Wellspent Market Is Moving Into a Historic Grocery Building on Southeast Division | Eater Portland

"Moving to Southeast Portland this June, the curated grocery founded by James Beard–nominated food writer Jim Dixon will take up residence in a century-old building at Southeast Division Street and Southeast 34th Avenue that originally opened as a general store called Jos. T Harris Grocery; renovations after longtime tenant Anders Printing Company vacated have revealed the building’s original fir floors and, as co-owner Noah Cable put it, they’re bringing the space back to its original glory. Born in 2019 out of Dixon’s Real Good Food import business—which he started 20 years earlier because a trip to Italy made him want an endless supply of good olive oil—Wellspent has become a destination for chefs and home cooks seeking specialty items, stocking local products like Scottie’s Pizza Parlor pizza dough and Ayers Creek Farm barley alongside French butter and tinned fish from Spain, and last summer it opened an outpost inside McMinnville’s Mac Market. The new location will include outdoor seating, a larger produce section, and space for an expanding deli program with house-made sandwiches such as a jambon beurre and a mortadella, burrata, and pistachio pesto on Ken’s Artisan Bread; customers will also find a curated section of Japanese snacks and sake by Fulamingo, kitchen- and barware featuring handmade pieces from the Davis Company and vintage wares sourced by Heyday, plus seeds, zines, and merch from the Culinary Breeding Network. In addition to supplying fresh and pantry goods, Wellspent hosts regular tastings, pop-ups, and larger events like Tomato Fest and How Have You Bean?, and the team plans to coordinate event setups with neighbors Lauretta Jean’s, Little Beast Brewing, and across-the-street Alpenrausch, which has a patio and parking lot." - Janey Wong

Review Update: Great responsiveness and quick fix. Try these guys out ✌️ I appreciate the REAL TALK and quick fix! Love a good pasta salad, just not at caviar prices haha. Glad it was just a label hiccup and I respect the store for jumping on it and re-pricing everything. I’ll definitely be back to grab a bite. Cheers! Original review: Cool spot with great European products. However, I was genuinely disappointed to see a very very small container of simple in house pasta salad priced at $17. That’s not just expensive it’s greedy and excessive! I hope they reconsider some of their bonkers pricing, as it detracts from an otherwise enjoyable shop.

The selection at this small grocer is absolutely awesome, ranging from fresh fruits, veggies and even good meats. They have some great olive oil and bread, premade foods, and even a variety of Japanese foods. There's also a nicely stocked selection of wines and alcoholic brews. I can't even come close to listing out all the food and drinks they stock here, it's a very diverse selection! They add a lot to the neighborhood and are definitely worth checking out!

Google
Carefully curated. There are limited choices for each item, but everything there is great. Excellent sandwiches also. If you cant find something great here - Im not sure what you want.

We were back in town visiting for a wedding and got to stay nearby. We went inside 1-2x a day the entire visit to buy sandwiches, chickpea salad + egg (shout out to store employee for the rec), brownies, fun na drinks, and bop around. Can't recommend them enough. Can't wait to be back

Google
Love this little grocery store! They've got tons of specialty drinks and food stuffs for a small compact market. I happened to stop by when they were doing a dinner pop up and feasted on salmon sashimi & a glass of white wine. What a treat! The staff is friendly and helpful, the store very inviting.

Google
I found this place looking for a store in which I could fine quality food and items that a professional chef would use. I was recommended to look at this place and I was not disappointed. At Real Good Food, you find quality speciality items that help you expand your recipes and tailor the flavors. The staff is very knowledgeable and are able to help you in anything related to cooking. The major items that they stock are: wine, vinegar, olive oil, grains, specific cheese, bread, etc. I am very excite to go to their workshops and classes to learn more about the art of cooking. This is truly a hidden gem within Portland.

Google
One of the best specialty grocery stores I’ve ever experienced. Truly feels like a neighborhood, family-run store. Everyone is friendly and the wine selection is well curated. They are very knowledgeable about olive oil and can help explain the differences in real terms. The Japanese selection is fantastic. Tons of “treats” to be discovered as well. I won’t spoil it. Just go! You can even shop their stuff online.

Google
This place will heal you. If they have the brownies by the register, get them. A group of 4 all concluded best brownie we've ever had and some ppl in the group were old so they've had a lot of brownies. Cute vibe. Nicely curated goods. Fab wine and cider. I wish I could live inside here like just put me on a shelf I'll hang out.

Yelp
Cute little specialty market with some staples but many imported interesting products. They carry some local products like Pinolo gelato, Ken's bakery bread, Loretta Jeans cookies and Olympia Provisions salami. Happened in on a Sunday afternoon and it turns out they have Sake tastings every Sunday between 2-4pm right now. Different ones each week they said. Very fun tasting and yes I ended up buying a bottle and looking forward to sharing with others. They have some kitchen ware in the back that is artistic and I'll guess local artists. Check it out and maybe buy something so we keep this little store in business.

Yelp
Wellspent Market has an incredible selection of curated goods, from olive oil to rice, pasta to condiments, wine to charcuterie, snacks to spices. Located on the corner of NE Couch and 10th, it's in a cool area of town and worth stopping in after coffee nearby or on your way to dinner. While I loved nearly everything I picked up in the store, nearly all of it was also above my price range. A $40 tote bag, $65 sweatshirt, $10 feta cheese, $12 honey, $20 jam, $30 olive oil... Shopping here regularly would be a dream but I'd either have to be really strategic or make a lot more money. It is a really pleasant experience, and I believe that the items they stock are high quality, it's just not in the budget. So my recommendation is to stop in to browse if you like the experience of shopping, or come here for specific specialty goods/gifts that you spotted on their website!

Yelp
I've long lurked on Wellspent Market's charming Instagram, drooling over goodies shared in stories, finding recipes to try, and putting together a list of all the things I need. Of course when I finally visited, WM exceeded my expectations. It is a charming little market with lots of pantry staples, plus fresh flowers, quite a few Asian treats and groceries, a good amount of wine, even ceramics and pottery. The focus is on local and artisan/specialty items, but they've got the basics too - I could not believe how much they fit inside! They offer a website where you can order nonperishables, but nothing beats a visit if you can make it (how else are you going to be like me and nab a pound of gorgeous, apricot orange locally foraged chanterelles?!). The employees were all crazy charming and super helpful. I felt like we were best friends. They also have a couple parking spots available behind the building, always a plus in Portland!

Yelp
My wife and I had just left brunch at a place on Hawthorne, where we'd just discovered a new hot sauce, manufactured and sold locally, and that we'd fallen in love with. I happened to look online on where to purchase it, and one of the two places mentioned was "Wellspent Market". Never heard of it. After leaving the restaurant, we got in the car and were headed across town, when we happened to drive right past Wellspent Market. "Hey, that's the place that has the hot sauce!" [braking noises] Well, I may have never heard of it before, but Wellspent Market is now firmly ingrained in my mind, seared into my gray matter with a burning brand as hot as the hot sauce that I purchased there (Chelo, if you're curious). My wife and I both marveled at the exotic array of foods and spices, sauces, oils, vinegars, pasta, dry goods, coffee, cheeses, candies, cooking tools, utensils, and beverages, all crammed into a Tardis-like, "it's bigger on the inside" mini market. How we haven't heard of this place before is a mystery to us both! Assuredly, I say unto thee, we shall return again! And even though, during this first visit, I may have only purchased the hot sauce, it was... [pun/Dad joke trigger warning] ...ahem... ...money Wellspent!

Yelp
I was looking for last minute yellow onions and bottled water, they had some. Just a block away from where I'm staying, my first time in the store, will be back. Very convenient location. The store was better than I expected. All kinds of varieties of goodies from produce, sauces, wine, t-shirts, etc. good service, employees were kind and helpful. The store itself is cute inside. Like a little mini grocery market.

Yelp
Wellspent Market is one of my favorite places in Portland and possibly this planet. If they are having an event, I'm there. If I'm nearby, I stop in. These guys know how to throw a party. Recently at their Olive Oil garage sale (wow, this is sooo Portland), I tasted a variety of styles and then purchased a vat of my favorite to take home at an incredibly affordable price. Other amazing events include a Vermouth and Tomato festival (two separate events). The market has many local vendors and the best of other worldly finds. My shopping bag usually includes a bottle of vermouth, a new to me sauce or spread, a cheese wedge, and digestifs. Gosh I love this place!

Yelp
This is a small market that has many unique items all in one spot. They also have some local items from businesses in the area. It's nice that you can come here to find the hard to find items in person.

Yelp
If your food and ingredients want to know where from, Wellspent is your home. They supply many local Colin the chicken restaurants. What that means is when you have a dinner party or pot luck, you are happy to talk about farmers and producers of the ingredients in your dish. Wellspent Market has unique ingredients you will not find elsewhere. They are a supplier of small scale imports from small makers and small local farmers. Their prices are not cheap. Their shop selection changes. Wellspent has a network of events to learn from their socials. I have met new foodmakers through Wellspent events. Foodies, put Wellspent in your rotation.

Yelp
Just went today for the first time and WOW! What an amazing store. Whoever curated the selection did such a good job. The place filled me with such joy. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Name update: Real Good Food has changed their name (in 2021, I believe), to Wellspent Market. I'm not sure if there is a way to add the new name to their Yelp entry, or at least to cross-reference the name change for people searching for either the old or new one. The market still has the same great variety, and, in fact, have just added a couple of wonderful new items. They now sell pizza dough and sauce from Scottie's Pizza Parlor on Division - they kicked off the partnership with a pizza party in the parking lot in October, 2021. These items, along with a number of things that would make excellent toppings from their regular inventory, should now make Wellspent a solid destination for the serious at-home pizza creator (which many people have become during the pandemic). This is in addition to all the other wonderful things that they sell (they've been our source for quality olive oil for many years.

Yelp
Serious food lovers and gastronomic geeks rejoice! Well Spent Market (formerly RGF) has so many specialty, boutique, small batch ingredients that are crafted and created with intention and love. The shelves are stocked with food stuffs from cuisines such as Spanish, Italian, Greek, Latinx, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and regional American (plus many more!). Need something difficult to find? It's probably here. Plus the staff are experts on the items in store. I highly recommend coming here for wine. The selection is very well curated and they really know each wine, how they were made, the producers, the flavor profiles, can suggest pairings, etc. Plus the prices are good and the wines even better! The small refrigerated sections cools specialty cheeses, meats, ciders, and beers - local and international. Now they even sell Ken's Artisan Bakery breads in store! My favorite in town and the only place on the east side carrying them. I'm here at least once a week since it's like a candy store for me.

Yelp
I wandered in here by chance when I was waiting for someone to get out of urgent care and wanted a snack. They have a great combo of quality olives, wine, and sake. Excited they're moving to division because it's closer to me.

Yelp
A great spot for thoughtfully curated and delicious foods and drinks. I went there for the first time yesterday and love this place. Friendly and helpful people, locally sourced spices, drink mixes, kitchen items - all fun to look at and buy.

Yelp
In addition to being my go to olive oil spot I like coming here when I want to make fancy pizzas for my friends and grabbing some Scottie's Pizza dough (might be the only place you can get it). They also have an excellent selection of spritzes, vermouth, and N/A items.

Yelp
Kind and knowledgeable staff! Great selection, pricey but curated. Great NA options, and esp loved their carbonated yerba mate can situation!
google avatar

Kelvin Y.

Yelp
Nice selection of highly curated gourmet ingredients. I scored a double brewed Soy Sauce and a Honey Vinegar. Items were well organized. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Great little place for a limited selection of bulk gourmet goods. Olive oil, vinegar, salted capers, hand-raked sea salt, spices, etc. Quality olives for $5 a tub. And, best of all, quality Spanish vermut on tap. No, you won't fill your grocery cart here. RGF is, however, a great place to get those items that you need to round out a gourmet mediterranean menu, at reasonable prices. They recently moved to a new address on Couch street, which is a much bigger and nicer store, and may lead to additional offerings from James. My photos come from there.

Yelp
One of my favorite markets for unique imports and local foods! Some of the best, unique wine selection - definitely try the Post Familiar

Binkie L.

Yelp
I like what they're doing, and I want to support them, but I have to say, I felt less than welcome when I went in last week. Did I smell bad? Was I not pretty or rich enough? My impression of the place from their IG account was that they're big on food and community, etc. Hey, ME TOO! But every question I asked was met with something that smacked of condescension-- me: I'm curious about this wine, but I maybe I just like the bottle (j/k, obviously). What do you think? beardy young fellow behind the counter: well, you can always stick a candle or flower in it when you're done. The entire transaction went on like that. No one was interested in engaging (There were probably more employees than customers in the shop when I was there, btw) or actually talking to me about the products, outside of what was already written on the label. It was just...weird.

Mia E.

Yelp
This is just the best store ever. They curate amazing ingredients and make them available at an incredibly fair price. The service with COVID curbside pickup has been flawless and they're just so nice every single time.
