Wawa’s Latest D.C. Shop for Subs and Coffee Opens in Thomas Circle | Eater DC

"I noted that Wawa, the ubiquitous roadside fixture that fuels fans with subs, pretzels, and caffeine, opened its fifth D.C. location this morning at 1 Thomas Circle NW; the new 24/7 store moved into the space formerly occupied by the West Wing Cafe. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the chain’s typically over-the-top grand opening festivities were pared back to a “social distancing ribbon cutting” aired on social media, and the 900-location brand kicked off its famed opening-week promo — free, any-size coffee — through Sunday, August 9. The addition follows a short-lived, year-old Adams Morgan outpost that shuttered last month; Wawa made its D.C. debut in 2017 with a jumbo-sized Dupont Circle location and has long-term plans to blanket the city with 30 to 50 locations." - Tierney Plumb

Google
While the facility was nice. The staff was so busy that I order got missed. Placed it at 1:33 and by 2:15 I was tired and asked for a refund. Laila, the service rep was sweet and apologetic but still waiting 45 minutes as everyone else got their food was disappointing to say the least.

Google
Broken self checkout machines and no bathroom access. On several recent visits, there haven’t been enough people working here to efficiently serve the volume of customers. The store seemed well-stocked though.

I explained to support that I didn’t receive my order and the dasher didn’t leave a photo of it. I told both Doordash and Wawa that I didn’t receive my order and they still refused to give me my refund. That’s pretty much theft at that point because you’re really telling me I can’t receive my money back after I didn’t receive it and have proof that I didn’t. The dasher that delivered my order also sat in front of my house for over 10 mins just to drive away and I left a tip and all that. Avoid this Wawa and Doordash at all costs. They are thieves. I will report everything and they won’t be getting another cent from me ever

Their desserts are the perfect way to end a meal sweet but not overwhelming.

I was going around trying to find pizza to have for dinner until I found this place. I wouldn’t say that this place is exactly clean and organized. The staff was okay. I wasn’t too happy with people standing outside of the door. As I read through the reviews, I guess I need to be more careful.

Google
You get what you expect from this city Wawa: chaos usually. I’m used to the suburban wawas so used to a different vibe. Would not go here on a Saturday night. They barely tried to make my hoagie, missing key ingredients, and it took a very long time. That said, it is a staple and in a good location if you’re in a dire situation.

Google
Actually never heard of a wawa with no public restroom. 2 of us needed to go pretty badly and despite being paying customers were denied ability to use rest room. When asked where we can go also received no answer saying they don't know.

Yelp
The sheer fact that this Wawa is open 24/7 in this part of the city equates to a 4-star rating for any out-of-towners staying in one of the nearby hotels. It's got you covered with the basics - coffee, grab-and-go food and snacks, etc. However, to be fair, I selected 3-star as a Wawa. It's fine. You can enter, do self-checkout, and not have to interact with anyone. It's only if you need to interact with someone where there could be an issue, and it also depends on when (from what I observed whenever I would duck in here for this and for that). I can say that each time I had a good experience here during my last stay in Logan Circle in D.C.

Yelp
Clean store, well organized, easy to find what I need, and conveniently located right on Thomas Circle. No dedicated parking of course because it's in the city but there is 2-hour street parking if you can find it. Near McPherson Metro. Cashier was friendly and efficient. Checkout was a breeze. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
I love Wawa. Like, love. This location has lots of choices for being a smaller, in-city store. But it's kinda chaotic and messy. Employees are just going through the motions. Made-to-order drinks and food good but not as yummy as other locations.

Yelp
This was an interesting experience because I have never ordered food from a screen. I had to select my food, in this case a sandwich, prepared to my specifications. After following the prompts, The screen gave me a number on a piece of paper. When my number was called I collected my sandwich from one station and paid the cashier at another station. I'll be better at it next time. The sandwich was great!

Yelp
It is a rainy Friday morning. Only one person was checking people out and she was busy texting on the side instead of ringing up customers who are trying to pay.

Yelp
I love Wawa. Everything about it. It is heaven. Italian combo is out of this world. When you go there you should eat

Yelp
I was staying at a nearby hotel for work and since the options are limited without breaking the bank I decided to go to WaWa. I was in the mood for a salad and when I saw they didn't offer the Southwest Chicken Salad, I opted for the Crispy Chicken BLT. Ordered my salad with one add on and got all the way to my room to discover they left out the most important ingredient in the salad . . . THE BACON! Funny I saw the manager making my salad, but of course I only discovered this mishap once I started to eat it. It was still tasty nonetheless but bacon surely would've been the highlight with each bite. The store was clean, crowded, and with very few staff working. I was in the store for a least 20+ mins for a salad. I work next door to a WaWa and it's a vast difference in each store. I guess I was expecting a swifter experience like I have at other locations, but this one missed the mark.

Yelp
They don't sell gas here of course since it's in a building in downtown DC. This isn't the largest Wawa I've ever seen but they seem to have all the usual offerings. This place gets it done if you're in the area and need something from Wawa.

Yelp
I'm going to miss this place especially the refresher drinks and UTZ chips. The employees are so wonderful!

Yelp
I have NO complaints. So I guess I need to take it for what it is, Wawa, not a Michelin star restaurant. We are staying across the street at the Residence Inn, and know this is an easy, quick place for a sandwich to go. We ordered our 3 sandwiches, and they all came quick, the place was clean and the people working there were SUPER nice. They were out of yellow mustard, and some was found for our last sandwich. I am sure we will get another sandwich 'on the go' there.

Yelp
The 2nd Wawa in DC! Yay! You know how excited I am... it's like a little of the country in the city!!! I grew up in Delaware so there are Wawa's everywhere & royal farm, lol. The only complaint here is the location, parking is difficult and it's the pandemic, so I did assume everyone is working from home. I had to circulate the block couple times just to fine parking! But it's the city what do you expect! I can't wait to Wawa come to the NE part of the city... then it'll be on and popping!

Yelp
Living near Philadelphia for years made me a WaWa loyalist, but I've been disappointed by the franchises in DC. This one's a standout in terms of poor service, bad food, and incompetent staff. A quick visit for a breakfast sandwich led to a 15-minute wait as nobody actually put the sandwich together - and, when I asked for an update, staff suggested that they never got the order. (A neat trick, since they did give me the coffee I'd ordered.) As I waited, multiple other customers came to return flawed orders, with the wrong meat or wrong bread. Asking for a refund meant another long wait, as the manager dealt with other customers, whose orders were also botched. Skip this location, and maybe skip all the DC locations. I can't find one with a staff that puts in any effort.

Yelp
They do a pretty good job here -- some of the employees have great personalities! Mama Rose especially!! I wish they could do something about the beggars holding the door open and expecting money - they are definitely a draw back as they can be mouthy and intimidating.

Yelp
I love being in Wawa territory! We don't have it in NYC which is crazy - we need one! This Wawa was very clean with friendly staff. I ordered a 4 inch hoagie, which is the perfect size for a snack when I knew I had a long period between lunch and dinner but didn't want to fill up. I ordered a turkey hoagie with tomato, provolone, and mayo and it was toasted to perfection. I love that you can pay on the app. I also got their mango dragon fruit drink and it was very refreshing. Great stop for a quick snack.

Yelp
I always hear about wawa and their amazing sandwiches, but i never tried it because i live in nyc, and i don't drive. Lol. I went to DC for the weekend, and it just so happened to have a wawa right downstairs from our hotel, which was open 24 hours. Score! I was able to try 2 sandwiches, and they were both bomb! The first sandwich i had to take back because they didn't make it correctly, but it was fixed fast. It had everything else i needed, water, fountain drinks and snacks. So coming home from a bar or a club would be great because they serve food all night. I would definitely stop at a wawa if i ever get hungry on the road and i see one. Can't go wrong with them.

Yelp
Love their milkshakes and burritos i but they run out sometimes, hope they stock more ingredients so they never go out of stock!

Yelp
Cashiers most really hate their jobs there! So mean, so ignorant. Of course super lazy and clumsy!

Yelp
Today marks the grand opening of the Thomas Circle Wawa. There are a couple of grand opening specials - $1.99 hand spun milkshakes (16 oz) and $4.99 freshly prepared salads. I tried the coffee milkshake, and it was creamy and yummy with just the right hint of coffee. Sanitizing wipes and sprays were available throughout the register and entrance areas. Bakery items such as their donuts are individually wrapped.

Yelp
I'm so excited to have this Wawa so close! This was my second time in and I have to compliment the employees. Everyone was smiling, very friendly, and I could tell they had smiles under their masks. My food was prepped quickly and accurately, both times. Looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
35 min with an empty store for a non-toasted sandwich and fries! Like really!!?? 0 stars yall slow, unorganized, and pitiful

Baddog66 ..

Yelp
They do the best they can. The food is always made well when it is available. My suggestion is for them to not accept uber eats and other delivery app orders at certain hours. They get swamped and cannot keep up. I just left there after waiting 40 minutes for a sandwich.

Ed B.

Yelp
Not open 24 hours a day, what's the point if they're not open. As a Philadelphian, I'm sad that this awful place is even associated with Philly. Sub par sandwiches and overpriced snacks.

John P.

Yelp
The night manager tried to call me out for not wearing a mask while he....wasn't wearing a mask! Hypocritical Covid bullshit. I stood there and watched him check out 5 people after me, all maskless, he didn't say a word to any of them. People have gotten way to used to the good feeling me they get from making people who they normally can't make do things put on a mask. It was never real to begin with, and it's going away fast. Plus, I'm not working at fucking Wawa, bro. The lastoopol laugh is on you.

Yelp
A welcomed addition to Thomas Circle. The staff and management is great. They handle tons of business especially in the sandwich and custom drink areas, and manage it well. They have served the community through the worst of the pandemic. Yes there's a wait at popular and busy times, but that's because they do a tremendous amount of business. I've been there post-rallies and protest walks, and the store was spacious enough to handle a bus load of people with ease. I come here on a weekly basis, and am never disappointed. The Cuban coffee is a customer favorite and really popular, so I make sure to get it first thing in the morning. The location is best for walking traffic, as parking on Vermont Ave or M Street NW.

Yelp
Goddamn this place sucks. ALWAYS understaffed. Might as well actually go out to eat because if you're thinking you'll just grab something real quick, this is not the place. I'm righting this as I've been waiting 30+ minutes for a goddamn sandwich.

Emily L.

Yelp
I've heard so many good things about Wawa from friends but my experience here was so terrible that I will not be returning. With the closure of the nearby 7-11, this is the only place to get food after ~11pm in the area. We placed an order for a few hot food items, waited 10 min to pay and then another 30 min and our food still wasn't ready. At that point they were still ~10 orders away from our order so we left. They should absolutely not be taking orders if the wait is going to be an hour+. I submitted a request to reimbursement on the Wawa website and received a phone call to remediate where I then spent another 15 min only to be offered a gift card for the food that I didn't receive. Overall super disappointed with both the experience in their store and the remediation process. I'm not one to write bad reviews but this whole experience was so frustrating. I have no idea why people love this place.

Brian D.

Yelp
Cashier charged me like $40 dollars over the price of my stuff when I called to complain they told me to just fight with my bank who did absolutely nothing either. So they scammed me out of money

Kim S.

Yelp
I ordered salad bowl and received spoiled cucumbers and spoiled lettuce-This establishment rushes through everytime. I will not be patronizing this Wawa ever again.

Pat S.

Yelp
The customer service at the store is very poor. The employees walk around ignoring the customers at the counter for extended periods of time. The checkout clerk was rude behaving like he's doing us a favor. The checkout clerk fails to greet or give iContact to the customer and doesn't even acknowledge the present to the customer at the counter and basically does not answer any questions at the checkout counter. This is very inappropriate behavior. I have always had good customer service At all the other Wawa stores I hope your visit over the years. This bad customer service I have only noticed at the store. I'll be frequenting other Wawa stores from now on.

Johnetta G.

Yelp
The 1 Thomas Circle store opened at the end of August 2020 with much pomp and circumstance. It was a long awaited and welcome replacement for The West Wing. Fast forward two month to October 2020 and the store is a huge disappointment. I understand that COVID-19 has impacted the stores deliveries but there's no excuse for running out of products needed to make the menu's signature items. The real ball buster is the condition of the store as it relates to cleanliness. The floor throughout the entire floor is despicable. It looks like it hasn't been swept and mopped throughly since the store opened. It doesn't give a good impression to customers. I am a building maintenance professional. I have a trained-eye and a high expectation of what floors and restrooms in public places should look like. Please make sure someone sweeps and mops the floor every day.

Yelp
forgot two mac n cheeses, rotting cucumber in my salad, no dressing when i paid extra for two, wait was an hour long
