WG Pizzas - Review - Avondale - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Chicago’s streets are practically paved with tavern-style pizza. To stand out, a spot needs to be pretty special. WG, a suburban transplant operating out of a takeout-only kitchen in Avondale, is good, but not great. You won’t be disappointed if one of these pies shows up at your house, but they’re not worth going out of your way for. WG’s pizza has a buttery cracker crust that holds up well to toppings. With the exception of the very edges, the crust is more chewy than crispy, likely due to a thick blanket of cheese on every pie. It tastes like buttered toast, and makes a delightful vehicle for the creative topping combos happening here. Those unexpected options are what WG does best—like italian beef with spicy giardiniera, or the “black and white,” a sauceless little number topped with parmesan and balsamic. Stick with the fun stuff if you’re going to order from here. But with so many other spots in Chicago, including places where you can sit down and have a drink with your just-fine pizza, there’s really no reason to. Food Rundown Black & White The buttery crust really shines in this simple, sauceless pie. The dough has a pseudo-lamination thing happening, reminiscent of the inside of a croissant. That flavor combined with parmesan and balsamic is a nice counterpoint. photo credit: Adrian Kane Italian Beef We’re fans of this one. It’s covered in a generous amount of beef, and the giardiniera is truly very spicy. It doesn’t taste like a pizza so much as an italian beef on a giant cracker, and we’re here for it. photo credit: Adrian Kane Pepperoni This is a boring pie. The sweet tomato sauce probably tastes perfectly fine, but no one will ever know because it’s overwhelmed with a mattress of mozzarella. WG forgoes crispy pepperoni cups for flaccid discs and there’s no char in sight. Plenty of tavern-style spots make the same decision (Phil’s comes to mind), but the mild tomato base and thick blanket of cheese cover up any flavor. photo credit: Adrian Kane" - Adrian Kane

How Alex’s Washington Gardens Evolved to WG Pizzas | Eater Chicago

"After owners siblings Ben and Jessie Glazer and husband-and-wife team Michael and Franny Kaulentis took over in 2019 and recently underwent a branding makeover (shortening the original name to WG Pizzas), the operation expanded into Chicago in 2024 by opening inside an Avondale ghost kitchen to introduce city dwellers to their pies. The Glazers have been scouting Chicago locations with plans to open multiple restaurants to “spread the gospel of tavern-style pizza across the country,” while acknowledging that the new locations won’t replicate the original Highwood spot: “I don’t think I can recreate this, this is a special place,” Glazer says. Ben, who grew up on the North Shore and also spent years playing music (he recalls touring Big Ten schools and opening for acts such as OAR), reflects that “I feel like I’ve lived two lives,” saying he feels the same adrenaline running a restaurant as he did performing. Starting next month, the brand will feature collaborations with high-profile chefs: Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises chef Max Robbins will debut a pizza with vodka sauce, Calabrian chili, basil, smoked mozzarella, and Parmesan in February; Won Kim of Kimski and Lilac Tiger will follow with a pizza in March; and Javauneeka Jacobs of Rick Bayless’s Frontera Grill is up in April. The Chicago location is listed at 3517 N. Spaulding Avenue and is available for pickup or delivery via third-party services." - Ashok Selvam

Google
New to the city tavern style pizza spot that has an iconic history in Chicago’s north shore suburbs is now open. Located on Southport just north of Diversey, this dine in, carryout and delivery pizza restaurant makes it easy to grab your dinner and go. Sauce, crust and caesar salad dressing are homemade. Loved the cheese pizza, Caesar salad and garlicky buttery flaky rolls. Stop by and see for yourself.

Recently dined in at WG Pizzas after having their pizza several times delivered and at pop ups. The space is super clean and casual. Easy to stop in for a quick bite or carry out. We had the black and white pizza and holy crap. SO delicious. We also did the pizza a la vodka which was equally delicious. I love a thin tavern style crust and this place nails it! The chopped salad is super generous and can feed at least 4 people along with your pizza. Veggies are chopped perfectly imo and super fresh, great dressing too. Will definitely order again!

Delicious, crispy, thin tavern-style pizza! I tried the vodka sauce pizza. Excited to have them in the neighborhood!

10/10 🍕 We got two pizzas - the vodka which was our favorite and the italian sausage. The pizza was thin with a great crispy crunchy crust. Also, the caesar salad was great with very fresh romaine lettuce and large portion good enough for 2 people. Will be back for sure!

I loved it so much I learned how to spell “giardiniera” just to write this review. We got it delivered—large cheese with mild giardiniera, cooked well done. Perfect tavern style pizza. I already forget how to spell giardenerra.

So happy to have WG in the neighborhood. Fast and really good tavern style. Hope they keep the vodka sauce pizza on the permanent menu. We’ve had it twice in two weeks.

Saw the write up on this place on block club so I stopped in. The service was great and the staff is super sweet. It’s listed as tavern style pizza, but it ended up actually closer to thin crust which is not a problem at all because it was very good pizza. I will be going back for more!

Great little spot! The pizza was good and the garlic bread was amazing. Ask for extra dipping sauce, it’s worth it.

Yelp
Have picked up pizzas a few times now. Most have been great, only one I didn't like. It's super thin crust, tavern style pizzas - think Pat's. Vodka pizza with pepperoni - good but definitely needed to add the pepperoni to it to make it worthwhile/elevate it. Black & White pizza - this is the only one I didn't like, definitely not my kind of pizza. Steakhouse Pizza (of the month) - amazing pizza with beef sausages and horseradish cheese. Incredible idea and fantastic pizza. Pepperoni & Honey - also good, popular style of late but well done. Also really love that parmesan bread! Quickly becoming our preferred last-minute/convenient pizza option.

Yelp
Cute local, family-owned and operated pizza shop! There is limited seating upstairs or you can take it to go. They have great super-thin tavern style pizza, square cut of course! I also really liked the garlic bread, so delicious! We tried the vodka sauce pizza, which was a celebrity chef collab that stayed on the menu it was so good! I think it's fun that they have rotating specialty flavors, keeps it interesting. Portions are great value for the size. Service was awesome, you can tell they really care and have all the recs for you. Definitely recommend

Yelp
I haven't had a pizza featuring balsamic since the closure of the illustrious Barneys in Gold Coast. While this isn't as good it's still a good pie. Cracker thin which evokes the tavern style that Chicago is known for. I'm glad that I chose the Parmesan & garlic butter rolls because twas the star of the show. Extremely soft almost to the texture of gooey bread & that sauce was truly amongst some of the best I've had albeit being sweet.

Yelp
I cannot stop eating the Italian Beef & Hot Gardiniera pizza. I literally have dreams about it. We ordered 2 last night and they were perfect. We ordered it well done and it was so crispy and delicious. I have actually stopped ordering pizza from anywhere else because it just doesn't compare. If you are reading this review you need to order their pizza immediately. P.s. we also got the chopped salad as well and it was AMAZING! We ate it in 2 seconds and forgot to take a picture, oops.

Yelp
Not only was the pizza really good but they offered to remake it for free when the Uber driver screwed up the order, even though it wasn't even their fault. Great food, great service, this might be my new go to spot.

Yelp
My fiancee and I love this place! We have already gone 3 times since they opened. Best gluten free pizza in the city!
