Walking Spanish - Review - West Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Located on the back patio of Las Perlas in West Hollywood, Walking Spanish serves gussied-up takes on Central American dishes like thick yuca fries topped with crispy pork belly, pan con pollo sliders, and pupusas with fillings that sound like entrees. If you’re famished after a few palomas, your focus needs to be the $30 pupusa flight, which includes all five varieties, including gooey gruyére and fontina cheese, chicken in mole poblano, and our favorite, “The Eastlos” made with consomé-laced masa and drippy goat birria. Orders are placed at the register on the patio, but we’d recommend taking your haul back into Las Perlas to eat. The lighting is better (re: darker) if you’re on a date, plus it's a short walk to the bar for another mezcal Old Fashioned." - Brant Cox

Great new spot inside of las Perla’s. I had the loaded yuca fries , and they were amazing definitely coming back. If you like yuca fries it’s the best in La at the moment. Go in and try it!

This spot inside las Perlas is amazing! They’re so friendly and the food is incredible. The pupusas and chicken sandwich was awesome. I want to try everything

Best pupusas and food all around.

Yelp
The atmosphere is good. The music seems to get louder as I drink more and more (jajaja). The bartender (with the hat) suggested me a drink (Las Perlas Margarita & Spicy Daisy) after hearing it's my first time here and was a great choice of drinks (I got both). Also the bartender is Very Good Looking in my opinion. The food was AWESOME [Walking Spanish](pupusas: Mr Chille, Cheese and Jalapeño y tacos: Mushrooms). The food was AWESOME. People came in pairs and groups throughout the night and had a great time. Service all around was great and felt safe the whole time I was here. I'm definitely coming back as long as I get to see that bartender!

Yelp
Im a local and used to love this spot until I walked out of this bar furious and in tears, after 2 drinks. Why? The BARTENDER CALLED ME A BITCH, BERATED ME, THEN REFUSED to close out my tab because he was wasted. My friends and I watched him take about 4 shots the first hour and it escalated from there. It was clear he was semi-drunk when we ordered our second round. About 20 minutes later we tried ordering our 3rd drink. My friends and I had been watching him proceed to take another 6-8 shots with his buddies in a matter of 20 minutes. I suggested we get another drink while we still could and spent the next 15-20 proceeding to ask him to please make us another round, while ignoring us and going back to his friends. My friends drink Mezcal and Its not my thing so I was ordering my drink with Tequila. The bartender BERATED me and refused to serve me because I would not drink mezcal. My friend got involved and asked why he was being unjustly mean and rude to me and wouldn't serve us. He replies, "Because She's A Bitch!" He stated he would serve them but not me. At that point, my friends sitting next to me witnessing all this said, "Woah Dude, Calm Down. She didn't do anything." I asked if we should just close out as I was super upset at this point, NOT ONLY because he verbally assaulted me, but he completely KILLED our entire evening, with friends I have not seen in a while. I asked for my tab and he shook his head and says, "NOPE," and continued to do this with an evil smirk several other times. Obviously, I am floored this is happening and am clearly very upset. My friends asked me to walk out. 5 minutes later they finally came out with my tab. Which, btw, I would like refunded for. He was a HUGE mess at this point and should NOT have been behind the bar. He was the only one there so no one did anything about it. Once they came outside, I warned another couple walking in of the situation and warned them not to go in. They went in and in 3 minutes walked out along with another few girls who told us, He was completely obliterated and even fell behind the bar. The security guy should have taken him out and closed the bar. But nothing was done. I was so frustrated and angry I was in tears. I got home and told one of my friends about what just happened, who lives close and goes there often. I later found out that he walked over to the bar, where the guy, think it was like Pablo or something, was STILL behind the bar taking shots. He walks up to the bar and they have a confrontation where the bartender came up to him and PUNCHED him, IN THE HEAD! According to my friend, he then pushed him into the hallway and PUNCHES HIM AGAIN in the shoulder! (I had NO idea or suspect that by telling him the story, he would have walked over). My friend ended up calling the police and filing battery charges. Someone snuck him out of the back of the bar because apparently within the 3 minutes, my friend said it took the police to come, he somehow disappeared. Mind you too drunk to drive and too belligerent to get into a Uber/Lyft. The police apparently gathered the security footage. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR. THEY REFUSED TO CLOSE THE BAR EARLIER AND IN FACT, LET HIM STAY BEHIND THE BAR. HUGE LIABILITY!! The bar ended up closing anyway. I would like to know he no longer works there and be refunded my money and apologized to. Also, they got rid of the amazing taco vendor in the back and replaced them with TERRIBLE FOOD! The meat was burnt, cash only, my friend hated the tortilla chips and the melted queso tasted like 7-11 cheese. DO NOT EAT HERE. It is SUCH a bummer because I used to LOVE this place. The irresponsible management is killing them.

Yelp
Whoa! What happened to this place? It used to be my go to local spot at least once a week. They changed the food vendor and now it's mediocre Mexican food at best. The Nachos, tacos, and asada fries are all a huge miss. There is nothing authentic about that 711 nacho cheese. The drinks are amazing but the bar tender we had tonight had taken several shots kept forgetting our order giving wrong orders to people and eventually was so hammered he fell over. Mediocre food...hard pass. Bartender so drunk and yelling at girls....pass.
google avatar

Yelp
Christopher is a legendary bartender skilled in his love of Tequila and Mezcal. His doorman is also one of the best dressed on the block and encouraged me to abandon my original destination to try a new experience a must try in the area.
google avatar

Ric M.

Yelp
Love the place, service is great, the food in the back is amazing. Good drinks, and great atmosphere. One of my favorite bars to just hangout and catch up with friends in the Hollywood area.

Roxy D.

Yelp
Met family there last night & had a great time. The bartender, Gab, was very knowledgeable on Mezcal and helped us. Everyone there was nice. the only downside was that the Sunday hours are posted differently. The website says 3pm, the door says 11am and reality was 5pm. I drove an hour expecting to start early, which didn't happen.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
My favorite local spot. Luckily for me, I live 2 blocks away. My best friend happens to be right above them. The service is always great and drinks flowing.

Yelp
Came here last night, parking was easy to find at 730pm on a Saturday. You can hear the music coming out the building from across the street that sets the vibe on what to expect There's a bar area, booths to sit at and watch the band, a little loud for a date but thankfully there's a back restaurant area far enough away to hold a convo and here your person You order before being seated where the host is, but you'll notice pretty early there isn't a waiter that will come by or drop off water or recommendations Margaritas were bomb and happy hour daily for drinks is 5-8pm, for tacos it's 5-7pm. Got the fish tacos, definitely a fresh made tortilla, really crispy. This review is mainly for how good those tacos were. The chips and guac were recommended to me from a friend but the chips were cold and host said that's how they're served I'd come back for those tacos and drinks
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
All around solid vibey taco/cocktail spot. The tacos are tasty, we had the Birria and Baja tacos, chips and guac, as well as the Spicy Cucumber Margs. Come for Happy Hour til 8pm!
google avatar

Carlos R.

Yelp
I love las Perlas , happy hour it's awesome .... And Taquitos in the porch patio yum !
google avatar

Siddhartha G.

Yelp
Not a poor taco was had this night. Shrimp, birria, avocado, my favorite was the curry chicken one. They took a bit to come out but so worth the wait. The salt-rimmed mezcal margs were fantastic too.
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
We got here right when they opened and it was well worth the wait. Do expect to pay LA prices, but worth it. We would have gone back if we had time. The bar tender was very attentive and nice and the mezcal was local and not the commercial ones so it was authentic and we got some tastings as well. The food in the rear was also fantastic!
google avatar

Jesus F.

Yelp
Drinks are delicious , bartenders were friendly. I wish it had more of a kitchen to get apps but even the ones they had were yummy

Tyler H.

Yelp
Yo this place is great. Eric is the best bartender ever!! Super welcoming, will educate about all the tequilas, especially mezcal!! Go to see him!!
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
Be careful coming here. It used to be the best spot but their bartender assaulted me while the security did NOTHING. The bartender was wasted beyond wasted and had NO backup. Fell behind the bar AFTER assaulting me and REFUSING to close my tab. He was blacked out! I filed a complaint and left a YELP and Google review with NO response from management. Didn't return my money or offer any consolation or apologies. They switched their restaurant vendor. The tacos are GROSS and burnt. Such a shame as this was a regular spot for me and other locals who I know will NEVER return now. The fact no one reached out to me is incredibly unprofessional.

Susana H.

Yelp
This is an absolute skip. I don't understand why this bar is so highly rated. I hate being deceived. The only good thing about this spot is that the cocktails are less than $13. Besides that? Go home! I wish I was in bed. I could've ordered Popeyes and had a better night. I'm nauseated at the fact that I paid for an Uber to get here. The place is decorated quite beautifully, but there is no real atmosphere. The music is obnoxiously loud. The bouncer looks like he's high out of his mind, absolutely miserable to be here. Why do they even offer food if it's severely overpriced and tasteless? There's no finesse. We ordered nachos. Fifteen dollars. My friend ordered a birria quesadilla. Also fifteen dollars. On what planet is a birria quesadilla a dry, sauceless mess with stringy meat? Why does this exist? Why even put this on the menu? Where is the seasoning? The consommé is nonexistent. There is no tinge of that distinctive orangey-red in the beef. As a Latina, this spot in its entirety is heartbreaking. This should be a crime. There are more compelling places to be in West Hollywood, or anywhere in Los Angeles really. Why do bars insist that hanging up string lights makes up for subpar service and food/beverage offerings? My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
google avatar

Andres N.

Yelp
Tried the super nachos (Al pastor), the quesa birria, and the Paloma. Honestley the food was mid, not flavorful. The chips in the nachos were decent. The highlight was the Paloma for 13 bucks. I only finished the nachos because I was Hungry. But I did not receive any guac or avacado. Overall the place is okay to chill at for an hour but not good enough to stay for much longer.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
I used to love this place. The ambiance and the drinks are still AMAZING, but they changed the food vendor and I'll now have dinner elsewhere prior to coming here for drinks. If they were to change the food vendor I'd be coming back for dinners and drinks, but the current food vendor is a particular food that I didn't prefer after trying it.
google avatar

Bianka G.

Yelp
Having been to the DTLA Location countless times I was eager to see if this location would be just as awesome! So so happy they have tacos here too!! And it was just as tasty. The tortillas are super soft and the meat is tender! The taquitos are loaded and their red salsa is really good. I felt like the selection of drinks/alcohol was a little more limited here but I did enjoy the drinks I did have. Went for a tequila mule to start and then the bomb combo of a Radler and shot of tequila! Good drinks, good food, good time!
google avatar

Ian W.

Yelp
If you want a great cocktail and Mexican food this is the place to come to. They also do tequila/mezcal tasting. Love this place
google avatar

Samantha Z.

Yelp
I am sooo happy I happened to jog by this amazing little place! First off gorgeous decor, super nice bartenders and best of all delicious drinks and food! This place is a true la gem Happy hour is $3 off drinks! Nice dark atmosphere with vibrant Mexican music playing, perfect for everything from a date night to night out with the friends!
google avatar

Gladys N.

Yelp
FOOD? WOW! Let me tell you. I visit Tijuana ALOT for the tacos. But here? I'm sorry, the mada is made by hand. Every single bite was AMAZING! You think you go to these bars in weho and don't expect nothing special especially when tacos are involved. We got the cochinita pibil tacos and i am amazed to be honest. Drinks were amazing. Bartender was amazing. It was my first time here today and I will definitely come back.

Yelp
5 stars for the drinks, 5 stars for the friendly service, 4 stars for the food. I'm a tequila lover and this Mezcal/Tequila bar is a great spot with a great vibe! I had the spiced Daisy w Mezcal, which was solid! I also love the Mezcal sampler, 3 different Mezcal shots all lined up on a very insta-worthy wooden board. Food is in the back, and can be ordered from a little stand, however many food items come in quantities of 3 - 4 (Like 4 Taquitos, or 3 Tacos) and no substitutions can be made - you can't mix and match different proteins. All good, rules are rules. Chips & Guac - 5 Stars. Yes, easy to make but done well here with pepitas and tasty tortilla chips. Potato & Shrimp Taquitos - 4 1/2 Stars. Quite delicious, complemented quite well with a red salsa. Asada Tacos - 4 Stars. I'm not a huge red meat guy, but these were quite good. This place does get crowded, but deservedly so as it's a great spot and the street parking was easy. Would love to check out their happy hour next time I'm in the hood.

Kevin F.

Yelp
Trust me, don't sleep on this spot ! a GREAT addition to the weho / santa mónica blvd bar scene! vibes are always 10/10 between the music, cocktails, & the bartenders you're always gonna have a great time at las perlas in weho, i know we did! after dancing for a bit we got hungry & the bar let us know they got new vendors doing pop ups in the back patio selling pupusas, burritos, tacos & other yummy latin treats. bonus points for having veggie options as well! overall 10/10 experience, we were able to dance, drink, vibe & enjoy some yummy food! do yourself a favor and stop by you won't regret it!
google avatar

Rose B.

Yelp
I came here with friends and it was a solid drink spot! I preferred a Paloma with mezcal. Very good drink. Chill vibe but not boring. Most people there were on dates or hanging with friends, I took a star off because the music was so loud it was hard to hear people.
google avatar

Brooke o.

Yelp
I cant recommend the drinks on draft.. I always end up sick from these, I don't know what it is. I will say the atmosphere is great here
google avatar

Urvie P.

Yelp
I still can't stop thinking about this place!! I went a few months back to meet up a friend for drinks I loved the concept and the taco place attached. the bar and tacos place are under one roof but separate so don't be alarmed. The MARGS were AMAZING for the price point. I will say this isn't your typical LA bar and tacos ( like the ones in Weho, that try too hard) it's BETTER lol, it seemed like a lot of those folks were going in with different expectations and demands. You come drink and hang find a spot to sit, I love how the place feels cozy but still pretty trendy feel it! I loved that a lot of it was self service. The servers were so kind if you did needed anything and very knowledgeable. The food now exceeded my expectations, the tacos were so gooood and the servers made changes to my dietary needs. They have nailed down everything, amazing food, good drinks, services and ambiance with great prices!!
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
The WEHO location USED to be so good, but they must've recently changed food vendors and staff and it's extremely poor quality. They now only accept cash or Zelle so be prepared before ordering. All the food comes in styrofoam containers and it tastes like cafeteria food. This place used to be amazing food quality and it's really taken a turn for the worst. So disappointing :( pls bring back the original caterer Maderno Cocina and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Angel P.

Yelp
I love going to Las Perles for their mezcal margaritas. First time ordering food and the churros. So good. The potato taquitos were so soft and moist inside. The churros had cajeta, a sweet caramel. Omg! So good!!!
google avatar

Becca R.

Yelp
Delicious food, excellent customer service, and fun vibe!! They have indoor seating and a covered patio in the back. It gets busy and is great spot to grab drinks and food and hang out!

Eric B.

Yelp
The taco / food stand in the back seems to have switched vendors and quality was horrendous -- the old spot used to punch above its weight, so why the change? The old vendors are why my wife and I would stop by at least every month or so. Drinks are still good and would easily rate a 4 or 5 star if it wasn't for the disappointing and uninspiring tacos that accompanied our drinks.

Adam M.

Yelp
I come to this bar when I want to hear good music and last night was great vibes, until a drunk guy started pushing woman around just to get to the head of the bar and started yelling at the bar tender. I saw the bar tender cut this guy off and the guy started throwing gang signs and flipped off the bartender. As the drunk guy was leaving, a guy followed him (I'm assuming this guy was with the girls he was pushing) and started to fight. The bartender and security broke it up and everyone was relieved the guy left.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Las Perlas is a loud and fun bar that has a great selection of mezcal. They even have a mezcal flight. Happy Hour is every day until 8 PM. Their house cocktails are made with tequila but can be made with mezcal for an additional $2. The margarita, a classic, is fantastic. Bar area has seating and standing area. Music was loud which made it difficult to talk and catch up with friends. Service is great.
google avatar

Jesse T.

Yelp
Great mezcal cocktails and very chill atmosphere. Great on a warm day. Bartenders have been very knowledgeable about their many different distillery brands.
google avatar

Ginny R.

Yelp
Okay, this is my first review for the WeHo Las Perlas, but had I reviewed it a couple of years ago, it would've been very different. I don't frequent this bar often - I haven't been for about maybe six months. For the first time since it opened, they have a different vendor serving food on the back patio. Awful. SO AWFUL. The previous vendor was so, so good. Whoever is there now serves up terrible food, they only take Venmo or Zelle, and they plop the food on your table in STYROFOAM CONTAINERS!!! Like omg, is Styrofoam even legal anymore? Shocking. Also, they don't clean up the tables throughout the evening. It's just pathetic. Add to that, the margaritas on draft are so sugary now, I am clearly going to be sick for the rest of the night after only having two of them. Shame, because the bartender was delightful (the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one). Won't be going back. Horrible.

Mimi ..

Yelp
My friends stopped by after hearing nothing but great things. The drinks were amazing and our bartender was truly on point! Thank you Cris! The Photo Booth is a cherry on top for a memorable keepsake of the night too!
google avatar

Dagoberto V.

Yelp
Its bomb for Mezcals!! Quite the mix. Chilling spot, could use options for food. Friendly spot and good surround music.
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Love having las perlas as our neighborhood bar!!! Always have good music, delicious drinks and the bartenders are all great. They have food available on the back patio (the Baja tacos are my go to!) which I highly recommend! I love that they change up their drink menu every so often- the No Se is my current fav. They also have a great selection of mezcal and can recommend something nice to sip on.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
Stopped by for a cocktail Sunday night and didn't know it was happy hour going on until 8 pm! Got the most amazing drinks, love the vibe of the restaurant. It was empty when we went but I can imagine it being very packed on a weekend or later at night. Definitely coming back soon

Liz H.

Yelp
First time here. But I would come back We ordered the Baja and shrimp tacos. Let me just say... the hand made tortillas make a HUGE difference. It's only the tacos- no sides. Which was a bummer, but again.. they are really good. The drink thing they offer with the tacos was a little misleading. It says you get a ticket for a $4 Tecate, but what they leave out is that you get $4 off the beer. So you still pay $4. That's the one star off Ordered the spicy daisy- it's super Smokey. So if you like it, then it's for you. Music is really loud and they have a section to take photos. Not a first date place since you can't really talk much. But overall... it's good for the food
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
Best Place to Enjoy a Day Off in WeHo! An amazing array of Mezcal and Tequila. You will be educated. And you just might dance your ass off. Moderno Cocina is in the back. The Kitchen is open until 12:30 am. Delicious Tacos and Churros. I love the Costilla and Fish Tacos!
google avatar

Paola M.

Yelp
I don't have enough good things to say about this place. from the moment you are greeted at the door the staff is so friendly, they make you feel so welcome and it's such a fun environment to be in. The drinks are really good, shout out to Rogelio and his amazing drinks! The manager is amazing, the bar staff is so friendly and the food is to DIE FOR as well as everyone that works in that kitchen You need to try every single thing in the menu, there is no going wrong there. The costilla and asada tacos are my fav but also the taquitos and churros are amazing. It is such a fun place! Def recommend to literally everyone!
google avatar

Nadia Fernanda P.

Yelp
We had a blast last weekend! The drinks were delicious (we had the Palomas and had to get a second round of those cause they were THAT good) and the music was bomb (probably appreciated more because we are Mexican and they were playing Mexican rock and some pop music from back in the day..) But the best part was the tacos!!! You have to eat them! Go straight into the bar, head to the back and order tacos!! We really liked the Jamaica Tinga and the costilla, but Our favorites were the potato and shrimp and the mushroom!! Go treat yourself!
google avatar

Kate Lý J.

Yelp
Loved the cocktail I had from here with jalapeño and cucumber. Perfect amount of spice... and alcohol!!!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Great food and great bartenders. Spiked daisy is the perfect spicy Marg. They ended happy hour at 7 instead of 8 which was kinda odd cuz the sign said 8, so keep that in mind as we spent over $200 for 4 drinks and 6 tacos. The tacos aren't especially cheap but they are very good and the tortillas are excellent. Wish you could mix and match
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
So glad this place is so close by to me! I love coming here for margaritas, good food and an incredibly friendly staff. I highly recommend the surf n turf taquitos if you are dining in, but everything on menu is incredible. (food is cooked and sold in the back, separate from the bar) This place can get quite lively, even on a Monday night sometimes! Definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Kat H.

Yelp
The food and drinks here are delicious. Bar is upfront and the quieter dining area in the back is really cute. The costilla tacos and brussel sprouts are a must!
google avatar

Yelp
Walking from Plummer Park, I came across this joint right before it opened at 5:00pm. I was intrigued so when I finished my walk I returned to find the small mezcal and tequila bar had filled up. At first I was confused and spoke to the bartender who told me that the food was ordered from the Moderna Cafe in the back. I downloaded the separate Las Perlas bar menu and Moderno Cucina Libre food menu. Happy hour is from 5-7pm so I was in luck. I wandered around the front bar/dining area, hallway and back food area. As a lightweight and cheap date when it comes to alcohol, I knew I had to order some food, so in the very back corner I ordered potato & shrimp taquitos. I took a seat at the long row of seats facing the front bar and once they brought me these fine looking taquitos, I stepped up to the bar and ordered an El Niño- lime, House Grenadine, Chinola Passion Fruit Liqueur, Real de Valle, Blanco Tequila and La Luna Cupreata Mezcal. This is Las Perlas version of New Orleans Hurricane and the last time I had a Pat O'Briens Hurricane was when I was 21. The cocktail went really well with the taquitos that had a really nice kick to the creamy potato and shrimp filling. I had two of the four which was surprisingly filling and very tasty as the blue corn tortilla shell was crispy but not heavy. Now that I know this joint is a two places in one, I definitely want to come back and try more offerings from both. Well played and poured, Moderna & Las Perlas.

Adam A.

Yelp
Good... until you check your bank statement and notice that bartenders charge more than what you left for tip. Be aware or check bank statements after going here. They try to take advantage and finesse extra tip.
