a wheelchair, I checked-in at the front desk, and we were off! I was worried about having to check-in through the emergency department but it was super easy. They even have a short term lot you can use, although when my husband went to the car to grab something they made him move the car while I was in labor. Angela was my labor and delivery nurse and she was amazing, she was everything you'd want in a nurse while you are in labor. After delivery the postpartum nurses were amazing. Someone was always there when you needed them, no matter the hour. Surprisingly they have one male postpartum nurse, Chris, and he was one of my favorites. Super caring and helpful during stressful new baby situations. The pediatrician doing rounds Dr Nassif was also great to work with. They have new partner beds in some of the recovery rooms since they were getting so many complaints. It's basically a chair that pulls out into a twin sized bed. The nurses don't tell you this so you just have to figure it out on your own. Unfortunately one of my friends did not figure this out and her husband ended up on the floor! However if you bring your own blankets and pillow my husband reported the bed to be quite comfortable. I also figured he felt that way due to all the sleeping I watched him do while I was up with the babe. ;) He also enjoyed the rainfall shower in the bathroom. The nurses and I joked that he was enjoying his stay at Hotel WakeMed. I was originally happy to deliver at WakeMed (Big WakeMed) since they have one of the lowest C-Section rates in the country. They also have the top NICU in the area and if any complications were to arise I liked being able to be at the same hospital as my baby. I was very fortunate that neither situation came up, but those stats originally put me at ease. My only feedback would be to ask which insurance the baby will be under (I didn't remember to bring this up in my new baby haze). My son is under my husband's insurance, not mine which was automatically billed for him. It has been countless phone calls back and forth now trying to get the bill sorted out.

Yelp
Daughter was transported here via ambulance from the Falls location (don't expect surgery there!). This location is older and it shows. I arrived at 3 am, worse for wear, and the security guard at the front door treated me like I was a criminal, not a tired, very worried mom. The registration gentleman was grouchy and told me to wait 15-20 minutes for my daughter to be admitted. I decided to run to ladies room before she arrived and I immediately noticed what appeared to be numerous people in the lobby covered in blankets, it was very different than the Falls of Neuse waiting area. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long and got to see my daughter quickly. Be forewarned, this hospital is very large and a resident who tried to help me find the A/B wing got lost herself! The ER nurses were brusque, the ER surgeons were very friendly and explained everything to us very clearly. Appendectomy would be happening immediately! My daughter went into surgery and the pre-op nurse was fantastic. Her name was Clairice and was kind and put as at ease. I went down to the Au Bon Pain cafe in the hospital and grabbed a delicious salad to eat at 5 am. Yep, 5 am. Critical care waiting area was nice and the screen shows what stage your loved one is in the surgery queue, it was great to follow along that my daughter was "in surgery", "all done!", and "waking up". If we have any future emergency events, we know to come here if it might require surgery.

WatkinsM919 ..

Yelp
Wakemed isnt the worst but it's up there, long wait time to see a nurse or quack, I mean doc. Waiting room always got CNN on. Some redheaded nurse told me I looked like shit was the first thing that came out her mouth LITERALLY. And if you think they gonna do anything about your pain, or give you a prescription that you need you can forget that.

D D.

Yelp
Nurses ridiculing patients who are on their deathbed was our experience. Nurses "too busy" and complaining when call button is used. Inappropriate "secret" conversations with young adult children (19 year old) demanding the child do something to get parent into hospice, when it was not the child's decision to make. This caused great trauma to the family.

Cindy M.

Yelp
Went for MRI today and found this to be an filthy hospital. Parking deck stairwell was disgusting and didn't have cameras. I will not deliver my baby in such conditions.

Yelp
I was so excited when I was called for the job at wake med . One of the best, well known hospitals. Top 10 nationally . The only reason why I took the job was because we were on the verge of becoming homeless and without a job I could not purchase my house . I have years of experience and I was offered basically the same amount as a McDonald's worker . Over a billion dollar company , you can look them up . I refused the job at first but had no other option or I couldn't get my house and me and my huge family needed this . They literally work you like a dog . They don't care about you or your family . It's is extremely racially segregated which is disgusting to me ! I never thought I would bear witness to something like that in my lifetime . I work full time plus overtime and still struggle immensely. I had to go on social services ! You are not allowed to call out ! If you are not laying up the hospital dying then they penalise you for calling out . The micro managing is disgusting . It's a revolving door . No one stays , no one ! I have never seen people come and go in any place like they do at wake med . The treat you like garbage . I suggest whatever you do steer clear of employment from this place . On top of that it is worse than Highschool .

Yelp
We are going on six hours. He needed 5 minutes of tests. Lovely caring staff but if you can avoid the trip, wait until you can get in with your regular doc!

Best transplant team. Been a year since pancreas transplant and couldn't be happier with the team along my journey

Yelp
not good with patients , shows favoritism, racism very unprofessional i sat out in the lobby for 3 hrs was told my condition wasn't important enough

Yelp
Worst ER EVER! Incompetent, disgustingly dirty and made us wait for 3 hours before being seen. Never again! Shame on you WakeMed ER! Shame on you!

Yelp
This is one of the worse hospitals and clinics I have ever seen, especially over at Cary, NC. Starting with Cary Wake Med Hospital, on an admission a PA Stacy McDonald discharged, deleted all my critical medication and noted in the record stop these medications. I have A-Fib, Aorta Aneurysm, COPD, 2 Total Knee Replacement, Spinal surgery, serious back problems and the medications this PA deleted and told me to stop were breathing meds, heart meds, HBP meds, I went with heart medications almost 2 weeks, because she deleted everything, even called a pharmacy and told them to delete my heart meds. NCMB is still handling this. Then right across the street was my Cardiologist, I had an Echo Scheduled and get a call from a Teresa stating it has to be rescheduled, provider will be out of the office that day. Then I recently had a new Primary Care appointment, on the morning of September 13, 2023, the same day my appointment was scheduled and not I have to drive 70 miles, they call and cancelled that appointment, saying the provider called in today sick and she went on to say the provider is pregnant also. Isn't that a violation of Privacy Act? Then after waiting 11 months to see a specialist at Duke, Duke tells me to follow up with regular Pulmonary Provider, Dr. Maani, Duke recommended some lab work and nearly a month, Pulmonary has not scheduled any lab. Now if anyone has gone to Duke to the clinics, you will recall you could park in the Parking Garage on the level where you appointment was and enter the main clinic right there. Well it is not like that now, no matter where you park, got to walk to the elevator close to the street outside, take the elevator down to the first floor, get off, walk forever to the entrance of the clinic's main lobby. I was so short of breathe, contacted my Pulmonologist was certified 7 years for Mobility Scooter which broke down, Medicare told me I am eligible every 5 years, all I have to do is get a new prescription with the diagnosis on them. Get a hassle from Dr. Maani and his staff, they said I have to make a appointment and come in and be certified but Medicare has records on file for 35 years I am rated 100% Disable and their records reflect my conditions have worsen and they agree I should not have to go through all this red tape, just to get a Mobility Scooter and many are saying Wake Med is only dong this to make more money off of a patients insurance. That is fine, will sit at home and die before asking Wake Med for anything. Another thing, a well known physician stated, after I showed him my prescription a provider like Dr. Maani shouldn't be giving patients 5 refills on Prednisone, 10 mg. dosage pack. Prednisone is a good medications but has some very serious side effects. Bottom line Wake Med is not a place you want to take your loved ones for treatment. Will update and add pictures where that PA McDonald stopped and deleted all my critical medications by in the morning.

Yelp
On September 2, 2022, Dr. Amantia Kennedy performed my yearly routine Pap smear. Dr. Amantia Kennedy was very rough so rough that I backed away and the device pulled out. Dr. Kennedy said she saw a polyp that needed to be removed so I let her. After removing the polyp, Dr. Kennedy told me that I would bleed. I bled for 2 weeks. I called this office to get the results on the polyp and Dr. Kennedy is claiming she never removed a polyp. Dr. Kennedy's nurse is also claiming that Dr. Kennedy didn't remove a polyp from inside me. Dr. Kennedy did not include the polyp removal in her doctor notes on my visit. I have reported this doctor to WakeMed and they are saying that Dr. Kennedy followed the law. I want this doctor to tell the truth. I have changed doctors and I now have to bring someone with me to all my doctor visits because of this experience and I now do not trust doctors.

Yelp
On 4/27/22 this was the experience:This is not where one goes if having a Mental Health crisis. My grandaughter stop there because she was having a melt down (Panic Attack) and this was the first hospital she saw on her way home from a job orientation. After she triage given a referral to where she could go she requested her clothing and phone so she could leave. It took a considerable lenght of time so she went into the hallway to look for the nurse who had cared for her. Mind you she is only dressed in a hospital gown with nothing underneath. She states that a security guard saw her and told her she can't leave to which she began to tell her what she was doing, but, a huge man sneaked up behind her, kicked her legs from under her an lay on top of her pinning her to the floor and smushing her face in the floor. The nurse who attended her came on the scene and asked what they were doing to her as she was discharged. The large man raised up off her saying well I didn't know that, nobody told me. The very reason she stopped there caused them to inflict more serious harm to her psyche. She was screaming and crying begging them why did they do this to her. Mind you she was naked and this man push her to the floor and was on top of her. The staff evidently are not trained in de- escalation or how to deal with persons in mental health crisis. Had it not been for that nurse stepping in who knows what would have happened to my child. This is an atrocity! I am livid that this behavior was enacted on my child! What a hospital! Her leg was twisted and her knee skinned when he threw her to that hard floor. She still needs help and even more so due to this but she is so afraid and dosen't trust any professionals now. She had nightmares last night, is still so nervous and shakey she say everytime she closes her eyes she feels that huge man's body on top of hers. She is easily startled, phobic, will not even let me take her to have her knee looked at. This broke my heart that this happened to her. She is only 23 and this has devastated her.

Yelp
I spent quite a bit of time at Wake Med this summer because my Dad was very sick. He was in the CCU for a long time due to being septic and having his organs shut down one-by-one. He was then in a room on the floor for a while so he could get back on his feet and continue to heal. The nurses in both units were wonderful. My Dad has other health conditions in addition to what he was being treated for. I felt that they really treated him as an individual and not just as a number. They individualized all of his care instead of treating every septic patient the same way. I could not have asked for a better experience. They absolutely saved my Dad'd life! They also have a really nice cafeteria and a nice cafe that is open pretty much all of the time. The soups in the cafe are amazing. Everything I had in the cafeteria was delicious, and well priced.

Yelp
Truly the most AMAZING staff here. From the desk person to the neurosurgeon and everyone in between!! My son has been at ER 3 times in a month and spent 8 nights here. I can't believe how wonderful each person was that we came in contact with!! Just wonderful, caring. Sweet, and smart people. Thank you ALL!!

Yelp
My review is for Labor and Delivery & Postpartum care. So impressed. Was an absolutely perfect experience. Even with some complications (due to my own health) after the epidural I requested, the nurses handled it perfectly and treated me with such compassion the whole time. It made a very scary experience less scary. I did not feel pressured or judged during my stay after delivering my child. I could not believe how sweet the nurses were. Every nurse I had was pleasant. I formula feed due to some health issues I have and not once did I feel judged or asked "why are you not breastfeeding?" In my past experience, some nurses at other hospitals will treat you like you're inadequate if you are not breastfeeding, without even knowing why. Not the case here. Thank you for that! Overall I absolutely recommend this hospital for any pregnant mamas. I would happily deliver here again if I ever find myself pregnant with a third child. My OBGYN were the doctors at Kamm McKenzie on Durant Rd. Highly recommend them as well.

Yelp
I'm leaving this review in hopes that others will be more aware and check all medical records prior to leaving the hospital, particularly ones that are inputted in EPIC. Back in early 2021, my partner visited from the Philippines with an International Travel Insurance like she always does whenever she comes visit. A week after her arrival, she experienced UTI which resulted in her being admitted to the ER and eventually ICU. Upon admission to the ER she went through the TRIAG which she explicitly explained the series of events/symptoms leading to the UTI. However, this was not noted properly in her medical records by the admitting nurse (instead of two days prior to admittance, it was noted 10-days) which eventually was submitted to the Insurance agency who then denied the claims because it was a "PRE-existing" condition prior to acquiring her international travel insurance which was absolutely "INCORRECT", if this was the case - she would have endured pain for 24-hour while traveling from the Philippines to the U.S which is absurd and who in their right mind would go through that? Now we are having to deal w/ a reduced $6K bill from $16K because of "uninsured discount" when it should have been ZERO had WakeMed staff been accurate with their notes upon admittance and filing of the claim which would have been paid-for by the Travel Insurance (who we've also contacted and was informed that it's denied because of the 10-day note on her medical records). I've been trying to work w/ their Billing Department to get some type of agreement where I can pay it monthly without a huge burden on finance, but I'm getting extremely frustrated with the entire process. She does not work in the U.S. which means no income, and no SSN to apply for any type of loan/credit. I leave this review for others to beware of, and perhaps someone from WakeMed can directly reach out to me and resolve this matter once and for all. I will update if anything new comes up; otherwise, hope others find this helpful

Yelp
As a undergraduate student who attends the University of North Carolina I was heavily displeased by my treatment here. Entering into the emergency department I was undergoing an allergic reaction and needed medical attention immediately. Trying to explain how my body was breaking out in hives and how my throat was closing at the front desk was difficult. The lady up front was extremely passive aggressive and was more interested in how my insurance card didn't qualify. Of course I need a method of identification but considering I was minutes from my death bed A method of payment wasn't my top priority. As I begin becoming more flustered I ended up getting irritated. The woman matched this and scolded me with the statement of "that will be $180." To my surprise, I ended up hysterically crying in the waiting room to the point multiple doctors walked out in an attempt to help me. This is the part where I was given medical attention and an epi-pen. Ridiculous how the woman up front was more concerned about money than about how I needed help. As a black woman as well, I can definitely see why they disproportionately die under the care of these "professionals."

Yelp
Do NOT take your loved one experiencing a mental health crisis to this facility! They do NOT reach out to the ones who have been taking care of these patients for years because "the patient didn't give consent." No shit they didn't give consent, they're psychotic and think everyone is trying to kill them! Are you kidding me? I called every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. He wouldnt speak to me and I understand they have to abide by HIPPA. But at no time did anyone ever reach out to me to GAIN information that could have helped with his care. I have taken care of his mental health for 2 years. I could have provided insight to what has worked for him in the past but I was ignored....UNTIL the IVC was expired and they wanted him out! Now they want me to pick him up! I told them that he was not ready for discharge but it didn't matter! They sent him to my home in an uber and he was homeless the next day because I cannot manage him on my own! They completely changed his meds and had no idea who his mental health provider was. This is ABSOLUTLEY UNACCEPTABLE! Especially since I had been in contact with them from the beginning. I sat in the ER for hours waiting to talk to a provider but I was told "If they have any questions, they will call you!" I'm his mental health POA! What does that even mean at this point? Does he have to be comatose? I work in the ED at REX, and we DO NOT handle mental health cases this way. Wake Med should be ashamed!!!! I will NEVER take a loved one to that hospital!!!

Yelp
My child was born February 2020. Somehow I continued to get billed for it through 2021. I made a huge payment to pay it off, but I was once again charged another bill. I had been making payments on my own, but because I didn't make a payment plan through them, they sent me to collections. They were no help and did not care that I couldn't pay the lump sum at once. Her response was "There's nothing I can do about it." She told me I had received four statements for that one bill. Looking back at my statements and payments, not one statement I received had the same balance. They were all lower than the one before. I don't understand how I was sent to debt collections when I've never received a statement with the same balance.

Yelp
Had a bike riding accident and dislocated my ankle. This caused a fractured, very painful.EMS brought me to Wake Med er. Check in was fast and efficient. It was Sunday morning and I appreciated that my problem was diagnosed, resolved, and I left within five hours. They also worked with my insurance and identified the upfront fees needed and even brought the credit card payment device to me.

Yelp
Absolutely excellent care. Not from Raleigh, only there for my job, I had the occasion to seek care in WakeMed Raleigh Emergency Room. From the moment I walked in to discharge 7 days later my care was the epitome of compassionate and kind. Dr. Eapen was my hospitalist and I could not have been in better hands. Her medical knowledge and her 24 hour availability to me was something I had never experienced before. I have never had a more attentive and kind physician in my 58 years. WakeMed Raleigh treated me with the utmost of kindness and outstanding medical care. The RN's, of which I had many in my hospitalization, were expeditious in my every request as well as my advocates throughout my stay. Sheila and Sarah and Katherine and many others extremely caring and knowledgeable as well as their nursing aides starting with Nickie and all the way til my last aide Robert provided such kind assistance and company during my stay. Yes, WakeMed Raleigh is an excellent choice for everyone's medical needs. Marge Berman NYC

Yelp
This medical institution has issues. Where do I start? In 2007 I was deathly ill due to a fall down the stairs and was admitted to WakeMed in Cary, NC. Since the ribs on my left side were broken my lung on that side filled with blood because I could not breath properly. I needed chest tube surgery. I am not even going into the ineffective surgeon who performed this procedure as he was so inadequate that this process had to be repeated since the chest tube was not put in the proper position to absorb the blood. If I had not asked for a second opinion, I probably would not have survived this second surgery as the initial physician wanted to perform it immediately. All my veins had collapsed at this point and smartly my new doctor advised to wait several weeks before an attempt was made again at this procedure. I spent over two weeks at WakeMed in Cary. However, with the competency of my new physician, I was released after just a few days of the second surgery. When I recovered, I contacted the Medical Board and advised them of the treatment I received at the hospital from the doctor. Their decision was that they felt the certified WakeMed initial physician's actions were appropriate and that this person should be allowed to continue to practice and not receive any judgment against him/her for their treatment in my case. Additionally, every day when I was at WakeMed I was never bathed or had sheets cleaned but they still got paid by me (or my insurance company) because "the doctor/hospital gets paid regardless of care". In the real world most people and/or institutions are not paid for substandard service and are held responsible for their actions. Fast forward to July 2021 and problems with WakeMed Orthopedics. I go into this place for help with bursitis/tendinitis which was diagnosed by a chiropractor in June 2021 even though pain was first noticed by me in 2017. I had gone to many doctors and chiropractors to alleviate the issues with no success since the inception of the pain. The specialist at the office refused to look at the chiropractic report and x-rays I supplied. Instead, I was told he would do his own x-rays and analysis. I knew this would be more costly but maybe that was the point of performing all these new tests. I got my third cortisone shot at that time which was, of course, unsuccessful like the ones I had received in the past. I had told this specialist prior to the shot that these did nothing to reduce the pain. I then asked the specialist for medicine to alleviate the discomfort. I was prescribed an oral drug that should not be given to someone like me who suffers high blood pressure and takes daily medication to control this condition. I felt physically ill soon after I took the medicine. My Primary Care Physician and pharmacist to stop the use of this drug immediately. Most likely, this specialist never reviewed my medical records and prescribed instead something that could have potentially caused me serious medical issues. I did contact WakeMed Customer Service in regard to these recent issues. The orthopedic specialist said he never received a copy of my chiropractic report. I emailed this to them along with the x-rays. The orthopedic specialist also said that the medication he prescribed was fine for high blood pressure patients. I sent them a link from WebMD that disputed this statement. Despite all of this WakeMed insists that this incident will "not be revisited or changed by anyone at WakeMed. To discuss payment options, please contact Patient Financial Services at 919-350-8359." Is this really a place that you want to entrust your life or that of someone you love? Personally, I would think very carefully about this before you deal with this medical establishment. It is clearly, in my opinion, an outfit that cares more about the dollars in your wallet than the beats of your heart.

Yelp
I was involved in a wreck involving my motorcycle vs an SUV on Oct 2nd, and WakeMed is where I ended up (not by choice - I asked wake rescue to take me to Duke - I don't think they heard me). The trauma center did what they could for me to try to ease the pain, but morphine was not working. It took several hours to finally get into surgery, but that was due to the OR already being occupied. It did take them a few days to realize I had some more broken bones in my leg. After the initial surgery they put me in the surgical ICU. The nurses and staff here did not give me a call button, in the event I needed assistance, until the next day. After the second surgery, a week later, the pain was very intense and the docs argued that I didn't need the iv pain meds - it was pretty awful - the nurses argued on my behalf but without much luck for several hours. I ended up spending 10 days at WakeMed. Generally, the rumors and pre conceived notions about hospital food are correct; most of the food sucks. For instance, the chicken was always overcooked and dried out. The pork chops were a little more edible. The side dishes were most edible out of everything, and everything was overcooked. Being on the same page: when pt realized there was a problem with my leg, they notified another department who then set me up for more x-rays. Once the x-rays were examined it was determined my leg was pretty well busted up. The next morning, however, a doctor came by to tell me I was being discharged. Later that morning, a discharge specialist came by with the same information at the same time the nurses were in there telling me I needed to possibly be ready for surgery on my leg, that day. Discharge was insisting I was leaving while the nurse was insisting I was staying. I have mixed feelings about the nursing staff and assistants. The daytime weekday regulars seem to do just as much as they need to just to get by. "What does it take to get cleaned up here?" seems to be one of my biggest peeves. The weekend staff does not seem to bathe the patients or change the linens. The weekday staff is better about bathing but I still had to press them on it. My biggest praise for the nurses was them going to bat for me over the medications I was being given. It should've been noted on the very first day that morphine was ineffective for my pain, and pepcid was ineffective for my gerd. It took a couple days to get meds straight. A week later (right after the second surgery} the doctors were back to square one with the meds and the nurses had to spend a day going over my charts and convincing the drs to put me on meds that work for me. For the patient, that's not a fun process. Once everything gets straightened out, there is a collective sigh of relief all the way around. Generally, the place is okay. They did put me back together and got me on the road to recovery. Some of the staff does care about what they're doing.

Yelp
Was hit above the eye. Had a deep gash about 3 inches long that was bleeding very badly and needed stitches. It was Sun late afternoon so ended up going to this ER with a bloody face. Wait time was listed as approx 30min. Well I was there for over 4hrs and was only triaged initially where they take your blood pressure and temp and send you back to the waiting room to be seen by a doctor. Went to the check in desk to inquire several times and was always told, they will see me shortly. I understand there are emergencies that take priority but 4hrs with a bleeding, deep open wound seemed ridiculous. Also at the time, I didn't know if it was just the gash or if I also had a fracture. I ended up leaving this ER untreated.

Yelp
It's a hospital. You come here for two reasons, you're thinking you're going to die, or you're having a baby. We've been here for the first one with a gall bladder on my wife and a choking incident on a newborn. We've been here for a second one twice, going on three times now/ I have no complaints about the labor and delivery section that we used in 2003 and 2009. I'll change that if it's different in 2012 when our fourth child is born there. My only gripe is it is so far away from Wake Forest. There is a north wake hospital but they have very little service beyond simple ER stuff. Every time we've gone there for real stuff (gall bladder, broken leg) they transport you over here. It's a pain to visit people here. Call them instead. Parking is a huge pita especially if you're carting kids around to see their mom and new sibling. Getting charged to park here while you're spending tens of thousands on a family member for medical services is really lame too.

Yelp
worsley experience EVER!! had to come here because of my child's awful migraines and the nurses where SO rude and my child was VERY scared of the IV but they did nothing and kept lying to her and pretended they talked to the doctor and threatened to get a cop to force her to get the IV when she clearly wasn't calm, wouldn't recommend do not go!

Yelp
No one wants to end up in the ER, but if you have to and it's the Wake Med ER that's one consolation! From the initial admission to the surgeries, physical therapy and lengthy recovery that is following, the staff were helpful, aware, compassionate and informative at every step of the way. Getting around the hospital as family of the patient was easy; if you can't figure out where you need to be from the many signs, chances are one of the many helpdesk staff or other employees will be glad to help you find your way. We were also told that parking is validated while a patient is in hospital, which was nice. The cafeteria stays open very late, though there are also other options open throughout the day and evening. The nurses were beyond professional while also exhibiting caring and warmth, and the equally personable surgeon did a remarkable job in repairing a serious injury. We were kept updated and informed at all times, which eased a fair bit of the stress. While I don't hope to end up in the ER any time soon, I know that if it's here I'll be in good hands the whole time!

Yelp
Male, 25, Ehlers-Danlos Type 4, uses a cane, has had two strokes, computer scientist, on a lot of medications. Wakes up and stretches and works out and shortly after projectile vomits and drops to the ground in screaming pain. Has had these problems before but not this severe - it keeps getting worse. This hospital keeps calling it "anxiety". Goes in and is in the most pain he's ever been in in his life. The staff are telling him to stop being in so much pain and that he's not really in pain, that he's scaring his wife, that it's just anxiety. Some nurses are laughing at him. One mumbles faking something something. Originally going to order an x-ray and somehow that's cancelled (he has insurance). Even though he's telling him it's not acid reflux, they order him a GI coctail, no plans to see if it's this hernia that's been a huge problem for years. Someone mispronounces Ehlers-danlos. We know we're screwed. There's not going to be a resolution here. They're then holding him to the bed asking him about insurance and about his deductible. I kid you not. They stick him in a room for a couple hours. He throws up black stuff. They throw it out, nurses laughing. Must not be important. We're told its the pepto bismol he took four days ago. Compassion and empathy are a couple states over. Not to be found here, it seems. We've never seen hospitals and their staff behave like this. Typically even the worst doctor will take a passing interest in what's going on with a 25 year old screaming in pain. A patient who removes his two inch ingrown toenails like he's taking out the trash. We've only been here a year and a half and we're moving in a month. When I was in jail at the age of 19, I watched a girl hemorrhage for four days while she had a miscarriage. They kept telling her to stop faking it. She was five months pregnant and she lost the baby. That is the only other time I've seen this type of behavior. I've seen it here at Wake Med now three times. It's not anxiety. It's not in his head.

Yelp
This hospital always tries to to their best to help when my child is sick. I sometimes feel as though the Children's emergency room doctors are not very thorough, but if you need some meds for and issue they will help with that. They do try to keep kids entertained and I appreciate that. They also try to rectify issues brought to their attention. I had an issue with the meal tray in my daughters room that wasn't cleaned after the last patient was seen and it was cleaned immediately. There was also linen left behind the door from the previous patient.

Yelp
Took my mother to the Emergency Room and it was a very unpleasant experience. The floors and rooms are dirty & outdated and the wait times are ridiculous. We were there for 7 hours , most of which was spent waiting and waiting and waiting. I would never go back there again! Very disappointing

Yelp
Had been a Duke patient for over a decade before receiving incontrovertible proof that they are horrifically name over substance. Thus far WakeMed have been better in scheduling, availability, customer service. Everything. WM have consistently won out in every measure. Can't believe I accepted such awful treatment for so long, and feel so lucky to have found a great provider now.

Yelp
I brought my elderly friend to the ER last week and the staff was so helpful and responsive. From Security, to Check-In, to the EMT (Jennifer, amazing!) to the Nurses, the Doctor, everyone made us feel comfortable and kept us informed. I had another friend in the Hospital as well and I went to visit him in the CICU... again, staff was wonderful and nurses helpful and efficient. A few days later I came back to see my elderly friend who was by now doing very well, in a pleasant, clean room. WakeMed actually assigned a "sitter" for her who sat by her bed and kept her company, and I took over for a while and she sat quietly on the other side of the room. Nurses came in and out and treated us so nice and now after a few days at the hospital my friend is recovering at home. Thank you so much WakeMed!

Yelp
I'm not even all the way better but I feel the need to write this review. The anger I feel is unreal, which is another reason why I stay away from the medical system the best I can. When this hospital have a hard time figuring out what is going on with you they have a habit of saying you're the cause of it and somehow it's you're fault. I urge people to be with their loved ones at all time if you can and get your medical records. They will tell you one thing to your face and then lie on paper, and they will even have the guts to say they won't remove it. They talk about patients in front of other patients who are awake and care hear them. They make fun of other patients, these are nurses by the way. I heard it first had as a patient. They need a private investigator to roam the hospital hallways so they can see what truly goes on. I plan on filing a complaint.

Yelp
WakeMed Children's Emergency: Went for an urgent behavior issue with my child. Communication was notably sub-par - I relayed the history and my child's current medications (these were incorrect on the discharge summary I was given as we were shuffled out of the hospital - when I mentioned this I was told "It doesn't matter"). The PA we met initially did not do a physical exam (perhaps this is normal for a behavior issue, although my child was calm and under control by the time we were seen) and mentioned getting a consult with Behavior Services which we consented to. Over the next hour we had 3 nurses cycle through the room drawing blood, doing an ECG and saying we needed a COVID test. None of this had been discussed with us and when I questioned why the diagnostics were being done, I was met with an eyeroll by one nurse and told by all ("Oh, the doctor will go over it"). That never happened and although all we left with were recommendations from Behavior Services (this individual was great although the two support services recommended were not able to be used because my child was out of the age range for both), we received a bill for $5000+ (some covered by insurance). Say what?!? I called six times over a 6-month period and logged ~5 hours on hold hoping to discuss concerns. I finally received a call from Patient Services. The doctor representative was kind and empathetic but offered no compensation or adjustment and simply an acknowledgement that communication was poor and coaching would be provided to the PA. Very disappointing... there was no benefit to our visit and outrageous costs. Will avoid this hospital at all costs in future.
