The Best Restaurants and Food-Focused Hotels in the Alps - Eater

"Like many ski resorts in Europe, Davos was a summer retreat during the 18th century and only became a popular winter destination in the 19th century, when visiting physicians started creating wellness programs that incorporated the cold Alpine air. The resort reached its peak the following century, with many hotels doubling as health clinics, including the Art Nouveau-style Waldhotel, a luxury sanatorium that inspired Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain." - Michelle Tchea

We stayed at the Waldhotel in June 2024 and so decided to return due to our previous experience. |The hotel provide a free shuttle service from Davos Platz Bahnhof which is great and they also dropped us back off on the day we left.|The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and helped with advice when we asked about various places. Thomas, the trail guy, gave us some advice on where we could go to do short walks. |We used the restaurant for an evening meal and all courses were of the highest quality. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice from hot food to breads, cheese and meats to cereals and fruit. Also an option to order specific eggs such as omelette and fried eggs. |The room was big and spacious with a lovely balcony facing over the town and mountains. |Only thing would be nice to have a coffee machine and kettle but this doesn't seem a common thing in Europe. There was however bottled water and each landing had a kettle with herbal and fruit teas and infused water and fruit which you can help yourself to. |The rooms had a selection of pillows which were so comfortable as were the mattresses.|There was a robe and slippers to use in the spa area.|The spa area is superb. With a wonderful pool with jacuzzi and water fountain. Also, there is an aromatherapy steam room and a separate steam room. The spa area has loungers both inside and out which look over the mountains. |You can book a massage at extra cost.||

A cosy hotel, where even the children enjoyed themselves thanks to the spa. The room was functional and clean. There were great views from the balcony. The service was particularly friendly and we felt welcome. The shuttle service to the train station was convenient.

Waldhotel Davos is a refined wellness retreat perched above Davos Platz, housed in a historic former sanatorium once frequented by literary figures. The hotel combines timeless Alpine elegance with a strong focus on well-being, nature, and panoramic views. It’s ideal for couples, wellness travelers, and those looking for peaceful luxury and attentive service, all in a setting rich in history and character.

This is a hotel with a long history, and it shows. It is fascinating to contemplate that Thomas Mann might have drawn inspiration for the Zauberberg by staying at the former Waldsanatorium. The house also exhibits these classic old hotel vibes I quite like. On the other hand you have to be aware of certain quirks, like many stairs and old lifts or slightly worn rooms and corridors. The view of the valley was great and it was so quiet at night. On the other hand you are a little out of the way. Everybody working there was very friendly and warm and we really liked the entertainer at the bar on Friday night, he was so enthusiastic! Dinner at the restaurant was outstanding, much better than expected. The spa and wellness section is nice enough, if a little small. My only quibble is that the water in the pool really was too cold which is a tad unfortunate as I didn’t feel like using it a second time.

I think that Waldhotel is the best hotel in the whole Switzerland! When we are in Davos, we stay only here, and we will keep returning year after year. Everything is exceptional here - luxurious rooms, the service, the restaurant and the bar, the wellness center with the swimming pool, and of course people working in this amazing hotel. |The view from every window there is mesmerizing. Breakfast is prepared from the locally grown produce - free range eggs, artisan breads and croissants, ham, sausages and bacon. Dinners are prepared by highly qualified chefs. One can definitely feel love and care in everything.

Everything is fine. I had a good swim in the basin, plus the sauna. With regards, Arpad, a Thomas Mann fan.

I recently stayed at the Waldhotel Davos for a few days both to ski and to absorb some of the old TB sanatorium atmosphere in Davos. The reception staff were exceptional in answering my many questions and were very efficient. The view of Davos and the Alps from the room balcony was awesome, even from the first floor (see attached photo). The included breakfasts were exactly what I needed, offering both American style sausage, bacon and scrambled eggs as well as European cold meats and cheeses with a selection of breads. I had a minor neck injury skiing so availed myself of the "sports" massage, which I highly recommend. The swimming pool in the massage area is amazing with a grand view of the local mountains. The hotel is nicely located within walking distance of many restaurants and points of interest, including the Medizin Museum (with a unique collection of photos and instruments from the sanatorium era) and the Schatzalp funiculair that takes you up to the Hotel Schatzalp (also a former TB sanatorium), as well as the Schatzalp ski area. I recommend walking back down to the Waldhotel along the Thomas Mann Weg, a 30-minute walk. But the bus route just a short walk downhill from the Waldhotel opens up travel opportunities all around the Davos area if one would rather not walk - a bus pass is included with your hotel stay. And speaking of transportation, the hotel shuttle service that provides transportation to, in my case, the ski areas and the bahnhof, was very reliable, helpful and efficient. So, all in all, I highly recommend a stay at the Waldhotel Davos. The attached photo is one of the balcony views from my first floor room.
