A beloved North Boulder haunt, rebuilt and reopened after a kitchen fire. Boulder Weekly reported the comeback, and Axios readers champion it for its relaxed vibe, solid plates, and skinny margaritas.

Today, I had an absolutely phenomenal experience at this restaurant while celebrating my daughter's birthday. From the moment we arrived, I was struck by how immaculate the establishment was, and the service we received throughout our meal was nothing short of perfect. My personal highlight was the fish tacos; they were incredibly delicious and remarkably fresh, truly a standout dish. Our waiter was exceptionally friendly and attentive, further enhancing our dining experience. The overall quality of the food was simply amazing. I would enthusiastically give this restaurant a perfect 10 out of 10 and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

Google
The Mexican food here was absolutely delicious and filling. I recommend the carne asada meal, as the steak was cooked to perfection and the meal itself was super filling. Great little spot in Boulder. There’s a indoor/outdoor area.

Sara Stone

Google
Had the carnitas plate today. HOLY SHIIII... BEST Mexican food I've found so far. Service was great. They were kind when I attempted to practice my Spanish.

Jenna Drager

Google
Great large portions. Very good price for boulder. We sat outside and it was great for kids and dogs. Highly recommend!

Derek Thomas

Google
The food was extremely good and well portioned! I really like the sauce and the detail they put into every dish. The kids meal was kind of playing but that's somewhat expected. The prices seemed okay, and the portions were so big that I left very satisfied. The taste was very fresh and overall I'd highly recommend it!

Chris Pagoria

Google
Probably the best outside patio in Boulder. The whole restaurant has an indoor outdoor feeling

Google
I thought this place had great food and an interesting atmosphere! Okay, the place is not fancy by any means, but the almost shanty-like appearance gives it that hole-in-the-wall feel that comes with so many of the best local restaurants in the U.S.! The table salsa was surprisingly flavorful and spicy. The meals were nicely presented and tasty. The staff was very friendly, and the quality of service was great! It's now on my list of Mexican-food favorites in the Boulder region!

Evan Kelly

Google
Tacos Al pastor. Delicious. Remodel is nice and the food is as good as it was before the fire.

Yelp
Lovely remodel from the ashes after a fire there 2 years ago. Excellent service from friendly brothers team. Marg was very good. Food excellent. Open to the outdoors with tables out and in. Light and airy. Highly recommend. We will make this a regular dinner spot.

Yelp
Jean today was the best! First time at this North Boulder restaurant and it was tasty! Location is right off Broadway in a cool Boho art district thing. Other shops around too and they have a nice big patio, and a cool bar window table thing! Interior is best described as beach house which is a cool vibe on a sunny day. Lots of beer and drink options and happy hour, I just got a Tecate after my hike but I'll try a Marg next! They have a lot of options food wise but I went conservative with a chicken smothered burrito and enjoyed it! I'd recommend getting the sour cream and guac, and I got some rice on the side too. Free chips & salsa which is awesome! Everything tasted homemade and filling, and the sauces were flavorful with a zing but not overly spicy. Jean was very nice and service was great, very fast and attentive. Can't wait to go again and try something new!

Yelp
Food is good. Margaritas are good. Patio is good. But seeing a patron drop their plate down in the gravel of the patio so their German Shepard could clean it off has really put me out of the wapo mood.

Yelp
Probably top 3 patios in boulder. The entire restaurant kind of has an indoor outdoor feel. Good salsa, good food. Staff is friendly, nice neighborhood stop

Yelp
Felt lucky to get a table tiny inside.. outdoor patio doubles there space, but it was raining! Started with a giant margarita and guacamole which was served in an edible pastry cup. I had carnitas tacos which were delicious and easily shareable as there were 4 of them. Saw fajitas going to another table.. will order those next time as they looked fabulous! Had churros with ice cream for dessert.. that too had a lovely presentation and was delicious. I will be back for more!

Taylor B.

Yelp
I ordered the oh my god burrito, with steak. I asked for extra steak. There was maybe 1.5 small scoops of steak in the burrito. It was 90% rice, 8% beans and 2% steak for $18. What a ripoff!

Yelp
5 stars for sure. They are friendly guys who are attentive, but better lighting and sound dampening are needed. Congrats on the new building! New and more current photos are needed.

Debbie T.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in Boulder. The new building is awesome. Can't wait to come here when it's warm enough to sit in the amazing outdoor patio.

Julie K.

Yelp
Great outdoor seating on a sunny day. Impressive job in the rebuild after the fire. Food and drinks are still delicious and affordable. Our favorite place to eat in North Boulder.

Craig B.

Yelp
Indoor ambiance I would describe as spartan at best, but we came here for the food. I had a burrito which was sumptuous by anyone's standards and the margaritas were definitely stiff Staff was very attentive and friendly on a very busy Sunday night

Elena N.

Yelp
Wapos located in north Boulder has excellent Mexican food and they serve plenty of it ! Service is excellent. Great happy hour all day on Monday's and everyday other day at 5:00 pm! Fun casual environment! Give it a try !

Harold B.

Yelp
This was the finest and friendliest cantina north boulder has ever seen. Any chance 4929 will ever return to glory?

Yelp
Just stop reading and head here asap! Amazing authentic Mexican food!

Yelp
Don't be put off by this little shack of a restaurant, the food is really good and service friendly. The inside is quite small, but they have a fun covered patio. We started with yummy chips and salsa, and house margaritas. The margs were the way I like them, not too sweet and strong enough. My husband was pleased with his enchiladas and I absolutely loved my mole carnitas. That mexican chocolate sauce was quite addictive! We ended this good dinner with a flan, simple but very satisfying. Great hidden little gem in North Boulder!

Yelp
Yum!!! I mean, unexpectedly delicious authentic tacos. Nothing bad to say. We were in the area and it was close by. We were hungry. It was exceptional! Definitely check out Wapos if you're in Boulder, passing through, or even take a special trip because it was worth it!

Yelp
Depending on how familiar you are with Boulder, restaurants come and go all the time here, like some only stick around for a few months. The reason why I mention that is because I really don't go to new places unless they have been there long enough. I want to know the place is well established and they are no longer figuring things out. Wapos has been there for years now and I have held off long enough but it comes up in conversations all the time and people recommend it, even over some of the other well known Mexican Restaurants that claim to be authentic. So here I am... got a coin represato magarita and now I am enjoying the chips and salsa. The salsa is pretty spicy which I like and the chips are not too salty which is a plus. I can always add salt if I need it. The margarita came out really fast. Cameron is a great server which I have had the pleasure of already having at another restaurant. I have about 10 years of restaurant experience front and back of house so I am very picky on how food is cooked, displayed and is served. The menu is pretty big with lots of choices, even breakfast all day. By the way they have Flan!! Lol well here I am a day later and still writing my review... it was great!!! I ate everything, forgot my review even and came back to it wondering why I didn't finish it. Must have been a strong margarita! Anyhow I was very happy with everything, and I ordered a verde burrito which filled me up and I had leftovers I hope to own my own restaurant someday so I am constantly keeping notes on what works or doesn't. So far Wapos is good and I have no complains, just good things and stuff expected of a Mexican Restaurant. Wapos is affordable, not too expensive which is nice, cause some of these places are charging like $15 for just chips and salsa, so this is comfortable, especially with free chips and salsa.

Yelp
"Best salsa in Boulder!" "Best Huevos Rancheros in Boulder!" Its true. I love this place. It is authentic, delicious, spicy, and while they serve up some wonderful meat options I am particularly stoked they are vegetarian friendly. Yes proper vegetarian green chilie!!!!! OMG If you are looking for the real deal, Wapos is a hidden gem at the top of North Broadway. You know you are supporting real families directly when you dine here.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious authentic Mexican food! I come here all the time and they're always really sweet and welcoming. Also their chips and salsa is also some of the best in Boulder (in my Irish opinion).
google avatar

Weston H.

Yelp
Our favorite hole-in-wall! VERY local and friendly. We would recommend to everyone, check this place out!

Hugo E.

Yelp
Great dining experience. Quality food and service. A fire has closed the Boulder location. I can't wait for them to reopen.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't let the divey exterior fool you. It's a delicious hidden gem in north Boulder. Chunky fresh salsa with a kick. The chili relleno is small, but oozes with cheese and is drenched in a flavorful spicy sauce. If you're a mole fan I recommend it. I've been here multiple times and everything has been great: simple, spicy, flavorful.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! We come here at least once a week. Food is very good, ambience is cute, service is fast and extremely friendly, covid practices in place. Highly recommend the "disco tacos".
google avatar

Yelp
Really fun atmosphere and environment full of Boulder locals. A welcome change to the restaurants downtown with a large outdoor seating area for dining al fresco on nice days. I am a total sucker for restaurant booth seating AND outdoor patios and this place has both. Loved the house salsa and strong coin style margaritas. Vegetarian friendly menu with veggie green chili. Roberto is a great host and can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
We always enjoy ourselves here. Margaritas are delish and the food is tasty. Love the eclectic environment here on the edge of town. Feels like a hidden secret.

Megan W.

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a Friday night because the food smelled amazing when we walked by. They were incredibly busy but we were seated pretty quick. You get complimentary chips and salsa when you sit so we munched away while looking at the menu. This is where the night took a turn though. We probably sat there for 15 to 20 minutes just waiting for our waiter, no waters, not greeting or be with you a minute. We eventually got up and left. Would not bother going back. Hopefully they do better.

Yelp
Decent food big portions good guac great service Hubby liked the fish tacos Son liked the steak tacos Low key and fun vibe They serve drinks with straws and use styrofoam to go containers, so ask for no straws and a big sheet of foil to wrap your take home items Will visit again.

Yelp
Absolute savagery. I honestly leave this place speechless every time. The satisfaction of a consistent warm corn tortilla and actively steaming fajita veggies brings me so much joy during these hard inconsistent times. Thank you wapos for your pitchers and the crisp salt rim, it's honestly so good I was over 30 minutes late to work to finish you with some friends. WAPOS staff is a dream team, hope this restaurant outlives me.

Monica R.

Yelp
Delicious!! We stopped in randomly one day on the way to another outing and we're so pleased!

Brecken R.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing food. -1 because we drove 40 minutes to eat here and you were closed. Please update business hours online if you won't be open!!!

Courtney C.

Yelp
BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN BOULDER PERIOD. Roberto is the nicest man in the world (pictured) and knows how to take care of his guests! We had the ice cream nachos, best dessert I have EVER had in my life, Roberto makes them amazing.

Bob T.

Yelp
My Daughter lives in Boulder We visit my daughter 5 times a year Wapos is one of our go to restaurants each time we visit. All the food is great. I really enjoy the enchiladas.
google avatar

Thighmaster M.

Yelp
We have been coming to this spot on the map for 30+ years, and while the decor has not changed and is perhaps a bit worse for the wear, it seems the current owners have figured out decent food vs price balance. Decent salsa and margs too.
google avatar

Deb K.

Yelp
Ceviche, guacamole and chips with my dog outside. Amazing service and I love the down to earth atmosphere.

Yelp
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Wapos. What a gem. Our server was Juan who happened to be co-owner (along with his wife). He told us they opened it 7 years ago in north Boulder and have one in Lafayette too. We sat in their outside enclosed and heated patio which was nice and warm even though it was 30 outside. The chips had just the right amount of chispiness and freshness, the salsa had excellent flavor and some hot spiciness but not too much. Juan told use the chili verde is very spicy if you want that. We had the "Enchiladas Jalisco" and a "Al Pastor Burrito" (each about $10.50), both had nice presentation on the plate were served warm, and were flavorful and filling. Even topped off the meal with an order of Sopapillas for $4.25. We'll be going again and will invite our friends too.

Joe G.

Yelp
We sat outside with a group of 8. Old metal table with very uncomfortable chairs. We received chips and salsa, but no one came to take our drink order for about 15 minutes. After we received our drinks, another 15 minutes before someone came to take our dinner order. Food is priced at average $12 to $16 for entrees, but when the food came, the entrees were very small. It took about 20 minutes for our food to come after we ordered. Had a bottle of beer, should have asked for price before hand, but did not, was charged $7 for a bottle of beer. Then because of the group of 8, we were automatically charged an 18% service charge, which normally would be OK if the service wasn't so bad.

Yelp
While the exterior is not the most inviting, inside you will find an extremely warm, welcoming, and authentic environment with plenty of outdoor/open-air seating. The chips and salsa were freshly made and delicious. Margaritas were tasty and served quickly. The enchiladas camarones and Jalisco enchiladas were very authentic and delicious in fresh tortillas. The service was excellent and the food is incredible. Also very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend Wapos to anyone looking for authentic Mexican cuisine.

Yelp
I have been visiting Boulder for the last three years and never been here even though it is less than 3 minutes walk from the hotel!! That changed tonight This place is as authentic as you can get. Ran by true Mexicans, who can't do enough for you the food is generous, tasty and filling. The tequila chicken is outstanding !! The location is a true hole the a wall joint, nothing swanky but clean and functional. Sit at the bar and watch the kitchen and busyness of the barren making the house margaritas. Or if there are 4 or more there is the outside patio. It may look downbeat. But this is true Mexican food at its best. Defiantly one to try if your in town.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
This is the crown jewel of Mexican food, it's appearance is exactly what you want in a Mexican restaurant. Roberto makes the best margaritas ever! I'm afraid people will actually go there and ruin the great experience of this place. I love this place, no matter what anyone else says. This place is a true gem.
google avatar

Hallie S.

Yelp
Yum this place is so good. They have the best chili rellenos and margarita pitchers. Such a hidden gem, this place is worth traveling across town for. The patio is nice it's inside/outside so your protected by the elements but still feel like you're dining outside.

Yelp
Great Mexican joint! Lovely food... the chicken tequila was very nice and so is the salad... great service and great pricing too... try the skinny margarita! Sangria is fantastic too... I am gonna stay in the hotel next to this place every time I am in boulder just so that I can try this place again... great joint to be in.

Yelp
Went for a quick lunch while staying at a nearby hotel with our kids. Very friendly service, great food and drinks. I had the chicken mole and my kids split the carnitas tacos. The salsa was tasty with just the right amount of heat, and the guac appetizer served inside a small bowl made of a taco shell was delicious with plenty of onion, tomato and seasoning. I tend to add salt when my food lacks flavor but had no need for any of the dishes served. Great meal!
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Ordered the tamale plate. Tamale was liquidy and cut up. Refried beans were too salty. Overall not a terrible price for expensive, expensive Boulder but not particularly appetizing either.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This is no doubt one of the best places to eat in Boulder. It never disappoints. Our servers are ALWAYS kind and go the extra mile to try and make it a great experience. Our server recommended the skinny margarita pitcher and it was so good!!! And I always get the "pregnant burrito" and it always tastes incredible!!!! Would recommend this to everyone and everyone if you're in the mood for an awesome dinner in a great atmosphere!
google avatar

Shelley N.

Yelp
Excellent lunch at Wapos. Everyone is very friendly. Carnitas is the house specialty. It is very good. We had the Mucho Nacho, Tortilla soup, and Carnitas taco and cheese enchilada. Everything was excellent! I had the Skinny Margarita; well honestly after they first I had a second so I had 2. It also was very good! Definitely come to Wapos!
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Food was good but service was awful. Business trip, we asked for separate checks before ordering, because we need reimbursement, all seemed fine. When we were done, we got one check. They would not decide for us. Last trip to this place. Plenty of other business would be willing to work with us. Between 8 of us, we had a mix of everything. Salsa was really good. I had CHILE RELLENO very spicy.
google avatar

Reba C.

Yelp
Wapos is as authentic as Mexican gets while still being on this side of the border. The staff is friendly and the food is made with excellence.
google avatar

Jaime O.

Yelp
Wapos is such a cool place! Very clean and a great vibe. The servers are sooo nice and I've always had unbelievable service here. The chips and salsa are great. The outside patio is fun. I like this restaurant because it is very laid-back, and is not pretentious whatsoever... That is something I always look for when I look at peoples reviews... I hate an upscale Mexican or Asian restaurant! I feel like it takes away from the fun for some reason! Granted, Mexican is not my favorite cuisine, but I always feel like I eat something enjoyable at Wapos and go home happy. The patio is nice and just a chill spot!
google avatar

Maggie R.

Yelp
LOVE. The people in here definitely make the experience. Super friendly and ready to help with whatever you need. The food is so comforting and delicious. I love their inside/outside patio area which gives this place great added charm.

Yelp
I really want to like Wapos. I love the idea of a cool hole in the wall Mexican place in a sea of super expensive restaurants in Boulder, but it disappoints every time. I recently went in with a large group (15) and waited 2 hours for food, we're talking melted cheese on tortillas and some beans, nothing fancy. Don't even get me started on drinks. After waiting way too long, a few of us tried ordering from the bar (sounds like a reasonable idea, right?), and were turned away, told that we could only order through our server. The owner completely ignored our table, never once came and apologized, nor gave a good reason why it was taking so long. I even saw him bark at his servers a few times, not cool to do this in public. Two members of our group showed up an hour after we sat down and were told that they could not order food (at 8pm) because they had run out. What kind of restaurant runs out of food? The food was fine, but by the time we got it, all we wanted to do was leave.
