I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Washington Square Diner. The lack of good customer service significantly impacted my overall impression of the establishment. Upon entering with my group of six people at 11 PM, we were immediately bombarded with reminders that the diner closed at midnight. This repetitive information became quite frustrating.
When we inquired about the possibility of accommodating our party, we were told that they could indeed accommodate us but would not be able to seat six people. This contradiction left us perplexed and questioning the logic behind their statement. To make matters worse, the waiter began berating us with condescending remarks such as "what don't you understand" and "are you listening to me?". It was completely uncalled for and only served to worsen the situation.
Despite the unpleasantness, we decided to stay solely because one of my friends highly recommended the food, we had the munchies and we were craving a meal. I understand that working as waitstaff can be challenging, especially after a difficult night, but taking it out on innocent customers is not justifiable and only hurts their chances of receiving a decent tip.
Unfortunately, the same waiter ended up serving our table. To accommodate our group, we split into two tables with three people each and proceeded to look at the menu. Despite the disappointing customer service, the Panini sandwiches came highly recommended and, surprisingly, they did not disappoint. I opted for the Chipotle Chicken Panini, which was advertised as such, but to my confusion, the waiter informed me that they did not have chipotle sauce or chipotle mayo. How can it be called a chipotle chicken Panini if it lacks the key ingredients? However, given my state at the time, I was too high to fully process this discrepancy. The sandwich itself consisted of grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, bacon, avocado, and chipotle sauce that I had to make myself. I also ordered the onion rings, which were quite delicious.
Unfortunately, the waiter continued to ask offensive questions that made us feel singled out and uncomfortable. Maybe they had issues with customers leaving without paying, but targeting a group of queer, black, and brown trans people with questions about payment was completely unnecessary and felt discriminatory. As a result, we unanimously agreed to split the bill and forgo leaving a substantial tip, as many individuals in our group did not feel inclined to do so.
Despite the unprofessional and phobic service, I still decided to leave a tip out of courtesy. The waiter's attitude and energy towards the white customers that arrived after us was noticeably different. It was disheartening to witness such favoritism and lack of equality in their service. It further reinforced my decision to never return to this diner, as it is evident that they prioritize certain customers over others. The discriminatory treatment towards us, combined with the overall unprofessional service, left a lasting negative impression.
