I was a little hesitant when my buddy recommended this spot, because of a mediocre DoorDash experience I had several months ago, but I figured I had to give them a fair shot. Sushi is always better when dining in after all. I'm glad I did. The sushi was delicious and the ambiance inside definitely added to our experience. Late 90's and early 00's pop RnB had our table breaking out singing hits from Usher, Mariah Carrey, T-Pain, etc. This review would probably be 3 stars if not for the stellar playlist to be honest.
There were 5 of us and we came in around 3PM so it wasn't very busy. However there was only one server and it did seem that we waited too long to be helped, and in between table visits, as there were only 3/4 tables sat at the time. My friends commented a couple times on the server's demeanor but I think she just wasn't using the "customer service voice" and I don't mind people not being fake nice as long as they aren't rude or mean.
Now for the food. The appetizers were not great. Of the Gyoza, Calamari, and Karaage Chicken, the Gyoza was the only one that wasn't very bland and unmemorable. We ordered some fries too, and those were actually particularly good.
The sushi was great. Donning snarky names like the Ja Roll and We The Best, they were all named after hip hop and RnB artists that matched the catchy playlist. Our favorites were the No Half Steppin and the GOAT rolls. I enjoyed my We The Best roll as well. The sushi selections were a combination of classics and experimental creations put together by the chef, who has been making sushi for close to 20 years, according to the menu.
If you're looking for something fun and new, I'd recommend this spot but skip the appetizers and get an extra roll instead. If you're picky about your sushi and prefer the traditional experience, this might not be the spot for you.
