Best Texas Restaurants on the Drive Between Austin and Houston | Eater Austin

"The kolaches at this La Grange bakery are made with lard, so obviously it’s worth the visit. There’s also pigs-in-a-blanket, cookies, fresh-baked bread, muffins, and more. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person;" - Nadia Chaudhury

The bakery is awesome. Always good food there. They have breakfast tacos available also. They make other things for lunch, have salads ready to go. Good assortment of convenience store snacks. Not as big assortment of drinks/beer, compared to other convenience stores in my opinion. But nice place, clean restrooms.

My wife ordered a baked potato online for her lunch break. She wanted to save time & order it online so all she had to do was pick up & pay then she could go about enjoying her food & break time like everyone else. She got there 20 minutes after placing the order. Plenty of time to prep a baked potato right? Well when she got in & got to the pick up line at the deli the employees had no clue about her order & didn’t know what she was talking about. They told her to wait while they tracked down her order…20 minutes later after waiting for an answer one of the deli workers finally told her “Oh we put it up at the front for you.” So they waisted 40 minutes of her lunch break over a baked potato. What a joke. We won’t be back, we’ll just go to Texas One Stop where it doesn’t take 40 minutes to get a baked potato that was ordered online ahead of time. Thanks Weikels. One less place in town for us to spend our money at.

Google
This has been a family travel stop for many years. The highway access requires your attention, but it is convenient. I usually have to allow time for the girls to go through the clothing shop. The bakery is very good, but don't ignore the sandwich counter. Our sandwiches have always been fresh ingredients on bakery bread. When you're driving for hours, the right sandwich is a wonderful thing.

Google
The bakery is inside a Shell Gas Station and store. The bakery was ok, but seemed a little doughy. The bigger Kolache was only filled on the ends that were visible and there was no filling in the middle at all.

Google
I asked how much Kolache packs of six were. The lady said they are 12.50 for a pack of 6. They advertise buy 5 get 6th free. When I checked out I noticed they charged me full price for 6 single packages without a discount for the 6th one. Went back to the counter and they explained that the discount is already included in the 12.50… the regular price they gave me when I asked about their price. She further explained that the discount was for the 6th kolache in the package. IMHO, this is deceptive and unethical. So watch and read carefully when going to this place. I’m not going back.

Google
Everything we looked at in the bakery area had NO pricing marked! Its a busy place and having to go inquire about the cost of items in the store is a hassel!! Part of our purchase included a couple items that were clearly labeled 25% off, however, we were charged full price. After the transaction, we brought it to their attention and it took over 10 minutes and 4 employees involved in getting the difference refunded. As well, these kids now-a-days cannot do simple math! 25% of $28+ tax is over $7.00. The young lady figured it at $5.16, which is what she calculated. She could have easily Googled 25% of $28, but that was obviously too difficult. 🤔🤷‍♂️

Google
This place kind of caught us off guard as we didn’t realize it was part of the gas station complex they own. But SO glad we tried it out. Had seen it recommended on Daytripper. We each ordered a Reuben sandwich. It came with chips. We also tried the potato and ham soup - best we’ve ever had!! They had the most delicious small crackers they served with it - ranch flavored but with a little kick from red pepper flakes. A Texas thing I guess & yummy. The sandwiches were delicious! Tender meat, great bread made there. To cap it off, we tried a piece of their pie. Chocolate cream with meringue. Yum!!! (Forgot to get a pic we ate it so quick lol). Don’t be afraid of the gas station vibe - it is well worth a stop! Plenty of goodies to take home too: breads, kolaches, noodles & more. Nice outdoor seating too.

Google
Clean updated restrooms, and plenty of choice for Weikels kolaches and koblibskies (meat filled). If you need a gift for someone a home, they have a darling boutique.

Yelp
The bread was heaven!!!! My favorite was the sausage, jalepeno, cheese My son had the cherry kolache which was eaten so quick, i didn't get a pic. He said it was tart and sweet, very delicious. The ham and cheese was amazing but 10/10 recommend the sausage jalepeno. So good!!!

Yelp
I drove out to meet friends in La Grange, expecting polite small-town hangs and maybe a sad cup of gas station coffee. What I did not expect was to stumble into a Czech bakery inside a gas station that absolutely wrecked my taste buds in the best way possible. First of all: pecan shortbread cookies. These weren't just cookies. These were buttery little discs of joy that crumbled like my willpower. Soft, nutty, and somehow both nostalgic and elite. I bought one. Then another. Then I blacked out and woke up with a bag. The pickles? Phenomenal. Crunchy, vinegary, and clearly made by someone who believes cucumbers should live their best, most flavorful life. Honestly, they slapped harder than they had any right to. Everything I tried? A total hit. No weak links. It was like the bakery gods descended into a gas station and said, "Let's confuse the hell out of travelers with excellence." Quintessentially Texas, too. Where else can you fill your tank, question your life choices, and then find nirvana in a kolache? 10/10. Would take a road trip detour for the cookies alone.

Yelp
I never drive to Houston without stopping by Weikel's bakery in La Grange, TX. it's a good place to use the restroom and get some of their homemade and small-town priced kolaches. These kolaches melt in your mouth. I got a half dozen kolaches...hope they make it make to Austin. I also got a pig n the blanket...sausage is so good paired with the roll. The ladies within the bakery remind me of a grandma... soft spoken, super helpful and always pack your items gently. Although a bakery, Weikell's sells snacks,, adult beverages and items you would see in a mini grocery store. I grabbed my items and got back on the road. The store's environment reminds me of a truck stop.

Yelp
Weikel's since 1929 and my favorite stop over between Austin & Houston (circa 2004) for bright & clean restrooms, local snacks, and MY FAVORITE cream cheese kolaches. It's in the bread. Spongy, not-too-sweet (but a Hawaiian-nod) and excellent alongside any of your favorite fillings although sausage/jalapeño/cheese and aforementioned cream cheese are bees knees. Go early before they sell out!

Yelp
Excellent service and exceptional welcoming experience. I had a soft and delicious plain cinnamon roll. Sorry, no photos, the cinnamon roll was so good I forgot to take a picture. We also but a whole coconut pie. If you are in the area you cannot leave La Grange without getting one or two of the many delicious pies they have. There is coffee, a good food menu, plenty of seating to enjoy the goodies and fresh bread. The ambience is great! Here is a photo of the coconut pie .

Yelp
We just love this place! It's SO much more than a gas station. We stop there often when we go through La Grange and usually get there special of the day. Today it was a Philly cheesesteak and it was excellent. They're special of the day sandwich or burger, chips and a drink is only $10. The Czech bakery is amazing. I haven't gotten anything there that wasn't absolutely delicious! They also sell a lot of home canned goods, homemade noodles, things like that. They have a nice clean bathroom and a little store off to the side with clothing and overpriced souvenirs. Both the deli and the bakery staff were very friendly today. The locals love this place and that's always an indicator how good it is! I'm sure we will be back.

Yelp
Was able to stop again, it has been along time. I got 6 kolaches and 3 poppy seeds pockets. I ate 2 kolaches right off, the rest for my parents. They were so good! Cherry cream cheese and lemon cream cheese. The best!

Yelp
Philly steak sandwiches were great; the menu offered variety we wish we'd been more hungry in the evening - Reuben looked good also. JOHN, the cook, was easy to chat with along with pleasant and you could tell actually cared about his cooking and service to the public (rare these days). We were looking for kolaches and stopped in - end of day so limited variety and we thought kind of pricey so did not purchase any. Quick - easy ordering; easy parking along with side store for snacks if wanted and gasoline fill up.
google avatar

Yelp
The most delicious kolaches, cookies, pies and beyond. I highly recommend the ham and cheese kolache. I am sad when they sell out but I u destined why.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way to Marble Falls. We ordered a pastrami & provolone on toasted white bread and a Ruben sandwich with SunChips & drink. The counter ladies were very nice. A small snafu with getting both sandwiches was quickly remedied. We ordered 2 fruit kolaches...Apple & pineapple. We got a cream cheese instead of pineapple. The pastry is super soft. We enjoyed both of them. We also got a honeybee---a cinnamon roll with pecans & honey instead of frosting. That is quite nice. Lots of honey chopped pecans and again super soft pastry dough. Lastly we got 2 regular cinnamon rolls one with raisins and two one no raisins. We will eat them for breakfast tomorrow. I'm sure they're going to need awesome. There is a cute shop there too. Items are fairly expensive but very cute. We will stop again on the way back.

Yelp
It was alright. Considered top shelf in the area. Sad it costs $11 for 3 small donuts and a Coke. I can say I tried it. They were fresh and soft. But small. Esp for the price point.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in for the bathrooms on a trip and decided to check out the bakery and store. The store was full of customers and it was hopping. The shelves were well stocked with pastries and all sorts of goodies that were freshly made. Unfortunately, if you're gluten-free you're out of luck. There wasn't anything fresh there you could have. Bummer. There also was a little store to the side but it was closed. Maybe it was too early? The bathrooms were clean and parking was easy.

Yelp
Cinnamon rolls are amazing! Worth the drive just for that . Was working in the area locally and saw the rolls on the display window, highly recommended.

Douglas M.

Yelp
I tried out Hruska's the prior afternoon, and Buc-Ees in Bastrop just prior to stopping at Wiekels. The kolaches at Weikels have more fruit to pastry ratio than the other two, and the dough is soft and chewy there. They have 15 or so flavors, while Buc-Ees had only three flavors of sweet kolaches, and their dough was dry and crumbly. I might try Hruska's on a morning just to make a fair comparison.

Yelp
Best best pecan square Friendly staff A must stop on our trip every time! We get Pecan bar, Lemon bar, and varieties of Kolache for families and friends

Yelp
Delicious kolaches !! The bread is just right on the fruit kolaches !! So fluffy and light. The plain sausage kola has just the right kick! Didn't get photos because we ate them too fast!! Service was excellent Bathrooms very clean! They also have them prepackaged to take home.

Yelp
This places is made out to be a little country bakery but its really just a gas stop. La Grange folks try to make it into a big deal, but they just dont know what a real bakery is like.
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
This bakery proved the benefit to advertising! I wasn't in the mood to stop anywhere on my trip to Austin from Houston. Then, I saw a billboard about the bakery and my curiosity was peaked. And, the rest is history! What a fabulous bakery. There is such a fantastic variety. I ate some kolaches and pigs in the blanket. They were all worth a second trip someday. There is also a good-sized grill in the rear of the store where they were making breakfast tacos.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
I don't like arguing with a cafe about the cost of my meal. There should be transparency. When the menu lists eggs and various forms of pork as meats, and the menu says pick two meats, then a double egg taco should be the standard price. Yet the good folks at Weikel's will argue till you are red in the face that an extra egg is an extra charge. I am across the street at McDonald's. Cheaper. Better. Always consistent.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Wow! Delicious! Fairly priced. Slowish service. Doesn't have a real gas station feel even though technically it is.
google avatar

Troy K.

Yelp
I rarely give this low amount of stars but this was just a disappointment. After driving for hours in the pouring rain this place looked like just what I needed. Kolaches were on my mind. They have a huge bakery and lots of variety. I got Jalapeno and cheese sausage, Cheese sausage, and Hatch cheese sausage kolaches. The dough was a bit dense and the sausages were just bad. Hard and not juicy and not very flavorful as well. I was sad as I could have waited and found a better kolache. The price was way too high. The staff was the best part by far
google avatar

Sean O.

Yelp
The koloches are really good and the cheery danish also . Good parking in back for a 30 min break.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
I love stopping here whenever we drive to Houston. They have really good baked goods, especially their kolaches. The kolaches come in a wide variety of flavors. There are other snacks too you can buy for the road. The restrooms are also very clean too. A perfect pit stop for your road-trip!
google avatar

Geanna C.

Yelp
Great homemade everything! The white toasted chicken salad sandwich was the BEST EVER!! (Fresh tomato & lettuce.) My husband said his hamburger was great, too! We bought food gifts for others, as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Weikel's Bakery is a excellent stop in La Grange TX I strongly recommend stopping on your to Austin TX or to Houston TX on hwy 71. So many things to choose from, my favorite is the blueberry kolaches. They're fresh and soft and melt in your mouth. They also have fresh Reuben sandwiches that's very flavorful and juicy. You will be happy you stopped , very friendly employees and very helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
I found this jewel on may way back from Austin. I brought a variety tray of goodies home to my family and everything I got was delicious!
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
Old fashioned, low prices, Flavorful food, I loved it! So many types of pigs in the blanket. Multiple types of meat pigs, even more types of fruit. The pastry was light and tasted like it just came out of the oven. I don't know why we stopped at a small town bakery, but I'm glad we did! The locals gather here for coffee and to talk, it's so cool, like stepping back in time.

Carol K.

Yelp
Best Kolaches in Fayette County. Try the cottage cheese instead of cream cheese. They're very tasty, with a more subtle flavor. They're the first to go, so arrive early.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Clean, welcoming, and SO many options. I ordered a turkey sandwich on a croissant and it came out fast & fresh. Also the bathroom was clean and had a lot of surfaces to set my belongings down & hang them up. Perfect as a mental break for a road trip stop.

Yelp
Kolaches are a touchy subject in Texas. And, yes I'm sticking to the generalization that is the word "Kolache". Only mentioning that die hard peeps will scream klobasnek; like Yelp has either word in their database. I'm seeing red lines like a run on sentence in Microsoft Word. There are some serious contenders along 71 from Austin to Houston. Let's start with the giant convenience store Buc-ee's in Bastrop. They actually do a nice job representing the craft. Fave being the boudin version and the Texas centric biscuit variation. Weikel's is a nice place; seemed clean and friendly staff. I picked out a cinnamon roll to take home; indulged in a ham and cheese with pepper jack on the outdoor patio. Nice meat/cheese combination. Sweet bread was tasty. I did notice there were many empty spaces in the display. Get back in your car if you're doing a kolache tour and head over to Ellinger, Texas. Hruska's cases seem to never run out. Been there many times and there's almost never an empty tray. Faves include...well, everything. Personal goto is the sausage wrapped in cabbage kolache. This store is above average when you think of your average 7-11, Circle K with a hot dog roller. Yet, when compared to stops along the kolache trail it's about average. Tasty, yet if you spend a few extra minutes in the car it gets way better. Still #1, in TX...Lone Star Kolache Ranchero
google avatar

Carol C.

Yelp
Awesome place, great food!! Service is great Love everything about this place Wish it was closer to me
google avatar

Echo L.

Yelp
Solid 5 stars! Probably the best fruit kolaches in Texas. Weikel's have 3 store locations, two along 290 and this one in La Grange. I've been to all of them and I think this one has the most variety type of bakery items. I ordered a peach cream kolache, one raspberry shortbread, one apple danish, and iced coffee. I just love their doughs for kolache -- super soft and really tasty. Shortbread is a must! It's flavorful but not overly sweet. The texture is great, and I would still eat it even there's no raspberry jams at all. The apple danish is huge, but a bit too sweet, not a fan. The iced coffee is pre-mixed with sugar/syrup and cream. I usually drink black coffee, so their iced coffee was a bit too much processed/flavored for me. Overall, I will, and you should, stop by this place and try some bakery items if you happen to be around this area.
google avatar

Shradha A.

Yelp
Now that I'm beginning to get indoctrinated into kolache culture of TX, I think I'm learning to tell a good one from an average one. Surprisingly, Bucee's is the frontrunner so far. Weikel's was definitely not as popular an option because our Kolaches were not super fresh. The fact that we had to warm it up on our own - maybe we messed up. The sweeter versions were certainly better than the meat-filled options because the meat-to-bread ratio was heavy on the latter.
google avatar

Julie Z.

Yelp
You can tell that this place, like others, are suffering from lack of workers. However, they're doing their best! The pastries are pretty good and the staff that does show up is very kind. I recommend getting cinnamon rolls...always!! They have a lot of other cutsie things that are central Texas favorites. So, if you'd like to bring someone a treat from here, that might be a good stop!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
A must stop on your way through La Grange. Locally made soup/dip mixes and pastas for sale. We always grab the Kluski egg noodles. Their bakery is famous for kolaches, bread, and honey bees (pecan cinnamon rolls). This stop we tried a sandwich from their deli. I got cold turkey on a Weikel bun and it was ok. My mom tried turkey on a croissant and had it toasted. Hers looked delicious! I'm trying that next time. You order your lunch at the deli counter and get a ticket. You can pay the ticket there or take it to the front with your groceries and pay there, then return your paid ticket to the pick up window to get your food. There's a little seating area inside and outside to enjoy your lunch or you can take it to go. This place is busy at lunch, but they keep up!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Love the thick sliced bread. Makes wonderful toast Also good cheese steaks off the grill.
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
There are a couple places you must stop by if you're driving from Houston to Austin and this is one of them! My boyfriend, friendm and I tried their blueberry with cream cheese and chocolate with cream cheese kolaches! Both are delicious though I preferred the blueberry one. I was actually looking forward to their savory ones so much more as I do like savory snacks, but they had completely sold out by the time I got there. This is definitely a no frills type of place, but you can also buy bread, beef jerky, and other goodies. Their pastries that are close to the "sell-by" date in packages are sold for cheaper, so definitely a worthwhile purchase if you're headed to meet up with people or about to go home and can freeze them!
google avatar

T. E.

Yelp
We always enjoy finding the types of kolaches we love but that are not always available elsewhere (e.g. cottage cheese). We also like that they have packaged items for easy to go purchases. My husband's family is Czech and makes kolaches, and these are some of his favorites when we are purchasing them.
google avatar

Steph C.

Yelp
I told someone in Austin I'd be driving to Houston, and she urged me to stop at Weikel's Bakery in La Grange on my way. This seemed like sound advice, and I was happy to see that the place was easy to find, pretty much right off the freeway. Weikel's is a no-frills spot--it looked like a straight-up gas station convenience store, with the coffee to match, according to my husband. The bakery portion was off to one side, and it was attended by one employee, who helped me with polite efficiency. I couldn't decide what to get, so I walked away with three pastries: a sausage, jalapeño, and cheddar pig-in-a-blanket and peach and cherry cream cheese kolaches. There was a microwave right by the bakery counter, and I used it to zap the pastries so they became soft and warm. They were delicious. I loved the savory pig-in-a-blanket, which was super flavorful with a nice bit of heat. The flaky kolaches were both excellent. The peach was like a lovely little hand pie, and the cherry cream cheese was satisfyingly frosted and sweet. I was on my own eating these treats, and I came close to finishing all of them in one sitting. If you're passing through La Grange, don't miss Weikel's Bakery. You might not get fine coffee and atmosphere, but the kolaches and pigs-in-blankets are absolutely superb.

Yelp
TLDR: Weikel's... Wei go anywhere else! Visit: Weekday (breakfast) Order: Poppyseed Kolache- 7.4/10 This is a raisin-y sweet kolache packed with an almost obscene amount of poppyseeds. It's not for everyone, but I find myself strangely drawn to it. Ham & Cheese Kolache- 7.3/10 Exactly what you expect. Jalapeño Sausage & Cheese Kolache- 7.9/10 Probably my fave because it's just so satisfying! A nice juicy jalapeño sausage stuffed with cheese, wrapped in a fluffy sweet bread pillow. Do it. Sausage & Cheese Kolache- 7.9/10 Everything nice without the spice. For more than a decade (at the old location and now that they've relocated to this new one), every time I'm heading to or from Austin, this has been a go to stop. IMHO I vote Weikels as THE OG #1 Kolache King. The difference? The bread! It's incredibly light and fluffy and has a slight sweetness that melds with both their savory and fruit based options. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars... during my last visit the employee behind the counter ripped my Kolache in half when packaging my order and I ended up with one that was effectively in two separate pieces with the meat falling out... I mean, come on. I know it tasted the same but the amount of effort/care she put into just tearing my Kolache up and throwing it into what felt like an animal feed bag was a bit disappointing. Oh well.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
This place made the list for a "Texas Kolache Trail" I found online, and for good reason! Those who are unfamiliar may be surprised to know that kolaches aren't always just bread + sausage; there are lots of fruit options! The bread here is so good - as the vessel of goodness, it has to be! It is hard to choose what to sample when you come here, so grab an assortment pack of the fruit type and then a couple meat varieties from the counter and you are set. A great discovery that I cannot wait to try again!

Felecia M.

Yelp
Best kolaches and pigs in a blanket. Lots of choices and can't pick a favorite. They're all great!! Lunch counter is great. Chicken salad is a real treat on tasted weikel bread. All sandwiches are made to order but there's also a small selection of grab n go. Don't forget the pies. I've ordered whole pies for holidays and hamburger buns for parties. Can't be beat!!
google avatar

Pam A.

Yelp
To be fair I've never come in the morning when things are fresh. This visit I got a bag of kolaches of various flavors packaged on the shelf. I hear they are fantastic fresh. The kolaches in the bag were a bit soggy. Can't beat those yummy flavors though.
google avatar

Joe W.

Yelp
The service is awesome kinda... they are super nice and attentive but attention to detail... not so much. I ordered a burger asked a double and raw onions instead of grilled... I got grilled onions and no extra patty... it's cool though it was slightly salty but way better than McDonald's across the street.
google avatar

Shawna D.

Yelp
We got there after lunch, so things might not have been as fresh but the only thing I loved was the lemon bar. The pecan roll wasn't tasty. The apricot strudel was okay. The strawberry kolache was 7/10. But the lemon bar was 9/10. Service was ok. The girl was not very social. But that's ok. Ambiance was cute.

Yelp
Short version: Super clean convenience store with a wide variety of bakery items. We stopped here late this afternoon on the way back to Austin after a brief road trip. While the kolache selection was limited, the apple and pineapple ones we brought home are sure to be a hit. I also appreciated the clean restrooms and the clean store overall. They have a great variety of fountain drinks and other convenience store items. And unlike some of the other big name stores, the prices are more than reasonable and fair. Definitely worth a stop, even though you have to get off of the freeway.

Wendell Ray G.

Yelp
I got the smallest sandwich for the price. it was about $9 and very small, about the size of a white castle burger. My advice is to avoid them. What you get is no where near worth the money.

Tom T.

Yelp
By far the best cream cheese kolache's I've ever tasted. I always make sure to stop here in my way to or from Austin.

Travis C.

Yelp
Everything we purchased was perfect and delicious! We had some advice from a local or at least a big fan of the place. We purchased a few danishes as we were on the road... they were absolutely delicious! I have marked this for our next trip to go OUT of our way and pick up some pies or baked goods on the way back home. YOU SHOULD GO HERE!
