I gave birth at the Wake Med - Raleigh campus about 2 months ago and could not be happier with the care and service I received. This review is specifically for the birth experience - not the ER or any other departments. I was going back and forth between four and five stars. Four, because two of the nurses we had could have utilized a bit more bedside manner; I will get to that. However, I believe that two nurses that didn't meet expectations by far, for most of their time with me, shouldn't take away from the rest of the experience.
I will try and make a long birth story, short. We were sent in for an induction a week before my scheduled an induction due to slightly elevated blood pressure. We arrived around 7pm and checked in.
First things first - the L&D unit is amazing. Clean, spacious, comfortable. The plan was to have a natural birth so we started with the induction process that evening. My doctors from my OB clinic were there, and great as always. Two nurses that we had were hot and cold, and when the plan for my birth (not a "birth plan," but what the doctor's plan was), changed almost 24 hours later, these two nurses were sometimes kind, and sometimes rude. For example, telling me in a very rude way (my doula and husband saw this too), that I would not progress if I did not sit a certain way in the bed with the peanut ball. First of all, girl I ain't progressing with a ball at that point. Foley balloon, a LOT of Pitocin, and 24 hours later - just not happening. I understand the goal is to NOT have a c-section if possible, but my body just was not having it! They did not like the fact that I was anxious; I was upset - exhausted, on drugs. Long story short, don't be a nurse if you cannot handle anxiety in L&D patients when things get a bit off plan - it is a very vulnerable time for women. Find another career. That all being said, 24 hours after all of this, my OB (she's amazing, Kamm McKenzie OBGYN), brought up the c-section. This was a hard pill to swallow, as this was my original plan and was changed a few times. Either way, waiting for full labor to happen and pushing; my body just wasn't having it. Everything started moving really fast at that point. I got ready and my husband did as well. They took me to the OR and I got prepped, from what I remember. My OB, the surgical technicians = AMAZING. Yes, it was a bit traumatic since I had gone through all of that first, and wasn't exactly all there, but I was okay, healthy, and my baby girl was perfect. The c-section was flawless.
Finally moving on to the postpartum unit and that nurse experience. I cannot speak more highly of these people. Every single one of them, the lactation consultants, and doctors were absolutely amazing. Patient, kind, knowledgeable, supportive, etc. I couldn't have asked for a better recovery experience. They took exceptional care of me and my sweet baby girl. I felt comforted, safe, and as relaxed as one could be in that situation and atmosphere. They knew exactly what they were doing. Yes, they come in at ALL hours to check on us but that's how it works, and I'm glad they did! Even the cafeteria staff that delivered the (actually YUMMY) food was so kind.
When we were finally ready to be discharged, the nurses were so helpful, made sure we had everything we needed then and going forward, and answered all of our questions. We also had a lovely carseat guru come to assist: she was so amazing and helped us down to the car with all of our luggage!
I absolutely recommended Wake Med for a stellar birth experience! Definitely advocate for yourself at all times, and speak up too. This is YOUR journey as a mama and new parents.
