Compact Japanese restaurant featuring ramen dishes & oysters, plus happy hour specials.
"One of the city’s meatiest bowls of ramen is found at small Greenpoint ramen parlor Wanpaku, which conceals the “secret” cocktail lounge Hidden Pearl in its depths. The beef rib ramen, which is sometimes on the menu, is served with a massive, bone-in rib as its centerpiece, almost too much meat to eat in one sitting. Other worthy ramen soups here include the spicy pulled pork and miso beef versions." - Robert Sietsema
"What It Is: A Japanese restaurant in Greenpoint with curry, small plates, and ramen Perfect For: Casual Weeknight Meal In Greenpoint, there’s a new Japanese restaurant with a bar hidden in the back. We had already been to the bar (and you can read about it here), but we recently went and tried the restaurant, Wanpaku. We got seated right away, then we proceeded to eat a good number of their small plates. The Japanese fried chicken was pretty good, and the salmon tartare that came topped with a raw quail egg was interesting, but we weren’t too into the pork bun or fried oysters. That said, our pork katsu curry was great, it was a nice-looking minimalist space, and the staff was friendly. The Verdict: If you find yourself in Greenpoint, try Wanpaku for a weeknight meal, and stick to the larger plates." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg, chris stang, matt tervooren
"If a ramen special with spicy shredded pork swimming in a miso broth happens to be on the menu one night at Wanpaku, order it. If not, a version with slow-braised beef ribs is sure to satisfy, as is a pork katsu curry someone had the ingenious idea to top with a scotch egg. After dinner, walk through the spare, brightly lit interior past the kitchen and go for a drink at the Hidden Pearl. Inspiration comes from Okinawa at the 18-seat cocktail bar opened in 2018." - Diana Hubbell
"Wanpaku is a Japanese restaurant in Greenpoint with a nice-looking minimalist space, friendly staff, and a bar in the back called The Hidden Pearl. They have a bunch of small plates, including some very good Japanese fried chicken and salmon tartare with a raw quail egg. Feel free to skip the pork bun and fried oysters, but we’d suggest not skipping the tonkatsu curry. It’s great." - Bryan Kim
