I am no expert when it comes to St. John Parish. In fact, I know very little about this parish named after my patron saint. Not knowing much has never stopped me before, so now that I occasionally work in this area, I decided to explore the restaurants.
Did you know that this part of the world claims to be the andouille Capitol of the world? I probably missed that fun fact in geography class, but people out there are proud of that.
Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse is one of the most well known smokehouses in LaPlace so I figured that was a good place to start.
The drive here was very familiar. If you've ever driven around south Louisiana, it will feel familiar to you too. The building itself does not look fancy, but trust me when I say, it's worth a stop. There was ample parking and an entrance on the side and in the front.
Service was very friendly and I was treated like a local despite being an obvious outsider. The menu is pretty extensive and I decided I wanted to sample a few things. Here's what I ordered:
Chicken and andouille gumbo - Whoa nah! I ordered a cup so it wasn't much, but wowza did it pack some flavor. That andouille added a smokiness not always found in regular sausage gumbo. It was very good. The addition of Tabasco made it even better.
Hog head cheese - They didn't have any of the hot so I ordered the regular. It was the chunkiest, most interesting hog head cheese I've ever had. It came with crackers, but those were unnecessary. It also came with a bowl, yes a bowl, of hot sauce that was necessary. Each bite got dipped and coated and was made even better.
Sausage of the day sampler - When I went the sausage was a turkey sausage served with yellow, and creole mustard. It was decent, but because it was turkey, it was missing that deep smoky flavor and andouille would have. I wouldn't order turkey sausage again.
In closing, Wayne Jacobs Smokehouse is worth a try. My one regret is that I didn't bring an ice chest to work. If I had one I would be eating my own version of andouille gumbo right now.
