Walter's BBQ Southern Kitchen

Visited on 07/18/2025 (Saturday) Came to tour around Pittsburgh and was in the mood for some BBQ. Came with my girlfriend, brother and his girlfriend, at around 4PM. The menu looked intriguing and it was fairly priced. It wasn’t too busy, and there were plenty of servers around. Ours wasn’t as attentive as we liked to. There were two instances where we left the table to find our server to try and get help. Outside of our specific server, the rest of the staff were friendly and attentive to us. The food came our table relatively quickly and the atmosphere was generally great, with playing 2010’s classic hits that was easily enjoyable. The food was good, the brisket was definitely a standout. The mac and cheese was surprisingly good, and the pulled pork was good a nice eat as well. The baked potato was packed, the mashed potatoes were delicious, and the potato salad was also surprisingly good. It was a bit disappointing for a BBQ place to only offer two types of BBQ sauce, a house sweet and a house spicy. The sweet was better on the taste buds, and the spicy tasted like it wasn’t trying to ease into the buffalo sauce side. The spicy wasn’t particularly spicy, either. Overall, it was a good eat for BBQ in Pittsburgh. We paid around $30 per person after sides and soft beverages. Would recommend it if you’re craving it when in the area.

Walter's BBQ Southern Kitchen was an amazing 5-star experience for my family! I was a bit unsure at first because they seemed to be nudging customers towards using tech. The menu and ordering process is all done through a website. I had to check out the menu, place my order, pay, and then someone brought the food to my table. It turned out to be easier than I expected. They have a massive menu, but unfortunately, a lot of the dessert options were either not available or sold out. The side dishes are all a la carte, so you can build your own meals. Prices were a tad higher than other similar spots in the area, but the quality of the food definitely made it worth it. The food was flavorful and absolutely scrumptious. The outdoor dining vibe was chill and serene. There were outdoor games to keep you entertained, plus TVs and music. I really liked all the powerful fans placed around the restaurant to keep everyone cool. I'm looking forward to visiting this place again soon!

This BBQ restaurant came highly recommended for the food and great service and it lived up to our expectations! The place was jumping and had such a great vibe! Chill! Make a reservation and come hungry! Smoked brisket and pulled pork were our favorites! Portions are just right but good luck trying to finish your meal. You will be full! Nice drink and beer selection too. (You will want to avoid the tables with stools!)

The food was absolutely amazing. We had the candied bacon and chips and salsa. Both very good. Wife got the smash burger...HUGE!!!! Me and the son split the the Sandman Box. Pulled pork, ribs, brisket, cheddar jalapeño sausage and 3 sides with corn bread. Abby had the chicken and waffles. Ton of food for a great price. The service was amazing as well. Highly recommend!!!!!

If everything was made how the menu states, it would be a 5/5 star. Neither one of our sandwiches came with sauce (on the side or on the meat), meat was really dry and everything was just messy. The wings we asked for sauce on the side, received none of it. We got to-go, were given no utensils. The only sauce we got was ranch for the wings, which we liked the wings. Also off-putting that the celery looks either chewed or just old. For spending almost $42 this does not come close to satisfying. Also to add they were very slow and not busy what so ever, so I feel as though nothing should’ve been messed up.

The guys did forget to give us some sausage from our order, but the server was nice enough to help us out. Brisket queso fries were great. They use battered fries! The candied bacon was my favorite. The sides could’ve been better.

I've passed by this place a few times and the patio is always full so I figured it had to be good and I'm happy to say that's true. Everything tasted really good and the service was fast. Only downside is they don't have a dedicated drink menu that isn't alcoholic, but our server was very nice to talk through our options and gave recommendations as well.

Walter's BBQ in Lawrenceville is a decent spot for a drink and a quick bite. The outdoor seating area is nice, especially since it's dog-friendly. The smoked wings and brisket sandwich were great, but the chicken sandwich and chips with queso were just okay. The service here is partial, meaning you order on your phone and they just bring your food over. This isn't my favorite, especially given the higher prices. However, if you don't mind this setup, it's worth giving this place a try.

Walter's is the spot to go for their happy hour deals and patio vibes. I love how kid and dog friendly this place is. It can get a bit hectic during busy hours and the wait for food can be long. The happy hour tacos are only $2 each which is a steal! The pork belly and brisket tacos are fantastic. Come early if you want to claim a large outdoor table or else you may have to wait a while.

First time here. We had the big salad with brisket and chopped brisket sandwich with mustard potato salad. Our waitress Jada was excellent and had no issues asking the kitchen a couple of allergy related questions. I thought the portions were great and the prices were fair! So many table games available and tomorrow is movie nite, they're playing Top Gun Maverick.

The service was excellent and the food was awesome. we went for brunch and enjoyed it thoroughly. I would highly recommend the restaurant.

We went to Walter's for a dinner and they had a variety of options to choose from. The service was quick and not bad. The restaurant itself was warm and fairly large with plenty of TVs to watch. They even had an outside seating area for when the weather is warmer. The food came out hot and it was pretty good!

Back at Walter's again for their Monday night steak dinner. This time, I walked in and no one greeted us so we just sat at a table.I came with my friend because she also loves steak. There's a QR code at the table for us to order. There was also a table with water and glasses so you can get your own. We each ordered the steak dinner via phone. A while later, our dinners came out. The steak was cooked great and the potato and brussel sprouts were also good. No one really came over to check on us. We needed to-go boxes. We waited for a while but it was chilly outside so we just ended up getting the boxes ourselves. The service was not as good as the last time I went. I thought it might have been a staffing issue, but the staff seemed very attentive to a select few tables. So I'm not sure what that was about?

I've been here before and the food is decent. My teenager went with his grandmother, he has a gluten intolerance/ celiacs. She called ahead, and also when there they asked about wheat being in the brisket tacos he ordered. His server assured them that she understood the allergy and there were no wheat ingredients, used corn tortillas, etc. My teenager is not super sensitive, and very diligent about managing this, it's been over a year and many restaurants internationally since the last issue. But that changed today, he threw up his entire lunch over the course of a miserable afternoon. I can't tell from other reviews if this is a consistent issue, or came down to one careless person and bad luck today. I hope the restaurant will take some measures to do better, and if you're a gluten-conscious diner I would be quite cautious here.

I rock with Walter's they're open pretty late to be on Butler Street. I love that they show sports on the TV and have nice music and yard games making this place great for gathering. It does however get really crowded making it hard to find somewhere to eat your food. I always go straight for the chicken sandwich with no bacon and their Mac and cheese. I was a bit confused when I bit into the cornbread once and it had jalepenos in it. It was a bit of a no Bueno for me. The service is okay but sometimes you can see the frustration of the employees on the busier days. Drinks are a bit affordable and when people ask me how to describe Walter's I say it's like a restaurant if most of it was outside.

I'm so excited to have a good bbq spot on Butler plus they have outdoor seating which is chefs kiss. The potato salad was an interesting mustard color which made me hesitate because I'm not a mustard fan but it turned out to be my favorite side dish. I'm a sucker for whipped butter so theirs with the jalapeño corn bread is my guilty pleasure. I've gotten the lean brisket twice and the fatty brisket once and the fatty brisket had a bigger portion than the lean pieces. I'll have to go back and keep trying both to increase my sample size- for research purposes but also because I love this place.

We came when it was fairly empty. Not only did the food take over an hour to come out, but they simply didn't care about the quality of the food being served. The paper used to smash the burger patty was glued between the patties of the burger and killed my appetite when I saw it sticking out without a care in the world. The sausage felt almost cured and there was not a semblance of snap to be had. Brussel sprouts were delicious though.

We had the half pound of brisket which wasn't bad not great for the amount of money it was. We had the mac and cheese before and it seemed better than this time and I thought we even got more this seemed like a very small amount for $6 and didn't have a lot of flavor. The service was good though

Favorite weekend spot in Pittsburgh. Such a fun time on a sunny day! Brisket Mac and cheese is amazing, you can order from QR codes and they bring it right to your table. There's corn hole, connect 4, and jenga to play as well, it's a great spot for an evening out!

Walters is fine. It's more of a bar than anything- drinking and sports is the priority here. Depending on what you get the food is hit or miss ; can't say it's gonna be a banger every time. I've had stuff that was good, then stuff that wasn't. I remember the Mac and cheese being a bit dry and flavorless, the chicken a little dry too.

I usually come here past midnight on the weekends, but one evening I decided to try their food. I got a pulled pork sandwich and everything was surprisingly good. Fries were excellent and service was great.

I think this is the largest meal I've ever been served (and ordered whoops) in my life. Needless to say portions are beyond generous. I got queso with brisket which was great and the chips were so thin and crunchy. The pulled pork with both bbq sauce options was also a high light. The mac n cheese was super cheesy and i love breaded fries although these were a tad salty for me personally. Overall great meal, very very fair price, and nice and friendly staff. The atmosphere is also super cool and I love that there was a dog chillin next to me. Definitely a place to check out!

Great BBQ and a great outdoor vibe. The Lunchbox special gives you your choice of meat, 2 sides, and cornbread. Only one complaint: if you order ribs you only get two ribs. You read that right, only TWO ribs. The price for the special is fair for what you get, but I think a few extra dollars for a bit more meat would be a better pricing option. We split two lunchbox specials and had ribs, brisket, brussels, mashed potato, mac and cheese, and fries. Everything was tasty and met expectations. The cornbread was jalapeno cornbread, but that wasn't clearly advertised in the menu. This left my wife unable to eat her cornbread (she doesn't handle heat well).

3 words. Sunday Fun Day! Walter's is the best spot for a sunny day in the burgh! Tons of outdoor seating, so many drink options, and AMAZING food. We spent hours and hours of our Sunday here, and this summer is only getting started! The brisket on the fries was awesome, melts in your mouth. The chicken sandwich had so much flavor. We couldn't stop ordering cornbread and biscuits for the table. All around a great day thanks to this spot !

I tried Walter's Easter weekend as I was visiting my Mom I purchased the fatty brisket, Mac and cheese and potato salad. Upon entering restaurant is clean, music playing bar in the middle and seating throughout the rest of the restaurant. Music playing and to go orders had to be placed at the bar. Bartender was professional, courteous and answered all our questions and if she wasn't sure she went to the kitchen and asked. After placing our order the food came out in 6 minutes. The brisket was full of flavor, tender (melt in your mouth) the macaroni and cheese was made well however needed some seasoning upon adding seasoning ...delicious. The potato salad I am not a fan of due the amount of mustard, and flavoring was not to my liking. Lastly, I would recommend Walter's and I definitely will try more food choices when I go home to Pittsburgh again.

I apologize in advance. Awe, had a real nice lunch at Walter's pulled pork was no fish! Forgot about christianity while here. I wondered why there was so much fish on the menu. Let's focus on the delicious savory meats that were presented. The Bloody Mary that brought me to sheer happiness, and the lovely ambience that was unexpected for such a random snowy day. It's hit our miss. One time I go on the food and bartender is great. I went last Saturday and the bartender basically tried to say I was lying about what I had ordered last time... and also said you get whatever is on the line when I asked for fatty brisket.... Poor service behavior... all she had to say is she will see if they have any fatty brisket left.... My meal was mediocre and I will not be returning. She asked if I wanted to take my food home when I ate less than half of it.... The other bartender I had previously was there and you could tell she tried to make up for the others poor attitude....

I love going to Walter's in the summer, the atmosphere is always on point and high energy! I love the Mac and cheese and of course fries!

Went to this restaurant on March 21st 2025 at 8pm on a Friday an ordered their smoke Half chicken and I didn't like it at all but it came with Mac and cheese and that was nasty there Greens taste like they weren't cooked with love an the cornbread is horrible , but there service is top tier I give Walters from a scale from 1-10 a 4

The BBQ was really good, we would definitely be returning. We were a party of five and ordered 2 platters, and a brisket which were more than enough. We had some food left over. Our server was really nice, 2 of the people in my group had bloody mary and they said it was really good, they also have a nice selection of local beers. The ambience the day we went was still early so only 2 other tables, but we have been here one time prior, and I love the fact they have a nice terrace area to enjoy when the weather permits.

The host seated us in a covered portion to avoid the rain which was appreciated. At the time we had to request a server , but unclear if we were seated to an unassigned area. I enjoyed the brisket nacho loaded fries. And they had great barbecue sauce options. This place overall is a laid back space and street parking is available

The food was good the person taking the order's was a cool guy and the entire ambiance of the establishment was just all around good

A great place for tasting Texas style barbecue while being surrounded by young people having a good time. You have to order on your phone. So, not a good place for the tech illiterate. But the online ordering process just fastens the ordering process and makes it easy to split checks. That's what many of the young diners would like. I ordered pork belly and brisket. Both were delicious. The beer was also awesome. No dessert on my he menu! The service was fast and friendly. Overall, great food, fast service, good for a casual hangout with friends, especially the young ones. Not good for formal events or for older people. We enjoyed our visit and will get back as soon as we crave good barbecue.

My husband and I come here frequently. It's really nice in the summer when you can sit outside. The bbq is always delicious and we always get great service!

Attentive staff, comfortable eclectic atmosphere, delicious bbq. Love the brisket. Cornbread had a twist with green and red peppers, thats not quite my thing but the cornbread itself was moist. Tacos are REALLY good and fresh!

This place has great food! They do a pretty good brunch in town and we loved their fried chicken and waffles and biscuits and waffles. You can tell they brine their chicken and the breading is very well seasoned. I do like things peppery though. The chicken and biscuits can get a bit messy and the plate wasn't big enough for all of it. When my friend cut into their egg, it almost went onto the table. I really like their brisket here too. This time the brisket sandwich was only ok, but I think the slices of brisket might be better than chopped brisket. There is not a whole lot of service here since you order on your phone after scanning a QR code. There's really only someone bringing your food to you and that's really it. However, the process to order and check out was really seamless. I actually liked that a lot. It was a rainy cold day when we went and there was limited seating inside. We didn't love the bar top seating especially since we reserved standard seating on Open Table and our party had a dog with us. Love that this place is dog friendly! It was just hard to have the dog there while sitting at the bar top. They have a lot of outdoor seating so it would be great for a nice day. They also have mimosas and bloody Mary's on their menu too. It's a little confusing when entering because there's no hostess to really tell you what's going on. But overall, a very nice spot for brunch and whenever you're craving bbq.

Mmm some of the best bbq in Pittsburgh! Very cute space with games and outdoor seating. Everything we got was delicious. Fatty Brisket, wings, pulled pork, Candied Bacon, Mac & Cheese, Fries, Cornbread, and ribs all came out hot and mouth watering. You scan a barcode to order. Service was a little slow though. The selection of drinks was nice to pick from as well. Get there early before it gets too crowded!

I've been coming to Walter's for years now and was blown away by Haylie's customer service, friendliness, and attention to detail. She went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of not just this time, but consistently every time we visit. Having formerly worked in the service industry, I appreciate good employees like Haylie who prioritize customers. Walter's would be smart to keep scheduling her for all the rush hours. If you see her, request her special spicy pineapple mojito. Thank you Haylie!

Food was just...meh. Wasn't busy at all and food arrived 5 minutes or less after ordering so that was perfect since we needed to get going to a concert. Waitress didn't charge us for drinks so dinner ended up being only $25. However the food wasn't yummy, it was just blah food so we won't be returning or recommending. We ordered: Pulled pork, Mac n cheese, fries and Brussels sprouts. Edit: I see the business description says "many vegetarian options". As a vegetarian I had very little options. There was a salad on the menu though if you consider a salad "many" options.

I love Walter's! It's a great spot to hang out with friends, watch games, and eat some good bbq. We were able to snag a great seating area that had swings, benches, and giant Yahtzee. The service is quick, and the QR code ordering on your tables makes it so you don't have to fight your way up to the bar to order food/drinks. We tried the pulled pork, fries, and collard greens. The collards are so good that we ended up ordering more! The bar has a good beer selection, I just wish they had descriptions on their menu beyond just the beer names because it made it kind of difficult to know what I would like. Overall, though, this is a fun spot and I will definitely be back! Food: A- Drinks: B- Service: A- Ambiance: A-

Walter's was better than I thought it was going to be. We stopped by for a late lunch. Ribs and brisket were good enough, but the fried chicken breast stole the show. It was everything you hope a fried chicken breast will be - juicy, flavorful and crunchy. I liked the very sweet cornbread and whipped butter, too. Mac and cheese did not offend. The collards had a little too much vinegar for my taste, but maybe some people like them that way? Service was competent and friendly. This place probably rocks in the summer when the patio is open.

Stopped down to try out the brunch. I like the lay out of the restaurant. Nice sized bar and the patio is also a nice feature. The food, beer and service were great.

I got the big salad and I didn't want it to end. The balsamic dressing was so good. The cornbread croutons were delicious. The Mac and cheese is also good. And you can never go wrong with chicken fingers and fries. I love all the pitt food seating. You can do most of the ordering on your phone which is nice.

Liked it. The food was decent, but they were out of half of the sides (greens, potato salad, and another one can't remember). They replaced what was supposed to be greens with mashed potatoes in my chicken platter (which was good), just a lot of carbs and they didn't give me a choice. The ordering process was my favorite part about the restaurant. You just scan the QR code at your table, order, and pay for everything from there. The service is a little slow and if you're not a dog person don't even visit. The outdoor area is nice to be in on a nice day.

Can be very very busy on Friday nights and the weekends. Definitely a young hangout. Food is decent as it is one of the only places you can get BBQ.

Lovely place full of lovely people and loud music. Love the outdoor section as well and how they're doggy friendly! They have a small section where you can play games which is cute. There really isn't too much service as you order through a QR code and they bring the food to you. However, staff was attentive enough and there really wasn't a very long wait. Really liked everything we had there. There's definitely something for everyone and my favorites were the pork belly, loaded fries and Brussels sprouts. Cole slaw was nothing special and Mac and cheese was not bad. Tacos were sadly very dry and even with the sauces they provided it wasn't amazing. They have a spicy and sweet bbq sauce, both were ok. The spicy wasn't very spicy at all but mildly helps cut through some of the fatty meats.

The food here is very tasty but the service was even better. We sat the bar and had the most wonderful bartender, Haylie. If you decide to go to Walter's and sit at the bar be sure to ask for Haylie. She is not only a great bartender but also super personable which made our experience 10x better.

WHAT AN AMAZING PLACE! Every once in a while you come across a place that leaves an indelible mark on you, Walter's Southern Kitchen is definitely one of those places. We came from Toronto for a concert and the following evening we were looking for a bbq place to eat later in the evening. The staff was happy to accommodate. We had wings, pulled pork, candied bacon and more all of which were absolutely delicious. The pulled pork was truly amazing and the corn bread was the best I have ever had. The drink selection was fantastic, the music/ energy in the place was up beat and so much fun. As good as the food and the ambiance was and that alone is enough to make me want to make the trip back from Toronto the biggest highlight must go to the staff. Chelsea, Todd and Hailey (I'm sorry if I spelled your names incorrectly) and the rest of the staff thank you for going out of your way in making our visit to Walter's Southern Kitchen the highlight of our already wonderful trip to Pittsburgh. To start we had chips and queso which was delicious! The we got the smoked meats platter with collards, brussel sprouts and cornbread. Everything tasted really good and the atmosphere was really nice with yard games that the kids could play. The wait staff was all super friendly and took time to chat with our kids. It was a great evening out for the whole family!

I ordered a Hendricks and tonic and what I got was all tonic. I was very disappointed and we come here a lot. I asked to have the drink re done and I was told that I can get another shot but I would have to pay for it. The young bartender does not know how to make a drink and I should have been given a free drink. VERY DISAPPOINTED!! The bartender also did not give me Hendricks after that. Gave me a cheap vodka. Ve been going to Walters for the last 4 years the food changed a little. For example, an appetizer of ribs give two ribs and a dinner order gives you four ribs for $22. Way over priced!

Phenomenal experience at Walter's! Service was great even considering it was a very busy St Patrick's Day weekend. Hostess Cathy and server Addie were wonderful and food was amazing - My husband and I split The Sandman, and the brisket, pulled pork and ribs were delicious! Really fun and high energy ambiance!

As good music played, so was the food.... pulled pork sandwich and fries tasted great. I will be coming back here, maybe for dinner. I want to get the other great looking dishes.

Im usually hesitant to spend my precious side allowance on something like brussel sprouts but thankfully the people I was dining with decided to try them and I. Was. Dead. Wrong. These were the best brussel sprouts I've ever had as they were sweet and crispy and just delicious. The mashed potatoes were also out of this world along with the mac n cheese too. I just love sides okay? Walters really impressed me this trip. The ribs were good but I would try a different cut of meat next time to change it up. The heaters inside were a nice treat and the service was great. I love this spot!

This is a really good place for outdoor eating in a casual environment. I went with a larger group and we filled our two picnic table's worth of space with a lot of good food. The highlights were the brisket queso (the right amount of the two primary named ingredients and the tortilla chips were perfect), pork and chicken tacos. Good pork ribs and even better brisket-fatty or lean, while the mac 'n cheese was great!

We had called and were told that they didn't take reservations, but when we arrived there were quite a few empty tables with reserved tags on them. No one ahead of us in line, the hostess looked at all the empty tables and said that they were cleaning one off right now for us, just a couple minutes. She left and never came back. We waited about 15 minutes, now there was a line looking to be seated and a very nice waitress accessed the situation and brought us to a table. The food came almost immediately after ordering. It wasn't hot, except for the greens. We got the ribs, pulled pork and brisket and they were quite dry. We told the waitress ( who was wonderful) and she said that was because the smoker wasn't working today. So, where did this food come from? How long ago was it made? Oh well, live and learn. Definitely not the best bbq in Pittsburgh. Wait, what if it is?

Indoor seating, outdoor seating, self pay option, great beer list, and smoked meats what more could you want? We have tried most of the menu and have yet to find something that doesn't disappoint. Attended a work party here and the staff was exceptionally pleasant and helpful!
