WG Pizzas - Review - Avondale - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Chicago’s streets are practically paved with tavern-style pizza. To stand out, a spot needs to be pretty special. WG, a suburban transplant operating out of a takeout-only kitchen in Avondale, is good, but not great. You won’t be disappointed if one of these pies shows up at your house, but they’re not worth going out of your way for. WG’s pizza has a buttery cracker crust that holds up well to toppings. With the exception of the very edges, the crust is more chewy than crispy, likely due to a thick blanket of cheese on every pie. It tastes like buttered toast, and makes a delightful vehicle for the creative topping combos happening here. Those unexpected options are what WG does best—like italian beef with spicy giardiniera, or the “black and white,” a sauceless little number topped with parmesan and balsamic. Stick with the fun stuff if you’re going to order from here. But with so many other spots in Chicago, including places where you can sit down and have a drink with your just-fine pizza, there’s really no reason to. Food Rundown photo credit: Adrian Kane Black & White The buttery crust really shines in this simple, sauceless pie. The dough has a pseudo-lamination thing happening, reminiscent of the inside of a croissant. That flavor combined with parmesan and balsamic is a nice counterpoint. photo credit: Adrian Kane Italian Beef We’re fans of this one. It’s covered in a generous amount of beef, and the giardiniera is truly very spicy. It doesn’t taste like a pizza so much as an italian beef on a giant cracker, and we’re here for it. photo credit: Adrian Kane Pepperoni This is a boring pie. The sweet tomato sauce probably tastes perfectly fine, but no one will ever know because it’s overwhelmed with a mattress of mozzarella. WG forgoes crispy pepperoni cups for flaccid discs and there’s no char in sight. Plenty of tavern-style spots make the same decision (Phil’s comes to mind), but the mild tomato base and thick blanket of cheese cover up any flavor." - Adrian Kane

Delicious, crispy, thin tavern-style pizza! I tried the vodka sauce pizza. Excited to have them in the neighborhood!

Saw the write up on this place on block club so I stopped in. The service was great and the staff is super sweet. It’s listed as tavern style pizza, but it ended up actually closer to thin crust which is not a problem at all because it was very good pizza. I will be going back for more!

So happy to have WG in the neighborhood. Fast and really good tavern style. Hope they keep the vodka sauce pizza on the permanent menu. We’ve had it twice in two weeks.

I loved it so much I learned how to spell “giardiniera” just to write this review. We got it delivered—large cheese with mild giardiniera, cooked well done. Perfect tavern style pizza. I already forget how to spell giardenerra.

Went last night to the grand opening. Some of the best thin crust I’ve had in the city. So excited to have them in my neighborhood!

Super great pizza! Nice and crispy and perfect tavern style. Only suggestion is to add a 16 inch option.

Watched a promo on WGN and based on the interview assumed they were opening a pizzeria in Avondale, not the case. Instead they offer pizzas through the ghost kitchen next to the Jewel at this address. The ghost kitchen currently offers food from a number of different eateries and they can be hit or miss. The style is thin and tavern style so it's light on the belly. Side note: Due to its size and how light it is. If you have a gathering of healthy appetites, you might like to get three pizzas or two and a salad. We tried two pies & a Ceasar salad. One with sausage & perpperoncinis and the other plain cheese with extra sauce. (Their red sauce has a slight sweetness which is more pronounced if having extra sauce) I enjoyed the cheese more. Maybe if we tried one of their specialties with more toppings I may have been more enamored. I dunno. When eating tavern or extremely thin pizza, it requires a good sauce and minimal toppings to elevate. Too many toppings would weigh it down. I'm not sure whether I need to have this again. In this area of Chicago there are many pizzerias and if you ask, many would make a thinner crust too. Since they're new, ordering online was not simple. Between two iPhones, my sis and her hubs' tried unsuccessfully using their website. Due to unsuccessful tries they were ready to call a competitor. It's janky, the script wasn't taking address or pay info correctly. I decided to try using a third party site through Doordash(web) for a pickup, using my Android. It required saving a CC on file which I dislike doing (since many companies get hacked these days) but by ordering this way, it was accepted and the order hot & ready within thirty minutes.

Worst experience ever. There's literally zero information given on how to pick up your pizza except for an address. When you get there its some weird Uber Eats pick up station. Everyone's using codes to pick up there food from lockers except, I never got a text or email with any information at all. After about 15mins of faild attempts to get in contact with WG Pizza regarding the situation, finally a kid popped his head out from behind a window. I told him I was looking for my pizza & he said, "oh yeah, I have it"... it was cold by the time I got it & I still don't understand why I didn't get not 1 text or email regarding pick up information. Terrible. Never again

Yelp
Not only was the pizza really good but they offered to remake it for free when the Uber driver screwed up the order, even though it wasn't even their fault. Great food, great service, this might be my new go to spot.

Yelp
I haven't had a pizza featuring balsamic since the closure of the illustrious Barneys in Gold Coast. While this isn't as good it's still a good pie. Cracker thin which evokes the tavern style that Chicago is known for. I'm glad that I chose the Parmesan & garlic butter rolls because twas the star of the show. Extremely soft almost to the texture of gooey bread & that sauce was truly amongst some of the best I've had albeit being sweet.

Yelp
I cannot stop eating the Italian Beef & Hot Gardiniera pizza. I literally have dreams about it. We ordered 2 last night and they were perfect. We ordered it well done and it was so crispy and delicious. I have actually stopped ordering pizza from anywhere else because it just doesn't compare. If you are reading this review you need to order their pizza immediately. P.s. we also got the chopped salad as well and it was AMAZING! We ate it in 2 seconds and forgot to take a picture, oops.

Yelp
My fiancee and I love this place! We have already gone 3 times since they opened. Best gluten free pizza in the city!
