Wellspent Market Is Moving Into a Historic Grocery Building on Southeast Division | Eater Portland

"Moving to Southeast Portland this June, the curated grocery founded by James Beard–nominated food writer Jim Dixon will take up residence in a century-old building at Southeast Division Street and Southeast 34th Avenue that originally opened as a general store called Jos. T Harris Grocery; renovations after longtime tenant Anders Printing Company vacated have revealed the building’s original fir floors and, as co-owner Noah Cable put it, they’re bringing the space back to its original glory. Born in 2019 out of Dixon’s Real Good Food import business—which he started 20 years earlier because a trip to Italy made him want an endless supply of good olive oil—Wellspent has become a destination for chefs and home cooks seeking specialty items, stocking local products like Scottie’s Pizza Parlor pizza dough and Ayers Creek Farm barley alongside French butter and tinned fish from Spain, and last summer it opened an outpost inside McMinnville’s Mac Market. The new location will include outdoor seating, a larger produce section, and space for an expanding deli program with house-made sandwiches such as a jambon beurre and a mortadella, burrata, and pistachio pesto on Ken’s Artisan Bread; customers will also find a curated section of Japanese snacks and sake by Fulamingo, kitchen- and barware featuring handmade pieces from the Davis Company and vintage wares sourced by Heyday, plus seeds, zines, and merch from the Culinary Breeding Network. In addition to supplying fresh and pantry goods, Wellspent hosts regular tastings, pop-ups, and larger events like Tomato Fest and How Have You Bean?, and the team plans to coordinate event setups with neighbors Lauretta Jean’s, Little Beast Brewing, and across-the-street Alpenrausch, which has a patio and parking lot." - Janey Wong
